BPSC TRE in-hand salary calculator (Bihar HRA, not central)
Patna is a Y-category city at 20% HRA, not X at 30%. Three of the biggest salary pages get this wrong and overstate your pay by around Rs 3,000 a month.

Where other pages get this wrong
Patna is a Y-category city at 20% HRA. Bihar does not use the central 30/20/10 ladder at all.
Commonly published instead: IN-Hand CTC states "X Category (Patna): 30%" outright; Adda247 and Testbook apply 30% without comment.
The Bihar cabinet fixed the state’s own slabs on 15 June 2024, effective 1 January 2024: Y-city (Patna) 20%, Z-city 10%, unclassified and sub-divisional headquarters 7.5%, rural 5%. The central 30% rate applies only to postings in cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Using 30% inflates in-hand pay by roughly Rs 2,500-3,200 a month.
Most BPSC TRE salary pages are static articles that print one number and move on. The number is usually wrong, for two reasons: they use the central HRA ladder instead of Bihar’s, and they assume a Patna posting when most TRE posts are rural. This page gives you a calculator that uses the right slabs, and shows its working so you can check it.
Why we are confident about the formula
This is not reverse-engineered from coaching sites. The 2023 cabinet note that fixed teacher pay was reported with its own totals, and those totals reconcile to the rupee — which pins down the formula exactly.
The reconciliation
- The cabinet’s reported figures were Rs 37,500 / 41,880 / 46,260 / 47,720, described as basic + 42% DA + 4% HRA + medical allowance.
- Check the first: 25,000 + 10,500 (42%) + 1,000 (4%) + 1,000 = 37,500. Exact.
- All four close exactly. That tells us four things at once.
- The formula is Basic + (DA% × Basic) + (HRA% × Basic) + a flat Rs 1,000 — with DA and HRA both calculated on basic alone.
- Medical allowance is exactly Rs 1,000, not a variable.
- Teachers sit on Bihar’s low HRA scheme — the 4% used there was the then-current rural rate, which is now 5%.
- The Rs 2,130 "CTA" that several sites add is not part of it, because the totals close without it.
Worked examples — Patna posting
At DA 60%, HRA 20% (Patna), medical Rs 1,000, before income tax. These are the same numbers the calculator produces; they are here so the page still works without JavaScript, and so you can check the arithmetic by hand.

For a rural posting, which is the more likely case, replace HRA at 20% with 5%: that is Rs 1,250 instead of Rs 5,000 at primary level, and Rs 1,600 instead of Rs 6,400 at senior secondary.

Two things about HRA that change the answer
- HRA follows the school’s location, not where you live. A teacher living in Patna and posted to a rural school draws 5%, not 20%. This is why the calculator defaults to rural — defaulting to Patna flatters the result by thousands.
- HRA is not automatic. Since August 2026, teachers reportedly must file an affidavit before an Executive Magistrate plus a self-declaration through the Block Education Officer. It is not paid at all in government accommodation. The calculator has an option for drawing no HRA.
- A Nalanda implementation letter of August 2026 sets the boundaries more finely: 10% within 8 km of the municipal corporation, 7.5% inside Municipal Council or Nagar Panchayat limits, 5% rural.
Deductions
What comes off, and what does not
- NPS at 10% of pay. The old pension scheme and GPF do not apply to these posts.
- Professional tax is Rs 2,000 a year, not Rs 2,500. All four levels’ annual gross falls in the Rs 5-10 lakh band of the Bihar Act of 2011. That is about Rs 167 a month, although Bihar actually deducts it in a single month — September.
- Income tax is not modelled here. It depends on your regime choice and declarations. Every figure on this page is before income tax.
One honest caveat: the base on which NPS is calculated is disputed. We compute it on basic plus DA. If it is actually basic alone, the primary-level deduction would be Rs 2,500 rather than Rs 4,000 — a swing of Rs 1,500 a month. The calculator has a toggle so you can see both.
Numbers we are not publishing
Several things you will find on other salary pages are absent here on purpose.
And why
- No pay matrix level. The 2023 rules fix a flat starting pay. "Level-11" and the various grade-pay figures you will see are retrofits with no order cited behind them.
- No Rs 2,130 CTA. The cabinet’s own totals close without it.
- No confident Vishisht Shikshak (specified teacher) figures. The only source we found is internally inconsistent — it gives Rs 25,000 as the primary basic while also quoting a Rs 29,000-32,000 range.
- The annual increment and promotion ladder are aggregator-sourced only. A 3% increment is a 7th Pay Commission convention, and it is not obvious it applies to a flat pay fixed outside a matrix.
For context on what is out there: one site publishes a senior-secondary gross of Rs 1,04,864 and in-hand of Rs 86,000-92,000. That is arithmetically impossible from a Rs 32,000 basic at any plausible DA rate, and roughly double the real figure.
What is the in-hand salary of a BPSC TRE teacher?
At DA 60% with a rural posting (5% HRA), roughly Rs 38,000 a month at Classes 1-5 and about Rs 49,000 at Classes 11-12, before income tax. With a Patna posting at 20% HRA it is about Rs 41,800 and Rs 53,300. Use the calculator on this page to set your own level, posting and DA rate.
What is the basic pay for BPSC teachers?
Rs 25,000 for Classes 1-5, Rs 28,000 for Classes 6-8, Rs 31,000 for Classes 9-10 and Rs 32,000 for Classes 11-12. Seven independent sources agree on these figures.
Is HRA 30% for Patna in BPSC TRE?

How much professional tax is deducted in Bihar?
Rs 2,000 a year for this income band under the Bihar Act of 2011 — about Rs 167 a month, though it is deducted in a single month, September. It is not Rs 2,500, which is the figure several sites use.
Do BPSC teachers get the old pension scheme?
No. These posts are under the National Pension System, with a 10% employee contribution. GPF and the old pension scheme do not apply.
Is the salary different during probation?
Reported as two years of probation on full pay, but this comes from aggregator sources rather than the rules document itself, so treat it as unconfirmed.
