Where other pages get this wrong
A B.Ed holder cannot apply for Classes 1-5. Not with a bridge course, not with anything.
Commonly published instead: Several pages still list B.Ed among the qualifications for primary teaching, and many more imply the six-month bridge course restores eligibility.
In Devesh Sharma v. Union of India (11 August 2023) the Supreme Court struck down the NCTE notification of 28 June 2018 that had permitted it, calling it "arbitrary, unreasonable and has no nexus" with the Right to Education Act. The bridge course protects people already appointed before that judgment. NCTE states in terms that it is "for teachers to protect their existing employment only and it will not be valid for those teachers seeking subsequent employment as primary teachers." A B.Ed holder’s lowest entry point in TRE 4.0 is Classes 6-8.
Eligibility is where most BPSC TRE applications go wrong, and it goes wrong in a predictable way: candidates assume the qualifying test they hold covers the level they want. It usually does not. This page sets out which test counts where, which degrees are accepted at each level, and the two rules that are genuinely disputed — so you know where to be careful rather than being told a confident answer that might be wrong.
Which test counts for which level
If you read nothing else here, read this table. CTET and BTET stop dead at Class 8. STET begins at Class 9. They do not overlap.

The mistakes we found on live pages
- One major site assigns STET Paper II to Classes 9-10 and 11-12 jointly. It does not — Paper I is for Classes 9-10, Paper II for Classes 11-12.
- Another writes "CTET Paper 1 or STET Paper 1" for primary. STET does not qualify anyone for primary teaching at any level.
- The practical consequence: a candidate with STET Paper I who applies for Classes 1-5, or one with CTET Paper II who applies for Classes 9-10, is rejected at verification having paid the fee and prepared for months.

Classes 1-5 (primary) — 3,847 posts
Any one of these routes
- 10+2 with at least 50% plus a 2-year D.El.Ed
- 10+2 with at least 45% plus a 2-year D.El.Ed taken under the NCTE (Recognition Norms and Procedure) Regulations, 2002
- 10+2 with at least 50% plus a 4-year B.El.Ed
- Graduation in any stream plus a 2-year D.El.Ed
- Not accepted: B.Ed, and B.Ed with the six-month bridge course
Note carefully: the 45% figure is NOT a caste-category relaxation. It attaches to the NCTE regulation vintage under which the D.El.Ed was taken. Every competitor page we checked prints "45%" bare, which invites candidates to assume it is a category concession available to them.
Classes 6-8 (middle) — 8,563 posts
Graduation plus a teaching qualification — B.Ed or D.El.Ed — with CTET or BTET Paper II. This is the lowest level a B.Ed holder can enter.
Classes 9-10 (secondary) — 3,877 posts
Graduation in the relevant subject plus B.Ed, with Bihar STET Paper I.
Classes 11-12 (senior secondary) — 16,101 posts
A post-graduate degree in the subject applied for, plus B.Ed, with Bihar STET Paper II. This is where half of all TRE 4.0 posts are, and the subject-to-degree mapping matters: your post-graduate subject must match the post.

Unresolved: What is the age cut-off date?
- 1 August 2026 — the majority position across sources.
- 1 August 2024 — Prepp.
- 1 August 2023 — PrepELearn.
- Prepp contradicts itself on a single page, computing the minimum age as of 2026 and the maximum as of 2024.
Our position: If you are within about two years of a limit, this is worth checking against the advertisement before you rely on it — a two-year difference in the reference date decides eligibility outright for a meaningful number of candidates.
Two further age figures are single-source and should be treated cautiously: a maximum of 47 for persons with disability, reported by one publisher; and a ceiling of 60 for serving contractual and niyojit teachers, reported by one publisher, which would be an unusually large concession and comes with no definition of who counts as contractual.
The STET 2026 self-declaration route
Candidates who sat STET 2026 but do not yet have a result are reportedly permitted to apply for Classes 9-10 and 11-12 through a prescribed self-declaration, producing their admit card, result and original documents at verification. Failing to qualify means no admit card for TRE 4.0.
Unresolved: By when must a self-declaring candidate actually qualify?
- One source says "before the Prelims" — but the 27 August announcement scrapped the preliminary stage, and BPSC has issued no corrigendum, so that deadline may no longer refer to anything.
- There is a further collision: the general rule is that all certificates must be held by the last date of application, and that an extension of the deadline does not extend it. The self-declaration must be a carve-out from that rule, but its scope is stated nowhere.
Our position: This is genuinely unresolved and consequential. If you are relying on the self-declaration route, watch the notices page rather than any coaching site — and be aware that the deadline may be defined by reference to a stage that no longer exists.
The number of attempts
Unresolved: How many times can you sit BPSC TRE?
- Five — Prepp, citing the Bihar State Vidyalaya Adhyapak Rules 2024.
- Three — Testbook.
- Three, at primary level only — PrepELearn.
- No limit at all — Physics Wallah.
Our position: Four publishers, three incompatible answers, so we give no number anywhere on this page. This is the single highest-value thing to check in the advertisement itself.
Serving niyojit and specified teachers
No source we reviewed reports any academic or qualifying-test relaxation for serving niyojit or Vishisht Shikshak candidates. We state that as an absence of evidence rather than as a rule — it is not the same as having found a document confirming there is none.
Can a B.Ed holder apply for BPSC TRE Class 1-5?
No. The Supreme Court struck down the NCTE notification permitting B.Ed holders to teach at primary level in Devesh Sharma v. Union of India on 11 August 2023. The six-month bridge course protects teachers already appointed before that date; NCTE states it does not create eligibility for fresh applications. A B.Ed holder’s lowest entry point in TRE 4.0 is Classes 6-8.
Does the six-month bridge course make me eligible for primary teaching?
No. NCTE is explicit that the course is "for teachers to protect their existing employment only and it will not be valid for those teachers seeking subsequent employment as primary teachers." It protects an existing job; it does not qualify you for a new one.
Is CTET valid for BPSC TRE Class 9-10?
No. CTET and BTET cover Classes 1-8 only. Classes 9-10 requires Bihar STET Paper I and Classes 11-12 requires STET Paper II. This is the most common eligibility error we saw, and some widely-read pages state it incorrectly.
What is the difference between STET Paper 1 and Paper 2?
STET Paper I qualifies you for Classes 9-10; STET Paper II qualifies you for Classes 11-12. They are not interchangeable, and a page telling you Paper II covers both levels is wrong.
What is the age limit for BPSC TRE 4.0?
The maximum is 37 for unreserved men, 40 for unreserved women and for BC and EBC candidates, and 42 for SC, ST and transgender candidates. The minimum is 18 for Classes 1-8 and 21 for Classes 9-12. The reference date is disputed — most sources say 1 August 2026, but two give earlier dates.
Can I apply for TRE 4.0 if my STET 2026 result has not come?
Reportedly yes, for Classes 9-10 and 11-12, through a prescribed self-declaration, with your admit card, result and originals produced at verification. The deadline by which you must actually qualify is undefined at present, because the stage it was tied to may no longer exist.
How many attempts are allowed in BPSC TRE?
Sources disagree — five, three, three at primary only, or no limit. We will not pick one. Check the advertisement, because this is the sort of rule that decides eligibility outright.
What qualification do I need for Classes 11-12?
A post-graduate degree in the subject you are applying for, plus B.Ed, plus Bihar STET Paper II. Your post-graduate subject must match the post — this level holds 16,101 of the 32,388 posts, so the subject mapping is worth getting right.
