The story in short

Unit 3 of Poorvi is built around the joy of mystery, logic and imagination. Its main reading is the detective story “The Case of the Fifth Word”, adapted from Donald J. Sobol’s Encyclopedia Brown series. A young boy detective, called Encyclopedia (Leroy Brown), helps his father, the Chief of Police, crack a puzzle left behind by a criminal named Nolan. Nolan had hidden stolen jewellery and left a coded clue for his accomplice Davenport: four odd-looking words written on a sheet from a desk calendar. Encyclopedia notices the words stand for days of the week with the letters d-a-y dropped—Nom for Monday, Utes for Tuesday, Sweden for Wednesday and Hurts for Thursday. The missing, unwritten fifth word must therefore be “Fir”, standing for Friday. The jewellery, he reasons, is buried under a young fir tree in Nolan’s nursery—exactly where the police find it. The story shows how careful observation and logical reasoning can solve a mystery that looks impossible at first. The unit also includes imaginative pieces such as “The Magic Brush of Dreams” and “Spectacular Wonders”, extending the theme of wonder, creativity and curiosity. Through codes, clues and magical ideas, the unit trains students to read closely, reason step by step and enjoy puzzles.

The story in 6 beats

  1. 1Chief Brown brings home a mystery, and Encyclopedia quietly listens at dinner.
  2. 2The family discusses Tim Nolan, the old jewellery robbery, and Davenport’s link with him.
  3. 3Chief Brown says Nolan dies after a stroke and leaves his nursery to Davenport.
  4. 4A strange four-word note clipped to the will troubles Chief Brown and Mrs. Brown.
  5. 5Encyclopedia sees that the words hide the names of weekdays from a calendar.
  6. 6He finds the missing fifth word, Friday or fir, and the jewellery is found under the fir tree.
