Summary
This concluding chapter studies the philosophy of the Constitution — the moral vision underlying its provisions. It argues for a political philosophy approach: understanding the conceptual structure and key concepts (rights, citizenship, minority, democracy), working out the coherent vision embedded in the Constitution, and reading it alongside the Constituent Assembly Debates to justify its values. Constitutions exist not only to limit power but to empower those traditionally deprived of it, and to provide peaceful, democratic means of social transformation. The Constitution's philosophy is liberal, democratic, egalitarian, secular and federal, sensitive to minority and disadvantaged groups and committed to a common national identity, with democracy as the "umpire". The chapter sets out core features and achievements: individual freedom (rooted in over a century of struggle from Rammohan Roy), social justice (linking liberalism with reservations for SCs and STs), respect for diversity and minority rights, a distinctive secularism of "principled distance", universal franchise, asymmetric federalism, and a common national identity. It notes procedural achievements — faith in political deliberation and a spirit of compromise and accommodation — and answers criticisms that the Constitution is unwieldy, unrepresentative or alien, before acknowledging limitations such as a centralised idea of unity, inadequate attention to gender justice, and relegating socio-economic rights to the Directive Principles. The best summary of its vision, it concludes, is the Preamble — "We, the people of India".
