The story in short
दो वर्णों के परस्पर मेल से होने वाले विकार को सन्धि कहते हैं। संस्कृत में सन्धि के तीन मुख्य भेद हैं — स्वर सन्धि, व्यंजन सन्धि और विसर्ग सन्धि। स्वर सन्धि तब होती है जब दो स्वर मिलते हैं; इसके प्रमुख भेद हैं — दीर्घ सन्धि (विद्या + आलयः = विद्यालयः), गुण सन्धि (सुर + इन्द्रः = सुरेन्द्रः), वृद्धि सन्धि (एक + एकम् = एकैकम्), यण् सन्धि (इति + अपि = इत्यपि) तथा अयादि सन्धि (ने + अनम् = नयनम्)। व्यंजन सन्धि में व्यंजन और स्वर या व्यंजन के मेल पर परिवर्तन होता है (जैसे सत् + जनः = सज्जनः)। विसर्ग सन्धि में विसर्ग (ः) के स्थान पर परिवर्तन होता है (जैसे निः + आहारः = निराहारः)। सन्धि के नियम परीक्षा में महत्त्वपूर्ण हैं और शुद्ध संस्कृत-लेखन के लिए आवश्यक हैं।
