Checked 13 October 2026. From UHR’s pages on medborgarskapsprovet (last updated 12 and 17 August 2026; read again on 13 October 2026 and unchanged), förordning (2026:451), lag (2001:82) and Migrationsverket’s citizenship pages. UHR says the next test date comes “during the autumn” and the August results at the end of October, so the rows marked not announced can change at any time.
The Swedish citizenship test in English: the short version
Sweden’s new citizenship rules apply from 6 June 2026. Applicants aged 16 to 66 must now show knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society. For the second of those there is a test, medborgarskapsprovet, run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR). It is being introduced in stages: the first sitting, in civics (samhällskunskap) only, was in August 2026, and a test in Swedish is to follow at a later date [official: UHR, Frågor och svar; Migrationsverket].
This page explains the test in English from start to finish. One thing has to be said first, because it is what most English-language searches are really asking: the test itself cannot be taken in English. Everything below is written with that in mind.
Official: UHR’s pages, read 13 October 2026. The chapter and page figures are from the guide’s table of contents.
Can you take the Swedish citizenship test in English?
No. UHR’s own answer to the question “Kan jag göra provet på mitt modersmål?” (can I take the test in my mother tongue?) is: “Nej, medborgarskapsprovet kan bara göras på svenska” — no, the citizenship test can only be taken in Swedish [official: UHR, Frågor och svar]. The Act says the same thing in legal language: the civics test “ska utformas på svenska på funktionell nivå”, it is to be drawn up in Swedish at a functional level (13 §) [official].
Where other pages get this wrong
There is no English version of the test, and UHR has not published a question count, a test time or a pass mark.
Commonly published instead: that the test can be taken in English or with a translator, and a fixed pattern such as “60 questions in 90 minutes” with a pass percentage.
UHR’s page states “Provet är på svenska, skrivs på papper och består av flervalsfrågor där ett svar är rätt. Information om provtid och antal frågor för nästa provtillfälle kommer”: in Swedish, on paper, multiple choice with one correct answer, and information on time and number of questions is still to come [official: UHR, read 13 October 2026].
What you can do in English is prepare. Migrationsverket publishes its citizenship pages in English. The study guide and UHR’s pages about the test, as we read them, are in Swedish. The practical consequence for an English speaker: learn the facts in whatever language is fastest for you, then learn to recognise them in Swedish, because that is how they will be asked.
What is known today, and what is not
The full table of what is decided is in the format guide linked below. This is the short list an English-speaking applicant needs before planning anything.
| Question | Answer on 13 October 2026 | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Who runs the test? | UHR. Migrationsverket handles the citizenship application and decides who is referred to the test. | Official |
| What kind of test is it? | Written on paper, multiple choice, four options, one correct. No minus points for a wrong answer. | Official |
| How many questions, how long? | Not announced for the next sitting. | Not announced |
| What is the pass mark? | Not published. August 2026 was a trial test whose pass limit is set afterwards. | Not announced |
| When is the next test? | To be announced on uhr.se during the autumn. A new registration will be needed. | Not announced |
| What does it cost? | 2,000 kronor to UHR in the ordinance (6 §), first for tests held in 2027. UHR’s own page still says fee information will come. | Official, two texts |
| What is it based on? | The study guide Sverige i fokus: “Provet kommer att baseras på det här materialet.” | Official |
The reasoning behind each row, and why the August sitting says little about the next one, is in the format guide.
Do you need the test at all?
Many expats do not. The knowledge requirement applies from 16 and stops when you turn 67 (Migrationsverket states it as ages 16 to 66). Inside that range, a pass grade in samhällskunskap from Swedish school or municipal adult education (Komvux) shows the knowledge without any test (13 c §) [official]. Migrationsverket’s Swedish page also says that Nordic citizens who have made a notification (anmälan), and stateless persons born in Sweden who are under 21, are exempt; the English version of the page says Nordic citizens who “have applied”.
If you moved to Sweden as an adult for work and have never taken a graded Swedish school course in civics, expect the test to apply. The guide on who must take the test goes through every group, with a checker. The residence period, the permit condition, the income rule and the SEK 2,900 application fee are separate requirements, set out in the requirements guide.
From application to result: the steps, in order
You cannot book this test the way you book a language exam. The order is fixed by the ordinance and by UHR’s registration rules.
| Step | What happens | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | You apply for citizenship to Migrationsverket. | Migrationsverket |
| 2 | Migrationsverket refers applicants to UHR for the test. Only a referred person may take part. | Förordning (2026:451) 4–5 §§ |
| 3 | You receive a referral letter (anvisningsbrev). Without it you cannot create a registration account. | UHR, Frågor och svar |
| 4 | You create an account with BankID or Freja eID, or with your personal number and the personal code in the letter. | UHR, Anmälan |
| 5 | You register when registration opens. It is closed today, and registering after it closes is not possible. | UHR, Frågor och svar |
| 6 | A week or so before the test, a call-up (kallelse) arrives in your account. Read it carefully. | UHR, Frågor och svar |
| 7 | You sit the test. At the test you prove your identity and declare on your honour that you will not use unauthorised aids. | Förordning (2026:451) 8 § |
| 8 | The result appears in your account and is reported automatically to Migrationsverket. | UHR, Frågor och svar |
One point catches people who have lived in Sweden on a foreign passport for years: on the day UHR asks for a valid Swedish identity document showing your personal number, and its test-day page says a foreign passport is not accepted. The ID rules and the list of what you may bring are in the format guide; if you have no Swedish ID card, order one well before a date is announced.
The Swedish you need to read the paper
The Act describes the level of the paper as “funktionell nivå”. For the separate language requirement Migrationsverket names CEFR level B1 for reading and listening and A2 for speaking and writing; what those levels mean, and how to show them, is in the språkkrav guide. For the civics test you only read and tick, so reading is the skill to build.
Almost every multiple-choice question starts with a question word or phrase; one of UHR’s five example questions instead opens with a short situation and puts the question after it. The table lists the question words we use in our own practice questions on this site, with our translations. Learn them first: if you misread the question word, knowing the fact does not help.
| Swedish | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Vad …? | What …? | Vad får de som har rätt att rösta hemskickat före valet? |
| Vilken / vilket / vilka …? | Which …? | Vilken myndighet gör pass och nationella id-kort? |

Mini test: 10 questions in Swedish with English translation
Ten new questions, each from a different chapter of the study guide, in the real format: four options, one correct. The Swedish line is the question; the English under it is a translation to check yourself with. None of these repeats the questions in the first mini test, the 30 practice questions, our quiz library, the revision kit or UHR’s own five examples.

How to read your score
There is no official pass mark to compare with, so the number matters less than how you reached it. Ask two things. First, how many did you get right from the Swedish alone? That is the score that counts, because the real paper has no translation. Second, for each one you missed: did you not know the fact, or did you not understand the question? The cure is different. A missing fact means reading the chapter; a misread question means word work.
Practise it, don't just read it
After a mini test, try a full set on one chapter, in Swedish, with the reason for each answer.
One Swedish practice quiz is live on the exam page today: 12 questions on democracy and how Sweden is governed, four options each, with the reason for every answer. None of its questions is repeated on this page.
A study route for English speakers
Four steps, in this order
- Understand first, in English if that is faster. The content is thirteen short chapters on geography, democracy, law, media, rights, work, welfare, history, the world, religion and traditions. The topic map lists them all.
- Then read the Swedish original. UHR’s guide is 48 pages and comes as a PDF and as audio, one file per chapter. Reading while listening is the cheapest way to learn how the key terms look and sound.
- Put it on a calendar. The two-week plan splits the guide into 14 days with a page count for each.
- Practise in the real format. Four options, in Swedish, and answer every question: UHR’s own tip is “Våga gissa! Det finns inga minuspoäng”, dare to guess, there are no minus points. When the easy ones are safe, move to the 15 worked hard questions.
UHR says it does not stand behind practice tests made by other people or companies. That includes ours, which is why every answer on this page cites its page in the official guide.
Preview the medborgarskapsprovet revision kit
If you would rather learn the content in English before meeting it in Swedish, the kit is built for exactly that order. The kit puts the whole official guide, Sverige i fokus, on seven pages in English, with the Swedish word you will meet on the paper beside each fact and the guide’s page number after it. Page 1 is free to read in full on the kit page, where you can also see the contents of the other six pages before deciding.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Swedish citizenship test available in English?
No. UHR states that the citizenship test can only be taken in Swedish, and the Citizenship Act says the civics test is to be drawn up in Swedish at a functional level.
Can I bring a dictionary or use a translator?
UHR’s test-day page lists what may be on your desk: a pencil, an eraser and simple earplugs. Electronics and anything that can store or send information are not allowed. A dictionary is not on the list of permitted items.
How many questions are in the Swedish citizenship test?
UHR has not announced it. On 13 October 2026 its pages said that information about the test time and the number of questions for the next sitting will come.
What is the pass mark?
Not published. The August 2026 sitting was a trial test and its pass limit is set after the test.
When is the next Swedish citizenship test?
Not announced. UHR says the date will be published on uhr.se during the autumn of 2026 and that a new registration will be needed.
Can I sign up for the test myself?
Only if Migrationsverket has referred you and sent a referral letter. Without the letter you cannot create a registration account.
Is the study guide available in English?
UHR publishes Sverige i fokus in Swedish, as a PDF and as audio files. The test is based on that material.
Do EU citizens have to take the test?
The knowledge requirement in the Act does not depend on which country you come from. Migrationsverket names two exempt groups: Nordic citizens who have made a notification (the Swedish page’s wording; the English page says “applied”) and stateless persons born in Sweden who are under 21. Everyone else aged 16 to 66 needs a listed school grade or the test, unless an exemption applies.
How much does the test cost?
The ordinance sets 2,000 kronor, payable to UHR, first for tests held in 2027. UHR’s own pages still say fee information will come. The citizenship application has its own fee of SEK 2,900.
Is there negative marking?
No. UHR’s tips say to dare to guess because there are no minus points.
