Studieprøven as a Self-Studier: Fee, Deadline, Test Centres, Pass Rate

Checked 29 September 2026. Fee from SIRI’s dates page (2026 level) and BEK nr 1687 af 16/12/2025 §12 (1,888 kr at 2025 level, indexed each 1 January). Deadlines from §11 and SIRI. Providers from SIRI’s sprogcentre page and practical guide. Pass rates from UIM activity reports 2023–2025, tables 16 and 17. The 2027 dates were not published on 29 September 2026. Deadline counts and shares are our arithmetic.

Who counts as a self-studier

Studieprøven closes Danish Education 3, module 6, and for students on that module the test is free — the language school registers them [official: SIRI]. Anyone else who registers directly is a selvstuderende, a self-studier, and pays a fee (§12). That includes people who studied on their own or abroad, and people who finished module 6 some time ago. The regulation lets your home municipality either decide that you pay the fee yourself or pay it for you (§12 stk.4), so ask the municipality before you pay. One group registers as self-studiers but does not pay: students on Danish education at a school that is not designated to hold the test. They register at a centre that holds it, and the school where they were enrolled pays the fee (§2 stk.1 nr.3; §12 stk.6) [official].

The fee: two official numbers

SIRI’s dates page is the price list: “Gebyret for den skriftlige del af prøven er 987 kr. (2026), og gebyret for den mundtlige del af prøven er ligeledes 987 kr. (2026)” — 987 kr for the written part and 987 kr for the oral part, 1,974 kr in total [official]. The regulation that sets the fee says something else: “Ved tilmelding til Studieprøven opkræves et gebyr på 1.888 kr.” (§12 stk.3) [official].

Both are right. §12 stk.7 says the amounts are at 2025 level and are indexed once a year on 1 January from 2026, and SIRI’s news of 15 October 2025 says the fee “reguleres” (is adjusted) every year. So 1,888 kr is the legal base and 1,974 kr is the 2026 price. Our arithmetic: 1,974 ÷ 1,888 is an increase of about 4.6%, close to the 4.5% step for PD1–PD3 (1,575 kr in the regulation, 1,646 kr in 2026). A flat 4.5% on 1,888 kr would give about 1,973 kr, not 1,974; SIRI does not show its rounding, so the 987 + 987 kr it publishes is the figure to pay. Pay what SIRI’s page says for the year you register; expect a new figure for 2027.

Where other pages get this wrong

The Studieprøven fee is national — 1,974 kr in 2026 — not set by each provider.

Commonly published instead: Our own notice board for this exam says fees are set by each provider and quotes one Copenhagen school’s 987 / 1,974 kr as “an indication rather than a national price list”.

The fee is fixed in BEK 1687/2025 §12 and published by SIRI for the whole country. The school’s figures matched because they are the national figures. What does differ by provider is refund terms, which the regulation does not set.

What will Studieprøven cost you in 2026?

2026 figures from SIRI’s dates page (987 kr per part). The legal base is BEK 1687/2025 §12: 1,888 kr at 2025 level, indexed every 1 January, with half the fee allowed for a part taken in a later term (stk.5). The municipality decides whether a self-studier pays or it pays (stk.4); for a student of a school that does not hold the test, that school pays (stk.6). Refund rules are not in the regulation.

Deadlines, counted back from the written day

You register with a provider “senest ti uger før prøveterminens begyndelse” — at the latest ten weeks before the term begins (§11 stk.1) — and one registration covers both the written and the oral part [official: §10; SIRI]. The regulation counts from the start of the term, not from any written day. The published 2026 deadlines fit a term that begins on the Studieprøven written day, the first written day of the term, so the calculator below counts from it as a cross-check; SIRI’s published deadline is the one that counts. Our arithmetic: 18 May 2026 minus 70 days is 9 March 2026, and 9 November 2026 minus 70 days is 31 August 2026 — exactly SIRI’s two deadlines.

SIRI’s dates page says the 2027 dates will be published “senest 1. oktober 2026” — by 1 October 2026 — and on 29 September 2026 they were not up [official]. Two other clocks run from the term: special conditions (extra time, IT aids, a helper) must be applied for at least 8 weeks before the term, and if you have none of the listed ID documents, SIRI must approve an alternative at least 4 weeks before the written term (§11; SIRI). Two terms run each year, May–June and November–December (§14).

Deadline calculator from the written day

Enter the Studieprøven written day of the term you want. The calculator counts back to the three deadlines that run from the start of the term. It is set to 9 November 2026; change it when the summer 2027 dates are published.

Rules: registration 10 weeks before the term begins (§11), special conditions at least 8 weeks before the term (SIRI), alternative ID approved by SIRI 4 weeks before the written term (§11). The regulation counts from the start of the term, not from the written day; counting from the written day is our arithmetic, and in 2026 it reproduces both published deadlines (18 May → 9 March, 9 November → 31 August). Treat it as a cross-check: the deadline SIRI publishes for the term is the one that counts.

Missed the deadline?

Late registration is possible, but it is an exception. §11 stk.2 says the provider “kan undtagelsesvis tillade tilmelding efter tilmeldingsfristen” — may exceptionally allow registration after the deadline. SIRI’s dates page puts it plainly: a language centre can in special cases let you take the test anyway; you must contact a centre yourself, and it can say no, for example if there is no seat [official].

Where other pages get this wrong

A missed Studieprøven deadline can exceptionally be waived by a provider.

Commonly published instead: Our own notice board for this exam says registration for the winter 2026 term closed on 31 August 2026 “and cannot be reopened”.

BEK 1687/2025 §11 stk.2 and SIRI’s dates page both allow late registration in special cases, at the provider’s discretion. It is not a right and the answer may be no, but “cannot be reopened” is wrong.

Where you can take it: about ten centres

SIRI’s March 2026 notice says candidates register at one of 48 language schools designated to hold tests [official]. That number covers all the Danish tests. Studieprøven is held at far fewer: SIRI’s practical guide says “ca. 10 studieprøveafholdere” (about 10 Studieprøven providers, figure for summer 2026), and its sprogcentre page, as read on 29 September 2026, marks 11 centres as holding Studieprøven [official]. We print both numbers; the page is the list to use.

Region grouping is ours; the list is SIRI’s. Registration goes directly to the centre; there is no national portal. The fee is the same everywhere, but refund terms, how you pay and whether you can write on a computer are the centre’s own rules (bilag 3 lets a provider offer computers but does not require it).

SIRI’s warning is short: check your ID in good time, because without correct ID you cannot take the test. Bring the permission letter as well as the ID if SIRI approved an alternative.

Pass rates: self-studiers pass far less often

UIM’s annual activity reports give Studieprøven results separately for students on the course (table 16) and for self-studiers (table 17). The pass rate is among those who completed all parts, not everyone who registered [official].

Official: UIM activity reports 2023, 2024 and 2025, tables 16 and 17 (calendar years). Pass rate among those who completed all parts.

How to read it. First, the 2023 course-student row shows more completions (340) than registrations (335). That is not an error to smooth over: the reports explain that the written and oral parts may fall in different terms or years, and since 2018 a retaken part counts as a new completion, so the columns are not a clean funnel [official: UIM]. Second, self-studiers pass less often but, once they pass, do so with grades as high as course students (7.5 against 7.7 in 2025). Third, even for course students, Studieprøven has the lowest pass rate of the four tests; for comparison, PD3 course students passed at 91.8% and PD3 self-studiers at 64.3% in 2025 [official: UIM 2025].

Our arithmetic: across 2023–2025, 516 of 972 self-studiers who completed passed — 53%. The self-studier pass rate rose 6.6 points from 2023 to 2025. The reports do not give pass rates by part, so they cannot tell you whether reading, writing or the oral is the usual stumbling block; that breakdown is not published.

What the numbers suggest for planning is modest: about half of the self-studier completions UIM recorded were passes — a count of completions, not the chance that one person passes a fresh attempt — and a failed written or oral part can be retaken alone at half the fee; the written part is reading and writing together, so neither can be retaken on its own (the pass rule guide). The free official samples are the closest thing to a mock; see the written exam guide and the oral guide. For the same numbers on PD3, see the PD3 self-study guide.

Special conditions and complaints

Special conditions are applied for with the provider at least 8 weeks before the term. For an impairment that is not obvious, an expert statement is required and may be at most 2 years old, except for permanent conditions such as dyslexia, and SIRI can exempt a candidate with a significant permanent impairment from a part — its example is a deaf candidate exempted from the oral [official: SIRI special-conditions page]. A complaint about the test goes in writing to the provider within 4 weeks of the result; a re-mark or re-test can give a lower grade [official: SIRI complaints guide]. For dates as they are published, including the 2027 term, follow the Studieprøven notice board.

How much does Studieprøven cost in 2026?

1,974 kr for a self-studier: 987 kr for the written part and 987 kr for the oral part.

Why does the regulation say 1,888 kr?

That is the 2025-level base in BEK 1687/2025 §12. It is indexed every 1 January, and SIRI publishes the 2026 fee as 987 kr per part, 1,974 kr in total.

Is Studieprøven free?

Yes for students on Danish Education 3, module 6. Self-studiers pay, unless their municipality decides to pay. A student of a school that does not hold the test registers elsewhere, and that school pays the fee.

Does each language school set its own fee?

No. The fee is national. Refund terms are the provider’s own.

When is the registration deadline for summer 2027?

Not published yet. SIRI says the 2027 dates will be out by 1 October 2026. The rule is ten weeks before the term begins.

Can I register after the deadline?

Only exceptionally, if a provider agrees. It can refuse, for example when there is no seat.

Where can I take Studieprøven?

At about ten centres. SIRI’s sprogcentre page marked 11 on 29 September 2026, in Copenhagen, Roskilde, Aarhus, Herning, Viborg, Aalborg, Esbjerg, Odense and Kolding.

Can I use my driving licence as ID?

No. A driving licence is never accepted, and SIRI cannot grant a dispensation for one. If you have none of the listed IDs, SIRI can in some cases approve another photo ID when you apply at least 4 weeks before the written term. Photocopies are not accepted.

What is the Studieprøven pass rate?

In 2025, 84.5% for course students and 56.6% for self-studiers, among those who completed all parts.

Is there a limit on attempts?

We found none. Each new attempt is a new registration; a self-studier pays the fee again, while a candidate on module 6 takes the test free.
