Studieprøven Written Exam: Reading in 90 Minutes, a 400-Word Essay

Checked 29 September 2026. From BEK nr 1687 af 16/12/2025 bilag 1 pt 4, bilag 2 and bilag 3, SIRI’s Studieprøven page, SIRI’s official sample tasks and SIRI’s practical guide for providers (edition of 11 May 2026). The written day moves each term; the format has been stable. The clock times, page totals and point totals are our arithmetic.

One morning, two components, four and a half hours

The written part of Studieprøven is taken on a single day and gives you two grades: reading comprehension and written production. SIRI fixes one written day per test per term, and Studieprøven has the first of the four: in winter 2026 it is Monday 9 November 2026, followed by PD3 on 10 November, PD2 on 11 November and PD1 on 12 November [official: SIRI dates page]. The written tests start at 09:00 (SIRI practical guide).

SIRI’s practical guide for providers sets out the Studieprøven day in order: reading 1, collected after 25 minutes; a break of about 10 minutes; reading 2, collected after 65 minutes; a break of about 15 minutes; written production, collected after 3 hours. It gives the total as “4 ½ time (ekskl. pause)” — four and a half hours excluding breaks [official].

The clock column is our arithmetic from a 09:00 start and SIRI’s approximate breaks; your provider’s timetable decides the real times. If breaks run to the stated lengths, the day ends at about 13:55, so plan for a long morning and bring something to eat for the breaks if your provider allows it.

Where other pages get this wrong

The Studieprøven written day is 4½ hours of test time, not about 3½.

Commonly published instead: Our own notice board for this exam says the written day lasts about 3.5 hours.

Reading is 25 + 65 = 90 minutes and writing is 3 hours: 270 minutes, which is SIRI’s own “4 ½ time (ekskl. pause)”. With the two breaks the day runs to about five hours.

Reading comprehension: four tasks, one grade

Reading has three delprøver, and delprøve 2 has two tasks, A and B (bilag 1 pt 4.8–4.16). No aids are allowed in reading, and no dictionaries [official: SIRI]. The regulation says the texts for all three delprøver total 30–35 standard pages (pt 4.17). SIRI’s candidate page describes each task:

TaskTextWhat you doSkillTime
Delprøve 1A collection of texts of about 25 standard pages, with a table of contents15 questions on specific facts; find them fast and write a short answerSearch reading (søgelæsning)25 minutes
Delprøve 2AOne text of about 2.5 pages on a complex topicPut 5 removed paragraphs back; 2 extra paragraphs do not fitCareful global readingShared 65 minutes
Delprøve 2BOne text of about 2.5 pages5 questions, each with 3 optionsCareful global readingShared 65 minutes
Delprøve 3One text of about 2 pages10 words removed; choose each from 4 optionsCareful local readingShared 65 minutes

Our arithmetic: 25 + 2.5 + 2.5 + 2 = 32 standard pages, inside the regulation’s 30–35. Delprøve 1 is the odd one out: it is the only task with written answers, and the only one where reading everything is a mistake. SIRI’s advice is explicit — find the places where the requested information stands; you should not read the whole collection, and you should not add information the question did not ask for [official].

The official samples show how the tasks are scored. They are one sitting’s papers, not a rule for every sitting, and the score needed for each grade changes after every sitting.

Official sampleQuestionsPoints per correct answerPoints in the task (our arithmetic)
Delprøve 1 — “Grønland”15115
Delprøve 2B — “Dunning-Kruger-effekten”5210
Delprøve 3 — “Amning og det gode moderskab”10220
Delprøve 2A — “Louis Pasteur og den spontane genese”5 paragraphs to place2 (2 or 0 per answer)10

SIRI turns total points into a grade with a table it adjusts after each sitting and does not publish [official: SIRI complaints guide], so the points above cannot tell you what a 02 needs. Our arithmetic: across the four samples that is 15 + 10 + 10 + 20 = 55 points, but a sample’s scoring is not a promise about every sitting. What they do show is where the weight sits in the sample: a delprøve 3 gap is worth twice a delprøve 1 answer. Timing matters more than any single item. Delprøve 1 is collected after 25 minutes whatever you have done, and the remaining three tasks share 65 minutes, so decide in advance how you split them.

Written production: one task from three

You get a booklet with three tasks and answer one (bilag 1 pt 4.21). Each task starts from factual information in a chart or table plus a very short text introducing the topic. The topics are always society-related; SIRI’s examples from earlier papers are social inequality, corruption in different countries and climate change [official: SIRI]. They can be answered from general knowledge of society — SIRI says the censors do not grade how much you know about the topic.

Focus pointWhat SIRI asks forExample from the official sample
1. DescribeBriefly describe the facts in the chart or table so a reader who cannot see it understands the most important pointsThe growth in private consumption and how it changed
2. ExplainGive possible causes of what the figures showRising income and rising house prices
3. Put in perspectiveConsequences of the development, or what could be done; give reasons for your assessmentGlobal effects: prosperity, but also over-consumption, inequality, climate
4. Take a positionAgree, disagree or both with a statement, and argue it at length and coherentlyAgrees that people in rich countries have become too rich

The regulation’s minimum is 400 words (pt 4.22). SIRI’s sample task “Opgave 3 Forbrug” — private consumption 1966–2015, with a comparison of 1955 and 2015 — adds one more line under the last point: “Besvarelsen af dette punkt skal udgøre mindst 25 % af den samlede besvarelse” (this point must make up at least 25% of the whole answer) [official: sample]. That rule is printed in the sample, not in the regulation. Our arithmetic: 25% of 400 words is 100 words, so a 400-word answer that follows the sample gives at least 100 words to the position you take.

SIRI is blunt about staying on topic: an answer must address all four points, and text about something the task did not ask for “tæller ikke med” — does not count — so the censors can find that the task, or part of it, was not answered [official]. They grade how precisely and with how much nuance you answer the four points, how easy the text is to read, and whether errors get in the way of meaning. The regulation’s version (pt 4.23) adds analysing and conveying factual information briefly, reasoning, putting in perspective, assessing, giving examples and arguing for a stated view.

400-word planner for the four focus points

Write or paste a practice answer point by point. The counter checks the 400-word minimum in the regulation and the 25% share for the last point that SIRI’s official sample task asks for.

The 400-word minimum is official (bilag 1 pt 4.22). The 25% rule for point 4 is printed in SIRI’s sample task “Opgave 3 Forbrug”, not in the regulation, so treat it as the pattern of the sample. The count splits on spaces, which is our method; SIRI does not publish how words are counted. Nothing you type leaves this page or is stored.

Aids, paper and computer

ComponentAllowedSource
Reading (all four tasks)Nothing: no aids and no dictionariesSIRI Studieprøven page
Writing: dictionariesAll dictionaries, including electronic ones that are not internet-basedBilag 2 pt 1
Writing: other aidsA list of irregular verbs; self-made dictionaries only where no authorised dictionary exists for your mother tongue, approved in advanceBilag 2 pt 2
Writing: not allowedA phrasebook or similar with ready-made sentences to insertSIRI Studieprøven page
Writing: on paperThe default: you write by handSIRI Studieprøven page
Writing: on a computerIf your provider offers it. Word processing with spell check and a thesaurus; no grammar check; no internet (ordinary rule: the provider can allow restricted internet access only when an approved special-conditions aid needs it)Bilag 3 pt 1, 2.1 and 3.4

The provider must have Danish-Danish dictionaries and Danish spelling dictionaries in the room (bilag 2 pt 3.2), but you are responsible for bringing your own aids and pens. If you are unsure whether your dictionary is allowed, SIRI asks you to check with the provider well before the day. On a computer you save your own work as you go (bilag 3 pt 4.3).

Rules in the room

RuleDetailSource
Arriving late to a written testThe provider’s head may let you in during the first quarter of an hour if the delay is reasonably explained; you do not get extra time§19 stk.2
Leaving earlyNot in the first 15 minutes, and not in the last 15 minutes, even if you have handed in§24 stk.2
Handing inA supervisor attests your answer before you leave your seat; after that you cannot change it§24
Leaving your seatOnly in the shared break, when you finish, or with a supervisor for something urgent§22
IDValid photo ID from the list; no photocopies. Without a listed ID, SIRI can in some cases approve another one if you apply at least 4 weeks before the written term begins; a driving licence can never be approved§11; SIRI registration page

Special conditions — extra time, IT aids for dyslexia and others — are applied for with the provider at least 8 weeks before the term. For an impairment that is not obvious you need documentation from a doctor, psychologist, vision consultant or other expert, normally no more than 2 years old; for a permanent one, such as dyslexia, it does not expire [official: SIRI special-conditions page]. Registration and fees are in the self-study and registration guide.

What the written part decides

Both written grades must be 02 or above in the same term (§48 stk.3). If one of them misses, you sit the written part again — reading and writing — even if the other grade was good; the reasoning is in the pass rule guide. That makes the written day the part to plan most carefully. The oral comes three to five weeks later; see the oral exam guide. If you are deciding between this test and PD3, whose written day is half an hour shorter and asks for 200 words in its second task, see the PD3 written exam guide.
