Checked 29 September 2026. From SIRI’s dates page (2026 fee and dates), BEK nr 1687 af 16/12/2025, UIM activity reports 2023–2025 and STPS. The 2027 dates are due by 1 October 2026 and the fee is indexed every 1 January, so both change. Refund terms are a provider’s own (reported).
Who counts as a self-studier
A self-studier (selvstuderende) is either someone who registers for a test without having been enrolled on the module that leads to it, or a student taught by a provider that is not designated to hold that test, who then registers as a self-studier at one that is (BEK 1687/2025 §2 stk.1 nr.2–3) [official]. For PD3 that module is Danish Education 3, module 5. Enrolled students on that module take PD3 as part of the course and do not pay the fee [official: SIRI PD3 page]; everyone else registers as a self-studier and a fee is charged — paid by you, by your municipality if it so decides, or, in the non-designated-provider case, by that provider (§12 stk.4 and stk.6) [official].

How to register
Registration, step by step
- Pick a provider. Only designated language schools hold the tests — SIRI refers to “en af de 48 sprogskoler” that are designated to hold them. Register directly with the one where you want to sit.
- Register for the whole test. The written and the oral part are registered together, for the same term (§12 stk.1; §10).
- Meet the deadline. The rule is at least ten weeks before the term begins (§11 stk.1). For winter 2026 that was 31 August 2026; it has passed.
- Pay the fee to the provider when you register (§12).
- Apply for special conditions early if you need them: at least 8 weeks before the term (§27).
Official: SIRI news of 25.02.2026, SIRI dates page, BEK 1687/2025.
| Term | Registration deadline | PD3 written | PD3 orals | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer 2026 | 9 March 2026 | 19 May 2026 | 10–23 June 2026 | Held |
| Winter 2026 | 31 August 2026 | 10 November 2026 | 2–15 December 2026 | Deadline passed |
| Summer 2027 | Not published | Not published | Not published | SIRI: published by 1 October 2026 |
The summer 2027 row is empty on purpose. SIRI’s page says the 2027 dates will be published “senest 1. oktober 2026” — no later than 1 October 2026 [official], and BEK 1687 §7 requires it each year. Terms always fall in May–June and November–December (§14). Summer 2026 gives the pattern — a deadline in early March, the written day in May, the orals in June — but that is orientation, not a forecast.
Missed the deadline? The rule changed on 1 January 2026
Conflict: who can allow a late registration?
- Until 31 December 2025: SIRI could grant dispensation from the deadline, on an application form (BEK 1627/2024 §11; SIRI dates page as archived in November 2025).
- From 1 January 2026: the provider may exceptionally allow registration after the deadline (BEK 1687/2025 §11 stk.2). SIRI’s current page adds that the centre can refuse, for example when there is no seat.
Pages written before 2026 still describe the SIRI form. Today you ask the provider, and there is no right to be accepted.
ID
| Document | Accepted | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Passport, residence card, alien’s passport or convention passport issued in Denmark | Yes | Original only |
| Passport or national ID card from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland | Yes | The ID card must be approved for entry into Denmark |
| Passport or other valid photo travel document from any other country | Yes | Must be approved for entry into Denmark |
| Photocopy or phone photo of any of these | No | SIRI registration page |
| Driving licence | No | Not accepted, even by dispensation (SIRI) |
| Other photo ID | Only with approval | Apply to SIRI 4 weeks before the written term (§11 stk.8) |
The fee: national, set by regulation, indexed
The self-studier fee is not set by each provider. SIRI publishes one figure: “som selvstuderende er gebyret 1.646 kr. (2026)” for PD1, PD2 or PD3 [official: SIRI dates page]. The regulation fixes the amount at 1,575 kr at 2025 level and indexes it every 1 January from 2026 by the rate adjustment percentage (BEK 1687 §12 stk.2 and stk.7) [official].
Two official fee figures — and why both are right
- BEK 1687/2025 §12 stk.2: 1,575 kr.
- SIRI dates page: 1,646 kr (2026).
- Our arithmetic: 1,646 ÷ 1,575 = 1.045, a step of about 4.5%, which is what the 2026 indexation added to the 2025-level figure.
The 2027 fee is not published. It will be indexed again on 1 January 2027; we do not guess the new figure.
| Item | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| PD3 as a self-studier, 2026 | 1,646 kr | SIRI dates page (official) |
| Enrolled on Danish Education 3, module 5 | No fee | SIRI PD3 page (official) |
| Municipality pays or requires you to pay | The municipality may decide either | BEK 1687 §12 stk.4 (official) |
| Part moved to a later term because of documented illness | Half fee | BEK 1687 §12 stk.5 (official) |
| Retake after a fail | A new full fee | SIRI registration page (official) |
| Studieprøven, for comparison | 987 kr written + 987 kr oral | SIRI dates page (official) |
| Withdrawal and refunds | Set by each provider | Studieskolen: full refund minus 100 kr before the deadline, 50% until 2 weeks before the written day, nothing after (reported) |
We found no refund rule in the regulation, so refunds are the provider’s own terms. Studieskolen’s are listed above as an example [reported]. Studieskolen also notes that passing the test ends your right to free Danish education on that course [reported] — worth knowing if you are still enrolled somewhere and sitting PD3 privately.
Pass rates: enrolled students against self-studiers
| Year | Group | Registered | Completed | Passed | Pass rate | Average grade (all) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Enrolled students | 3,142 | 3,065 | 2,849 | 93.0% | 6.6 |
| 2023 | Self-studiers | 2,149 | 1,894 | 1,180 | 62.3% | 3.8 |
| 2024 | Enrolled students | 4,201 | 4,117 | 3,767 | 91.5% | 6.2 |
| 2024 | Self-studiers | 2,356 | 2,078 | 1,312 | 63.1% | 3.9 |
| 2025 | Enrolled students | 4,377 | 4,183 | 3,840 | 91.8% | 6.0 |
| 2025 | Self-studiers | 3,064 | 2,615 | 1,682 | 64.3% | 3.8 |
Official: UIM activity reports 2023, 2024 and 2025, tables 16 and 17 (whole calendar year). The pass rate is among those who completed all parts.
Four things to read carefully in those numbers. First, the pass rate is among those who completed the test, not everyone who registered. Our arithmetic for 2025 self-studiers: 2,615 of 3,064 registered completed (85%), and 1,682 passed — 55% of those who registered. Second, the gap is large and steady: 30.7 points in 2023, 28.4 in 2024 and 27.5 in 2025 (our arithmetic). Third, the 2025 report says Campus Bornholm’s test data for 2025 were reported with errors that could not be corrected in time, so the 2025 national figures carry that flaw [official: UIM 2025]. Fourth, the average grade of all self-studiers is 3.8 against 6.0 for enrolled students, while self-studiers who passed averaged 5.9 [official: UIM 2025].
The reports also note that the written and oral parts are not necessarily taken in the same term, which fits the illness exception in the regulation. Self-studier registrations grew from 2,149 in 2023 to 3,064 in 2025 — up 43% (our arithmetic). For comparison, in 2025 self-studiers passed PD2 at 61.6% and Studieprøven at 56.6% [official: UIM 2025]. No breakdown by nationality or by term was published.
The reports do not explain the gap, and the self-studier group includes people taught at non-designated providers, so we cannot say what causes it. Possible factors, which the data do not test, are less teaching on the oral topic, less feedback on writing and less practice with the format. The free official samples help with the last — see the written exam guide and the oral exam guide.
Doctors, nurses and dentists: 10, 7 and 7
For authorisation in Denmark, the Danish Patient Safety Authority (Styrelsen for Patientsikkerhed, STPS) asks doctors, nurses and dentists who are nationals of, or trained in, countries outside the EU/EEA, as a rule, to pass PD3 with oral communication 10, reading comprehension 7 and written production 7 [official: STPS]. That is far above the 2.0 average — oral 10 is the second-highest grade.
Check first whether STPS is taking applications at all. On 29 September 2026 STPS’s pages for doctors and for nurses from outside the EU/EEA said “Vi modtager i øjeblikket ikke ansøgninger om autorisation” — it is currently not receiving applications — because a quota for applications has been introduced, with its own FAQ on the quota [official: STPS]. The dentists’ page carried no such notice. The grades below still matter once applications are accepted.
STPS is generous on attempts: “Du har flere forsøg” — you have several attempts — and the three grades do not all have to come from the same sitting [official: STPS]. That is STPS’s own rule for authorisation; it does not change how SIRI grades or passes the test, where every sitting is graded on all three parts. The tracker below combines your best grades across sittings.
Healthcare authorisation: your best PD3 grades so far
STPS lets the three required grades come from different sittings. Enter the best grade you have in each part across all your PD3 attempts to see what is still missing.
Requirement from STPS, as a rule, for doctors, nurses and dentists who are nationals of, or trained in, countries outside the EU/EEA: oral 10, reading 7, writing 7. STPS exemptions and its current application quota for doctors and nurses still apply. Your choices are not stored.
| Situation | STPS says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| You passed PD3 with 10/7/7, not more than 12 months before STPS registers your application | You do not need to take it again | STPS |
| You have lived in Denmark since passing PD3 with those grades | You do not need to take it again | STPS |
| Danish upper-secondary education | Exempt | STPS |
| A single subject at A level in written and oral Danish or Danish as a second language (STX, HF, HHX, EUX), or A level in written and oral Danish on GIF or IB | Exempt | STPS |
| A Danish higher education not taught in a foreign language | Exempt | STPS |
| Passed Studieprøven | Exempt | STPS |
Nurses had a break: from 1 July 2023 nurses from third countries were exempt, but the requirement returned from 1 July 2025. It does not apply to nurses who had already started, or been offered, a specific evaluation post by 1 July 2025, or whose three-year deadline for the authorisation process expires before 1 July 2026; if that deadline is extended to 1 July 2026 or later, the requirement applies [official: STPS]. STPS expects to process the language documentation in 14 working days once the conditions are met [official: STPS]. We did not check the rules for other health professions.
Special conditions, complaints and the certificate
| Topic | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Special conditions | Apply to the provider at least 8 weeks before the term; matters that could affect the test level go to SIRI 7 weeks before. Options include IT aids for dyslexia, extra time, a helper, testing at home. An expert statement may be at most 2 years old, except for permanent conditions such as dyslexia | BEK 1687 §27–§28; SIRI special-conditions page |
| Exemption from a part | SIRI can exempt a candidate with a significant permanent impairment from parts of the test, for example a deaf candidate from the oral | §30; SIRI |
| Complaint | In writing, with reasons, to the provider within 4 weeks of the result. Re-marking (written) or re-test (oral) can give a lower grade | §57–§61; SIRI complaints guide |
| Certificate | Issued once both parts are taken, even if you failed. One original; a lost certificate is replaced free. Collect it with photo ID | §51–§53; SIRI registration page |
| Retakes | Register for the next term and pay a new fee. We found no limit on the number of attempts | SIRI registration page |
Studieskolen gives 14 September as its special-conditions deadline for the winter 2026 term [reported], which is the regulation’s 8 weeks before the term; check your own provider’s published date. Which route actually needs PD3 is in PD2 or PD3 for permanent residence and citizenship, and how the three grades combine in the pass rule and calculator. If you are also booking the civic test, its own fee and deadline are in the Indfødsretsprøven registration guide and the Medborgerskabsprøven registration guide.
How much does PD3 cost in 2026?
1,646 kr for a self-studier. The fee is national, set by regulation at 1,575 kr at 2025 level and indexed every 1 January.
Is the PD3 fee different at each language school?
No. SIRI publishes one national fee for PD1, PD2 and PD3 self-studiers. Refund terms, however, are each provider’s own.
Is PD3 free for course students?
Yes, for students enrolled on Danish Education 3, module 5. The municipality may also pay for a self-studier, or decide that you pay.
When is the PD3 registration deadline for summer 2027?
Not published yet. SIRI says the 2027 dates will be published by 1 October 2026. The rule is ten weeks before the term begins.
Can I register for PD3 after the deadline?
Since 1 January 2026 the provider may exceptionally allow it, and can refuse, for example when there is no seat. Before 2026 this was a SIRI dispensation.
What is the PD3 pass rate?
In 2025, 91.8% for enrolled students and 64.3% for self-studiers, among those who completed all parts.
Can I use a driving licence as ID at PD3?
No. A driving licence is not accepted, even by dispensation.
What PD3 grades do doctors need in Denmark?
Oral 10, reading 7 and writing 7, according to STPS. The same applies to dentists, and to nurses again from 1 July 2025.
Do the STPS grades have to come from one sitting?
No. STPS says you have several attempts and the grades need not all come from the same test.
How many times can I take PD3?
We found no limit. Each retake is a new registration with a new fee.
Do I get my money back if I withdraw?
The regulation sets no refund rule. Studieskolen, for example, refunds in full minus 100 kr before the deadline and 50% until two weeks before the written day.
Do I get a certificate if I fail?
Yes. A certificate is issued once both parts are taken, whether you passed or not.
