Checked 29 September 2026. From BEK nr 1687 af 16/12/2025 §10, §12, §48, §52 and §54, BEK nr 1759 af 30/12/2024 (the grading scale) and SIRI’s Studieprøven, registration and complaints pages. The 2026 fee changes every 1 January. Worked examples and the checker’s advice on what to re-register for are our reading of the rule.
The rule, as the regulation writes it
Studieprøven gives you three grades: reading comprehension (læseforståelse), written production (skriftlig fremstilling) and oral communication (mundtlig kommunikation), which includes listening. The regulation that decides the result is BEK nr 1687/2025 §48 stk.3 [official]. It says the test is passed if reading, writing and oral each pass with at least 02, “og læseforståelse og skriftlig fremstilling er bestået i samme prøvetermin” — and reading and writing are passed in the same term.
That is two conditions, not one. There is no average to lean on: a 12 in the oral cannot carry a 00 in reading, which is the opposite of how Prøve i Dansk 3 works. PD3 is passed on a weighted average of 2.0 with the oral counted twice (§48 stk.2); Studieprøven asks for a pass in every part. If you are weighing the two tests, the comparison is in Studieprøven or PD3: which to take.
Official: BEK 1687/2025 §48 stk.3 and bilag 1 pt 4.6; BEK 1759/2024 §12 (02 is the pass grade).
Where other pages get this wrong
Studieprøven needs 02 in every part AND reading and writing passed in the same term.
Commonly published instead: SIRI’s own candidate page says only “Prøven er bestået, hvis du består hver af de 3 delprøver med karakteren 02 eller derover” (each of the three parts at 02 or above) and that the written and oral parts need not be in the same term. Our own notice board for this exam says the same and leaves the same-term rule out.
Both statements are true, but the page is incomplete. The written and oral parts may fall in different terms; the two written components may not. The binding text is BEK 1687/2025 §48 stk.3, and the checker below applies all of it.
The seven grades, part by part
The Danish tests use the 7-point scale (BEK 1759/2024). Each of the three parts gets one of these grades, and each grade is judged on its own for Studieprøven. The descriptions are shortened from the official English translation in the grading regulation.
| Grade | ECTS letter | Meaning | This part in Studieprøven |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | A | Excellent performance, no or only a few minor weaknesses | Passed |
| 10 | B | Very good performance, only minor weaknesses | Passed |
| 7 | C | Good performance with some weaknesses | Passed |
| 4 | D | Fair performance with some major weaknesses | Passed |
| 02 | E | Meets only the minimum requirements | Passed — the lowest pass |
| 00 | Fx | Does not meet the minimum requirements | Not passed |
| -3 | F | Unacceptable in all respects | Not passed |
Grades are not curved: the grading regulation forbids aiming at a set distribution (BEK 1759 §10). What does move from sitting to sitting is the table that turns raw points into grades. SIRI says it analyses a large number of answers after each sitting and then adjusts that points-to-grade table [official: SIRI complaints guide]. That table is not published to candidates, so no one can tell you in advance how many points a 02 needs.
Grade combinations and what they mean
The table shows typical results and what the rule does with them. The last column is our reading of §10 stk.3 together with §48 stk.3; the section on resits below explains why the written part is always reading and writing together.
| Reading | Writing | Oral | Same term for reading and writing? | Result | What you register for next |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | 4 | 02 | Yes | Passed | Nothing — you get a certificate |
| 12 | 00 | 10 | Yes | Not passed | The written part (reading and writing) |
| 4 | 7 | 00 | Yes | Not passed | The oral part only |
| 00 | -3 | 00 | Yes | Not passed | The whole test |
| 7 (summer) | 4 (winter) | 7 | No | Not passed | The written part, both components in one term |
Studieprøven pass checker
Pick your three grades and say whether reading and writing came from the same term. The checker applies the rule in BEK 1687/2025 §48 stk.3 and tells you which part, if any, you would register for again and what that costs in 2026.
The pass rule is official (BEK 1687/2025 §48 stk.3; BEK 1759/2024 §12). What to re-register for is our reading of §10 stk.3 together with §48 stk.3: the written part is reading plus writing, and the two must pass in one term. The fee is SIRI’s 2026 figure for one part; §12 stk.5 says a part-only resit “kan opkræves” (may be charged) at half the fee. Grade bars are set by each institution and are not published centrally. Nothing you choose is stored.
The average that exists but does not decide
It is tempting to write that Studieprøven “has no average”. The regulation does not say that. The same §48 stk.3 ends: if the test is taken over several terms under §10 stk.2 or 3, “beregnes gennemsnittet på baggrund af resultaterne opnået ved de to prøveterminer” — the average is calculated from the results of the two terms [official]. So an average is computed; it simply plays no part in pass or fail. We have not seen a current certificate form, so we cannot say whether the average is printed on it. The grading regulation gives averages to one decimal (BEK 1759 §13 stk.2). The checker above shows an unweighted mean for that reason, and labels it as our arithmetic.
The 2025 UIM activity report also notes that the three Studieprøven parts are weighted equally [official: UIM 2025]. Whether a particular university looks at your mean, at each grade or only at the word “bestået” is that institution’s decision, and it is not published in one place.
Resitting one part
Studieprøven has a rule that PD3 does not. §10 stk.3: “Bestås kun den skriftlige eller den mundtlige del af Studieprøven, kan prøvedeltageren aflægge den del af prøven, som ikke blev bestået, i en senere prøvetermin” — if you pass only the written or only the oral part, you may take the part you did not pass in a later term [official]. SIRI’s registration page adds that the earlier passed result is then transferred and you get a certificate [official].
The regulation speaks of two parts (dele): the written part, which is reading plus writing, and the oral part. The components inside the written part are not separate parts for this purpose, and §48 stk.3 requires reading and writing to pass in the same term. Our reading: if you fail only reading, you re-register for the written part and sit reading and writing again; a good writing grade from an earlier term cannot be combined with a new reading grade. SIRI has not published a worked example of this case, so confirm it with your provider when you register.
| Situation | Register for | Fee (self-studier, 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oral passed, written not passed | The written part (reading + writing) | 987 kr | §10 stk.3; §12 stk.5; SIRI registration page |
| Written passed, oral not passed | The oral part | 987 kr | §10 stk.3; §12 stk.5; SIRI registration page |
| Neither part passed | The whole test | 1,974 kr | SIRI registration page and dates page |
| One part missed through documented illness | That part, in a later term, with the provider’s permission | Up to 987 kr | §10 stk.2; §12 stk.5 |
| Enrolled on module 6 | Through your language school | 0 kr | SIRI Studieprøven page |
On money: SIRI’s page is plain — “Gebyret for en skriftlig eller en mundtlig del svarer til halvdelen af gebyret for en fuld prøve” (the fee for one part is half the fee for a full test) [official]. The regulation is softer: a new fee of half “kan opkræves” — may be charged (§12 stk.5). In 2026 the full fee is 1,974 kr and a part is 987 kr [official: SIRI dates page]. Why the regulation’s own figure is 1,888 kr is explained in the self-study, fee and registration guide.
Where other pages get this wrong
A split across terms is a resit rule, not a way to plan the test.
Commonly published instead: Our own notice board for this exam presents taking the written part one term and the oral part another as a planning option.
The regulation starts from the opposite: you register for both parts and take them in the same term (§10 stk.1). Only two things let a part move to a later term: documented illness, with the provider’s permission (§10 stk.2), and a part not passed (§10 stk.3).
Illness on the day
If documented illness stops you from taking the written or the oral part, the provider’s head can allow you to take that part in a later term (§10 stk.2). Illness must be documented with a current doctor’s statement (aktuel lægeerklæring), and SIRI asks you to bring it or be able to send it when you contact the provider [official: SIRI registration page]. The result of the part you did take is combined with the later one. If you do not show up without such a statement, you have no right to take the test (§19), and the ordinary rules apply.
Certificate or attestation
| Document | When you get it | Who issues it | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prøvebevis (certificate) | When both the written and the oral part are passed | The provider where the last part was passed, if the test ran over several terms | §52 stk.2; SIRI registration page |
| Attestation for one part | On request, if you passed only the written or only the oral part | The provider, on SIRI’s form | §54 stk.2 |
| Attest with your results | On request, if you did not pass | The provider | SIRI registration page |
| Replacement certificate | If the original is lost; free of charge | The provider | §53 stk.2 |
This is a real difference from PD1–PD3, where a certificate is issued once both parts are taken, pass or fail (§52 stk.1). For Studieprøven the certificate means you passed; below that you get an attestation. Only one original certificate may exist (§53), so keep it safe and send copies.
Complaints and what they can cost
A complaint about the test material, the conduct of the test or the grading goes in writing, with reasons, to the provider within 4 weeks of the result [official: SIRI complaints guide]. The provider decides whether to reject it or pass it to SIRI. A complaint about the provider’s own decision in your case is due within 2 weeks of that decision. If a written complaint succeeds you are typically offered re-marking by a new examiner and censor; an oral complaint that succeeds means a new oral at the next term. SIRI warns that re-marking or a re-test “kan resultere i en lavere karakter” — can give a lower grade.
The oral is assessed by an examiner and a censor together; SIRI’s candidate page says the censor takes notes, keeps time and helps decide the grade [official: SIRI]. Until 1 March 2026 the regulation also said the Studieprøven oral was always graded with a censor appointed for it (§41 stk.2); BEK 300/2026 repealed that paragraph, so we no longer print it as a rule [official]. What happens in those thirty minutes is in the oral exam guide; the written day is in the written exam guide.
What institutions ask for
SIRI says Studieprøven can meet “en række” — a number of — higher-education institutions’ Danish-language entry requirements for applicants without a Danish-language qualifying exam, and sends readers to each institution and to ug.dk [official: SIRI “Om prøverne”]. It publishes no list of which programmes accept it or what grade they want. Some programmes may ask for more than a pass in some or all parts; that is set by the institution, not by the test. Check the admission page of each programme you apply to, and use the optional bar in the checker to see how your grades compare.
One example, checked on the University of Copenhagen’s admission page on 29 September 2026: for bachelor programmes KU accepts Studieprøven as documentation of Danish if you pass every part with at least 02 — “Du skal bestå alle dele med minimum karakteren 2” — and for odontology (dentist), dental hygiene and medicine (Copenhagen and Køge) with 7 in each part [official: KU]. KU adds a condition that is easy to miss: if you document Danish with Studieprøven, you must at the same time document that you passed mother-tongue instruction at the highest level in your upper-secondary education [official: KU]. That is one university’s rule, not a national one; other institutions set their own.
For current dates, registration windows and official changes, follow the Studieprøven notice board.
What is the pass mark for Studieprøven?
At least 02 in each of the three parts: reading, writing and oral. Reading and writing must also be passed in the same term.
Can a high oral grade make up for a failed reading grade?
No. Studieprøven is not passed on an average. Each part needs 02 on its own.
Do reading and writing have to be passed in the same term?
Yes. BEK 1687/2025 §48 stk.3 requires it. SIRI’s candidate page leaves this out, but the regulation is binding.
Can I take the oral in a different term from the written part?
Only if you did not pass one part, or if documented illness stopped you. Otherwise you register for and take both parts in the same term.
I passed the oral but failed writing. What do I retake?
The written part, which is reading and writing together. Your passed oral result is transferred.
How much does it cost to retake one part?
987 kr for a self-studier in 2026, half the full fee. The regulation says the half fee may be charged.
Is there an average grade on Studieprøven?
An average can be calculated, including across two terms, but it does not decide whether you pass.
Do I get a certificate if I fail?
No certificate. You can ask for an attest with your results, or an attestation for a part you did pass.
How long do I have to complain about my grade?
4 weeks from the result, in writing and with reasons, to the provider. A re-mark or re-test can lower the grade.
How many times can I take Studieprøven?
We found no limit in the regulation or on SIRI’s pages. Each new attempt is a new registration; a self-studier pays the fee again, while a candidate on module 6 takes the test free.
What grade do universities require?
Not published centrally. Each institution sets its own Danish requirement; check the admission page of the programme.
