Samhällskunskap medborgarskapsprov: All 13 Topics on One Page

Checked 13 October 2026. From Sverige i fokus (UHR with Skolverket, 1st edition 2026, corrected version 2026-08-10), UHR’s study-material page and förordning (2026:451) 2 §. A new edition of the guide would change chapters, pages and facts; UHR’s page lists every correction. Page counts and the grouping into blocks are ours.

What “samhällskunskap” means in medborgarskapsprovet

The civics part of medborgarskapsprovet tests “grundläggande kunskaper om det svenska samhället” — basic knowledge of Swedish society (lag (2001:82) 13 §). Two official texts say what that is. The ordinance lists eleven areas as examples (förordning (2026:451) 2 §). And UHR, with Skolverket and on the government’s instruction, has written a study guide, Sverige i fokus, whose introduction says “Provet kommer att baseras på det här materialet” — the test will be based on this material [official: Sverige i fokus, p.4].

So the syllabus is a book you can hold: 13 chapters on pages 5 to 47, free as a PDF and as 14 audio files on UHR’s site. This page is a map of it. It does not replace reading it, and it is in English while the guide and the test are in Swedish.

Our count of the guide’s page ranges, 43 pages in all. This shows where the guide spends its space. It is not a count of test questions: no past paper has been published.

Where other pages get this wrong

Nobody can tell you which topics “come most often”.

Commonly published instead: ranked lists of “most asked topics” or “high-weightage chapters” for medborgarskapsprovet.

A ranking needs past papers. The only sitting so far was the August 2026 trial test and its questions are not public; UHR has published five example questions. The honest substitute is the guide’s own page count, shown above and labelled as such.

A reading order that makes the chapters easier

The guide can be read front to back, but the chapters lean on each other. This order is our suggestion, not UHR’s: it puts the chapters that explain the vocabulary before the chapters that use it.

BlockKapitelPagesWhy together
A. How the country is run2, 3, 46Democracy, the three levels of government and elections share one vocabulary. Read them as a single unit.
B. Law, media and rights5, 6, 711The fundamental laws in kapitel 5 are the basis of free media in kapitel 6 and of the rights in kapitel 7.
C. Work, tax and welfare8, 95Who earns, who pays tax, and which level of government provides which service.
D. History and the world10, 1110The history chapter ends where the foreign-policy chapter begins; the dates overlap.
E. Country, religion, traditions1, 12, 1311Mostly names, numbers and dates that can be learned last and refreshed just before the test.

The pages add up to 43. Block D is the heaviest reading for its length: kapitel 10 is the longest chapter in the guide and carries the most years.

Four things in the guide that are easy to get wrong

  • The corrected edition. Version 2026-08-10 changed two facts: the UN was founded in 1945, not 1946 (p.39), and a caption now says Sweden has about 1,400 preserved churches and church ruins of medieval origin, not 3,000 medieval churches (p.43). UHR says having read the earlier version will not affect your result.
  • Facts with a date stamp. The party list is headed as the parties sitting in the Riksdag “fram till valet 2026”, and the guide mentions a 2026 government proposal on the age of criminal responsibility as a proposal. Learn them as the guide states them; it is the text the test is based on.
  • Counts that look alike. The guide has 21 counties and 21 regions, 25 provinces and 290 municipalities, all in the first three chapters.
  • The same year in two chapters. 1809 appears in the history of democracy (a new constitution), in the chapter on defence (the war in which Finland was lost, 1808–1809) and under the national day. One year, three contexts.

All four points are from Sverige i fokus and UHR’s study-material page.

Reading it in Swedish

UHR offers the guide as a PDF you may print and as audio, one file for the introduction and one for each chapter. Listening while following the text is the cheapest way to learn how the key terms sound and are spelled. If Swedish is the hard part, the språkkrav guide sets out which level the law asks for and lists words from UHR’s example questions.

When a block is done, test it: the 30 practice questions are grouped by these same 13 chapters and give a score per chapter, and the format guide has a separate mini test of ten.

Practise it, don't just read it

For kapitel 2 to 4 there is a full quiz in Swedish on the exam page.

One Swedish practice quiz is live on the exam page today: 12 questions on democracy and how Sweden is governed, four options each, with the reason for every answer. None of its questions is repeated on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What is the syllabus for medborgarskapsprovet?

The study guide Sverige i fokus, published by UHR with Skolverket. Its introduction says the test will be based on it. The ordinance also lists eleven knowledge areas, which the guide’s 13 chapters cover.

How many chapters does Sverige i fokus have?

Thirteen, on pages 5 to 47, after a one-page introduction. The whole document is 48 pages.

Which chapter is the longest?

Kapitel 10, Sweden’s modern history, at seven pages. The country Sweden and human rights follow with five each, by our count of the page ranges.

Which topics are asked most often?

Nobody outside UHR can say. No past paper has been published and the only sitting so far was a trial test.

Is the guide available in English?

UHR publishes it in Swedish, as a PDF and as audio files. The test can only be taken in Swedish.

Has the guide been corrected?

Yes, on 10 August 2026: the founding year of the UN (1945) on page 39 and a caption about medieval churches (about 1,400) on page 43.

Do I need to know current politics, such as the 2026 election result?

The test is based on the guide, and the guide lists the parties in the Riksdag up to the 2026 election. We do not know how UHR will handle later events and do not guess.

Can I listen to the guide?

Yes. UHR’s study-material page has 14 mp3 files: the introduction and each of the 13 chapters.

Is samhällskunskap the same as the school subject?

The word is the same, and a pass grade in the school subject samhällskunskap from year 9, upper secondary or Komvux is itself accepted instead of the test. The test’s content is defined by the ordinance and the guide.
