Checked 28 September 2026. Standards from the Directorate letters of 2019, 09.09.2021 and 19.12.2022, reproduced in the 2026 circle notifications (official). The letters do not publish how the 25 marks are computed; nothing here guesses it.
The Data Entry Skill Test is the second and last stage of the PA/SA exam. It is taken on a computer, it lasts 15 minutes, it carries 25 marks, and it is qualifying only: the marks do not enter the merit list, which is drawn on Paper-I alone. But a candidate who misses the qualifying mark is out, whatever they scored in Paper-I, so it is the one stage where a strong candidate can lose everything in a quarter of an hour.
The standard has changed three times since 2019, and guides still print the old figures. For every exam notified on or after 1 January 2023, including the 2026 exam, the PA/SA test is 1,000 key depressions, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes. The Postman and Mail Guard test is 600.
Directorate letter No. 17-08/2018-SPN-I dated 19.12.2022; TN memo 27.08.2026.
The standard, and how it changed
| Letter | Applied to | PA/SA depressions | Qualifying (Gen / OBC-EWS / SC-ST / PwD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annexure C, 10.05.2019 | 2019 exams | 1,200 ±5% | 75% / 70% / 65% / 65% (letter of 2019) |
| 09.09.2021 | 2021 vacancy year (continued for 2022 by letter 22.07.2022) | 800 ±5% | 60% / 60% / 50% / 50% |
| 19.12.2022 | Exams notified on or after 01.01.2023 | 1,000 ±5% | 75% / 75% / 60% / 60% |
Official: the three letters as reproduced in Annexure-II of the Karnataka 2026 notification. The time (15 minutes) and the maximum (25 marks) did not change.
| Letter | Postman / Mail Guard depressions | Qualifying (Gen / OBC-EWS / SC-ST / PwD) |
|---|---|---|
| 05.04.2022 (common exam) | 600 ±5% | 60% / 60% / 50% / 50% |
| 19.12.2022 | 600 ±5% | 75% / 75% / 60% / 60% |
Official: DoP letter 05.04.2022 (Paper-IV) and letter 19.12.2022 para 2(i).
So the typing load went down in 2021 and back up in 2023, and the bar to pass went down and back up with it. The present rule asks for more than the 2021 rule on both counts: a quarter more text, and 75% instead of 60% for a general candidate. Anyone relying on the advice of a colleague who passed in 2021 or 2022 is preparing for an easier test than the one they will sit.
Where other pages get this wrong
The PA/SA DEST is 1,000 key depressions in 15 minutes, with qualifying marks of 75% (UR, OBC, EWS) and 60% (SC, ST, PwBD).
Commonly published instead: “1,200 key depressions” and “pass/fail, no marks”, including on an older page of this site; and “1,000 key depressions” for the Postman / Mail Guard test.
The 1,200 figure is the 2019 standard, replaced twice since. The test is marked out of 25 and has a qualifying mark by category — Tamil Nadu’s 2026 result prints 18.75 and 15. The Postman and Mail Guard test is 600 depressions under both the 05.04.2022 letter and the 19.12.2022 letter.
What 1,000 key depressions in 15 minutes means
A key depression is a single key press — letters, figures, spaces and punctuation all count. The ±5% is the tolerance on the length of the passage. The per-minute figures below are our arithmetic from the official totals, and the words-per-minute column uses the common typing convention of five key presses to a word; the Department does not state either.
| Test | Key depressions | Per minute (ours) | Words per minute at 5 keys (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PA/SA, full passage | 1,000 | 66.7 | 13.3 |
| PA/SA, lower edge (−5%) | 950 | 63.3 | 12.7 |
| PA/SA, upper edge (+5%) | 1,050 | 70 | 14 |
| Postman / Mail Guard | 600 | 40 | 8 |
| Postman / Mail Guard, lower edge | 570 | 38 | 7.6 |
Totals official (letter 19.12.2022); per-minute and per-word figures are our arithmetic.
Thirteen or fourteen words a minute sounds slow, and for someone who types every day at a counter it is. But the test is on an unfamiliar machine, with an unfamiliar passage that often mixes figures and names, under exam nerves, and the mark depends on accuracy as well as completion. The circulars do not publish the formula that turns speed and errors into a mark out of 25, and we will not invent one. Treat the target as the speed you must reach with almost no corrections, not the speed you reach on a good day.
Is your typing fast enough for the DEST?
Time yourself for 15 minutes on any data-entry passage and count the key depressions (every key press, spaces included), or enter your speed per minute.
Targets from DoP letter 19.12.2022: 1,000 key depressions ±5% (950 to 1,050) for PA/SA, 600 ±5% (570 to 630) for Postman and Mail Guard, in 15 minutes. The per-minute rates and the 5-keys-per-word conversion are our arithmetic; the letters do not publish how the 25 marks are computed from speed and errors, so this checks speed only. The corrections box is our own illustration: it simply removes the keys you had to redo from your total, which is not an official scoring rule.
Who is called to the DEST
Not everyone who qualifies in Paper-I sits the DEST. The 19.12.2022 letter fixes the number called at three times the vacancies declared at notification. If the vacancies are revised before the Paper-I result, the revised figure is notified and the shortlist is three times that; a revision after the result is allowed only in exceptional circumstances with the approval of the Director General of Postal Services.
| Rule | Before | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Shortlist for the DEST | “3 to 5 times” the vacancies (2019 amendment) | 3 times the vacancies declared at notification (19.12.2022) |
| Postman / Mail Guard shortlist | 5 times the Postman and Mail Guard vacancies (05.04.2022) | 3 times the total Postman and Mail Guard vacancies (as printed in the AP notification of 16.07.2025) |
| Visually handicapped candidates | Exemption on a medical certificate of permanent unfitness | Exempt from the DEST from recruitment year 2022 (letter 21.11.2022) |
| Merit (PA/SA) | Paper-I only | Paper-I only; the DEST is qualifying |
| Merit (Postman / Mail Guard) | Paper-I + Paper-II (05.04.2022) | Paper-I + Paper-II; Paper-III and the DEST are qualifying |
Official: letters of 2019, 05.04.2022, 21.11.2022 and 19.12.2022, reproduced in the Karnataka 2026 notification. The current Postman / Mail Guard shortlist is from the Andhra Pradesh Circle notification RE/3-7/LDCE/2025 dated 16.07.2025, which applies the 05.04.2022 pattern as amended on 19.12.2022.
Three times the vacancies is a generous shortlist. A circle with 100 posts calls about 300 candidates to type. The DEST itself is a gate rather than a race: you are not competing with other typists, only against the qualifying mark. Being called is not the same as being selected, though — at most one in three of those called can get a post (our arithmetic from the 3× rule), because selection still goes down the Paper-I merit list (Paper-I plus Paper-II for Postman and Mail Guard) until the vacancies run out.
When the DEST is held
| Circle and year | Paper-I | DEST | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu 2026 | 28.06.2026 | 16.08.2026 | 27.08.2026 |
| Odisha 2025 | 17.08.2025 | 14.09.2025 | 17.09.2025 |
| Andhra Pradesh 2025 | 17.08.2025 | 07.09.2025 | 16.09.2025 |
Official: the three result memos.
In each case the DEST came three to seven weeks after Paper-I, once the answer key was final and the shortlist drawn, and the final result followed within days. That gap is your preparation window if you did not start typing practice earlier. Several circles also collect the cadre and division preference form at the DEST — the Karnataka 2026 notification says so in terms — so arrive with your preferences decided.
A practice routine that matches the test
Our suggestion, not an official one. Practise in 15-minute blocks, not in one-minute bursts, because stamina and accuracy fall off late in a timed passage. Use passages that mix names, addresses, figures and punctuation, since that is the character of postal data. Count key depressions honestly, including spaces. Record how many keys you had to correct in each block, and cut that number before you push for speed. When your 15-minute total clears 1,050 with only a handful of corrections, you have a margin over the top of the tolerance band.

Practise it, don't just read it
The DEST only opens the door that Paper-I earns. Keep the paper practice going between the two stages.
The ProSyllabus India Post PA/SA library has 13 ten-question quizzes: two on basic arithmetic (percentage, profit and interest; number system, ratio, work and speed), three on general awareness (Indian geography; polity and civics; Indian culture and the freedom struggle), one on ethics and conduct, one on the organisation of the Department and the Citizen’s Charter, three on products and services (Postal Life Insurance and social-security schemes; money remittance and India Post Payments Bank; Speed Post, parcels and value-added services), one on IT modernisation, and two on savings schemes. There is no reasoning quiz yet.
How many key depressions are in the PA/SA DEST?
1,000 key depressions, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes, for exams notified on or after 1 January 2023.
What is the DEST qualifying mark?
75% of 25 (18.75) for UR, OBC and EWS, and 60% (15) for SC, ST and PwBD.
Is the DEST pass or fail?
It is marked out of 25 and is qualifying: you must reach the qualifying mark, but the marks are not added to merit.
How many key depressions are in the Postman DEST?
600, plus or minus 5%, in 15 minutes.
How many candidates are called for the DEST?
Three times the vacancies declared at notification. For PA/SA they come from those who qualify in Paper-I; for Postman and Mail Guard, from those who qualify in Paper-I and Paper-II combined and in Paper-III separately.
Are visually handicapped candidates exempt from the DEST?
Yes, from recruitment year 2022, by the Directorate letter of 21.11.2022.
Was the DEST ever 1,200 key depressions?
Yes, in the 2019 pattern. It became 800 in 2021 and 1,000 for exams notified from 1 January 2023.
How fast must I type for the DEST?
Our arithmetic: 1,000 key depressions in 15 minutes is about 67 a minute, or about 13 words a minute at five keys a word.
When is the DEST held?
Separately, some weeks after Paper-I. In Tamil Nadu 2026 it was on 16.08.2026, seven weeks after the paper.
Does a good DEST score help in merit or ties?
No. PA/SA merit is Paper-I only (Paper-I plus Paper-II for Postman and Mail Guard), and in PA/SA equal marks are resolved by inter-se seniority.
