Checked 29 September 2026. Vacancies are the tentative figures printed in each circle’s 2026 notification, or the final figures in its result memo (official; Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh are from results). No all-India total is published. Circles not listed either notified vacancies later or could not be read.
We found no single national vacancy figure for the PA/SA LDCE in the official documents we checked. Each of the postal circles runs its own exam on a common date and prints its own vacancies in its own notification, usually as “tentative” and “subject to revision”, split by cadre and by category. Some circles leave the table blank and notify the numbers later. This guide gathers the 2026 figures from every circle document we could read, adds the two 2025 results for comparison, and explains what happens to a post nobody in the LDCE fills.
2026 vacancies in the circles we could read
| Circle | PA (CO/RO) | PA (Post Offices) | SA (RMS) | Total | PwBD within |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu (result, 27.08.2026) | 2 | 273 | 82 | 357 | 16 |
| Karnataka (result, 23.09.2026) | 7 | 198 | 38 | 243 | 10 |
| Gujarat (result, 24.09.2026) | 2 | 111 | 39 | 152 | 6 |
| West Bengal (notification, 11.05.2026) | 4 | 44 | 37 | 85 | 4 |
| Chhattisgarh (result, 16.09.2026) | 2 | 8 | 4 | 14 | 3 |
| Jammu and Kashmir (notification, May 2026) | 2 | 7 | 4 | 13 | 0 |
| Six circles together (our sum) | 19 | 641 | 204 | 864 | 39 |
Official: the circle documents listed under Sources. Karnataka and West Bengal totals are our sums of the cadre rows; the Karnataka and Gujarat SA rows are RMS including Mail Motor Service. Karnataka’s result memo of 23.09.2026 prints the same 7 / 198 / 38 split it notified in May, so those figures are now final. PwBD posts are horizontal — counted inside the totals, not added to them.
From the table above. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh are the figures in their result memos; West Bengal and J&K are the tentative figures notified in May, which a later result memo can revise.
The range is wide. Tamil Nadu’s 357 posts are more than twenty-seven times Jammu and Kashmir’s 13, and just under three in four of all the posts in these six circles are in the Post Office cadre of Postal Assistants (641 of 864, our sum). The Circle and Regional Office cadre is tiny in all six lists (2 to 7 posts), which matters for your preference form: listing it first costs nothing, but with so few posts only a few candidates in each circle can get it.
| Circle | What the 2026 notification says |
|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh | Division- and unit-wise vacancies “will be notified separately” |
| Jharkhand | Vacancies “will be notified later” |
| Delhi | Tentative vacancies in an annexure to the notification |
| Uttarakhand | PA (Post Office) vacancies “will be intimated in due course” |
Official: the 2026 notifications of those circles (scanned). We have not printed a figure we could not read.
The category split
| Circle | UR | SC | ST | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | 278 | 23 | 56 | 357 |
| Karnataka | 212 | 26 | 5 | 243 |
| Gujarat | 120 | 22 | 10 | 152 |
| West Bengal | 65 | 7 | 13 | 85 |
| Chhattisgarh | 10 | 3 | 1 | 14 |
| Jammu and Kashmir | 10 | 3 | 0 | 13 |
Official figures; Karnataka and West Bengal category totals are our sums of the three cadre rows. Gujarat and Chhattisgarh print their own totals.
There are only three vertical categories — UR, SC and ST — because this is a promotion, and reservation in promotion covers SC and ST but not OBC or EWS. Persons with benchmark disabilities have a horizontal reservation of 4% under the DoPT office memorandum of 17.05.2022, which applies to promotion in cadres where direct recruitment does not exceed 75%. PA/SA qualifies, since direct recruitment is 60%. The PwBD posts are then split among the visually handicapped, the hearing handicapped, the orthopaedically handicapped and “others”, and a post not filled in one year can be carried to the next, as Tamil Nadu did with one PwBD (others) post from 2025.
Reading the PwBD columns
| Circle and cadre | VH | HH | OH | Others | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karnataka, PA (CO/RO) | 1 (of 2025) | 1 (of 2025) | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| Karnataka, PA (Post Offices) | 2 | 2 (1 of 2025) | 1 | 2 | 7 |
| Karnataka, SA | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| Tamil Nadu, PA (Post Offices) | 3 | 3 | 2 | 4 (1 carried from 2025) | 12 |
| Tamil Nadu, SA | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
Official: Karnataka notification 11.05.2026, para 2(A); TN memo 27.08.2026, para 4. VH visually handicapped, HH hearing handicapped, OH orthopaedically handicapped.
Read these columns as seats reserved inside the totals, not seats added to them. A candidate with a benchmark disability who is selected on a PwBD post is also counted in their vertical category (UR, SC or ST), so the Karnataka total stays 243. The “of 2025” notes show how a PwBD post that nobody could fill last year is carried into this year’s list instead of lapsing. Two practical consequences follow. A PwBD candidate has to reach the PwBD qualifying mark of 33% and is then selected in merit order against the PwBD posts, which is how Odisha’s 2025 list could select an orthopaedically handicapped candidate on 38. And a visually handicapped candidate does not sit the DEST at all, so their selection turns on Paper-I alone.
For everyone else, the useful comparison is posts in your category against the officials in your category who are eligible and likely to sit. The notifications do not print the second number. Your division office does know roughly how many applied, and asking is a reasonable question.
For comparison: the 2025 lists
| Circle | PA (CO/RO) | PA (Post Offices) | SA | Total | UR / SC / ST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh 2025 | 5 | 78 | 16 | 99 | 72 / 17 / 10 |
| Odisha 2025 | 2 | 45 | 3 | 50 | 48 / 2 / 0 |

Where an unfilled post goes
A PA/SA post in the LDCE quota is not lost if no eligible candidate qualifies for it. (A selected candidate who declines is a different case: the next candidate in merit is taken.) The Recruitment Rules 2022 lay down a chain, and each link only gets what the one before could not fill. First, Category A officials through the LDCE. Then Category B officials — those with 8 years of total service counting regular GDS years, or 5 years if their GDS service was on or before 17.06.2022. Then the competitive exam limited to the circle’s Gramin Dak Sevaks, held on the same paper and the same day. Only then does the post go to the next year’s open-market direct recruitment.
| Order | Filled by | Evidence it happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | LDCE, Category A officials (MTS, Postman, Mail Guard and other Level 1–3) | Odisha 2025: 49 of 50 selected |
| 2 | LDCE, Category B officials | Odisha 2025: 1 selected; AP 2025: none left except 1 |
| 3 | Competitive exam limited to GDS of the circle | TN 2026: ST posts “carried forward to CE and filled up” |
| 4 | Next year’s direct recruitment through open competition | Rules, column 10 |
Official: Recruitment Rules 2022, column 10; TN memo 27.08.2026, para 8; Odisha and AP 2025 results.
The Tamil Nadu example is the clearest. Its 2026 list had 56 ST posts, and the memo says the ST posts were carried to the GDS exam and filled there. For a GDS reading this, that is the whole opportunity: the GDS exam has no vacancy of its own, only what the departmental candidates leave, and those leftovers are largest in categories and cadres where the circle has few eligible officials.
The 2026 calendar

The pattern has been stable: notification in the second week of May, applications through the division within about three weeks, the paper in late June, the DEST in August or September and results soon after. If that holds, the 2027 notifications will appear in May 2027 with vacancies counted for 1 January to 31 December 2027. Applications go to your Divisional Office or controlling unit, not online, and there is no fee in the notifications we read. The division-wise split usually follows later — Karnataka’s notification says so in terms.

Practise it, don't just read it
A post is only as reachable as your Paper-I mark. The library’s savings-scheme and products quizzes cover the counter knowledge the paper tests.
The ProSyllabus India Post PA/SA library has 13 ten-question quizzes: two on basic arithmetic (percentage, profit and interest; number system, ratio, work and speed), three on general awareness (Indian geography; polity and civics; Indian culture and the freedom struggle), one on ethics and conduct, one on the organisation of the Department and the Citizen’s Charter, three on products and services (Postal Life Insurance and social-security schemes; money remittance and India Post Payments Bank; Speed Post, parcels and value-added services), one on IT modernisation, and two on savings schemes. There is no reasoning quiz yet.

How many PA/SA vacancies does Tamil Nadu have in 2026?
357: 2 in the Circle and Regional Offices, 273 in Post Offices and 82 Sorting Assistants, with 16 PwBD posts within them.
How many PA/SA vacancies does Karnataka have in 2026?
243: 7 in the Circle and Regional Offices, 198 in Post Offices and 38 Sorting Assistants, as notified in May and confirmed in the result memo of 23.09.2026.
How many PA/SA vacancies does Gujarat have in 2026?
152, per the result memo of 24.09.2026: 2 in the Circle and Regional Offices, 111 in Post Offices and 39 Sorting Assistants (UR 120, SC 22, ST 10), with 6 PwBD posts within them.

No. The LDCE is a promotion, and vacancies are split only into UR, SC and ST, with a horizontal PwBD reservation.
What happens to LDCE posts nobody fills?
They go to Category B officials, then to the competitive exam for GDS, and then to the next year’s direct recruitment.
When was the 2026 PA/SA exam notified?
Circle notifications were issued on 11.05.2026, after a model notification of 06.05.2026, with applications closing on 29.05.2026.
Is there an application fee?
None appears in the 2026 circle notifications we read. Applications are submitted through the Divisional Office.
What is the PwBD reservation?
4% of vacancies, under the DoPT office memorandum of 17.05.2022, split among visual, hearing, orthopaedic and other disabilities.
When will the 2027 PA/SA LDCE be notified?
Not announced. If the recent pattern holds, circles will notify in May 2027.
