Checked 3 October 2026. Pay is from the Military Nursing Service Pay Rules 2017 (Level 10, MSP Rs 10,800) and the DA of 60% from 1 January 2026; DA changes twice a year and a July 2026 revision had not been announced on 3 October 2026. The bond amount, stipend and tenure are not printed in any advertisement we read.
The Army's B.Sc (Nursing) advertisement makes four promises about what follows admission: free ration, accommodation, uniform allowance and a monthly stipend during the course; an Agreement/Bond to serve as an officer in the Military Nursing Service; a Permanent or Short Service Commission on successful completion; and, as an officer, the pay set by the Military Nursing Service Pay Rules. It says very little about the numbers: no stipend amount, no bond amount, no tenure. This guide separates what is printed from what is only rumoured, does the pay arithmetic from the official Pay Rules, and sets the result beside a civilian nursing-officer post.
Military Nursing Service Pay Rules 2017; Cabinet decision of 18 April 2026. The gross is our arithmetic: (56,100 + 10,800) x 1.60.
During the course: what is printed
The 2026 advertisement says that during training the candidates are provided with free ration, accommodation, uniform allowance and a monthly stipend, as per rules amended from time to time. That is all. The stipend amount is not printed in the 2017, 2020, 2025 or 2026 advertisements, and web figures for it range from about Rs 250 to Rs 17,000 with no source, so none is given here. Tuition is not mentioned either way; the notice lists what is provided and does not name a course fee.
The bond: what the advertisement says and what it leaves out
Every advertisement since 2017 says the selected candidate executes an Agreement or Bond to serve in the Military Nursing Service. The 2026 text adds how it is enforced. If a candidate withdraws, her training is terminated, or she refuses the commission when it is offered, she must pay bond money in proportion to the time she has been trained at the institute. A candidate who withdraws more than 7 days after admission (after 4 pm on that day) pays the bond money as set in the agreement she signed at admission.
| Advertisement | Service the bond requires | Amount printed |
|---|---|---|
| 2017 | "to serve in the Military Nursing Service (MNS) for 5 years" | No |
| 2020 | To serve in the Military Nursing Service; no number of years | No |
| 2025 | To serve in the Armed Forces Medical Services as an MNS officer; no number of years | No |
| 2026 | To serve as an officer in the MNS of the Armed Forces Medical Services; no number of years | No |
Read from the advertisements of the four years. Only the 2017 text gives a duration (5 years). Later texts say the bond is "as per agreement" and do not give the amount.
Where other pages get this wrong
No Army advertisement we read prints the bond amount or the years of service for 2020 to 2026.
Commonly published instead: A specific bond figure, or "5+5+4 years", quoted as the rule for this course.
The only duration in any advertisement is 5 years in 2017. The amount is fixed in the agreement you sign at admission and payable in proportion to the time trained if she withdraws or refuses the commission. Ask for the agreement text before you sign, and treat any figure on a web page as unverified.
Commission: Permanent or Short Service
The 2026 advertisement says: "On successful completion of the BSc(N) course, the candidates will be granted Permanent/Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service." It does not say how the two are decided, what the tenure of a Short Service Commission is, or when a short service officer can be considered for permanent commission. The date of commission determines the date of seniority among all candidates who joined the course in the same year, and, as the 2017 and 2020 advertisements put it, the date of declaration of the university result was the date of commission. The 2026 notice prints the actual commissioning dates for the last two batches; they are in the table in the seat guide and run from August 2024 to May 2026, with two colleges tentatively at September 2026.
The advertisements do not print the rank on commissioning in words. The Military Nursing Service Pay Rules list the ranks and their pay levels, and Lieutenant is the first rank and the one at Level 10, so our reading is that a newly commissioned officer is paid at Level 10. This is our reading of the Pay Rules, not a sentence in the advertisement.
| Rank (Pay Rules 2017, Part B) | Pay level | First cell of the level (Rs) |
|---|---|---|
| Lieutenant | 10 | 56,100 |
| Captain | 10A | 59,000 |
| Major | 10B | 64,100 |
| Lieutenant Colonel | 11 | 1,00,000 |
| Colonel | 12 | 1,14,100 |
| Brigadier | 12B | 1,21,900 |
| Major General | 13B | 1,29,800 |
Ranks and levels from Part B of the Schedule; first cells from Part A (Pay Matrix) of the Military Nursing Service Pay Rules 2017. The Rules say nothing about how long promotion takes, so no timelines are given.
Pay at the Lieutenant level, step by step
Three things make up the pay you can compute from official documents. Basic pay is the cell of Level 10 you are in, starting at Rs 56,100. Military Service Pay is "Rs 10,800 per month" for MNS officers up to the rank of Brigadier, and the Rules count it "as pay for the purpose of computation of dearness allowance and pension". Dearness allowance was raised from 58% to 60% from 1 January 2026 by a Cabinet decision announced on 18 April 2026. DA is not stated in the Pay Rules, so we assume the central DA rate applies to MNS officers. DA has been revised twice a year; a July 2026 revision had not been announced on 3 October 2026.
| Level 10 cell | Basic pay | Military Service Pay | DA at 60% of basic plus MSP (our arithmetic) | Gross a month (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rs 56,100 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 40,140 | Rs 1,07,040 |
| 2 | Rs 57,800 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 41,160 | Rs 1,09,760 |
| 3 | Rs 59,500 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 42,180 | Rs 1,12,480 |
| 4 | Rs 61,300 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 43,260 | Rs 1,15,360 |
| 5 | Rs 63,100 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 44,340 | Rs 1,18,240 |
| 6 | Rs 65,000 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 45,480 | Rs 1,21,280 |
| 7 | Rs 67,000 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 46,680 | Rs 1,24,480 |
| 8 | Rs 69,000 | Rs 10,800 | Rs 47,880 | Rs 1,27,680 |
Our arithmetic: gross = (basic + MSP) x 1.60. It leaves out house rent, transport and other allowances, which depend on posting and are not in these sources, and it leaves out deductions, so it is not the amount that reaches a bank account.
Lieutenant pay calculator: basic, Military Service Pay and DA
Pick a cell in Level 10 of the Military Nursing Service pay matrix and a DA rate. The calculator adds Military Service Pay (Rs 10,800 a month) and applies DA to the total, as rule 5(2)(iii) of the Pay Rules lets MSP count as pay for DA.
Level 10 cells and MSP are from the Military Nursing Service Pay Rules 2017. DA 60% from 1 January 2026 is the Cabinet decision of 18 April 2026; a July 2026 revision had not been announced on 3 October 2026, so change the rate if it has been. Gross is before house rent, transport and other allowances, which depend on posting and are not in these sources, and before deductions. This is our arithmetic and assumes the central DA rate applies.
MNS against a civilian B.Sc Nursing career: a fair, short comparison
Many families weigh the Army route against an ordinary B.Sc Nursing followed by a government nursing-officer post. A comparison is only fair on the points the sources let us compare. The civilian example below is the AIIMS Nursing Officer post advertised through NORCET-11 in July 2026, which is reported to be at Pay Level 7. The first cell of Level 7 is Rs 44,900 in the 7th Pay Commission matrix; the Military Nursing Service Rules carry Levels 10 and above only, so that figure is not from them. We did not find the AIIMS notice itself, so treat the civilian side as reported.
Army: Pay Rules 2017 and DA decision of 18 April 2026. Civilian: Level 7 (reported by Careers360 for NORCET-11) with first cell Rs 44,900; no Military Service Pay. House rent and other allowances are excluded on both sides. Totals: Rs 1,07,040 and Rs 71,840.
| Point | Army B.Sc Nursing (MNS) | Civilian route (AIIMS Nursing Officer, reported) |
|---|---|---|
| Who can enter | Women who qualify NEET (UG), born in a set 8-year window, unmarried, divorced, legally separated or widow without encumbrances, 152 cm, within the weight chart | Not covered by the source we could cite beyond the pay level |
| Cost of the course | Free ration, accommodation, uniform allowance and a monthly stipend; amount not printed | Depends on the college; not covered by these sources |
| Service promised after the degree | A bond to serve as an MNS officer; amount and years not printed after 2017 | Not covered by these sources |
| First pay level | Level 10, first cell Rs 56,100, plus MSP Rs 10,800 | Level 7, first cell Rs 44,900 (reported) |
| Gross a month at the first cell, DA 60%, our arithmetic | Rs 1,07,040 | Rs 71,840 |
| How you are recruited | NEET (UG), then screening at Delhi Cantt; seats are fixed at 220 | A recruitment test run by the employer (NORCET for AIIMS, reported) |
Compared only on points the sources cover. Postings, leave, promotion speed, pension and the nature of the work are not compared because we have no source for them. The bond in the Army route is the price of the free course: leaving early means paying it back in proportion to the time trained.
Practise it, don't just read it
A qualified NEET score opens both routes. For the Army route, the next marks come from the ToGIGE and the interview.
The ProSyllabus MNS library has 10 live topic quizzes: Human Physiology and Body Systems, Genetics and Heredity, Plant Kingdom and Photosynthesis, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Acids, Bases and Salts, Light, Optics and Reflection, English Vocabulary, Synonyms and Antonyms, two on Reading Comprehension Passages and one on Percentage and Profit Loss. They cover NEET-level science and the English side of the ToGIGE; there is no General Intelligence reasoning quiz in the library yet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the salary of an MNS officer?
A Lieutenant is paid at Level 10 of the pay matrix, starting at Rs 56,100, plus Military Service Pay of Rs 10,800 a month and dearness allowance. At DA 60% our arithmetic gives about Rs 1,07,040 a month before house rent and other allowances, and before deductions.
What is the stipend during MNS B.Sc Nursing?
The advertisements say a monthly stipend is provided "as per the rules" and print no amount. Figures on web pages have no source.
What is the MNS bond amount?
It is not printed in any advertisement we read. The amount is in the agreement signed at admission, and the Army charges bond money in proportion to the time trained if you withdraw, are terminated or refuse the commission.
How many years must an MNS nurse serve after the degree?
The 2017 advertisement said 5 years. The 2020, 2025 and 2026 advertisements print no number of years; ask for the agreement text.
Do MNS nurses get a commission?
Yes. On completing the B.Sc (Nursing) course the 2026 advertisement says candidates are granted a Permanent or Short Service Commission in the Military Nursing Service. It does not say how the two are decided.
What rank does an MNS officer start at?
Lieutenant is the first rank in the MNS pay schedule and sits at Level 10. The advertisements do not state the rank in words, so this is our reading of the Pay Rules.
What is Military Service Pay for MNS officers?
Rs 10,800 a month for MNS officers up to Brigadier under the Military Nursing Service Pay Rules 2017, counted as pay for DA and pension.
What is the DA rate for Army officers now?
The Cabinet raised dearness allowance from 58% to 60% from 1 January 2026. A July 2026 revision had not been announced on 3 October 2026. We assume the central rate applies to MNS officers.
Is MNS better than a civilian B.Sc Nursing?
It depends on what you value. On pay at the first cell, our arithmetic is higher for the Army (Rs 1,07,040 against Rs 71,840 for a Level 7 post), and the course is free; the Army route has a bond, fixed seats and entry rules on age and marital status.
When does an MNS cadet get commissioned?
The date follows the university result. The 2026 advertisement prints dates from August 2024 to May 2026 for the 2020 and 2021 batches, with Pune and Mumbai tentatively in September 2026.
