Checked 26 September 2026. From the CET Cell’s CAP Information Brochure for UG & PG Technical Courses 2026-27, Admission Notices No. 1 and No. 5, the seat-acceptance fee notice (19.07.2026), the cut-off-date circular (07.09.2026) and the CAP summary. The 2027-28 brochure may change any rule.
Your MHT CET percentile decides nothing on its own. The seat is decided in the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) the CET Cell runs after the result: a merit list, an option form of up to 300 choices, and four allotment rounds with rules about when a seat becomes final. In 2026-27 two things happened that every candidate for 2027 should know: the seat-acceptance fee rule changed three times in one season, and all admissions closed on a hard date set by the Supreme Court. This guide walks through CAP as it actually ran in 2026, from the official notices.

Admission Notice No. 5 (No. 2240 dated 10.09.2026), the final version of the 2026-27 B.E./B.Tech schedule; Notice No. 1 (02.07.2026) for the original registration date.
The calendar was compressed by an order, not by choice. After the Supreme Court’s order of 12 August 2026 (MA No. 2380/2026) and AICTE’s revised academic calendar of 13 August, the CET Cell issued a circular on 7 September fixing 14 September 2026 as the last date for every admission. That file is titled “Cut-off circular” on the CET Cell site, which is why some pages mistake it for a list of cut-off marks — it is a date. The CET Cell’s own portal now says the admission process for 2026-27 is closed. Registration dates for earlier cycles are only partly on record: the 2024-25 CAP began on 14 July 2024, and Round I acceptance in 2025-26 was extended to 4 August 2025.
Freeze, betterment and the rules that decide for you
| Round | If you are allotted… | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| I | your 1st preference | Auto-freeze: you must accept; you are out of later rounds |
| I | any other preference | Choose Freeze (final) or accept with Not Freeze / Betterment (pay the fee, stay in) |
| II | any of your first 3 preferences | Auto-freeze |
| III | any of your first 6 preferences | Auto-freeze |
| IV | anything, or you keep your seat | Final: “the allotment made and/or retained in Round IV … shall be final” |
CAP Information Brochure 2026-27 (rounds and freezing rules) and Admission Notice No. 5. A betterment allotment automatically cancels the earlier seat; if nothing better comes, the earlier seat is retained. A seat that was not your first preference and that you did not freeze can be left unaccepted and you stay in later rounds — but an auto-frozen or frozen seat you fail to confirm is forfeited, and you are out of later rounds (brochure, Rule on CAP Round I, clauses (b)–(e)).
The practical consequence: what you put at the top of the form is what you get. In Round I your first preference is binding the moment it is allotted; in Round II anything in your first three is; in Round III anything in your first six. A candidate who lists a “safe” college first to be sure of a seat has locked themselves out of every better college below it. Put preferences in the order you would genuinely take them, and use the cut-off guide in this series to check each one against where your merit number is likely to land.
The acceptance fee: what the notices said, in order
| Notice | Date | What it said |
|---|---|---|
| Seat-acceptance fee notice No. 1733 | 19 Jul 2026 | ₹1,000 for the first allotment, ₹2,000 for a second (new seat via betterment), ₹3,000 for a third; non-refundable |
| Admission Notice No. 4 | 13 Aug 2026 | “Allotment wise Seat Acceptance Fee” — paid after each allotment, depending on the number of allotments |
| Admission Notice No. 5 (final schedule) | 10 Sep 2026 | “The Seat Acceptance Fee shall be Rs. 1,000/- for all Candidates… during first seat acceptance only”; non-refundable |
| 2025-26 brochure (previous year) | 2 Jul 2025 | ₹1,000 for all admitted candidates |
Official CET Cell notices, quoted. Press reports from late July 2026 said the escalating fee had been withdrawn before Round I; the CET Cell notices we could read do not record a withdrawal, and Notice No. 4 of 13 August still described an allotment-wise fee. What each candidate actually paid in 2026 is not published. The 2026-27 brochure itself says only “as decided by the Competent Authority”.
So the rule on paper moved from an escalating fee to a flat ₹1,000 paid once, and the final notice of the year — the one that governed Round IV — says ₹1,000 once. For 2027, read the fee clause in that year’s admission notices rather than assuming either version; the CET Cell has shown it will change the rule mid-cycle.
Who gets which share of the seats
| Institution type | Maharashtra-State seats | All India | Institute level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Govt / Govt-aided / university departments — autonomous | 100% State Level | Nil | Nil |
| Same — non-autonomous | 70% Home University, 30% Other than HU | Nil | Nil |
| ICT Mumbai / LIT Nagpur | 70% State Level | 30% | Nil |
| COEP Technological University | 80% State Level | 20% | Nil |
| DBATU Lonere | 85% State Level, 15% Konkan-district candidates | Nil | Nil |
| Unaided private (non-minority) | Autonomous 65% SL; non-autonomous 45.5% HU + 19.5% OHU | 15% | 20% (incl. up to 5% NRI) |
| Govt / aided minority | Autonomous 50% SL; non-autonomous 35% HU + 15% OHU | Nil | Nil (50% minority) |
| Unaided minority | 100% (autonomous) or 70/30 HU/OHU of the M.S. seats | 15% of M.S. seats | min. 20% (≥51% minority) |
Schedule-I, first-year seat allocation, CAP Information Brochure 2026-27. HU = Home University, OHU = Other than Home University, SL = State Level.
Two readings matter. First, at an autonomous institute every Maharashtra seat is state level, so your home district does not help you there; at a non-autonomous one, 70% of seats go to candidates of that institute’s Home University, which can make a college in your own university region much easier than its state-level cut-off suggests. Second, All-India seats exist only at private unaided institutes (15%), ICT and LIT (30%) and COEP (20%) — and they are filled on JEE (Main) in preference to MHT CET, which the CET Cell prefers over MHT CET for them.
Reservation and special seats
| Seat type | Share | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| SC · ST · VJ/DT (NT-A) · NT-B · NT-C · NT-D · OBC · SEBC | 13% · 7% · 3% · 2.5% · 3.5% · 2% · 19% · 10% = 60% | of Maharashtra CAP seats; SEBC “subject to the decision of Hon’ble High Court” |
| EWS | 10% | over and above the sanctioned intake |
| Ladies | 30% | none within Defence, PwD and Orphan seats |
| PwD · Defence · Orphan | 5% · 5% · 1% | within Maharashtra CAP seats (PwD: benchmark disability ≥40%) |
| TFWS | up to 5% of intake | supernumerary; Maharashtra candidates, family income below ₹8 lakh; tuition waived; no change of institute or course |
| OCI / PIO / FN / CIWGC | up to 15% of intake | supernumerary (one-third CIWGC, two-thirds OCI/PIO/FN) |
CAP Information Brochure 2026-27, reservation and special-seat rules. Backward-class candidates other than SC/ST need a non-creamy-layer certificate valid to 31 March 2027 or are treated as General (Notice No. 1).
From the reservation table above; the eight add up to 60%.
Reading a seat code
Every row of a cut-off list and every allotment carries a code like GOPENS or LOBCH. The legend is printed on each page of the CET Cell’s lists: the first letter is the gender quota — G (general seat, open to all genders) or L (ladies-only seat); the last letter is H (Home University seat), O (Other than Home University) or S (State Level); what sits between is the category. So GOPENS is a general-quota, OPEN-category, state-level seat, and LOBCH is a ladies OBC Home-University seat. Special seats — TFWS, EWS, PWD…, DEF…, ORPHAN… — carry their own codes.
Decode a CAP seat code
Legend printed on every CAP cut-off page: starting character G = General, L = Ladies; end character H = Home University, O = Other than Home University, S = State Level; AI = All-India seat. Category middles from the CAP brochure’s reservation table (NT1 = NT-B, NT2 = NT-C, NT3 = NT-D; VJ = VJ/DT, NT-A). TFWS, EWS, PWD…, DEF… and ORPHAN… are special seat types.
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| GOPENS | General · Open · State Level |
| LOPENS | Ladies · Open · State Level |
| GOBCS | General · OBC · State Level |
| GSEBCS | General · SEBC · State Level |
| GSCS / GSTS | General · SC / ST · State Level |
| LOBCH | Ladies · OBC · Home University |
| TFWS | Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme |
| EWS | Economically Weaker Section (over and above intake) |
Decoded from the legend on the 2026 CAP cut-off lists and the brochure’s category list. NT1/NT2/NT3 in codes stand for NT-B/NT-C/NT-D.
How many seats there are, and how many fill
| Academic year | B.E./B.Tech intake | Admitted | Admitted % |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023-24 | 1,58,585 | 1,18,037 | 74.4 (our division) |
| 2024-25 | 1,80,170 | 1,49,078 | 82.7 (our division) |
| 2025-26 | 2,03,160 in 372 institutes | 1,67,069 (vacancy 36,091) | 82.24 (printed) |
CET Cell CAP summary, last three years. The 2023-24/2024-25 and 2025-26 tables use different layouts and may define intake differently. 2026-27 admitted totals were not yet published on 26 September 2026.
| Seat bucket (2026-27 Round I seat matrix) | Seats (our sum of 2,238 course rows, 373 institutes) |
|---|---|
| Sanctioned intake | 1,87,421 |
| Maharashtra-State seats | 1,30,677 |
| All-India seats | 24,193 |
| Minority seats | 17,441 |
| Institute-level seats | 15,110 |
| EWS (over and above) | 15,734 |
| TFWS (supernumerary) | 8,788 |
Our sums from the CET Cell’s provisional Round I seat matrix 2026-27 (file version V1), adding each course row’s printed columns; EWS and TFWS are over and above the sanctioned intake. Press reports of about 2.16 lakh seats in 380 colleges may count a different version or include over-and-above seats — we could not reconcile them.
About one seat in five went unfilled in 2025-26, so a seat somewhere is not the scarce thing — a seat at a particular institute and branch is. That is why the merit number, the order of the option form and the freeze rules matter far more than whether you “qualify”.
Practise it, don't just read it
A few marks move a merit number by thousands in the middle of the list. The MHT CET quizzes cover the Class 12 chapters that carry 80% of the paper.
The ProSyllabus MHT CET library has topic quizzes on laws of motion, rotational dynamics, current electricity, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, equilibrium, organic basics, quadratic equations and complex numbers, and calculus — the first quiz is free.
How many CAP rounds are there for MHT CET B.E./B.Tech?
Four in 2026-27, followed by institute-level admissions to 14 September.
What is the difference between freeze and betterment?
Freeze makes the seat final; Not Freeze/Betterment accepts it and keeps you in later rounds for a better preference.
Is my first preference auto-frozen?
Yes, in Round I. In Round II the first 3 and in Round III the first 6 preferences auto-freeze.
What is the CAP seat-acceptance fee in 2026?
The final notice (No. 5, 10 September 2026) says ₹1,000 for all candidates, paid at first acceptance only; a July notice had set ₹1,000/₹2,000/₹3,000 per allotment.
How many options can I fill in CAP?
Up to 300.
What does GOPENS mean?
General, Open category, State Level seat.
What is a Home University seat?
A seat at a non-autonomous institute reserved for candidates of that university’s districts (70%).
Who can get TFWS?
Maharashtra candidates with family income below ₹8 lakh; tuition is waived and the seat cannot be changed later.
What was the last date for engineering admission in Maharashtra 2026?
14 September 2026, 5 pm.
How many engineering seats were vacant in Maharashtra in 2025-26?
36,091 of 2,03,160 (CAP summary).
