Checked 25 September 2026. From BEK nr. 452 af 13/05/2024, SIRI’s complaints and special-aids pages, and the participant information. No official source states an expiry date for a pass or a limit on retakes.
This guide covers everything around the test itself: how long the result takes, what the certificate shows and what you do with it, what happens if you fail, how to complain, and the special conditions — extra time, a helper, technical aids — that a candidate with dyslexia or another disability can apply for. Every rule is taken from the regulation that governs Medborgerskabsprøven, BEK 452/2024, and SIRI’s own pages, and the two questions no official source answers are stated plainly.

The result
It can take up to four weeks before you hear. The procedure is set by the regulation: after the test the centre sends copies of the answer sheets to the censor appointed for the sitting, the censor returns the marked papers within seven working days, and the centre then tells you the result “as quickly as possible”. How the centre tells you is up to the centre; one large provider says it sends the result by e-mail and the certificate can be collected about a week later. Meanwhile SIRI publishes the paper and answer key after the test — in June 2026 on the test day itself — so you can check your answers from memory.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| After the test | Paper and key published by SIRI (on the test day in June 2026) |
| Days after | Centre sends copies to the censor |
| Within 7 working days of receipt | Censor returns the marked papers |
| Up to about 4 weeks after the test | Centre tells you the result |
| After that | You collect the certificate in person with photo ID |
BEK 452/2024 §§20, 30, 40–42; SIRI; participant information.
The certificate
If you pass, the head of the centre issues a certificate (prøvebevis) (BEK §§40–43) showing your name, CPR number, the term (month and year), the centre and the head’s signature. It says nothing about any special conditions or aids you were given. You collect it in person with valid photo ID; only in special cases is it sent by registered post. There is one original; if you lose it, the centre can issue a certified copy. It is your job to send the certificate with your application for permanent residence — the centre does not forward it.
Does a pass expire? No official source states an expiry date. The only stated limit is historical: a Medborgerskabsprøve passed before 2016, under the earlier test of the same name, does not count. We found nothing that limits a pass of the present test in time.
If you fail
You can sit again at the next term — the next May–June or November–December sitting — and you register and pay a new fee (946 kr. in 2026). No official source limits the number of attempts. Before retaking, compare your answers with SIRI’s published key: a candidate at 17–19 usually needs a few weeks of targeted work on the fact sheets that cost them marks, while one below 15 should go back through the learning material from the start. Remember too that the test is one of four supplementary conditions for permanent residence, and one year of active citizenship can replace it — see our guide on the 2-of-4 rule.
Complaints
| About | Where | Deadline | Possible outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| The paper, the conduct of the test or your marking | SIRI | Within 4 weeks of the marking | Re-marking, a free re-test at the next term at the earliest, or rejection |
| A decision of the centre head (admission, aids, expulsion) | Lodged with the centre, which forwards it to SIRI | Within 2 weeks | SIRI decides |
BEK 452/2024 §§45–50; SIRI, Klagevejledning til Medborgerskabsprøven.
A complaint must be written, individual and reasoned — each candidate complains for themselves. Before writing one, ask the centre for a free copy of your own answer sheet (BEK §45(3)); the originals are kept for one year and released after the complaint deadline (§21). If SIRI upholds the complaint and offers a re-test, it is free.
Special conditions: dyslexia, blindness, disability
The test is normally taken with no aids at all. A candidate with a physical or mental impairment or a similar difficulty — the regulation names blind, deaf and dyslexic candidates as examples — can apply for practical measures and technical aids, a helper appointed by the centre (not your own teacher), or extra time. The arrangements may not lower the academic level or change how the answers are marked, and SIRI cannot dispense from the test’s form and content or from the pass rule.
| What you want | Apply to | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Extra time, a helper, practical measures or technical aids | The test centre | 4 weeks before the test — 28 October 2026 for the November sitting |
| Special conditions that could affect the academic level | SIRI, by secure post to vidensproever@siri.dk | 4 November 2026 (SIRI timetable) |
| A different ID document accepted | SIRI | 4 weeks before the test — 28 October 2026 |
BEK 452/2024 §§22–25 (helper, extra time, statements), §52 (no dispensation from form, content or marking); SIRI, Særlige hjælpemidler og vilkår ved Medborgerskabsprøven; SIRI 25 November 2026 timetable.
If the impairment is not obvious, you need a statement from a doctor, psychologist, vision consultant or other expert, no more than two years old. A statement about a permanent impairment such as dyslexia does not expire. SIRI’s web page mentions only the two-year limit, but the regulation and SIRI’s participant information both include the exception for permanent conditions, and the regulation governs. At least one provider asks you to register for the test before applying for special conditions, so do both early.

From certificate to permanent residence
The certificate is one document among several in a permanent-residence application. Nyidanmark.dk sets the 2026 application fee at 7,570 kr. for work and study cases and 4,970 kr. for family-reunification and asylum cases, and gives an expected maximum processing time of 12 months. A passed test only helps if it is your second (or fourth) supplementary condition and every basic condition — eight years’ residence, Prøve i Dansk 2, the work record, no benefits in four years, no overdue public debt — is met when you apply. Keep the original certificate safe: the centre issues only one, and a replacement is a certified copy. If your application is refused on another condition, the pass still stands: no official source limits how long it can be used, so it can go with a later application.
Who is exempt
The test itself has no “exemption” — because it is one of four optional supplementary conditions for permanent residence, most people who cannot take it simply meet two other conditions. The Aliens Act does contain routes where the supplementary conditions do not apply: young people applying at 18 before turning 19 who have been in education or full-time work since primary school; people with strong ties to Denmark; and cases where international obligations, including the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, require it. People at state pension age or on early retirement, senior or early pension need the basic conditions plus either the civic condition or Prøve i Dansk 3.

Practise it, don't just read it
If you are retaking, the fastest improvement comes from the fact sheets that cost you marks. The ProSyllabus topic quizzes are organised by fact sheet for exactly that.
The ProSyllabus library for Medborgerskabsprøven has a topic quiz for each of the 26 fact sheets, all 20 official papers from 2016 to June 2026 as timed quizzes, and ten full mock exams — the first quiz is free.
How long does it take to get the Medborgerskabsprøven result?
Up to four weeks.
Who tells me my result?
Your test centre.
What does the certificate show?
Your name, CPR number, the term, the centre and the head’s signature — never any special conditions.
Do I have to send the certificate myself?
Yes, with your permanent residence application.
Does a pass expire?
No official source states an expiry. Only passes of the pre-2016 test do not count.
Can I retake Medborgerskabsprøven?
Yes, at the next sitting, with a new fee. No limit on attempts was found.
How do I complain about my result?
Write to SIRI within four weeks of the marking, individually and with reasons.
Can I see my answer sheet?
Yes — ask the centre for a free copy.
Can I get extra time for dyslexia?
Yes — apply to the test centre at least four weeks before the test with an expert statement.
Does my dyslexia statement need to be recent?
Statements must normally be at most two years old, but one about a permanent condition such as dyslexia does not expire.
Can SIRI lower the pass mark for me?
No. Special conditions change how you sit the test, not what passes.
What if I cannot take the test at all?
It is only one of four supplementary conditions; meet two others, or ask about the special routes in the Aliens Act.
