Checked 28 September 2026. From the BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure and its 2026 Physics shortlist and final list (counted; no names used), DRDO RAC Advt 156 and its GATE-2027 notice, ISRO ICRB 02/EMC-CEPO/2026, and the IGCAR, RRCAT and IPR 2026 pages. BARC cut-offs are reported by a third party from an RTI reply and are marked as such. Marks equivalents and percentages are our arithmetic. The 2027 cycles have not been advertised.
Search for “jobs through GATE Physics” and you will find long lists of PSUs with salary tables. We checked the advertisements. In the latest cycle, of the advertisements we reviewed, only two employers named GATE PH: the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), for its OCES training course that leads to a Scientific Officer post, and the DRDO, for Scientist ‘B’ posts in Physics, of which there were four. Three DAE research centres also take GATE PH for funded PhDs. The PSUs on those lists, and ISRO, did not include Physics in any GATE-based advertisement we could find. This guide sets out what each real route asks for, what it pays, how hard it is to get in, and when to act for the 2027 cycle.
BARC OCES-2026 brochure and lists; DRDO RAC Advt 156; ISRO ICRB 02/EMC-CEPO/2026.
Where other pages get this wrong
The GATE PH routes in the latest advertisements are BARC OCES (Physics discipline) and DRDO Scientist ‘B’ (Physics). ISRO’s GATE-based recruitment ICRB 02/EMC-CEPO/2026 takes only EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR scores, and no PSU advertisement we found names PH.
Commonly published instead: EduRev’s “GATE Physics exam job list with salary” (checked 28 Sep 2026) lists AAI, NTPC, IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, HPCL, BPCL and NHPC with salaries, and says “ISRO has also started shortlisting through GATE”. A Careers360 Q&A says BARC, ISRO and DRDO hire M.Sc. candidates through GATE.

The reason is simple once you see it. PSUs recruit engineers for plants and pipelines, so they list engineering papers. ISRO’s GATE route is for its engineering centres. Physics graduates are hired where research is the job: the atomic energy establishment and defence laboratories. That makes GATE PH a narrow door to a job, and a wider door to a PhD.
BARC OCES: the main job through GATE Physics
The Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Science Post-graduates (OCES) is a year of paid training at BARC. Those who complete it are appointed Scientific Officers in the Department of Atomic Energy. Physics trainees are trained at BARC Mumbai. The 2026 brochure is the latest, and it is explicit about who may apply in the Physics discipline.

BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 Information Brochure (pp. 5, 9–10, 13, 17, 41).
Two details matter for GATE takers. First, GATE is one of two screening routes, not the only one: you can also sit BARC’s own online exam, and either route leads to the same interview. Second, the GATE cut-off is fixed after the online exam, and BARC does not publish it. The shortlist for 2026 had 242 Physics names; the final list had 29, about 12% of those shortlisted, by our arithmetic. The lists do not say which route each candidate used.

What GATE score does BARC need?
BARC publishes no cut-off. The numbers that circulate come from a coaching site, gatexplore, which says it obtained them through an RTI reply. We cannot verify them, so read them as reported, not official. For Physics they put the GATE-score cut-off between 650 and 742 in 2020–2024.
Reported by gatexplore from an RTI reply. The same figures are in the table below.
| Year | Online exam cut-off (reported) | GATE-score cut-off (reported) | Interview cut-off (reported) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 153 | 719 | 750 |
| 2021 | 114.5 | 742 | 735 |
| 2022 | 153.5 | 729 | 740 |
| 2023 | 152 | 650 | 750 |
| 2024 | 166 | 717 | 760 |
Reported by gatexplore (“BARC Scientific Officer cut-off”), which says the figures come from an RTI reply. BARC’s own documents publish no cut-off.
What does a score of 650 to 742 mean in marks? Inverting the official score formula (our arithmetic), it is about 46.9 to 53.4 marks on the 2026 field, and 51.9 to 58.0 on the 2024 field, which was easier. In 2026 only 97 candidates who appeared scored 50 or more. So if these reported figures are right, the GATE route to BARC Physics means a rank somewhere between about 26 and 262 on the 2026 field, by the official score bands below. Remember that BARC takes your best score of three years, so a strong GATE 2026 score still counts for the 2027 and 2028 courses.
| Reported GATE score | Marks on the 2026 field (ours) | Marks on the 2024 field (ours) | 2026 rank band for that score (official) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 650 | 46.9 | 51.9 | 88–262 (600–700 band) |
| 742 | 53.4 | 58.0 | 26–83 (700–800 band) |
| For reference: 50 marks | score 694 | score 622 | 97 appeared candidates at 50 or more (ours) |
Score ↔ marks by the official formula with each year’s qualifying mark and top-candidates’ mean (our arithmetic); rank bands from the GATE 2026 statistical report; the count at 50 marks is summed by us from its marks distribution.
DRDO Scientist ‘B’ (Physics)
DRDO’s Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) hires Scientist ‘B’ through GATE. Its last advertisement, Advt 156, had 152 posts, and 4 of them were in Physics. Shortlisting was on the GATE PH score, and the final merit list weighs GATE heavily. On 31 Aug 2026 RAC told aspirants to take GATE 2027 for the next cycle, which has not been advertised yet.
| Rule (Advt 156) | Scientist ‘B’, Physics |
|---|---|
| Posts in Physics | 4 (UR 1, EWS 1, OBC 1, ST 1) of 152 in total |
| Qualification | At least a first-class Master’s in Science in Physics or a listed equivalent (Physics (Electronics), Applied, Solid State, Computational or Engineering Physics, Physics & Electronics, and others), and a valid GATE PH score (2023, 2024 or 2025) |
| Shortlisting | 1:10 on the GATE score |
| Final merit | 80% GATE score + 20% interview |
| Interview minimum | 70% (UR), 60% (others) |
| Upper age | UR/EWS 35, OBC 38, SC/ST 40 |
| Pay | Pay Level 10 (basic ₹56,100), about ₹1,00,000 a month |
DRDO RAC Advt 156 (closing date 4 Jul 2025) and RAC’s public notice on GATE 2027 (31 Aug 2026). DRDO published no Physics shortlist cut-off.
With four posts and a 1:10 shortlist, about 40 GATE PH candidates reach the DRDO interview in a cycle like Advt 156 (our arithmetic). Because merit is 80% GATE, your GATE score decides most of the outcome. Advt 156 advertised no second screening route, unlike BARC.
Paid research instead of a job: DAE PhD fellowships
For most GATE PH candidates the score is a PhD key, not a job ticket. Three DAE research centres accept a GATE PH score as one of three routes, alongside JEST and CSIR-NET, and pay fellowships from the first year.
| Institute | Accepts | Fellowship | 2026 timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| IGCAR Kalpakkam (JRF, HBNI PhD) | GATE, JEST or CSIR-NET JRF; otherwise a screening test | Direct PhD: ₹37,000 (years 1–2), ₹42,000 (years 3–5), contingency ₹60,000 a year. Integrated PhD: ₹25,000 in year 1 plus a ₹30,000 book allowance | Screening test 2 Aug 2026; interviews from the third week of August |
| RRCAT Indore (PhD) | JEST, GATE or CSIR-UGC NET JRF, 2024–2026; M.Sc./M.Tech. with 60%, or a 4-year BS/B.Sc. in Physics with 60% | DAE norms | Apply 1–20 May (extended to 26 May); online interviews 10–18 Jun; result 5 Jul; classes 1 Aug 2026 |
| IPR Gandhinagar (PhD) | JEST, GATE or CSIR-UGC NET; shortlisting on GATE score or NET rank | ₹37,000 + HRA (years 1–2), ₹42,000 + HRA (year 3 on); contingency ₹60,000 a year | Notification in April; interviews in June; joining 1 Aug |

Check your eligibility
Which GATE-PH routes are open to you? An eligibility check
Pick your degree and enter your marks and age. The check applies the rules printed in BARC’s OCES-2026 brochure and DRDO’s Advt 156, the latest documents available. The 2027 cycles may change them, so treat a “yes” as a reason to read the next advertisement, not as a guarantee.
BARC age limits are on 1 August of the course year (26 / 29 / 31, plus 10 for PwD). DRDO’s are 35 / 38 / 40 on the closing date; DRDO’s PwD relaxation is in the advertisement and is not applied here. The B.Sc. mark matters only for a two-year M.Sc. Every number used is in the eligibility table below.
| Route | Degree | Marks | Upper age (Gen / OBC / SC-ST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| BARC OCES, Physics (2026 rules) | M.Sc./Int. M.Sc. Physics, or B.E./B.Tech./Int. M.Tech. Engineering Physics | 60% (and 60% in the B.Sc. for a two-year M.Sc.) | 26 / 29 / 31 on 1 Aug; PwD +10 |
| DRDO Scientist ‘B’, Physics (Advt 156) | Master’s in Science in Physics or a listed equivalent subject | First class | 35 / 38 / 40 |
| RRCAT PhD (2026) | M.Sc./M.Tech. (Physics etc.) or 4-year BS/B.Sc. Physics | 60% | as advertised |
| IGCAR JRF (2026) | Master’s; integrated M.Sc. accepted | 55% for integrated M.Sc. | as advertised |

Timing for 2027
If BARC keeps the 2026 pattern, the OCES-2027 advertisement would appear around December 2026 and ask for a GATE score from 2025, 2026 or 2027, with a score-upload window in late March. GATE 2027 results are due on 19 March 2027, which would fit. That is our reading of the 2026 calendar; the OCES-2027 brochure has not been published. For DRDO, RAC has advised aspirants to take GATE 2027; which score years the next Scientist ‘B’ advertisement will accept has not been announced. Either way, the practical advice is the same: register for GATE 2027 before 5 October 2026 (12 October with the late fee) and aim for the 50-mark range if BARC is the goal.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 5 Oct 2026 | GATE 2027 regular registration closes (12 Oct with late fee) |
| about Dec 2026 (our reading) | OCES-2027 advertisement, if BARC follows the 2026 calendar |
| 6–21 Feb 2027 | GATE 2027 exam window (PH date not yet published) |
| 19 Mar 2027 | GATE 2027 results |
| late Mar 2027 (our reading) | BARC GATE-score upload, if the 2026 pattern holds |

Practise it, don't just read it
For BARC’s interview and for DRDO’s GATE-heavy merit list, depth in the core matters more than breadth. Our Nuclear and Particle Physics and Electronics section quizzes are a quick check on two of the core sections.
The ProSyllabus GATE Physics library has eight quizzes today: four topic quizzes (Simple Harmonic Oscillator Dynamics, Gauss’s Law Applications, the Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy) and four section quizzes (Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics), each with a worked explanation for every option. There are no quizzes yet for Mathematical Physics, Thermodynamics, Optical Physics or Measurements; use the official papers for those.
Which jobs can I get through GATE Physics?
In the latest advertisements we reviewed, BARC’s OCES Scientific Officer course (Physics discipline) and DRDO Scientist ‘B’ (Physics, 4 posts in Advt 156) named GATE PH. IGCAR, RRCAT and IPR accept GATE PH for funded PhDs.
Does ISRO recruit through GATE Physics?
Not in its latest GATE-based advertisement. ISRO ICRB 02/EMC-CEPO/2026 accepted only EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR scores.
Do PSUs like NTPC, IOCL or ONGC hire through GATE PH?
We found no PSU advertisement that names the PH paper. PSUs recruit through engineering GATE papers.
What is the BARC cut-off for GATE Physics?
BARC does not publish one. A coaching site reports GATE-score cut-offs of 650 to 742 for 2020–2024 from an RTI reply, which is about 47 to 53 marks on the 2026 field by our arithmetic.
What is the salary of a BARC Scientific Officer through OCES?
The training stipend is ₹74,000 a month plus a ₹30,000 book allowance. On absorption the post is Scientific Officer (C), Pay Level 10, basic ₹56,100, about ₹1,34,000 a month by the brochure’s estimate.
Can I apply to BARC with an M.Sc. in Medical Physics or Nanotechnology?
Not in the Physics discipline. The OCES-2026 brochure lists M.Sc. Nano, Medical and Chemical Physics, Astronomy and Geophysics as ineligible.
How many GATE PH scores does BARC accept?
For OCES-2026, the best of GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026. GATE is one of two screening routes; the other is BARC’s own online exam.
