Checked 28 September 2026. Marks targets come from the official GATE PH statistical reports (2023–2026) through the official score formula; section averages from our classification of the official 2023–2026 keys on the 2027 section headings; the drop and add lists from comparing the official 2026 and 2027 PH syllabi. The time split and the monthly phases are our plan, not an official recommendation. The PH exam date within 6–21 Feb 2027 is not yet published.
Most GATE Physics study plans are lists of books. This one starts from numbers you can check: how many marks it took to qualify, to reach a rank in the hundreds, or to reach the band BARC is reported to use; how many marks each section carried across the four latest papers; and exactly which topics the 2027 syllabus drops and adds. From that it builds a plan for the roughly nineteen weeks between now and the February 2027 window, with a planner that splits your own weekly hours.
GATE 2026 statistical report; score and averages are our arithmetic from official data.
Set a marks target first
GATE PH marks have fallen. The General qualifying mark fell from 32 in 2024 to 25.5 in 2026, and the number of candidates at 50 marks or more fell from 258 to 97. So set your target in marks on the 2026 scale, the lowest-scoring recent field. Qualifying took 25.5 marks. 40 marks gave a score of about 554; 449 candidates who appeared scored 40 or more. 50 marks gave about 694, a top-100 performance. 60 marks gave about 834; only 22 reached it. The GATE-score cut-offs a coaching site reports for BARC in 2020–2024, 650 to 742 (not official; the year-by-year values are in our jobs guide), work out at about 46.9 to 53.4 marks on the same field.
| Goal | Marks, 2026 field | Score (ours) | Appeared at or above (official, summed by us) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualify (General) | 25.5 | 350 | 5,060 at 20 or more; 1,684 at 30 or more |
| A CCMT PH-only M.Tech seat (NIT Rourkela, OPEN 2026) | 30.5 | 420 | 1,684 at 30 or more |
| A rank in the hundreds | 40 | 554 | 449 |
| The BARC GATE-score cut-offs reported for 2020–2024 (not official) | 46.9–53.4 | 650–742 | between 449 (40+) and 97 (50+) |
| Top 100 | 50 | 694 | 97 |
| Top 25 | 60 | 834 | 22 |

Where the marks are: three tiers
We sorted every Physics question of the 2023–2026 papers into the eleven sections of the 2027 syllabus. Four sections averaged ten marks or more: Quantum Mechanics (12.5), Nuclear and Particle Physics (10.75), Electromagnetic Theory (10.25) and Classical Mechanics (10.0). Three sat just below: Mathematical Physics and Solid State (9.5 each) and Thermodynamics (9.0). Atomic Physics and Electronics averaged 5.75. Optical Physics averaged only 1.75 under the old syllabus, and Measurements 0.25, but both are full sections in 2027, so their weight in the next paper is unknown.
| Tier | Sections (average marks, 2023–2026) |
|---|---|
| Top | Quantum Mechanics 12.5; Nuclear & Particle 10.75; EMT 10.25; Classical Mechanics 10.0 |
| Middle | Mathematical Physics 9.5; Solid State 9.5; Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics 9.0 |
| Lower | Atomic & Molecular 5.75; Electronics 5.75 |
| Unknown (new weight in 2027) | Optical Physics 1.75; Measurements & Error Analysis 0.25 |
Our classification of the official PH answer keys 2023–2026 on the 2027 section headings; the averages add to 85.
Split your hours
| Part | Share of study time (our split) | Average marks it carried, 2023–2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Quantum Mechanics | 12% | 12.5 |
| Nuclear & Particle Physics | 10% | 10.75 |
| Electromagnetic Theory | 10% | 10.25 |
| Classical Mechanics | 10% | 10.0 |
| Mathematical Physics | 9% | 9.5 |
| Solid State Physics | 9% | 9.5 |
| Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics | 9% | 9.0 |
| Atomic & Molecular Physics | 5% | 5.75 |
| Electronics | 5% | 5.75 |
| Optical Physics | 4% | 1.75 (a full section from 2027) |
| Measurements & Error Analysis | 2% | 0.25 (new in 2027) |
| General Aptitude | 15% | 15 (fixed) |
Our split: roughly in proportion to the four-year averages, with 4% and 2% set aside for the two sections that are new or expanded in 2027. If General Aptitude comes easily to you, move up to 5% of your time from it to Quantum Mechanics and EMT.

What to drop and what to add for 2027
The 2027 PH syllabus is not the 2026 one with a new heading or two. It removes a set of advanced topics and adds a set of practical ones. If you are working from a coaching module written for 2026 or earlier, cross these off and add the others.
| Change | Topics (official 2026 vs 2027 PH syllabi) |
|---|---|
| Dropped | Liouville’s theorem; action-angle variables; Hamilton–Jacobi theory; WKB approximation; Dirac notation as a named topic; tight binding; Kramers–Kronig relations; optical properties of solids; inter- and intra-band transitions; EPR; nuclear radii and charge distributions; radiation from a moving charge; special functions; Laplace transforms |
| Added: measurements | units and dimensions, dimensional analysis; least count, error analysis and significant figures; two- and four-probe resistance measurement; grounding and ground loops; DC power-supply design; lock-in amplifiers |
| Added: optics | spatial and temporal coherence; Jones calculus; ray-transfer matrices; Fabry–Pérot and Michelson interferometers; Rayleigh criterion; grating dispersion |
| Added: quantum | delta potentials; degeneracy of the 2-D and 3-D box and oscillator; central potentials |
| Added: atomic and electronics | Paschen–Back effect; basics of Raman spectroscopy (the Raman effect itself was already listed); Mössbauer spectroscopy; waveform generators; op-amp applications. Metal–semiconductor contacts are not new: they moved from Electronics to Solid State |

Month by month
| Month | Focus | Why |
|---|---|---|
| October | Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Physics | the largest section, and the tools every other section uses (residues and tensors were asked in every recent paper) |
| November | Classical Mechanics, EMT, Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics | three sections worth about 29 marks together on average |
| December | Nuclear & Particle, Solid State, Atomic, Electronics; TIFR GS on 13 Dec as a full mock | about 32 marks together; GS is a three-hour physics paper two months out |
| January | Optical Physics, Measurements, then full past papers 2022–2026 | the two sections that grew in 2027, then timed practice |
| February | Past papers again, the repeat list, formula revision | the 6–21 Feb window; check the PH date as soon as it is published |
Our plan. Section averages from our classification of the official keys; TIFR GS date from TIFR; GATE window from the GATE 2027 dates page.
The October start with Quantum Mechanics and Mathematical Physics is deliberate. Quantum is the biggest section, and Mathematical Physics is the toolkit for the rest: residues, tensors, Fourier methods and linear algebra turn up inside EMT, Classical Mechanics and Statistical Mechanics questions. In December, sit TIFR’s GS on 13 December if you registered by 25 October; even if you do not want TIFR, a three-hour physics paper under exam conditions is the best mid-point check you will get.
Practise the repeats first
Within each section, some topics come back year after year. Our tagging of 2023–2026 found residues in Mathematical Physics and logic circuits in Electronics in every paper, and spin addition, relativistic kinematics, the rigid body, magnetised spheres, superconductivity, particle-reaction conservation laws, beta decay and op-amps in at least three. None of these is touched by the 2027 cuts.
| Topic | Section | Asked |
|---|---|---|
| Residues and poles | Mathematical Physics | every year, 2023–2026 |
| Logic circuits | Electronics | every year, 2023–2026 |
| Tensors | Mathematical Physics | 2023, 2024, 2025, 2026 |
| Magnetised or polarised sphere and cylinder | EMT | 2023, 2024, 2025 (twice), 2026 |
| Spin addition | Quantum Mechanics | 2023, 2025, 2026 |
| Relativistic kinematics | Classical Mechanics | 2023 (three), 2024 (two), 2026 |
| Rigid body and symmetric top | Classical Mechanics | 2023, 2025, 2026 (two) |
| Superconductivity and the Meissner effect | Solid State | 2024, 2025, 2026 |
| Conservation laws in particle reactions | Nuclear & Particle | 2024 (two), 2026 (two) |
| Beta decay | Nuclear & Particle | 2024, 2025 (two) |
| Op-amp circuits | Electronics | 2024, 2025, 2026 |

Question types: where marks are won and lost
Only MCQs carry negative marks. Across 2022–2026 the MCQ share of the 85 Physics marks ranged from 31 to 55, so between 30 and 54 marks each year came from MSQs and NATs with no negatives. NATs alone carried 17 to 26 marks. Two habits pay. First, do not assume an MSQ has two or more answers: in four of the last five papers at least one MSQ had exactly one correct option, and a second tick scores zero for the question. Second, always attempt NATs: a wrong NAT scores zero but cannot cost marks.
| Year | MCQ marks (negatives) | MSQ marks | NAT marks | MSQs with one correct option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 31 | 33 | 21 | 1 |
| 2023 | 55 | 13 | 17 | 2 |
| 2024 | 33 | 32 | 20 | 0 |
| 2025 | 35 | 30 | 20 | 3 |
| 2026 | 41 | 18 | 26 | 1 |

Should you guess? The negative-marking calculator
Pick the question type and how many of the four options you can confidently rule out. The calculator shows your expected marks from answering versus leaving it blank.
The calculator makes the MCQ rule concrete. On a one-mark MCQ the penalty is a third of a mark, so a blind guess among four options breaks even at best; rule out one option and guessing starts to pay. On MSQs and NATs a wrong answer scores zero but carries no negative mark.

Practise it, don't just read it
Use our quizzes to test a section after you finish it: the Nuclear and Particle Physics, Solid State Physics, Atomic and Molecular Physics and Electronics section quizzes fit the December block, and the Schrödinger Equation and Perturbation Theory quizzes the October one.
The ProSyllabus GATE Physics library has eight quizzes today: four topic quizzes (Simple Harmonic Oscillator Dynamics, Gauss’s Law Applications, the Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy) and four section quizzes (Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics), each with a worked explanation for every option. There are no quizzes yet for Mathematical Physics, Thermodynamics, Optical Physics or Measurements; use the official papers for those.
How many marks do I need to qualify GATE Physics?
The General qualifying mark was 25.5 in 2026, 26.8 in 2025, 32 in 2024 and 31.1 in 2023. Aim above 30 to be safe if marks fall again.
What marks are needed for a good rank in GATE PH?
On the 2026 field, 40 marks gave a score of about 554 and 449 candidates scored 40 or more; 50 marks gave about 694 and only 97 reached it.
Which sections of GATE Physics carry the most marks?
By our classification of 2023–2026: Quantum Mechanics (12.5 on average), Nuclear and Particle Physics (10.75), EMT (10.25) and Classical Mechanics (10.0).
What was removed from the GATE Physics 2027 syllabus?
Among others: Liouville’s theorem, action-angle variables, Hamilton–Jacobi theory, WKB, tight binding, Kramers–Kronig relations, optical properties of solids, EPR, nuclear radii, radiation from a moving charge, special functions and Laplace transforms.
Is there negative marking for MSQ and NAT in GATE Physics?
No. Only MCQs carry negative marks, one third of the question’s marks. MSQs and NATs have no negatives, but an MSQ gives no partial credit.
When is the GATE Physics 2027 exam?
GATE 2027 runs from 6 to 21 February 2027. The PH date and session had not been published on 28 September 2026. Results are due on 19 March 2027.
Is it too late to start preparing in October?
The plan above starts in October and fits about nineteen weeks. The planner splits whatever weekly hours you have across the sections by their weight.
