Checked 28 September 2026. From the official GATE 2027 PH syllabus (IIT Madras, PDF of 6 Jul 2026), the GATE 2026 PH syllabus (IIT Guwahati), the GATE 2027 brochure and the official PH papers and keys 2023–2026. The phrase-by-phrase comparison, the word counts and the question mapping are ours.
The GATE 2027 Physics syllabus is a substantial rewrite of the PH paper, not a tidy-up. IIT Madras has turned nine sections into eleven. Two sections are new: Measurements and Error Analysis, which brings lab skills such as lock-in amplifiers and four-probe measurement into the written paper, and Optical Physics, which gathers interference, diffraction, polarisation and lasers. At the same time a list of classic advanced topics has gone: Liouville’s theorem, action-angle variables, the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, WKB, Dirac notation as a topic, tight binding, Kramers-Kronig and the optical properties of solids. This guide sets out every change and then checks it against the four latest papers. Some “new” topics were already being asked, and some “removed” ones were asked as recently as 2026.
GATE 2026 and 2027 PH syllabi and the GATE 2027 brochure. The counts are ours.

Where other pages get this wrong
The official GATE 2027 PH syllabus is on the IIT Madras site as a PDF created on 6 July 2026. It has 11 sections, including Optical Physics and Measurements and Error Analysis, and it no longer lists Liouville’s theorem, WKB or the tight-binding approximation.
Commonly published instead: Careers360’s “GATE Physics syllabus” page (checked 28 Sep 2026) is headed “Syllabus 2027 Out” but still prints Liouville, WKB and tight binding, with no Optical Physics or Measurements section. Collegedunia’s page (updated 24 Jul 2026) says the 2027 PDF “is not live yet” and tells readers to use the 2026 syllabus.

The paper in 2027
The shape of the paper does not change. GATE PH is one of the papers with no Engineering Mathematics section: the mathematics sits inside the 85 Physics marks as the Mathematical Physics section. General Aptitude adds 15 marks, for 100 marks in three hours. PH was a single-session paper in 2023–2026, so raw marks were used for the score, with no normalisation. The 2027 brochure says some papers may run in more than one session and has not yet said which.
| Part | Questions | Marks | Question types |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 10 | 15 | MCQ (and occasionally MSQ) |
| Physics (sections 1–11) | 55 | 85 | MCQ, MSQ and NAT |
| Total | 65 | 100, in three hours | Negative marks on MCQs only |
GATE 2027 Information Brochure. A wrong MCQ costs 1/3 of a mark (one-mark questions) or 2/3 (two-mark questions). MSQ and NAT have no negative marking and no partial credit.
If you want to write two papers in 2027, PH pairs with CS, DA, EC, EE, MA or XE, both ways round, the same list as in 2026. EC and EE share the Electronics section and some of the Electromagnetic Theory; MA shares the Mathematical Physics. The brochure marks the combination list tentative and subject to change. A second paper costs a second fee and needs its own session, so check the timetable when it is published.
Nine sections became eleven
The two new sections are numbered first and sixth, and the rest have been renumbered around them. The order in the syllabus does not predict the order in the paper; it is only how IIT Madras has grouped the content.
| 2026 section (IIT Guwahati) | 2027 section (IIT Madras) |

What changed in each section
We compared the two PDFs phrase by phrase. The 2027 text is about 100 words longer, but the additions are not spread evenly: two sections are entirely new, Quantum Mechanics and Solid State Physics changed the most, and Thermodynamics and Nuclear Physics barely moved.
| Section (2027) | Removed or narrowed | Added or reworded |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Measurements & Error Analysis | — | Whole section new: units and dimensions, least count, significant figures, error analysis; 2-probe and 4-probe resistance; grounding and ground loops; DC power-supply design; lock-in amplifiers |
| 2 Mathematical Physics | Special functions; Laplace transform; the “Vector Calculus” heading | Tensor transformations; linear differential equations with simple first- and second-order applications |
| 3 Classical Mechanics | Liouville’s theorem; action-angle variables; Hamilton-Jacobi equation; Rutherford scattering (still in Nuclear) | Poisson brackets, symmetric top and special relativity stay |
| 4 Thermodynamics & Statistical Mechanics | “Critical point” | “Critical phenomena”; section renamed from Statistical Physics |
| 5 Electromagnetic Theory | Radiation from a moving charge | — |
| 6 Optical Physics | — | Whole section new: waves, interference (Michelson, Fabry-Perot, Newton’s rings), diffraction (Fresnel, Fraunhofer, Rayleigh criterion, gratings), polarisation with Jones vectors and matrices, ray-transfer matrices, and lasers moved in from Atomic |
| 7 Quantum Mechanics | Dirac bra-ket notation; WKB; symmetries in quantum systems; “Postulates” heading | Particle in 1-, 2- and 3-D boxes; single and double delta potentials; 1-, 2- and 3-D oscillator with degeneracy; central potentials; hydrogen-like atoms |
| 8 Atomic & Molecular Physics | EPR (ESR kept); lasers (moved) | Paschen-Back effect; basics of Raman spectroscopy; Mössbauer spectroscopy |
| 9 Solid State Physics | Tight binding; optical properties of solids; Kramers-Kronig; intra- and inter-band transitions; dielectric function; magnetic anisotropy | Moved in from Electronics: electron and hole statistics, metal-semiconductor junctions, ohmic and rectifying contacts |
| 10 Nuclear & Particle Physics | Nuclear radii and charge distributions | — |
| 11 Electronics | The semiconductor-statistics block (moved to Solid State) | Operational amplifiers and their applications; waveform generators (sine, square, triangular) |
GATE 2026 and 2027 PH syllabi; the comparison is ours.
The pattern in the removals is clear. Nearly everything that went is the kind of topic that belongs to an M.Sc. elective or a theory course: canonical-transformation machinery in mechanics, semiclassical methods in quantum mechanics, and the optical response of solids. What came in is either experimental (errors, measurement, lock-in detection, power supplies, grounding) or standard problems that every textbook solves (boxes, delta wells, the 3-D oscillator, central potentials). Our reading is that the 2027 paper is meant to reward a solid M.Sc. core and some laboratory sense, rather than coverage of rarely taught topics.
Search any topic
Is this topic still in GATE Physics 2027?
Type part of a topic name (for example WKB, Raman, lock-in or tight). The tool searches the 50 topics that changed or that the papers keep asking, and tells you whether each is new, removed, moved, reworded or kept.
Our phrase-by-phrase comparison of the official 2026 (IIT Guwahati) and 2027 (IIT Madras) PH syllabi. The table below lists the same 50 topics. A topic that is not listed has not changed wording; check the 2027 PDF for it.

Removed, but asked in the last four papers
Removal from the syllabus is a firm signal, but it helps to know what you are giving up. Four of the removed topics were examined between 2023 and 2026, three of them in the most recent paper (one of those three, self-adjoint operators, is a borderline case). If you already know these topics, you do not need to forget them: several are useful background for topics that stayed. But do not spend new hours on them.
| Removed topic | Last asked | What stays nearby |
|---|---|---|
| Liouville’s theorem | 2024 Q23 | Hamiltonian formalism and Poisson brackets |
| Tight-binding approximation | 2026 Q32 (effective mass from a tight-binding dispersion) | Bloch theorem, band structure and effective mass |
| Special functions (borderline: the question was on self-adjoint differential operators) | 2026 Q50 | Linear differential equations; operators in Hilbert space stay under Quantum Mechanics |
| Intra- and inter-band transitions | 2026 Q54 (direct and indirect band gaps) | Semiconductors, now with carrier statistics in Solid State |
Official PH papers and final keys 2023–2026; the mapping to syllabus phrases is ours.
New, but already asked
The additions are less new than they look. Five of the newly named or reworded topics had already turned up in 2023–2026, four of them in the 2026 paper, which tells you how the setters treat the syllabus: as a description of the course, not a closed list.
| Newly named in 2027 | Already asked | Section in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| 3-D harmonic oscillator with degeneracy | 2026 Q41 (2 marks) | Quantum Mechanics |
| Op-amp applications (waveform generators are named alongside) | 2026 Q43 (an ideal op-amp turning a sine input into a square wave, 2 marks) | Electronics |
| Lasers under Optical Physics | 2026 Q58 (stimulated emission in a two-level system, NAT) | Optical Physics |
| Basics of Raman spectroscopy | 2026 Q34 (Stokes and anti-Stokes lines, NAT) | Atomic and Molecular Physics |
| Tensor transformations | Tensor questions in 2023 Q17, 2024 Q51, 2025 Q50, 2026 Q21 (a tensor product) | Mathematical Physics |
Official PH papers and final keys 2023–2026; the classification is ours.
Rutherford scattering deserves a separate note. It has been taken out of Classical Mechanics, which some pages report as “Rutherford scattering removed”. It has not been removed: it is still named under Nuclear and Particle Physics, and it was asked in 2026 (Q56). 2025 Q41 used it only as the setting for a logic-gate question.
How much the changed sections are worth
The two new sections are the real unknowns. On our tagging of 2023–2026, questions that fit today’s Measurements heading carried 1 mark across the four papers (in 2023 only), and questions that fit today’s Optical Physics heading carried 0–4 marks a year. Now that each is a full section, we would expect more, but nobody outside the paper-setting team knows how much. Plan for a few marks from each and do not over-invest.
Our classification of the official 2023–2026 PH papers and final keys on the 2027 section headings.

| 5 / 7 | 3 / 5 | 3 / 6 | 11 Electronics | 4 / 5 | 5.75 |
Our classification of every Physics question in the official papers 2023–2026. Each year totals 55 questions and 85 marks.
Two things follow. First, the big sections barely changed in weight terms: Quantum Mechanics (12.5 marks on average), Nuclear (10.75), Electromagnetic Theory (10.25) and Classical Mechanics (10.0) still carry the paper. Second, Solid State Physics lost several topics and has already been shrinking in the papers, from 12 marks in 2023 and 2024 to 8 in 2025 and 6 in 2026. Our section-wise weightage guide goes through these numbers in detail.

Our Solid State Physics quiz was written before the 2027 syllabus, so a few of its questions touch topics that are now out, such as Kramers-Kronig and optical absorption. Treat those as background and focus on the rest. The Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension quiz fits the expanded 2027 Quantum Mechanics section well.
The ProSyllabus GATE Physics library has eight quizzes today: four topic quizzes (Simple Harmonic Oscillator Dynamics, Gauss’s Law Applications, the Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy) and four section quizzes (Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics), each with a worked explanation for every option. There are no quizzes yet for Mathematical Physics, Thermodynamics, Optical Physics or Measurements; use the official papers for those.
