Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2027 brochure and dates page, the JEST 2026 site, the CSIR-UGC NET June 2026 bulletin and NTA notices, TIFR GS 2027 admissions, the JAM 2027 brochure, and NIC’s CCMT 2025 and 2026 opening and closing scores. JEST 2027 and the next NET cycle have not been announced. CCMT closing scores are pooled across all GATE papers a group admits unless marked PH-only. Marks equivalents are our arithmetic.
A physics graduate in India who wants a PhD has five entrance exams to think about, and they do not open the same doors. GATE PH is the broad key: M.Tech through CCMT, PhDs at several institutes, and the only one that BARC’s and DRDO’s latest Physics recruitment adverts accepted. JEST is the research-institute exam, with 31 participating institutes including IISc, TIFR and the IISERs. CSIR-NET is the fellowship exam: pass it at JRF level and you hold a fellowship you can take to an eligible institute that admits you. TIFR’s GS is TIFR’s own. And JAM is for an IIT M.Sc. and the joint and integrated PhD programmes that start after a B.Sc. This guide lays them side by side and then answers the question GATE PH takers ask most: what does my score actually get me?

Where other pages get this wrong
An IIT M.Sc. in Physics, and the joint M.Sc.–PhD, dual-degree and integrated PhD programmes that JAM lists, are admitted through JAM, not GATE. GATE PH mostly serves graduates going to an M.Tech, a PhD or a job, though you may sit it from the third year of a bachelor’s degree.
Commonly published instead: Pages that list “IIT M.Sc.” among the uses of a GATE Physics score, and B.Sc. students told that GATE is the way into an IIT.
JAM 2027 brochure (pp. 3, 11); GATE 2027 brochure (eligibility and uses of the score).
The practical point in that table is shelf life. A GATE score lasts three years. A JEST score lasts until the next-but-one JEST result. A NET JRF must be taken up within two years. A TIFR GS result lasts one admission cycle. If you are applying across two years, GATE and JEST carry you through; TIFR must be sat again.

What each exam is like
GATE PH is 100 marks in three hours: 15 of General Aptitude and 85 of Physics, with one-third negatives on MCQs only. CSIR-NET Physical Sciences is also three hours but in three parts: you answer 15 questions of Part A, 20 of Part B and 20 of Part C, with a 25% negative in all three parts: 0.5, 0.875 and 1.25 marks for a wrong answer, against 2, 3.5 and 5 for a right one, 200 marks in all. Its JRF has an age limit of 30 (on 1 July 2026 for the June cycle); there is none for Assistant Professor or PhD-only qualification. JEST changed its question pattern for 2026; read the new pattern on its site before you practise from old papers. TIFR GS is a three-hour Physics paper in the afternoon.
| Feature | GATE PH | CSIR-NET Physical Sciences |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 3 hours | 3 hours |

Fellowships: who pays you
A PhD place and the money that comes with it are two different things. A CSIR-NET JRF is a fellowship you hold yourself, usable at an eligible institute that admits you, under CSIR/UGC and host rules: ₹37,000 a month for two years, then ₹42,000 as an SRF, with ₹20,000 a year contingency. A GATE or JEST score gets you into an institute, which then pays you from its own or a scheme’s funds. At the DAE centres that take GATE PH, the monthly rates for a direct PhD match NET’s: IGCAR and IPR pay ₹37,000 in years one and two and ₹42,000 after, with ₹60,000 a year contingency, and IPR adds HRA. An IGCAR integrated PhD starts lower, at ₹25,000 in year one.
| Scheme | Monthly | Contingency |
|---|---|---|
| CSIR-NET JRF → SRF | ₹37,000 (2 years), then ₹42,000 | ₹20,000 a year |
| IGCAR direct PhD (GATE, JEST or NET) | ₹37,000 (years 1–2), ₹42,000 (years 3–5) | ₹60,000 a year, book allowance included |
| IGCAR integrated PhD | ₹25,000 in year 1 plus a one-time ₹30,000 book allowance; ₹37,000 (years 2–3); ₹42,000 after | ₹60,000 a year from year 2 |
| IPR PhD (GATE, JEST or NET) | ₹37,000 + HRA (years 1–2), ₹42,000 + HRA (year 3 on) | ₹60,000 a year |

Where JEST takes you that GATE may not
JEST is run for the research institutes, and its site lists 31 participating institutes, among them IISc, TIFR, ICTS, NCRA, IUCAA, seven IISERs, NISER, IMSc, HRI, IOP, RRI, SINP, PRL, IGCAR, RRCAT, IPR, HBNI, IIST, the S.N. Bose Centre, Bose Institute, IIA, ARIES, VECC and the UGC-DAE Consortium. ANRF (formerly SERB) recognises it as a NET. There is no eligibility condition to sit JEST; each institute sets its own. A PhD needs an M.Sc. in Physics, but a B.E. or B.Tech. is accepted at IISc, IMSc, ICTS, IUCAA, NCRA, TCIS, RRI and IISER Mohali, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram, and NISER’s integrated PhD takes a first-class B.Sc. Physics or B.E. Engineering Physics.
| JEST rule | What it says |
|---|---|
| Participating institutes | 31, including IISc, TIFR, ICTS, NCRA, IUCAA, seven IISERs, NISER, IMSc, HRI, IOP, RRI, SINP, PRL, IGCAR, RRCAT, IPR, HBNI, IIST, VECC |
| Eligibility to sit | none; each institute sets its own |
| B.E./B.Tech. accepted for PhD at | IISc, IMSc, ICTS, IUCAA, NCRA, TCIS, RRI, IISER Mohali, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram |
| NISER integrated PhD | first-class B.Sc. Physics or B.E. Engineering Physics |
| Recognition | ANRF (SERB) recognises JEST as a NET |

Where other pages get this wrong
TIFR admits to Physics through its own GS exam and a published JEST-score route. TIFR runs a “GATE/JEST/CSIR/Other exams” admission channel, but we found no published GATE route for Physics; its eligibility table decides, programme by programme.
Commonly published instead: Pages that list TIFR among institutes that admit Physics PhD students on a GATE PH score.
TIFR GS 2027 admissions pages (GS on 13 Dec 2026; the JEST-2026 route for TIFR Mumbai and NCRA Physics). TIFR’s full eligibility table was not reachable, so this is “not found”, not “ruled out”. Check the table before you rely on a GATE score for TIFR.
Deadlines, with days left
Physics entrance deadlines: days left from today
The next dates that decide a physics PhD or M.Tech place, counted from today’s date on your device. JEST 2027 and the next CSIR-NET cycle have no dates yet, so they are not listed.

| 13 Dec 2026 | TIFR GS 2027, Physics paper 2–5 pm |
| 6 Feb 2027 | GATE 2027 window opens (runs to 21 Feb; PH date not yet published) |
| 14 Feb 2027 | JAM 2027 (and one of the six GATE days) |
| 19 Mar 2027 | GATE 2027 results |
GATE 2027 dates and notifications pages (checked 28 Sep 2026); TIFR GS 2027 admissions page; JAM 2027 brochure (p.23).
Two dates in this list are worth a second look. TIFR’s GS on 13 December is two months before GATE and uses much of the same physics, so it doubles as a full-length mock. And 14 February is both JAM day and one of the six GATE days; GATE has not yet said which day PH is on. GATE is open from the third year of a bachelor’s degree, so a final-year B.Sc. student can be registered for both. If GATE PH lands on 14 February in the same session as JAM, you cannot sit both; check the GATE paper-wise schedule the day it is published.
M.Tech with GATE PH: what CCMT really shows
The central counselling for NIT, IIIT and other centrally funded M.Tech seats (CCMT) listed PH as an admissible paper for 123 programme groups at 39 institutes in 2026. About 36 of those groups are physics by name: materials, nano, photonics, lasers, quantum technology and semiconductors. There is a catch that every “GATE PH M.Tech cut-off” list misses. NIC’s closing scores are pooled across every GATE paper a group admits. A group that takes 13 papers closes at a score set mostly by EC and EE candidates, not by physicists. Only when a group admits PH alone does its closing score describe PH candidates.
| Institute · programme | GATE papers in the group | 2026 OPEN closing, Round 1 / last round | PH marks, 2026 field (ours) |

NIC CCMT 2026 opening and closing scores; marks by inverting the GATE score formula with the PH 2026 qualifying mark 25.5 and top-candidates’ mean 64.68 (our arithmetic). Pooled scores, so the marks column is a guide, not a PH cut-off, except for the PH-only group.
Pooled across each group’s GATE papers except the PH-only group. The same numbers are in the table above.
The PH-only group is the most useful row on the page. At NIT Rourkela the same programme ran a mixed group (seven papers, closing 664 in Round 1) and a PH-only group that closed at 420 for OPEN, about 30.5 marks on the 2026 field. Its reserved-category seats closed lower still.
| Category | Closing score, 2026 (round) | PH marks, 2026 field (ours) |
|---|---|---|
| OPEN | 420 (Round 1, unchanged to the last round) | 30.5 |
| OBC-NCL | 334 (Round 1) | 24.4 |
| SC | 231 (Round 1); 259 (Special Round 1) | 17.0; 19.0 |
| EWS | 320 (Round 1); 315 (Round 2) | 23.4; 23.0 |
NIC CCMT 2026 closing scores, NIT Rourkela, Semiconductor Devices and Technology, group 2 (GATE PH only). Marks are our arithmetic.
What we could not find: IIT M.Tech (COAP) and IISc closing scores for PH candidates, and institute-level PH shortlisting cut-offs for IIT and IISc physics PhDs. We have left them out rather than guess.
Which exam should you take?
GATE, JEST, CSIR-NET or JAM? Three questions
Practise it, don't just read it
All five exams test the same core physics. Our Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory quizzes are a quick check on the quantum mechanics that GATE, JEST and NET all weight heavily.
The ProSyllabus GATE Physics library has eight quizzes today: four topic quizzes (Simple Harmonic Oscillator Dynamics, Gauss’s Law Applications, the Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy) and four section quizzes (Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics), each with a worked explanation for every option. There are no quizzes yet for Mathematical Physics, Thermodynamics, Optical Physics or Measurements; use the official papers for those.
Is JEST better than GATE for a physics PhD?
For research institutes such as TIFR, the IISERs, IMSc and HRI, JEST is the exam they use: its site lists 31 participating institutes. GATE PH is broader: it also opens M.Tech seats and BARC and DRDO jobs, and it lasts three years.
Can I get into TIFR with a GATE Physics score?
We found no published GATE route into TIFR Physics. TIFR admits through its own GS exam (13 Dec 2026) and a JEST-score route; its eligibility table decides which other scores each programme accepts.
Does CSIR-NET Physical Sciences have negative marking?
Yes, 25% in all three parts: 0.5, 0.875 and 1.25 marks for a wrong answer in Parts A, B and C. The exam is three hours and you answer 15, 20 and 20 questions in the three parts.
How long is a GATE PH score valid compared with JEST and NET?
GATE three years; JEST until the JEST 2028 results; a NET JRF must be taken up within two years; a TIFR GS result lasts one admission cycle.
What GATE PH score do I need for an M.Tech at an NIT?
CCMT closing scores are pooled across all papers a group admits, so most are not PH cut-offs. The one PH-only group we found, NIT Rourkela’s Semiconductor Devices and Technology, closed at 420 for OPEN in 2026, about 30.5 marks by our arithmetic.
Can I get an IIT M.Sc. through GATE Physics?
No. IIT M.Sc., joint M.Sc.–PhD, dual-degree and integrated PhD admission is through JAM, which is on 14 February 2027.
How many students take CSIR-NET Physical Sciences compared with GATE PH?
In the latest cycles, 21,810 appeared for CSIR-NET Physical Sciences (June 2026) and 18,055 for GATE PH 2026.
