Checked 28 September 2026. Papers and keys are official (GATE download pages). The section classification, question-type counts, repeat-topic list and every average are ours; each question’s classification is recorded in our working file. The GATE 2027 paper may weight sections differently.
Weightage tables for GATE Physics are everywhere, and most of them are guesses: ranges like “12–15 marks” that nobody can trace to a paper. This guide is built the slow way. We took the official PH question papers and final answer keys for 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, all 220 Physics questions, and sorted each one into the 11 sections of the 2027 syllabus. That gives the marks each section actually carried, how the mix of MCQ, MSQ and NAT has swung, which topics come back year after year, and a few traps in the answer keys that change how you should answer.
Our counts from the official PH papers and final keys.
Where other pages get this wrong
In 2023–2026 Nuclear and Particle Physics carried between 6 and 14 marks (14 in both 2023 and 2025), Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics between 6 and 11, and Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory and Thermodynamics together averaged 31.75 marks.
Commonly published instead: Collegedunia’s GATE Physics syllabus page (checked 28 Sep 2026) gives Nuclear and Particle Physics “6 to 8 marks”, Thermodynamics “11 to 13”, and says Quantum Mechanics, Electromagnetic Theory and Thermodynamics make up about 40 marks.

How we counted
Each Physics question (Q11 to Q65) was assigned to one 2027 section by its main idea. Where a question mixes two areas, for example a Fermi-energy calculation that belongs as much to Statistical Mechanics as to Solid State, we used the section whose syllabus phrase fits best, and recorded the choice. General Aptitude (Q1 to Q10, 15 marks) is left out of every section table, so each year totals 55 questions and 85 marks. Because the two new 2027 sections did not exist before, a question now counted under Optical Physics was in Atomic Physics or Electromagnetic Theory in its own year.

| 11 / 16 | 14 / 27 | 17 / 26 | Classical Mechanics + EM Theory combined (ours) | 7 / 12 | 20.25 |
Our classification of every Physics question in the official PH papers 2023–2026. Each year totals 55 questions and 85 marks (the combined row is a sum of two rows above).
Four readings, all ours. Quantum Mechanics is the only section that never dropped below 11 marks, and it reached 15 in 2026. Nuclear and Particle Physics is the most volatile: 14 marks in 2023 and 2025, but 9 in 2024 and only 6 in 2026, so any page quoting a narrow range for it is quoting one year. Solid State Physics has been falling, 12, 12, 8 and then 6 marks, and the 2027 syllabus has cut several of its topics. And Classical Mechanics and Electromagnetic Theory have grown together, from 12 marks combined in 2023 to 26 in 2026.
Our counts from the official keys; the same numbers are in the table above.
MCQ, MSQ and NAT: the mix swings every year
GATE does not fix how many questions of each type a paper has, and PH shows it. In 2023, 55 of the 85 Physics marks were MCQs, the only type with negative marking. In 2024 it was 33. MSQ marks went from 33 to 13 to 32 to 30 to 18. So do not prepare for a fixed pattern; prepare to switch between the three.
Our counts from the official PH answer keys, Physics part only.
| Year | MCQ (marks / Q) | MSQ (marks / Q) | NAT (marks / Q) | NAT share of 85 (ours) | MSQ + NAT marks, no negatives (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 31 / 20 | 33 / 21 | 21 / 14 | 25% | 54 |
| 2023 | 55 / 36 | 13 / 9 | 17 / 10 | 20% | 30 |
| 2024 | 33 / 26 | 32 / 17 | 20 / 12 | 24% | 52 |
| 2025 | 35 / 24 | 30 / 18 | 20 / 13 | 24% | 50 |
| 2026 | 41 / 27 | 18 / 11 | 26 / 17 | 31% | 44 |
Our counts from the official PH final answer keys 2022–2026 (Physics questions only; the percentage is our arithmetic).
NAT has been between 17 and 26 marks, 20% to 31% of the Physics part. It is not a steady “nearly 30%”; that was true only of 2026. What is steady is that NAT and MSQ together carried 30 to 54 marks with no negative marking at all, so an attempt on those cannot cost marks (a wrong answer simply scores zero). The negative-marking risk sits on the MCQs, 31 to 55 marks a paper.
Single-answer MSQs: the trap in the keys
An MSQ (multiple select question) can have one or more correct options. Many students assume “at least two”. The official keys show otherwise: in four of the last five papers, at least one MSQ had exactly one correct option. There is no partial credit, so marking a second option on such a question scores zero for it (no negative mark, but nothing gained).
| Year | MSQs whose key has one option |
|---|---|
| 2022 | Q52 |
| 2023 | Q55, Q56 |
| 2024 | none |
| 2025 | Q48, Q49, Q52 |
| 2026 | Q56 (Rutherford scattering, closest approach) |
Official PH final answer keys 2022–2026.
Keys also record questions where every candidate was given the marks (“marks to all”), usually because the question was flawed. PH 2023 had four in the Physics part, Q11, Q15, Q41 and Q59, worth 6 marks together. 2024 and 2022 had such items only in General Aptitude, and 2025 and 2026 had none. These do not change how you prepare, but they explain why an answer key can look odd when you check your own attempt.
| Year | “Marks to all” questions |
|---|---|
| 2022 | GA Q10 |
| 2023 | Q11 and Q15 (1 mark each); Q41 and Q59 (2 marks each; Q59 is a NAT) |
| 2024 | GA Q7 and GA Q10 |
| 2025 | none |
| 2026 | none |

| Electronics | Logic circuits | every year, 2023–2026 |
Our topic tagging of the official PH papers 2023–2026. Question numbers are as printed (Physics is Q11–Q65).
Notice what is not on it. Two questions of the 2026 paper were on topics that the 2027 syllabus has removed (Q32 on tight binding, Q54 on band-gap transitions), and a third, Q50 on self-adjoint differential operators, sits in the special-functions block that went, though operators in Hilbert space remain under Quantum Mechanics. None of those topics repeated across years. Nothing on the repeat list is affected by the 2027 cuts: all 20 rows are still in the syllabus. That makes this list a safe place to start, whatever the 2027 paper does with the two new sections.
What the 2026 paper looked like
The most recent paper is the best guide to the current setters’ style. By our count it had 27 MCQs (41 marks), 11 MSQs (18 marks) and 17 NATs (26 marks) in the Physics part. Quantum Mechanics had 9 questions for 15 marks, Electromagnetic Theory and Classical Mechanics 13 marks each, Thermodynamics 11, Mathematical Physics 10, and Nuclear, Solid State and Electronics 6 each. It also had the lowest scores of the four on the official numbers: the mean mark of all who appeared fell to 14.68, and nobody scored more than 70. Our marks-vs-rank guide shows what that did to the score.
| Section (2027) | Questions in 2026 | Marks in 2026 |

Practise it, don't just read it
Quantum Mechanics is the one section that carried 11 marks or more every year. Our Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy quizzes drill exactly the problems that recur there.
The ProSyllabus GATE Physics library has eight quizzes today: four topic quizzes (Simple Harmonic Oscillator Dynamics, Gauss’s Law Applications, the Schrödinger Equation in One Dimension and Perturbation Theory for Degeneracy) and four section quizzes (Nuclear and Particle Physics, Electronics, Solid State Physics and Atomic and Molecular Physics), each with a worked explanation for every option. There are no quizzes yet for Mathematical Physics, Thermodynamics, Optical Physics or Measurements; use the official papers for those.
Which section has the highest weightage in GATE Physics?
Quantum Mechanics: 11, 12, 12 and 15 marks in 2023–2026, an average of 12.5 out of 85 on our count of the official papers.
How many marks does Nuclear Physics carry in GATE PH?
It varies widely: 14 marks in 2023, 9 in 2024, 14 in 2025 and 6 in 2026, on our count of the official papers.
How many NAT questions are there in GATE Physics?
In the Physics part, 14 NATs (21 marks) in 2022, 10 (17) in 2023, 12 (20) in 2024, 13 (20) in 2025 and 17 (26) in 2026.
Can an MSQ in GATE have only one correct answer?
Yes. The official PH keys have MSQs with a single correct option in 2022, 2023, 2025 and 2026. MSQs have no partial credit and no negative marking.
Is there negative marking for MSQ and NAT in GATE Physics?
No. Only MCQs carry negative marks: 1/3 of a mark for a wrong one-mark MCQ and 2/3 for a wrong two-mark MCQ.
Which topics are asked every year in GATE Physics?
On our tagging of 2023–2026, residues and poles in Mathematical Physics and logic circuits in Electronics appeared in all four papers. Tensors, magnetised bodies, spin addition, relativistic kinematics and particle conservation laws were close behind.
Where can I download GATE Physics previous year papers?
From the Download section of the GATE 2027 website (IIT Madras), which lists question papers and keys from 2007 onwards. Direct links for 2022–2026 are in the sources below.
