Checked 28 September 2026. Cut-offs, seats and fees are from IIT Madras’s official 2024–2026 cut-off PDFs, the 2026 admission brochure and the 2026-27 fee circular. Marks equivalents are our arithmetic. The 2027 brochure, seats and fees are not yet published.
For an Economics graduate, GATE XH-C1 leads to one admission that is decided on the GATE score and nothing else: IIT Madras’s two-year M.A. in Economics. It admitted its first batch through GATE in July 2023. There is no separate entrance test or interview; the brochure says admission is strictly in the order of merit by GATE score. That makes it the one place where your XH-C1 score converts directly into a seat, and where the published closing scores tell you exactly what was needed. This guide sets out those closing scores for 2024, 2025 and 2026 in every category, converts them into marks, and adds the seat matrix and the fees.

Where other pages get this wrong
The IIT Madras M.A. is decided only on the GATE score. It is not a PSU route, and no PSU, RBI or government recruiter uses GATE Economics. In 2026, 2,952 candidates appeared for GATE Economics; 4,166 is the number who registered.
Commonly published instead: HaqSe Economics’ “How to get into IIT Madras MA Economics via GATE” (checked 28 Sep 2026) says 4,166 students “appeared” and lists “PSU eligibility” and “PSU recruitment” among the benefits of the GATE Economics score.

The streams an Economics candidate can enter
IIT Madras’s M.A. has four streams (English Studies, Development Studies, Economics and Public Policy), each with 25 seats for Indian students; foreign nationals are supernumerary. Each stream accepts particular XH sections. For an Economics (XH-C1) candidate the brochure’s seat table opens three doors, not one.
| Stream | XH sections accepted | Seats (2026) | For an Economics candidate |
|---|---|---|---|
| HS3 Economics | XH-C1 only | 25 | All 25 seats |
| HS2 Development Studies | XH-C6 (15), XH-C1 (5), XH-C4 (3), XH-C5 (2) | 25 | 5 seats |
| HS4 Public Policy (new in 2026) | Any XH section | 25 | Open competition with all XH sections |
IIT Madras M.Tech./M.Sc./M.A. Admission 2026 Information Brochure, Table 3.1 (M.A. Non-HTTA seat table). Seats are distributed across categories by the institute’s reservation rules.
All M.A. seats are “Non-HTTA”: they carry no Half-Time Teaching Assistantship, so there is no monthly stipend. The ₹12,400 a month that appears in the same brochure is the M.Tech assistantship. Plan to pay the fees yourself or through a scholarship.

IIT Madras GATE cut-off PDFs, M.A. (Non-HTTA) tables, 2024 (p.6), 2025 (p.7) and 2026 (p.8). The 2024 PDF prints its columns as GEN, OBC, SC, ST, EWS; the 2025–2026 PDFs as GEN, EWS, OBC, SC, ST. We have put them in one order. “–” means no score was printed for that category.
Check your GATE Economics score against IIT Madras M.A. closing scores
Enter your GATE score (out of 1000) and category. The tool compares it with the lowest score admitted to each IIT Madras M.A. stream that an Economics candidate can enter, in 2024, 2025 and 2026.
Closing scores from IIT Madras’s GATE cut-off PDFs for 2024, 2025 and 2026 (the tables below carry the same numbers). PwD cut-offs are separate and listed in the table. A closing score is where last year’s merit list stopped, not a guarantee for next year; a score below 350 is below the general qualifying score and cannot be used by a GEN candidate.
Three patterns are worth knowing. First, 2025 was an outlier: every Economics closing score rose sharply (GEN 737, EWS 619, OBC 527, SC 464) and fell back in 2026. That is the 40-mark cap at work. It pushed every 2025 score up, and many applicants were holding 2025 scores. Second, the reserved-category closing scores are far below GEN. An SC candidate needed 214 and an ST candidate 157 in 2026, both scores that correspond to less than the general qualifying mark. Third, the Development Studies XH-C1 seats close close to the Economics cut-off (604 against 621 for GEN in 2026), so they are a real second chance rather than an easy back door.
What those scores meant in marks
Converting a closing score into GATE marks shows the real target. The conversion assumes the score came from the same year’s GATE; a GATE score is valid for three years, so some admitted candidates will have held older scores.
| Cut-off | Marks on that year’s field (ours) | AIR band that score fell in |
|---|---|---|
| HS3N GEN 2026: 621 | ≈ 51.7 of 100 | 600–700: ranks 47–91 |
| HS3N GEN 2025: 737 | ≈ 70.6 of 100 | 700–800: ranks 27–118 |
| HS3N GEN 2024: 621 | ≈ 52.3 of 100 | 600–700: ranks 37–86 |
| HS2N (XH-C1) GEN 2026: 604 | ≈ 50.7 of 100 | 600–700: ranks 47–91 |
| HS3N OBC-NCL 2026: 372 | ≈ 37.0 of 100 | 300–400: ranks 348–587 |
Our inversion of the official GATE score formula with each year’s qualifying mark and top-candidates’ mean. AIR bands are from the official statistical reports.
So a general-category candidate who wants a realistic chance at the Economics stream should aim for a score of about 650, which is roughly 53–54 marks on a 2026-type paper. Remember that the GATE rank is among Economics candidates only, and that about 2,950 of them appeared in 2026. A score of 621 meant a rank somewhere in the top hundred.
Fees for 2026-27
| Item | GEN / OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD | Sponsored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee, per semester | ₹20,000 | Waived | — |
| Total payable at admission (first semester, incl. one-time and other fees) | ₹61,402 | ₹41,402 | ₹1,11,402 |
IIT Madras fee structure for 2026 admissions (UG and PG), M.A. column. Later semesters cost less than the first because one-time charges are not repeated; hostel and mess charges are billed separately.
Set the fees against what else a GATE Economics score buys. A first semester of about ₹61,000, with later semesters lower because the one-time charges are not repeated, is well below the fees most private universities charge for an M.A. in Economics. The trade-off is the missing stipend, so budget for hostel and mess charges from your own funds or a scholarship.
Applying
Applications are made on IIT Madras’s M.Tech./M.Sc./M.A. admission portal, usually in spring after GATE results; the 2027 dates are not yet out. Apply to each stream you are eligible for, since a seat in HS2 or HS4 is filled from a separate merit list. Keep your GATE 2027 scorecard, since a score from GATE 2025 or 2026 may also be valid for the 2027 intake. Check the 2027 brochure for which GATE years it accepts, and use your best valid score.
Practise it, don't just read it
Reaching a 621 on a 2026-type paper meant about 52 marks: roughly 30 from the Economics section and the rest from Reasoning and General Aptitude. Microeconomics, the section every paper weights most, is where most of those 30 come from.
The ProSyllabus GATE Economics library has one topic quiz today: Production Function and Returns (Microeconomics, XH1.1), with a worked explanation for every option. For every other section, work from the official past papers and keys linked in our previous-papers guide.
Can I get into IIT Madras M.A. Economics through GATE?
