Alerts and Updates for GATE Humanities and Social Sciences - Economics

IIT Madras is the organizing institute for GATE 2027 and released the official notification and brochure on 20 July 2026 at gate2027.iitm.ac.in. The exam, covering 30 papers including Humanities and Social Sciences (XH), will be a computer-based test held on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.

GATE 2027 registration, originally planned for 14 August 2026, was postponed; the GOAPS application portal opened on 27 August 2026 and is open now. Regular registration (no late fee) closes 27 September 2026, with an extended late-fee window until 5 October 2026. DigiLocker registration and live facial verification are also now mandatory.

The GATE 2027 syllabus was revised across all papers for the first time in five years to align with current industry needs; a new Robotics and Automation (RA) paper was introduced, and Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) became a sectional paper within Engineering Sciences (XE).

The official GATE 2027 XH (Humanities and Social Sciences) combined syllabus confirms the paper structure: General Aptitude (15 marks), a common XH0 Reasoning and Comprehension section (25 marks, covering reading comprehension, expression, analytical and logical reasoning), plus one chosen optional subject worth 60 marks.

The GATE 2027 XH1 Economics syllabus spans seven sections — Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics/Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, International Economics, Public Economics, Development Economics, and Indian Economy — covering topics from game theory and welfare economics to GST, fiscal federalism and India's balance of payments.

GATE 2027 has not been notified yet. IIT Madras is expected to be the organising institute, with the official notification and information brochure anticipated in late July or August 2026. Until that brochure appears on the official GATE portal, every 2027 date in circulation is tentative.

The GOAPS application window for GATE 2027 is expected to open around 24 August 2026, with the regular deadline in late September 2026 and an extended late-fee window running to mid-October 2026. A correction facility is expected in November 2026. None of this is officially confirmed yet.

GATE 2027 is expected on 6, 7, 13 and 14 February 2027 as a three-hour computer-based test in forenoon and afternoon sessions, with admit cards expected in early January 2027 and results in March 2027. These dates are listed as expected, not confirmed by the organising institute.

The XH paper is scored as General Aptitude 15 marks, the compulsory XH-B1 Reasoning and Comprehension section 25 marks, and one optional section worth 60 marks. Economics candidates take XH-C1; the other options are English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. Total 65 questions, 100 marks, three hours.

In the official GATE 2026 XH syllabus, XH-B1 tests reading comprehension, expression, analytical and logical reasoning in an LSAT, GRE or GMAT style rather than grammar, while XH-C1 Economics spans Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics and Econometrics, International, Public and Development Economics, and the Indian Economy. No 2027 revision announced.
