Checked 28 September 2026. Papers and keys are official (GATE download pages). The section classification, question-type counts and recurring-topic list are ours; each question’s classification is recorded in our working file.
The official GATE site gives you the papers and keys. It does not tell you which parts of the syllabus they actually test. We went through all 156 Economics questions of the 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers (39 a year, 60 marks), put each one into one of the seven syllabus sections and checked every answer against the final key. The result is clear. Microeconomics, Section 3 (statistics, econometrics and maths) and Macroeconomics together take about 42 of the 60 marks. The four smaller sections, International, Public, Development and the Indian Economy, share the remaining 17–18, and their shares swing a lot from year to year.
Our classification of the official XH-C1 papers and final keys, 2023–2026.

Darker = more marks. Each cell is questions / marks out of the 60-mark Economics section.
Our classification of the official papers and final keys. 2025 also had one mixed question (Q47, matching the Phillips, Kuznets, Laffer and J curves, 2 marks) that fits no single section.
| 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | Section | Mean marks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 / 13 | 11 / 20 | 10 / 15 | 9 / 14 | 1 Microeconomics | 15.5 |
| 9 / 14 | 8 / 10 | 10 / 15 | 9 / 13 | 2 Macroeconomics | 13.0 |
| 6 / 10 | 11 / 18 | 9 / 13 | 9 / 13 | 3 Statistics, Econometrics, Maths | 13.5 |

| 5 / 7 | 5 / 7 | 2 / 3 | 3 / 5 | 6 Development Economics | 5.5 |
| 3 / 3 | 2 / 2 | 2 / 3 | 4 / 7 | 7 Indian Economy | 3.75 |
Questions / marks per section, our classification. Three 2024 questions (Q30, Q34 and Q54) could also be read as Public Economics; we filed them elsewhere, which is why 2024 shows 0 for Section 5.
Read the table as ranges rather than targets. Microeconomics has never fallen below 13 marks, and Macroeconomics and Section 3 have each stayed at 10 or more. The small sections are where the paper surprises: International Economics fell from 7 marks in 2023 to 2 in 2025, and the Indian Economy rose to 7 in 2026. A plan that gives the three large sections about 70% of your subject time and spreads the rest evenly is what four years of papers support.
Question types: less negative marking than you think
Marks out of 60, from the official final keys. Only MCQs carry negative marks (−1/3 or −2/3).
Two things stand out. First, NAT is steady at 20–24 marks: a numerical answer typed in, with no options to eliminate and no penalty for a wrong answer. Most NATs are computation, such as elasticities, multipliers, equilibrium prices, expected values and regression coefficients, so speed with arithmetic matters here more than in any other Humanities section. Second, the MCQ share moves between 18 and 29 marks. Unlike engineering papers, Economics has not drifted towards all-numerical questions.
Topics that keep coming back
These are the topics we found asked in two or more of the four papers, with question numbers so you can go straight to them in the official PDFs.

Question numbers as printed in the official XH-C1 papers (the Economics block runs Q27–Q65 in 2022–2026 files). Our classification.
The Indian Economy questions deserve a separate note because they are the ones no textbook covers: they use current data and schemes. Recent examples are government schemes (2026 Q30, Q46), the PLFS 2023-24 labour survey (2026 Q56), Economic Survey trade figures (2026 Q57), the 14th Finance Commission (2023 Q38), PMKVY (2023 Q40), MSP and the CACP (2024 Q32) and the 1991 reforms (2025 Q37). Reading the latest Economic Survey and Union Budget summaries in January is the cheapest preparation for those 3–7 marks.
The official papers and keys
The GATE 2027 download page (IIT Madras) carries every paper back to 2007, but Economics exists only from the XH paper's introduction. For 2022 and 2023 all six XH sections are in one PDF, so search it for “Economics” or “C1” and keep only those pages; the Economics block is numbered Q27–Q65. For 2024–2026 there is a separate Economics file.
| Year | Question paper | Final key | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | XH-C1.pdf | XHC1_Keys.pdf | Q61 key accepts “187 to 188 OR 0” (a typo in the stem made both answers correct) |
| 2025 | XH-C1-2025.pdf | XHC1_Keys.pdf | GA Q8 marks to all |
| 2024 | XHC124S3.pdf | XH-C1FinalAnswerKey.pdf | The key lists every MCQ answer as “A” because it follows the master-paper order, which is the order of the posted paper |
| 2023 | xh_2023.pdf (all XH sections) | XH_ANS_GATE2023.pdf | Economics Q28 marks to all |
| 2022 | xh_2022.pdf (all XH sections) | xh_2022.pdf (keys folder) | Not in our weightage count |

Use the older papers differently from the newer ones. The 2022 and 2023 papers are worth writing whole, but mark the handful of Section 3 questions against the 2027 syllabus rather than the old one: “statistical inference” items are now filed under estimation and hypothesis testing, and none of them tests the new time-series block. The 2025 paper is the easiest of the four by its mean mark (38.18 against 23–31 in the other years), so a high mark there tells you less than the same mark on the 2024 or 2026 paper. Write 2026 last, closest to the exam, because it is the best guide to the current setters.

Game theory and production are the two Microeconomics topics every paper touches. Our library’s Production Function and Returns quiz covers returns to scale, isoquants and Cobb–Douglas properties.
The ProSyllabus GATE Economics library has one topic quiz today: Production Function and Returns (Microeconomics, XH1.1), with a worked explanation for every option. For every other section, work from the official past papers and keys linked in our previous-papers guide.
Which section has the most weightage in GATE Economics?
Microeconomics, with an average of 15.5 of the 60 section marks in 2023–2026 by our count, followed by Statistics, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (13.5) and Macroeconomics (13.0).
Where can I download GATE XH-C1 previous year papers?
From the download page of the GATE 2027 website (IIT Madras). 2024–2026 have separate Economics files; 2022 and 2023 have all XH sections in one PDF.
How many NAT questions are in GATE Economics?
NAT questions carried 20 to 24 of the 60 Economics marks each year from 2023 to 2026. They have no negative marking.
Is there negative marking in GATE Economics?
Only on MCQs: −1/3 for a one-mark and −2/3 for a two-mark question. MSQ and NAT answers carry no negative marks. MCQs carried 18 to 29 of the 60 Economics marks a year.
Which topics repeat in GATE Economics?
Game theory and IS–LM/multiplier questions appeared every year from 2023 to 2026. Growth models, exchange rates, Mundell–Fleming, HDI/SDGs, Tobin’s q and the Harris–Todaro model have each appeared two to four times.
Why does the 2024 GATE Economics answer key show every answer as A?
The key follows the master version of the paper, and the posted question paper is that master version, so in it the correct option is A. Candidates saw the options in a shuffled order.
