Checked 29 September 2026. From the IBPS PO/MT XVI notification (01.07.2026) and its Annexure I updated 27.08.2026, the CRP RRBs-XV notification (01.09.2026), IBPS’s calendar dated 16.01.2026, and Maharashtra Gramin Bank’s RTI disclosure for RRB pay. PO vacancies may be revised again.
IBPS runs both exams, three months apart, and a large share of candidates sit both. They look alike — both lead to an entry-level officer post, both have prelims, a Main and an interview weighted 80:20, and both charge ₹850 (₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD). The differences are in the details that decide your life after selection: which banks, where you can be posted, whether you need a regional language, what the Main asks of you, and what you are paid. This guide compares them from the two official notifications and says plainly where the official record is silent.
IBPS PO/MT XVI Annexure I updated 27.08.2026; CRP RRBs-XV Annexure I updated 25.09.2026; IBPS calendar 2026-27.

| Basic pay | Not in the notification; ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920 in an RRB’s own RTI disclosure | ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920 (in the notification) |
The exam gap is real. The RRB prelims has no English section and gives 45 minutes for 80 questions; the PO prelims tests English and runs 60 minutes. The RRB Main has no descriptive paper and lets you take the language test in Hindi, and its other tests are offered in regional languages in many states; the PO Main is 160 minutes of objective tests plus a 30-minute descriptive English paper. For a candidate strong in reasoning and arithmetic but less comfortable in written English, the RRB route is the better fit on paper.
Exact exam days from IBPS’s tentative calendar dated 16.01.2026; month windows from the two notifications (interview and allotment bars span the whole month or months named). IBPS may change any date.
The calendars barely overlap. The PO Main (4 October 2026) falls a week after RRB registration closed on 27 September and well before the RRB prelims, but the PO personality test and interviews run in November and December, alongside the RRB prelims and Main. A candidate in both processes should expect an interview in one and an exam in the other in the same few weeks.
The two Main papers, test by test
The Main is where most of the difference in preparation lies. The IBPS PO Main has four objective tests and a descriptive paper, each separately timed; the RRB Scale I Main has five objective tests. Marks per question differ sharply, so the same hour of study buys different returns in each.
| Exam | Test | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO Main | Reasoning | 40 | 60 | 45 min |
| IBPS PO Main | General / Economy / Banking / Digital / Financial Awareness incl. RBI circulars | 50 | 60 | 35 min |
| IBPS PO Main | English Language | 40 | 20 | 35 min |
| IBPS PO Main | Data Analysis & Interpretation | 40 | 60 | 45 min |
| IBPS PO Main | Descriptive (essay and comprehension), English | 2 | 25 | 30 min |
| RRB Scale I Main | Reasoning | 40 | 50 | 30 min |
| RRB Scale I Main | Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 50 | 30 min |
| RRB Scale I Main | General Awareness | 40 | 40 | 15 min |
| RRB Scale I Main | English or Hindi Language | 40 | 40 | 30 min |
| RRB Scale I Main | Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 | 15 min |
Three things stand out. The PO Main gives General, Economy and Banking Awareness 60 marks, including RBI circulars, against 40 for General Awareness in the RRB Main. The PO English test carries only 20 marks, but the descriptive paper adds 25 marks of written English that IBPS says may be scored by an automated mechanism. And the RRB Main has a separate Computer Knowledge test worth 20 marks, which the PO Main does not have. The prelims differ as well: the PO prelims has English (30 questions, 30 marks), Quantitative Aptitude (35, 30) and Reasoning (35, 40), each with 20 minutes and each with its own cut-off.
After selection
| Point | IBPS RRB Officer Scale I | IBPS PO/MT |
|---|---|---|
| Personality test | None | Self-report test, non-qualifying, but mandatory to reach the interview |
| Reserve list | Per category, as per extant provision; allotment three to four times within its validity | About 20% of vacancies per category; allotment three to four times; lapses one year after provisional allotment |
| Where you can be posted | Allotment restricted to the RRBs of the state you opted for; “may be posted anywhere” within that | “All India cadre”; “may be posted anywhere in India/ outside India” |
| Who issues the offer | The allotted RRB | The allotted bank |
For many candidates the posting row decides the question. An RRB Scale I officer works for one state’s RRB, a bank with a rural-development mandate whose branch network is concentrated outside the big cities but can include towns and cities in its area, and in the language of that state. A PSB probationary officer joins an all-India cadre and can be moved across the country, or abroad at the bank’s discretion. Neither notification promises a particular branch or city.
The pay question
The IBPS PO notification prints the Junior Management Grade Scale I basic pay under the 12th Bipartite Settlement: ₹48,480 – 2,000 (7) – 62,480 – 2,340 (2) – 67,160 – 2,680 (7) – 85,920. The CRP RRBs-XV notification prints no pay scale at all — pay is set by the RRBs, not IBPS — so the place to look is an RRB’s own record. Maharashtra Gramin Bank, one of the 28 participating RRBs, publishes its scales of pay (with effect from 01.11.2022) in its suo motu disclosure under Section 4 of the RTI Act, and its Officer Scale I scale is exactly the PSB scale.
| Source | Basic pay scale | Maximum basic | Applies to |
|---|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO/MT XVI notification (official) | 48,480 – 2,000 (7) – 62,480 – 2,340 (2) – 67,160 – 2,680 (7) – 85,920 | 85,920 | PSB probationary officer / management trainee (JMGS-I) |
| Maharashtra Gramin Bank RTI disclosure (official) | 48,480 – 2,000 (7) – 62,480 – 2,340 (2) – 67,160 – 2,680 (7) – 85,920 | 85,920 | RRB Officer Scale I, w.e.f. 01.11.2022 |
| Coaching sites (reported, no document cited) | 48,480 – 1,490 (7) – 58,910 – 1,740 (2) – 62,390 – 1,990 (7) – 76,320 | 76,320 | Printed as RRB Scale I; does not match the RRB’s own disclosure |
So the basic pay scale of an RRB Scale I officer matches a PSB probationary officer’s, on the evidence of an RRB’s own disclosure — consistent with the Finance Ministry’s direction of 08.07.2024 (reported) that RRBs implement the 12th Bipartite Settlement on par with their sponsor banks. The scale ending at ₹76,320 that several coaching pages print does not match that disclosure; treat it as outdated or wrong. We have checked one RRB’s document, not all 28. In-hand estimates vary widely — ₹74,561 (Adda247 family), ₹74,000–77,000 with gross about ₹80,437 (Physics Wallah), and “₹60,000 – ₹90,000” (Testbook) — because they depend on the posting city, DA rate and deductions; none is an IBPS or RRB figure. A headline of “salary ₹48,480” quotes the starting basic, not pay.
Where other pages get this wrong
RRB Officer Scale I basic pay is ₹48,480 – 2,000 (7) – 62,480 – 2,340 (2) – 67,160 – 2,680 (7) – 85,920 in Maharashtra Gramin Bank’s own RTI disclosure — the same scale as a PSB probationary officer. The IBPS notification itself states no pay.
Commonly published instead: An RRB Scale I scale topping out at ₹76,320, RRB salary tables presented as “as per the official notification”, and a headline salary of ₹48,480.
Pay for RRB officers is set by the RRBs under Government direction, not by IBPS, so an RRB’s own record is the primary source. ₹48,480 is the starting basic; gross and in-hand pay add allowances that vary by place.
Which one suits you?
A quick decision helper
The helper is a rule of thumb, not a prediction; it counts your answers towards whichever route they favour, and a tie between routes shows “sit both”.
Is IBPS RRB PO easier than IBPS PO?
The pattern is lighter: no English in the prelims, no descriptive paper and Hindi or regional-language options. Competition depends on your state.
Is RRB PO salary the same as IBPS PO salary?
The basic pay scale is the same: ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920, per the IBPS PO notification and an RRB’s own RTI disclosure (Maharashtra Gramin Bank). Allowances and in-hand pay vary by bank and place.
Can I be transferred out of my state as an RRB officer?
Scale I allotment is restricted to the RRBs of the state you opted for, and each RRB operates within its own area.
Does IBPS PO require a local language?
No. The IBPS PO/MT XVI notification has no local-language requirement.
What is the age limit difference between RRB PO and IBPS PO?
RRB Scale I is above 18 and below 30 as on 01.09.2026; IBPS PO is 20 to 30 as on 01.07.2026.
Do IBPS PO and RRB PO exams clash in 2026?
Not the exams: PO prelims 22–23 August and Main 4 October; RRB prelims 21–22 November and Main 20 December. PO interviews in November–December overlap the RRB exams.
Is there a descriptive paper in RRB PO?
No. The RRB Scale I Main is objective only; IBPS PO has a 25-mark descriptive paper.
How many vacancies are in IBPS PO 2026 and RRB PO 2026?
IBPS PO/MT XVI: 7,565 in the Annexure I updated 27.08.2026 (6,715 at notification; Union Bank of India not yet reported). IBPS RRB XV Officer Scale I: 4,256.
