Checked 28 September 2026. From recruitment adverts and notices published 2023–2026 (ISRO ICRB 2026, BARC OCES/DGFS-2026, DRDO RAC 156/157 and its 31 Aug 2026 notice, NHAI, AAI 09/2025, NRSC RMT-1-2026 and 2025 cut-offs, UPSC ESE 2027 notice). Recruiters change their paper lists each year; check the current advert.
Search “GATE Geomatics jobs” and you will find pages promising PSU, ISRO and DRDO posts. We checked the actual adverts. In every GATE-based recruitment advert we could find for 2023–2027, about 25 recruiters, the GE paper is never among the accepted papers. ISRO’s 2026 GATE-based advert takes EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR. NHAI takes Civil only. BARC’s 2026 brochure says M.Sc Geo-informatics holders are not eligible. That does not mean geomatics has no jobs. It means the jobs come through other doors: UPSC’s Engineering Services (Civil), NRSC’s own test, DRDO lateral posts, and research fellowships that accept “GATE in the relevant discipline”. This guide sets out each door with its source.
Recruitment adverts listed below; the count of recruiters is from our check of about 25 GATE-based adverts.
Where other pages get this wrong
No 2023–2027 GATE-based advert of ISRO, DRDO, BARC or any PSU that we checked lists the GE paper. ISRO’s 2026 GATE-based advert (ISRO:ICRB:02(EMC-CEPO):2026) takes EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR only; Survey of India’s Group ‘A’ officers come through UPSC ESE (Civil).
Commonly published instead: Govteka’s GATE GE 2027 guide says the score is “accepted by several PSUs”; Toppersexam’s “GATE Geomatics Engineering Vacancy 2026” lists Survey of India, ISRO, NRSC and DRDO as GATE-GE routes; APSEd’s GE guide names ISRO, SAC, IIRS and DRDO as outlets.
ISRO ICRB 2026 advert; BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure; DRDO RAC Advt 156; NHAI and AAI GATE adverts; UPSC ESE 2027 notice.
GATE-based recruiters: which papers they take
| Recruiter (advert) | GATE papers accepted | GE? | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISRO ICRB, Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ (ISRO:ICRB:02(EMC-CEPO):2026) | EC, ME, CS, CE, EE, AR | No | Shortlist 1:7 on GATE 2025/2026 score; 50% GATE + 50% interview; Level 10 |
| BARC OCES/DGFS-2026 | ME, CH, MT, EE, EC, CS, IN, CE, PH, XE, CY, XL/BT, GG | No | The brochure says M.Sc Geo-informatics (remote sensing and GIS) holders are not eligible |
| DRDO Scientist ‘B’ (Advt 156) | Named per discipline | No | The 31 Aug 2026 notice for 2027 names no disciplines yet |
| NHAI Deputy Manager (Tech), 40 posts | Civil (GATE 2025) | No | Level 10 |
| AAI Junior Executive, 976 posts (Advt 09/2025) | AR, CE, EE, EC, CS (GATE 2023–2025) | No | — |
| NTPC, POWERGRID, GAIL, IOCL, Coal India, NHPC, NLC, NPCIL, HPCL, BHEL, EIL, SAIL, NMDC, DVC, Grid-India | Engineering papers per discipline | No | No geomatics discipline in any advert we checked |
Each recruiter’s own advert or brochure (2025–2026 cycles). ISRO’s 2025 CEPO recruitment used a written test; the switch to GATE came in 2026.
The practical conclusion (ours): if you want a PSU, NHAI, AAI or ISRO GATE route, you need GATE CE (or the relevant engineering paper), not GE. GE pairs with CE as a second paper in 2027, and CE has its own geomatics section, so a civil engineering student can write both and keep both doors open.
Where geomatics graduates are actually hired
| Employer | Route | Status for 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Survey of India, Group ‘A’ | UPSC Engineering Services, Category I Civil Engineering | Notice 02/2027-ENGG (16 Sep 2026); apply by 6 Oct 2026; preliminary exam 31 Jan 2027. GATE plays no part |
| NRSC (ISRO), Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ | NRSC’s own written test and interview | NRSC-RMT-1-2025 had Geoinformatics posts for M.Sc (post 21) and M.Tech (post 26, 11 posts); UR interview cut-offs 54.07 (M.Sc) and 64.79 (M.Tech) of 100 |
| DRDO, Scientist ‘C’ (Remote Sensing / GIS / Geomatics / Civil) | Lateral recruitment, no GATE | Advt 157 (closed 19 Jun 2026): M.Sc RS/GIS/Geomatics or B.E./B.Tech Civil/Geomatics + 3 years’ experience; Level 11 |
| NRSC, IIRS and IIT research projects (JRF) | Master’s degree + NET or GATE “in relevant discipline” | NRSC/RMT/1/2026 (1 Aug 2026): JRF posts for RS&GIS and geoinformatics master’s holders, ₹37,000 + HRA |

Research fellowships: where a GE score does help
The one place a GATE Geomatics score regularly counts in hiring is the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). These adverts do not name a paper code; they ask for NET or a valid GATE score “in the relevant discipline”, and for a geomatics or remote-sensing master’s, GE is that discipline.
| Body and advert | Posts | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| NRSC (ISRO), Hyderabad — NRSC/RMT/1/2026, 1 Aug 2026 | JRF30 (9), JRF31 (6), JRF33, for master’s in RS&GIS or geoinformatics and M.Tech RS&GIS | ₹37,000 + HRA (₹42,000 as SRF after two years) |
| IIT Roorkee, Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation (NRSC-sponsored project), Sep 2026 | 1 JRF/SRF (glacial lakes); interview 7 Oct 2026 | ₹37,000 + HRA |
| IIRS Dehradun (ISRO), JRF advert closing 14 Dec 2025 (reported) | 11 JRF | Not found |
NRSC/RMT/1/2026 and the IIT Roorkee project advert (official). The IIRS advert is reported by a job portal; IIRS’s own page could not be retrieved.
A JRF is a fellowship, typically tied to a project or a PhD, not a permanent post. But for a geomatics graduate it is the most common door that a GATE GE score actually opens, and ISRO centres such as NRSC use it every year.
Which exam for which goal
What should a geomatics student write?
Why ISRO’s 2026 change does not help GE
Until 2025, ISRO’s central recruitment board filled its Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’ posts through its own written test. In 2026 it moved to GATE: advert ISRO:ICRB:02(EMC-CEPO):2026 shortlists candidates at 1:7 on their GATE 2025 or 2026 score, then selects on 50% GATE and 50% interview, for a post at Level 10 (₹56,100 basic pay). That is good news for candidates in the six papers it names — EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR — and none for GE alone. A geomatics graduate who also writes CE, which is an allowed second paper, is eligible on the CE score.
DRDO’s geomatics opening in 2026 was lateral: Advt 157 had one Scientist ‘C’ post in remote sensing, GIS, geoinformatics, geomatics or civil engineering, at Level 11 (₹67,700 basic), for candidates with three years’ experience. It did not use GATE. DRDO’s Scientist ‘B’ recruitment through GATE (Advt 156) named no geomatics discipline, and its public notice of 31 August 2026 for the 2027 cycle says only “relevant Science and Engineering disciplines”, so whether GE will appear in 2027 is not yet known.
We also looked for adverts from NATMO, the Forest Survey of India, the hydrographic offices and the state remote-sensing centres. We found none in the period checked, so we make no claim about how they recruit.
Dates to keep
| What | Date | Source |
|---|---|---|
| GATE 2027 registration (regular / late fee) | 5 Oct 2026 / 12 Oct 2026 | GATE 2027 important-dates page (28 Sep 2026) |
| UPSC ESE 2027 application closes | 6 Oct 2026 | UPSC notice 02/2027-ENGG |
| UPSC ESE 2027 preliminary | 31 Jan 2027 | UPSC notice 02/2027-ENGG |
| GATE 2027 exam days | 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 Feb 2027 (GE’s day not yet published) | GATE 2027 brochure |
| GATE 2027 result | 19 Mar 2027 | GATE 2027 brochure |
Official notices as listed. ESE preliminary on 31 January and GATE from 6 February are a week apart, so a civil student writing both must plan for back-to-back exams.
Practise it, don't just read it
Whichever route you take, remote sensing is the common ground of the GE paper and NRSC’s own syllabus. Try our Microwave Remote Sensing Principles quiz.
The ProSyllabus GATE Geomatics library has three topic quizzes today: Map Projections and Distortions and Coordinate Systems and Datums (Part B1 Maps and Part A GNSS ground) and Microwave Remote Sensing Principles (Part A Remote Sensing), each with a worked explanation for every option.
Which PSUs recruit through GATE Geomatics?
None that we found. In the 2023–2027 GATE-based adverts of about 25 recruiters, including ISRO, BARC, DRDO, NHAI, AAI, NTPC, GAIL, POWERGRID and IOCL, the GE paper is never listed.
Does ISRO recruit through GATE GE?
No. ISRO’s 2026 GATE-based advert (ISRO:ICRB:02(EMC-CEPO):2026) accepts EC, ME, CS, CE, EE and AR. NRSC, an ISRO centre, recruits geoinformatics scientists through its own test and uses GATE for JRF posts.
How do I join Survey of India?
Survey of India’s Group ‘A’ officers are recruited through UPSC’s Engineering Services Examination, Civil Engineering. The 2027 application closes on 6 October 2026. GATE is not used.
What is the use of a GATE Geomatics score?
Mainly M.Tech and PhD admissions in geomatics, geoinformatics and remote sensing, and Junior Research Fellowships that accept GATE in the relevant discipline, such as NRSC’s JRF posts at ₹37,000 a month plus HRA.
Can I write GATE CE and GE together?
Yes. For GATE 2027, CE is one of the allowed second papers for GE (with AR, CS, ES and GG). CE is the paper most GATE recruiters name.
Does BARC accept geoinformatics graduates?
No. BARC’s OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure states that M.Sc Geo-informatics holders with specialisation in remote sensing and GIS are not eligible.
