Checked 28 September 2026. The rules are from the GATE 2027 brochure and GE syllabus. Topic and question-type counts are our classification of the official 2023–2026 papers and keys. The background-to-part advice is our recommendation.
Every GATE Geomatics candidate answers the compulsory Part A (55 marks) and then one of two 30-mark parts. Part B1, Surveying and Mapping, covers maps, land surveying and aerial photogrammetry. Part B2, Image Processing and Analysis, covers quantization, image processing, corrections, enhancement, transformation and classification. The choice worries candidates more than it should, for two reasons from the brochure. You make it in the exam hall, not at registration. And there is no separate B1 or B2 score or rank: everyone gets one score. This guide sets out what four years of papers say about each part and ends with a chooser.

Where other pages get this wrong
The GATE 2027 brochure says: “The choice of Part B1 or Part B2 can be made during the examination.” The 2024, 2025 and 2026 brochures have the same structure.
Commonly published instead: APSEd’s “GATE 2027 Geomatics Engineering – Syllabus and Complete Guide” (checked 28 Sep 2026) says “You must decide your Part B section before the exam”.

The rules, exactly
| Rule | What the brochure says |
|---|---|
| When you choose | During the examination. The booklet shows Part A, B1 and B2 (84 questions in all) |
| Size of each part | 19 questions, 30 marks: 8 one-mark and 11 two-mark |
| Scoring | One GE score and rank. Section-wise score and rank are provided only for GG and XH, not for GE |
| Negative marking | MCQ only, in every part; none for MSQ or NAT |
| Admissions | Institutes see only the GE score. No programme we found asks which part you took |

Because there is no separate rank, the only thing that matters is which part gets you more marks. There is no “prestige” part and no programme that prefers one. Since you choose in the hall, the practical plan is to prepare one part properly and know the other well enough to recognise an easy paper.
What each part contains in 2027
| Part | Topics | 2027 change |
|---|---|---|
| B1: Surveying and Mapping | Maps (scale, datum, projections, sheet numbering); Land Surveying (levelling instruments, theodolite, total station and COGO functions, traversing, triangulation, tacheometry); Aerial Photogrammetry (scale, relief displacement, parallax, stereo, DEM) | Gains COGO functions; loses “3-D Model” and “Slope” |
| B2: Image Processing and Analysis | Data quantization and processing (sampling, storage, linear systems, convolution); digital image processing (histograms, scattergrams, covariance and correlation); basic radiometric and geometric corrections; enhancement (spatial, then contrast); transformation (PCA, colour, indices); basic classification and segmentation (supervised, unsupervised, accuracy) | Loses the Fourier transform; gains supervised and unsupervised classification with accuracy analysis |

Our classification of the official GE papers and final keys.
From the official final keys (our count).
The data points one way for a candidate who wants predictability. B1 is the steadier part: three topics, each within two questions of its average, with numericals (NAT) that reward practice and no fear of partial credit. B2 is broader and swings more, and in 2026 more than half its marks were MSQs, where you must pick exactly the right set of options. On the other hand, B2 overlaps Part A: resampling, contrast and covariance questions appear in Part A too. So B2 preparation also earns Part A marks, which B1 preparation does less often.
What GATE does not publish: how many candidates chose each part, or how they scored. So no one can tell you that one part is “scoring”. Anyone who claims so is guessing.
The repeat questions in each part
| Part B1 favourites | Part B2 favourites |
|---|---|
| Relief displacement (2023 Q49; 2024 Q65; 2025 Q54; 2026 Q54) | Convolution and kernels (11 questions, every year) |
| Geoid and orthometric height (2023 Q51, Q59, Q61; 2024 Q59; 2025 Q55; 2026 Q57) | Contrast stretch and histogram equalisation (2023 Q76, Q80; 2024 Q69, Q70, Q84; 2025 Q71; 2026 Q66, Q79) |
| UTM zone (2023 Q63; 2024 Q49; 2025 Q62) | Image storage in bits and bytes (2023 Q69; 2024 Q66, Q82; 2026 Q69) |
| Survey of India sheet numbering (2023 Q52; 2024 Q48; 2025 Q49) | Resampling (2023 Q84; 2024 Q71; 2025 Q66, Q75, Q83; 2026 Q80) |
| Parallax and stereo height (2023 Q64; 2025 Q58; 2026 Q47) | PCA (2024 Q76; 2025 Q70; 2026 Q84) |

B1 or B2? Four questions
What the 2027 syllabus changes mean for the choice
The revision moves both parts, in opposite directions. B2 loses the Fourier transform, which sat inside its largest topic (data quantization and processing, about 6.75 marks a year) and was asked in every paper from 2024 to 2026. It gains supervised and unsupervised classification with accuracy analysis, which the setters had already been asking. The net effect for a B2 candidate (our reading) is a part that is a little less mathematical and a little more about interpreting images and error matrices. B1 gains COGO functions on the total station and loses two photogrammetry words, so a B1 candidate’s preparation is almost unchanged: the traverse and coordinate computations that COGO performs were already the core of land surveying.
The marking rules are the same for both parts, and they matter more than the topic list. An MCQ answered wrongly costs one-third of its marks (one-mark questions) or two-thirds (two-mark questions). MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marks, but an MSQ earns nothing unless you choose exactly the right set of options: there is no partial credit. A part heavy in MSQs, as B2 was in 2026, therefore punishes a half-known topic in a different way from an MCQ-heavy part.
A routine for the hall
Our recommendation, not an official rule. Do Part A first; it is compulsory and worth 55 marks. Then spend five minutes reading the first few one-mark questions of both B parts and count how many you can answer at sight. If your prepared part is at least as good, stay with it. Switch only if the other part is clearly easier for you. Once you have chosen, do not answer questions in the other part: the brochure scores one B part, and time spent on the other is time lost.

Whichever part you choose, map projections and datums sit under both Part A and B1. Try our Map Projections and Distortions quiz.
The ProSyllabus GATE Geomatics library has three topic quizzes today: Map Projections and Distortions and Coordinate Systems and Datums (Part B1 Maps and Part A GNSS ground) and Microwave Remote Sensing Principles (Part A Remote Sensing), each with a worked explanation for every option.
Do I choose GATE GE Part B1 or B2 at registration?
No. The GATE 2027 brochure says the choice of Part B1 or Part B2 can be made during the examination.
Is there a separate rank for B1 and B2 in GATE Geomatics?
No. The brochure states that section-wise scores and ranks are not provided for GE. Everyone gets one GE score and rank.
Which is easier, GATE GE B1 or B2?
GATE publishes no separate B1 or B2 statistics, so no one can say. By our count, B1’s three topics were steadier from 2023 to 2026, while B2’s six topics varied more and B2 was MSQ-heavy in 2026.
What is in GATE GE Part B1?
Surveying and Mapping: maps (scale, datum, projections, sheet numbering), land surveying (levelling instruments, theodolite, total station and COGO, traversing, triangulation) and aerial photogrammetry.
What is in GATE GE Part B2?
Image Processing and Analysis: quantization and processing, digital image processing, basic radiometric and geometric corrections, enhancement, transformation, and basic classification and segmentation with accuracy analysis.
Can I answer both B1 and B2?
You answer Part A plus one B part: 65 questions in all. Prepare one part well and use a few minutes in the hall to check the other.
