GATE EC vs EE vs IN in 2027: Which Paper Should ECE and EEE Students Write?

EC, EE and IN compared on official 2026 numbers — candidates, cut-offs, top-0.1% means — plus syllabus overlap, two-paper rules, the new RA paper, and which PSUs and M.Tech take which paper.

GATE EC vs EE vs IN in 2027: Which Paper Should ECE and EEE Students Write?

Checked 26 September 2026. From the GATE 2026 statistical report, the GATE 2027 brochure and EC/EE/IN/RA syllabi, and the PSU and M.Tech documents cited. Paper-to-job and paper-to-programme mappings change every year — confirm in the current advertisement or admission notice.

An ECE, EEE or instrumentation student can usually write more than one GATE paper, and many write two. The choice matters more than it looks: the same student would face 95,752 others in EC, 65,801 in EE or 12,424 in IN, with different cut-offs, different subjects and — above all — different doors afterwards, because PSUs and M.Tech programmes each name the papers they accept. This guide compares the three on the official 2026 figures and maps each paper to the jobs and programmes that take it.

From the table above.

Read the cut-offs carefully. IN’s 39.8 is not a sign that IN is harder to pass — it is the mean plus one standard deviation of a smaller, stronger field, and it swung from 32.7 to 25.6 to 39.8 in three years. What decides outcomes is rank against the jobs and seats that take the paper, not the qualifying line that every candidate in that paper has to clear. EC has by far the biggest field — registrations doubled from 58,342 in 2023 to 1,15,448 in 2026 — so a given rank is harder to reach in EC than in IN, but EC also has far more programmes and posts that accept it.

Section headings of the official GATE 2027 EC, EE and IN syllabi. The depth within a shared heading differs by paper — compare the full syllabi before relying on overlap.

Five areas appear in all three papers: mathematics, circuits, signals and systems, control, and electronics. What separates them is the rest. EC adds devices and communications; EE adds machines, power systems and power electronics; IN adds measurements, sensors and instrumentation. An ECE student switching to EE has to learn the whole power side; switching to IN means measurements and sensors, a smaller step. Section headings are only a guide — the EC and EE treatments of electromagnetics, for instance, are not identical.

Writing two papers in 2027

ECCS, DA, EE, IN, PH, RA
Papers that accept EC as a secondCS, DA, EE, IN, PH, RA
Fee, one / two papers (regular window)Female/SC/ST/PwD ₹1,000 / ₹2,000; others ₹2,000 / ₹4,000 (extended window: ₹1,500 / ₹2,500 and ₹2,500 / ₹4,500)

GATE 2027 Information Brochure (Table 4; fees) and the two-paper combinations page. Scores are valid for three years.

EC + EE and EC + IN are both allowed, and so is the new EC + RA. Writing two papers roughly doubles the fee (₹4,000 instead of ₹2,000 for general candidates in the regular window) and splits preparation; it pays only when the second paper opens something the first does not — EE for power-sector jobs and power M.Tech programmes, IN for GAIL’s instrumentation route, RA for robotics programmes. The RA paper has a Part B1 “Electrical” option (analog circuits and embedded systems, signals and systems, control) that overlaps EC, but its common Part A adds mechanics, actuators, PLC/CNC and Python.

IN32.7 / 25.6 / 39.8— / 15,608 (2026)

GATE statistical reports 2023–2026. The 2023 EE figure is the one printed against EE in that report’s category table (its summary table swaps the EC and EE rows).

EC’s field has nearly doubled in three years while EE’s grew by about a sixth (our arithmetic). More EC candidates chasing a slower-growing set of EC posts and seats fits the rise in CCMT closing scores for EC programmes in 2026 (the M.Tech guide compares 2025 and 2026), though no document states the cause. IN is the small, volatile paper: its cut-off rose by 14.2 marks in a single year, from 25.6 in 2025 to 39.8 in 2026 (our arithmetic). EE’s moved by less than three marks across the three years.

A simple way to decide

Start from the door, not the paper. List the three or four outcomes you would actually take — a PSU post, an M.Tech specialisation, a particular institute — and look up which GATE paper each one names in its most recent advertisement or admission notice. If they all name EC, write EC and spend the time you would have spent on a second paper on EC’s weaker subjects. If one important target names EE or IN, add it as a second paper and plan the extra syllabus from the overlap table above: for an ECE student, IN adds measurements, sensors and instrumentation; EE adds the whole power side. Two papers mean two three-hour sittings, possibly on different weekends, and a second fee.

A worked example (our reading of the documents in this series): an ECE student whose list is POWERGRID Electronics, NIT VLSI M.Tech and GAIL. The first two name EC; GAIL takes Electronics graduates only through IN. So EC is the main paper, and IN is a second paper worth adding only if GAIL matters enough to spend time on measurements, sensors and industrial instrumentation — the IN sections EC does not cover. If GAIL is a long shot, the same hours spent on EC’s weaker subjects are worth more.

EC, EE, IN or RA? A quick sorter (2027)

From the GATE 2027 brochure (two-paper combinations with EC: CS, DA, EE, IN, PH, RA) and the PSU and M.Tech documents cited in this guide. Always read the specific advertisement or admission notice — the paper each accepts can change year to year.

For most ECE students the answer is EC: it is the paper POWERGRID, NTPC (Electronics), NPCIL and the core-EC M.Tech programmes ask for. EE is the right first paper only if the goal is power — POWERGRID’s electrical posts, Grid-India, NHPC or power-systems programmes. IN is worth writing as a second paper if GAIL or instrumentation programmes are on your list; its smaller field means a good IN score can be a stronger rank than the same effort in EC. Whatever you choose, register before the 5 October regular deadline (or 12 October with the late fee); the brochure allows adding a test paper, with the extra fee, until 21 October 2026.

Practise it, don't just read it

Whichever paper you choose, circuits, signals, control and electronics are shared ground. The GATE EC quizzes cover them.

The ProSyllabus GATE EC library has topic quizzes on diode circuits and clippers, Boolean algebra and Karnaugh maps, transfer functions and block diagrams, signals and systems, Maxwell’s equations, and antennas and propagation — the first quiz is free.

Should an ECE student write GATE EC or EE?

EC for electronics PSUs and VLSI/communication M.Tech; EE only if the target is power-sector jobs or programmes.

Is GATE IN easier than EC?

Its field is far smaller (12,424 appeared in 2026 vs 95,752), but its 2026 cut-off was 39.8; compare ranks and target programmes, not cut-offs.

Can I write GATE EC and EE together in 2027?

Yes — EE is an allowed second paper with EC.

Can ECE students write the GATE Robotics paper?

Yes — RA is a new second-paper option with EC in 2027; its Part B1 overlaps EC.

Which GATE paper does GAIL take for Electronics graduates?

IN, for ET (Instrumentation).

What was the GATE EE cut-off in 2026?

27.7 marks (general).

How many appeared for GATE IN 2026?

12,424 of 15,608 registered.

How long is a GATE score valid?

Three years.
