Updates as of September 22, 2026
Southern Railway declared 27 Assistant Engineer vacancies in the Civil Engineering department under notification G25049 at Pay Matrix Level 8: 22 unreserved, three for Scheduled Castes and two for Scheduled Tribes, with one post carrying horizontal reservation for a person with benchmark disability under clause c, locomotor disability. This is the largest single-post count among the eight Group B notifications that zone issued.
Southern Railway notification G25049The AEN notification sets out the paper in full: a single objective paper of three hours with 175 questions of which 150 are to be attempted, carrying 150 marks. The technical or professional portion is 85 questions for 80 marks, general knowledge with official language policy is 55 questions for 40 marks, and establishment and financial rules is 35 questions for 30 marks. One mark per correct answer, one-third deducted per wrong answer.
Southern Railway notification G25049AEN was the post least affected by normalisation in the 2026 centralised test. A post-wise analysis of the two sittings reports AEN averages of 58.59 and 57.29 out of 150 across 2,605 and 2,621 candidates, a gap of 1.30 marks described as negligible, against 13.42 for AOM. This comes from a specialist departmental blog, not from a Board release.
Railway Accounts Department Examinations blog (sole source)Eligibility rests on grade, not on a civil engineering degree. The notification opens AEN to non-ministerial Group C staff of the Civil Engineering department holding a post in Level 6 or above, with five years of regular non-fortuitous service in Level 6, Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400, and above as on 1 January 2025, and five completed years in the current seniority unit. No educational qualification is prescribed.
Southern Railway notification G25049The AEN professional syllabus in force is the one issued with Railway Board letter E(GP)2022/2/4 of 7 November 2022 for 70 per cent selections and 30 per cent LDCEs, applicable from 1 January 2023, and the same letter moved the examination to a centralised computer based multiple choice format across all departments with organised services.
RailNewsCenter, reproducing the AEN syllabus under E(GP)2022/2/4The AEN selection, stage by stage
| Stage | Marks | Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Written CCBT, technical or professional portion | 80 marks from 85 questions | Part of the single 150-mark paper; no separate sectional minimum stated |
| Written CCBT, general knowledge and official language policy | 40 marks from 55 questions | Same paper, same three hours |
| Written CCBT, establishment and financial rules | 30 marks from 35 questions | Same paper; 175 questions offered, 150 to be attempted |
| Written total | 150 marks | 90 marks to qualify; one-third deducted for each wrong answer |
| Viva-voce and record of service | 25 marks each, 50 in all | 30 marks combined to qualify, of which at least 15 must come from record of service |
| Medical examination | Not marked | Under IRMM para 530(a), taken by qualified candidates before the viva-voce |
The written paper is not the whole selection and the written qualifying mark is not a pass mark in the ordinary sense: 90 out of 150 is 60 per cent, and it is a floor rather than a target in a competitive panel. The record of service condition is the one candidates underestimate, because a minimum of 15 of the 25 record-of-service marks is required independently, so a strong written score cannot compensate for a poor service record.

The first five rows are AEN-specific and come from Southern Railway's own notification, which fixed its own eligibility list and pre-selection training dates; the last three are the centralised calendar common to all eight posts in the examination. Other zones ran their Civil notifications on different dates, so the AEN window in another zone is not the Southern Railway window.
What this means for your preparation
Most AEN candidates prepare as though the 80 technical marks decide the panel. They do not decide it on their own. Seventy of the 150 written marks sit outside the professional portion, in general knowledge with official language policy and in establishment and financial rules, and a further 50 marks sit in viva-voce and record of service with their own separate qualifying floor. The technical portion is the largest single block, not a majority.
The civil syllabus is two-thirds railway, one-third classroom
Part A of the AEN professional syllabus is general civil engineering: surveying with base lines, traverses and bearings and instruments from auto level and theodolite to total station, DGPS and LIDAR; stress, strain and bending moment; RCC by working stress and limit state and steel design to IRS codes; construction materials and mix design; soils, bearing capacity and open, well and pile foundations; and hydrology, open channel flow, culvert and bridge waterway estimation. Part B is railway-specific and much longer: alignment and ruling gradients with grade compensation for curves, track structure, alumino-thermit and flash-butt welding, long welded rails and tolerances, bridge inspection and numerical rating, girder replacement, guide bunds and spurs, tunnels, buildings, water supply and sewerage, land management, estimates and contracts.
Track machines and contracts are the quiet scoring areas
Two heads in the AEN syllabus are written out in unusual detail and are commonly underprepared by candidates who came up through permanent way gangs. The first is track machines: tamping machine working with four-point and three-point lining, ballast cleaning, rail grinding, the dynamic track stabiliser, machine maintenance schedules and workshop functions. The second is plans, estimates and contracts: RDSO drawing standards, types of estimate, schedules of rates, tender procedure and contract types, measurement books and bill processing, and planning by activity, milestone, bar chart and critical path network. Both are objective-friendly subjects with definite answers, unlike bridge rehabilitation, where questions tend to be judgement-heavy and harder to bank.
Normalisation will not move an AEN candidate much
Because the paper ran on 24 and 31 May 2026 with half of each department on each date, scores are normalised. For AEN the reported effect is close to nil. The post-wise analysis gives averages of 58.59 and 57.29 out of 150 across 2,605 and 2,621 candidates, a gap of 1.30 marks, and describes the two AEN sittings as almost identical in difficulty. Contrast AOM at 13.42. The practical consequence is that an AEN candidate can read their raw mark as roughly their standing, which candidates in the high-gap departments cannot. These figures are from a specialist departmental blog and are reported rather than officially confirmed.
The eligibility test is grade and unit, not qualification
The AEN notification prescribes no educational qualification. What it prescribes is a substantive non-ministerial Group C post in the Civil Engineering department in Level 6 or above, five years of regular non-fortuitous service in Level 6 and above as on 1 January 2025, five completed years in the present seniority unit as on that date, and lien and seniority in the relevant cadre of the zone. Staff officiating in Level 6 on an adhoc basis are ineligible, as are staff whose Level 6 came from MACP financial upgradation rather than from a functional promotion. A civil engineering degree is neither required nor credited.
Level 8 now, and what the rules allow after it
AEN is a Pay Matrix Level 8 post, so a successful candidate from Level 6 moves two levels on one examination. The onward step is governed by the Indian Railway Management Service (Group A) Rules 2022, under which 50 per cent of Junior Time Scale vacancies, Level 10 and Rs 56,100 to 1,77,500, are filled by promotion through selection from Group B officers in Level 8 or Level 9 who have a minimum of three years regular service in the grade; the remaining half goes to direct recruits through the Civil Services Examination. Senior Time Scale is Level 11. Clearing the LDCE therefore places a Civil Group C employee on the promotional half of the Group A ladder.
Common questions
What is the qualifying mark for the railway AEN LDCE written paper?
Ninety marks out of 150, per Southern Railway's AEN notification. The paper is a single objective CCBT of three hours with 175 questions offered and 150 to be attempted, split as 85 questions for 80 technical marks, 55 for 40 marks of general knowledge and official language policy, and 35 for 30 marks of establishment and financial rules. One mark is given for a correct answer and one-third deducted for a wrong one. Qualifying candidates then face a medical examination under IRMM para 530(a) before the viva-voce.
Do I need a civil engineering degree for the AEN 30 per cent LDCE?
No. The notification prescribes no educational qualification. It requires a substantive non-ministerial Group C post in the Civil Engineering department in Level 6, Rs 35,400 to 1,12,400, or above, five years of regular non-fortuitous service in that grade as on 1 January 2025, and five completed years in the current seniority unit. Candidates holding Level 6 on an adhoc basis, and those whose Level 6 came through MACP financial upgradation, are expressly excluded whatever their qualification.
How many marks are viva-voce and record of service worth for AEN?
Twenty-five marks each, 50 in all, on top of the 150-mark written paper. They are qualified jointly: 30 marks are needed from the two together, but at least 15 of those must come from the record of service component. That independent floor is why a confident performance at the viva cannot rescue a weak service record. The medical examination sits between the written result and the viva and is a fitness test rather than a marked stage.
How many AEN vacancies were advertised in this LDCE cycle?
Counts are zonal. Southern Railway advertised 27 AEN posts under notification G25049 at Level 8: 22 unreserved, three Scheduled Caste and two Scheduled Tribe, with one post under horizontal reservation for a person with benchmark disability, clause c, locomotor disability. That was the largest of the eight post-wise counts in that zone. Every other zonal railway issued its own Civil Engineering notification with its own figure, so a candidate's operative number is their own zone's.
What does the AEN technical syllabus cover beyond permanent way?
A great deal. Alongside track structure, welding of rails, long welded rails and track machines, the syllabus covers bridge maintenance and inspection with numerical rating, rehabilitation and girder replacement, river training with guide bunds, spurs and marginal bunds, tunnels and deep cuttings, station buildings and colonies, water supply distribution and residual pressure, sewage disposal and rainwater harvesting, land acquisition, leasing and encroachment, plans and estimates to RDSO standards, and contracts including tendering, measurement books and critical path planning. Part A adds general civil engineering: surveying, structural design, materials, soils and hydraulics.
Is my AEN raw score affected much by normalisation between the 24 and 31 May sittings?
Reportedly very little. A post-wise analysis of the two dates gives AEN averages of 58.59 and 57.29 out of 150 across 2,605 and 2,621 candidates, a gap of 1.30 marks, the second smallest of the eight posts after ASTE. The same analysis puts AOM and ACM above 13 marks. The source is a specialist departmental blog rather than an official Board release, so treat the figures as reported; but on them, an AEN raw score is a fair proxy for standing.
