Updates as of September 22, 2026

Nursing Manthra, a licensing guidance site, reports that from 1 January 2026 the Department of Healthcare Professions requires a verification report even from applicants holding an exemption examination such as NCLEX, USMLE or PLAB. Previously an exemption qualification could carry more of the file on its own. This is the single most consequential recent change for Indian nurses planning the Qatar route.

Nursing Manthra (consultancy)

The same source reports that from 1 August 2025 certificates of good standing can no longer be submitted by email or PO Box, and that primary source verification reports serve as the approved alternative. DHP's own nurse guidelines confirm the underlying principle, stating that verification by the verification companies replaces attestation of certificates, and that good standing is required at the licensing stage.

DHP MOPH Guidelines for Nurses (official)

Prometric's own Qatar DHP page confirms the exam mechanics: most qualifying examinations are 150 multiple-choice questions over three hours, with cut scores of 50 per cent for nursing and allied health, 60 per cent for general practitioners, dentists and pharmacists, and 65 per cent for specialists. Exams may be taken at a test centre or by remote proctoring across 58 categories.

Prometric (official test provider)

DHP's Guidelines for Nurses set the qualification and experience bar by category: a registered general nurse needs a four-year bachelor's degree or a diploma or associate degree, with two years of clinical practice for bachelor's and diploma holders and three years for associate degree holders, and must sit the Prometric exam. Clinical nurse specialists, nurse educators, nurse practitioners and assistant nurses are recorded as not requiring the exam.

The DHP guidelines also set the processing structure: registration and evaluation in 15 working days, an optional temporary licence in 5 working days valid six months and non-renewable, and licensing in 10 working days subject to a certificate of good standing and medical fitness clearance. The preliminary evaluation itself is valid for six months only.

Unusually for the Gulf, most of this table comes from the regulator and its named test provider rather than from coaching sites. The exam applies to the registered general nurse title; several senior nursing titles are recorded in DHP's guidelines as not requiring it, which is worth checking before booking anything.

Qatar publishes no examination calendar, only service turnaround times. Those turnarounds are working-day service levels for DHP's own processing and exclude the verification wait, which runs separately and is the longest element for most Indian applicants.

What this means for your preparation

The mistake that costs most time in Qatar is not the exam. It is the six-month clock on the preliminary evaluation, combined with an employer-driven process. The evaluation is valid for six months and the temporary licence for six months, non-renewable, so a candidate who clears the paperwork before an offer is settled can watch the whole file expire and start again.

Check whether your title even needs the exam

DHP's Guidelines for Nurses record the Prometric examination as required for the registered general nurse and as not required for the clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, assistant nurse and nurse practitioner. Those senior titles carry their own bars instead: a clinical nurse specialist needs registered general nurse credentials plus a master's or one-year postgraduate qualification, three years post-registration and one year in the specialty. A nurse educator needs three years clinical and one year as an educator, or five plus two without a postgraduate degree. If your target post matches one of those definitions, the correct first step is to argue the title, not to buy a question bank.

The NCLEX exemption no longer carries the file alone

DHP's guidelines exempt NCLEX holders from the Prometric examination where the exam was completed within the previous five years. Nursing Manthra reports that from 1 January 2026 DHP nevertheless requires a verification report for consideration even when an exemption examination such as NCLEX, USMLE or PLAB applies. Read together, the exemption survives but its administrative shortcut does not: verification runs regardless. Indian nurses who took NCLEX specifically to skip Gulf Prometric papers should recost the Qatar route accordingly, and should check the five-year window against their actual result date rather than their registration date.

Fifty per cent is the lowest bar in the region, and it shows

Prometric's own page puts nursing and allied health at a 50 per cent cut score on a 150-question, three-hour paper, against 60 per cent for pharmacists and dentists and 65 per cent for specialists. Three hours across 150 items is 72 seconds per question, more generous than the two hours forty-five minutes reported for the MoHAP nursing paper in the UAE. The combination of a low threshold and comfortable pacing means failure is usually a scope problem rather than a speed problem: candidates lose on content outside their daily practice. Prepare breadth first and accept that depth beyond the threshold earns nothing.

Sequence: verification, exam, evaluation, licence

Neelim describes the order as qualifications, then the Prometric exam, then the DHP application with primary source verification, and puts the end-to-end duration at eight to fourteen weeks including verification. DHP's own guidelines then layer service levels on top: 15 working days for registration and evaluation, 10 for licensing, with an optional 5-day temporary licence valid six months. Verification replaces certificate attestation entirely, which removes a step Indian applicants often still budget for. Good standing is required at the licensing stage, not at registration, and DHP directs applicants to follow up its receipt through a dedicated departmental mailbox.

Employer sponsorship is structural, not a formality

The Qatar route differs from the UAE in that the file is largely employer-driven: DHP's guidelines describe the employer reviewing documents at the registration and evaluation stage, and Neelim states employment sponsorship is required, typically through employers such as Hamad Medical Corporation or Sidra Medicine. That has a scheduling consequence. Because the preliminary evaluation lapses after six months and the temporary licence cannot be renewed, starting the paperwork speculatively, without a recruiter or an offer in progress, wastes both the fee and the window. Line the offer up first, then let the employer drive registration.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is QCHP still the regulator, or is it DHP now?

The licensing function sits with the Department of Healthcare Professions within Qatar's Ministry of Public Health, whose Registration and Licensing Section regulates physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and allied practitioners, handles registration, licence issue and renewal, credential verification and academic equivalency, and maintains the practitioner register. The QCHP name remains in wide use among recruiters and coaching sites, and Prometric lists the examination under the Department of Healthcare Professions, Ministry of Public Health. Treat the two names as referring to the same pathway, but use the DHP portal and documents as the source of record.

How many questions is the Qatar nursing Prometric exam?

Prometric's own Qatar DHP page states that most exams in this programme are 150 multiple-choice questions over three hours, with some specialty papers varying slightly, for example the dietician exam at 160 questions over three hours ten minutes. The nursing cut score is 50 per cent, against 60 per cent for general practitioners, dentists and pharmacists and 65 per cent for specialist physicians and dental specialists. Sittings may be taken at a Prometric test centre or by remote proctoring. This is the test provider's own published description.

What experience do I need as a registered general nurse?

DHP's Guidelines for Nurses require a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing, or a diploma or associate degree, with two years of clinical practice for bachelor's and diploma holders and three years for associate degree holders. The Prometric examination is required for this title. An assistant nurse needs a nursing diploma of eighteen months to two years plus two years post-licensing experience, and is recorded as not requiring the exam. Qatar has not been reported to relax its entry experience rule in the way the UAE's third PQR version is reported to have done for entry-grade nurses.

Do I still need a certificate of good standing?

Yes, at the licensing stage. DHP's guidelines require a certificate of good standing together with medical fitness clearance for the licensing step, which carries a ten working day service level, and direct applicants to follow up its receipt through the department's good standing mailbox. Nursing Manthra reports that from 1 August 2025 the certificate can no longer be submitted by email or PO Box, with primary source verification reports serving as the approved alternative. DHP's own guidelines state that verification by the verification companies replaces attestation of certificates.

How long does the whole QCHP process take?

Neelim puts it at eight to fourteen weeks including primary source verification, with the order running qualifications, Prometric exam, then DHP application with verification. DHP's published service levels are 15 working days for registration and evaluation, 5 working days for an optional temporary licence and 10 working days for licensing. Those service levels apply only to DHP's own handling and sit on top of the verification wait, which is the longest and least predictable element and depends on how quickly your university and past employers respond.

How long does my evaluation stay valid?

DHP's guidelines state the preliminary evaluation is valid for six months only, and that the optional temporary licence is also valid for six months and is non-renewable. Nursing Manthra separately reports a three-year validity for the qualifying examination result and a preliminary evaluation fee of 100 Qatari riyals. The practical point is that the exam result outlasts the evaluation by a wide margin, so the paperwork, not the exam, is what expires first if an employment offer takes longer than expected to close.
