Checked 25 September 2026. From DHP’s Qualifying Examination page, the nurse and midwife blueprint and references (2023) and Prometric’s DHP page, all read on 25 September 2026. No 2025–26 circular changed the nursing exam’s format, pass mark or attempts.
Qatar’s nurses are licensed by the Ministry of Public Health’s Department of Healthcare Professions (DHP) — the body many nurses still call QCHP, its former name. Before licensing, a Registered General Nurse or Registered Midwife sits a Prometric qualifying exam: 150 multiple-choice questions with a 50% cut score. That figure matters, because several nurse-recruitment sites print 60% or “60–65%”, which is the pass mark for doctors, dentists and pharmacists. This guide sets out the exam from DHP’s own pages — format, blueprint, the books DHP lists — and what DHP does not publish.
DHP Qualifying Examination page; blueprint (2023); Prometric.
Where other pages get this wrong
The Qatar Registered General Nurse and Registered Midwife exams have a 50% cut score.
Commonly published instead: “Pass mark 60% (approximately 90 of 150)” and “between 60% and 65%”.
DHP Qualifying Examination page: nurses, midwives and allied health pass at 50%; physicians, GPs, dentists and pharmacists at 60–65%. The blueprint and Prometric’s DHP page give the same 50%.

| Delivery | Prometric test centres; no remote option | Same |
| Attempts | 5, at any gap; one more may be granted with justification | Same |
| Fee | USD 244 for exams registered from 1 Jan 2026 | Same |
DHP Qualifying Examination page; blueprint and references; Prometric SCHQ2 page; circular DHP/2024/10 (fee); MOPH Qualifying Examination Policy (extra attempt). Prometric offers remote testing for DHP only for the Dietician exam.
Two details are genuinely unclear. The duration is printed as 3 hours on DHP’s exam page and Prometric’s page, but as “150 MCQs, 3 ½ hours” in the blueprint document; pace for the shorter figure — 3 hours, about 72 seconds a question — and check the duration on your Prometric booking confirmation. And DHP does not say whether scores are raw or scaled, whether wrong answers are penalised, or in which language the exam is set. On a raw count, 50% of 150 is 75 correct answers — but that is arithmetic, not a DHP statement.

Would this mock score pass the Qatar nursing exam?
DHP: Registered General Nurse and Registered Midwife exams, 150 MCQs, cut score 50%. DHP does not say whether scores are raw or scaled, or whether wrong answers are penalised; this check assumes raw marks with no penalty.
The Registered General Nurse blueprint
| Content area | Items | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing Fundamentals | 30 | 20.0% |
| Adult Nursing | 61 | 40.7% |
| Maternal–Child Nursing | 44 | 29.3% |
| Unit Management and Leadership | 15 | 10.0% |
| Total | 150 | 100% |
DHP Qualifying Examination Blueprint, Registered General Nurse (2023). Shares are our arithmetic.
Adult nursing alone is 61 questions — two in every five. Maternal–child nursing is the second block at 44, which surprises nurses who have spent years on adult wards and last studied obstetrics and paediatrics in college. Fundamentals is 30 questions and leadership 15. A study plan that simply mirrors the blueprint puts roughly 40% of the time on adult nursing and 30% on maternal–child.
The Registered Midwife blueprint
| Content area | Items |
|---|---|
| Intrapartum Care | 60 |
| Postpartum Care | 22 |
| Antepartum Care | 15 |
| Newborn Care | 8 |
| Counselling and Education | 8 |
| Patient Safety | 8 |
| Professionalism and Ethics | 8 |
| Antenatal Care | 7 |
| Gynecological Care | 7 |
| Pharmacology in Midwifery | 7 |
DHP blueprint, Registered Midwife. The document lists “Antenatal Care” (7) and “Antepartum Care” (15) as separate areas, as printed. Intrapartum care alone is 40% of the exam (our arithmetic).
The books DHP names
| Area | References listed for RGN |
|---|---|
| Fundamentals | Kozier & Erb’s Fundamentals; Taylor’s skill checklists; Jarvis, Physical Examination; Dudek, Nutrition Essentials; Mosby’s Pharmacology in Nursing; Allender, Community Health Nursing |
| Adult | Lewis, Medical-Surgical Nursing (10e); Brunner & Suddarth; Morton, Critical Care Nursing (9e); Stuart, Psychiatric Nursing (10e); Stanhope & Lancaster |
| Maternal–child | Murray & McKinney; Wong’s |
| Leadership | Sullivan (9e, 2017) |
| Patient safety | ANA Code of Ethics; SCFHS Ethics for Health Professionals booklet; Sherwood & Barnsteiner (2017) |
| Clinical skills | Perry & Potter, Clinical Nursing Skills (9e); Mosby’s Clinical Nursing (5e) |
DHP Qualifying Examination References, Registered General Nurse; “latest edition” unless an edition is given. The midwife list includes Mayes’ Midwifery, CTG interpretation and NCLEX-style maternal–newborn review books.
The list is a guide to the level and the source of truth, not a reading list to finish. The practical use is to settle disputes: when two question banks give different answers on a procedure, the textbook DHP names is the one the exam is written from. The patient-safety section is worth noting too — it has no row of its own in the blueprint, so those questions most likely sit inside the four main areas.
What gets repeated wrongly
| Claim seen online | What DHP says |
|---|---|
| Pass mark 60% (about 90 of 150), or 60–65% | 50% for nurses and midwives; 60–65% is for doctors, dentists and pharmacists |
| Question count, time and pass mark are not published | All published on DHP’s exam page and Prometric’s page |
| Exam fee QAR 900 or “USD 200–250” | USD 244 from 1 Jan 2026 (circular DHP/2024/10); QAR 900 is a verification package price |
| Wait six months after three failures | Five attempts “whatever the gap”; the six-month wait was a 2015 rule |
| Master’s-degree nurses are exempt | Listed in the 2019 policy (§7.3.3), but circular DHP/2025/24 limits exemptions to Qataris, their children and Qatar graduates — confirm with DHP |
Claims checked on 25 September 2026 against DHP’s exam page, circulars and exam policy; the sites are listed in the sources.
The midwife reading list
For the Registered Midwife exam DHP lists a separate set of references: Green’s Maternal Newborn Nursing Care Plans, Brucker and King’s Pharmacology for Women’s Health, Schuiling and Likis’s Women’s Gynecologic Health, a text on CTG interpretation and fetal heart monitoring, Mayes’ Midwifery, two NCLEX-style maternal–newborn review books, and handbooks on professionalism, ethics and patient safety. With intrapartum care worth 60 of 150 questions, labour management, fetal monitoring and obstetric emergencies deserve most of a midwife’s time.
Booking the exam
DHP sends candidates to Prometric’s online booking page for the State of Qatar DHP exams. DHP names one test centre — in Doha, at the Al Emadi Business Center on C Ring Road — and Prometric’s own “Locate” search lists others. Whether the Qatar nursing exam can be taken at Prometric centres in India could not be confirmed from any official page, because Prometric’s seat search sits behind a CAPTCHA; check it yourself on Prometric’s site before planning travel. Whether DHP must issue an eligibility number before booking is also not stated by DHP.
