Checked 25 September 2026. From DHP’s Guidelines for Nurses (Jan 2024) as updated by circulars DHP/2025/01, DHP/2025/24 and DHP/2026/29, and the MOPH Work Experience Policy. DHP never names Indian courses; our mapping is labelled.
Qatar licenses nurses by scope of practice, and each scope has its own education and experience rule. For a nurse trained in India the question is which DHP title their qualification maps to — and the answer changed twice recently: shorter diplomas became “Nurse Technician” in February 2025, and the Nurse Educator criteria were rewritten in August 2026. This guide sets out DHP’s rules for each nursing and midwifery title, how experience is counted, and how Indian qualifications are likely to be read, with a chooser.
DHP Guidelines for Nurses; circular DHP/2025/01.
Where other pages get this wrong
A three-year nursing diploma after 12 years of school is accepted for Registered General Nurse in Qatar, alongside a four-year bachelor’s.
Commonly published instead: Summaries that say a Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
DHP Guidelines for Nurses, Table 1: “Bachelor’s Degree in nursing (duration: 4 years)” or “Diploma in nursing (duration: 3 years after graduation from 12 years of high school)”.

Which Qatar nursing title fits my qualification?
DHP Guidelines for Nurses (Table 1), updated by circulars DHP/2025/01 (Nurse and Midwife Technician) and DHP/2026/29 (Nurse Educator). DHP never names Indian courses: matching GNM, B.Sc. and ANM to DHP’s wording is our reading, and DHP decides at evaluation. Experience must be backed by valid registration; a waiver of one month may be applied where the requirement is under three years (MOPH Work Experience Policy).
The other nursing and midwifery titles
| Title | Education | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Registered Midwife | Bachelor’s in midwifery; or nursing bachelor’s + recognised post-graduate midwifery programme | 3 years as a midwife after registration |
| Nurse Technician (since 16 Feb 2025) | 18-month–2-year nursing diploma after 12 years of school; or 3-year diploma after 9 years of schooling | 1 year as Nurse Technician (Assistant) after registration |
| Midwife Technician (since 16 Feb 2025) | At least 18 months of midwifery education after high school | 1 year after registration |
| Clinical Nurse Specialist | RGN requirements + master’s in the specialty (or 1-year postgraduate degree) | 3 years after RGN registration + 1 year in the specialty after the master’s |
| Nurse Practitioner | RGN requirements + master’s or PhD | 3 years after RGN registration + 2 years in the specialty; NP licence after the degree |
| Nurse Educator (since 17 Aug 2026) | RGN requirements + clinical master’s in nursing | 3 years as RGN + 2 years as nurse educator after the master’s |
| Licensed Practical Nurse | Accredited 2-year LPN programme, or 2-year Diploma in Practical Nursing | 2 years as LPN |
DHP Guidelines for Nurses (Jan 2024), updated by DHP/2025/01 (Nurse and Midwife Technician replace Assistant Nurse and Assistant Midwife; existing licences converted) and DHP/2026/29 (Nurse Educator). Only the RGN and RM exams appear on DHP’s exam page.
The “Assistant Nurse” title with two years’ experience that older guides describe no longer exists. Since circular DHP/2025/01, diplomas of 18 months to two years lead to Nurse Technician (or Midwife Technician), with one year of post-registration experience. The criteria say the candidate must “pass the DHP licensing examination (if applicable), unless exempted”, but no Nurse Technician exam appears on DHP’s or Prometric’s exam lists — ask DHP what applies when you apply.
Titles with no exam in the scope table
DHP’s scope table marks the Prometric exam “not required” for Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Midwife Specialist and Licensed Practical Nurse. That is less generous than it looks: the three specialist titles all require the candidate to “meet the requirements” of a Registered General Nurse or Midwife first — which include the exam — and the 2026 Nurse Educator criteria say “passing the DHP licensing examination (if applicable), unless exempted”. Whether an overseas M.Sc. nurse applying directly as a specialist must sit the RGN exam is not stated; plan on sitting it.
Rules that apply only to Qatar residents
| Rule | What DHP says |
|---|---|
| Spouses and children of Qatar residents (family residence) | Nursing needs 1 year of direct clinical experience, gained under a valid licence after DHP approval |
| Qataris and children of Qatari women | Exempt from the experience requirement and the exam |
| Work under Supervision (training) | For Qatari nationals, equivalents or family-residence holders only |
| Nurse Trainee title | Being closed: no new applications once the supervision route is online |
Circulars DHP/2025/24 (§2.2 and §3) and DHP/2024/20. None of these routes is open to a nurse recruited from India.
How Indian qualifications are likely to map
| Indian qualification | Likely DHP title | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| B.Sc. Nursing (4 years) | Registered General Nurse | Matches “Bachelor’s (4 years)” |
| GNM (3-year diploma after Class 12) | Registered General Nurse | Matches “Diploma, 3 years after 12 years of school”; a GNM entered after Class 10 may instead fall under the Nurse Technician rule (3-year diploma after 9 years of schooling) |
| GNM + Post Basic B.Sc. | Registered General Nurse | Qualifies on the GNM route; DHP does not say whether P.B. B.Sc. counts as the 4-year bachelor’s |
| M.Sc. Nursing | RGN; specialist titles need extra years | Plan to sit the RGN exam |
| ANM (about 2 years) | Nurse Technician or Midwife Technician | Not RGN |
| RN-RM (Indian midwifery registration) | Registered Midwife only if the education rule is met | DHP does not say whether Indian midwifery training counts |
Our reading of DHP’s wording — DHP never names Indian courses. DHP decides at evaluation, after primary-source verification of the certificates.
How experience is counted
Experience only counts if it comes with valid registration or licences covering those years. MOPH’s Work Experience Policy adds several practical rules: observership is not clinical experience; part-time experience is accepted and counted like full-time; for professions other than medicine and dentistry an internship counts if it was not part of the course; and where the required experience is under three years, a one-month waiver may be applied (two months if three years or more). DHP says applications short on experience are “evaluated on a case-by-case basis”, but its evaluation flow chart rejects overseas applicants who lack experience — and the supervised-training route to make it up is for Qatari nationals and family-residence holders only.
| Situation | Counts? |
|---|---|
| Internship during the course | No (it is part of the programme) |
| Internship after the course | Yes, for nurses |
| Part-time work | Yes, counted like full-time |
| Observership | No |
| Years without valid registration | No |
MOPH Work Experience Policy §6; DHP Guidelines for Nurses p.3.
A long gap since your last job
DHP applies its Break in Practice policy to nurses: a gap under two years needs nothing; two to four years needs three months of supervised practice; four to seven years, six months; seven to ten years, a year; and more than ten years means the nurse is “not eligible to be registered”. DHP’s nurse evaluation flow chart tells overseas applicants short of experience to train first, and the in-Qatar supervision route is for residents only — so in practice the supervised period is completed before applying (our reading). Our guide on renewal and gaps has a calculator for this.
Things DHP does not ask for
No English-language test (IELTS or OET) appears in DHP’s nurse guidelines or the 2025–26 nursing circulars. There is no age limit in the nursing criteria. And since September 2024, a nurse does not need a Qatar employer to apply for evaluation — only for the licence itself, which requires a residence permit sponsored by the employer.
Practise it, don't just read it
Once the paperwork is settled, the exam is the step you control. Our Qatar nursing quizzes follow the blueprint’s areas.
The ProSyllabus Qatar nursing library has topic quizzes on fundamentals, medical-surgical, pharmacology, maternal and newborn, paediatric and critical-care nursing, infection control and professional practice — the first quiz is free.
