Checked 25 September 2026. From DHP’s CPD Cycle Policy and FAQs, the Guidelines for Nurses, circular DHP/2024/22 (renewal and the Removal/Restoration policy), circular 14/2021 (break in practice) and DHP processing times.
A Qatar nursing licence is valid for two years (MOPH licensing service), and keeping it is its own set of rules: continuing professional development credits every year, a renewal the nurse now files personally, and a strict timetable once a licence expires. The same body of rules decides what a nurse returning after a career break must do. This guide gathers DHP’s rules on CPD, renewal, gaps in practice and lapsed licences, with calculators for each.

Where other pages get this wrong
Since circular DHP/2024/22, practitioners renew their own licences — facilities “will no longer be able to submit renewal requests on behalf of healthcare practitioners”.
Commonly published instead: Guides that say the hospital renews the nurse’s licence.

CPD: the credit rules
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Every year | At least 40 CPD credits |
| Every 2-year cycle | At least 80 credits |
| Category 1 (accredited group learning) | At least 40 credits per cycle |
| Categories 2 and 3 (self-directed; assessment) | At least 40 credits across them per cycle |
| Cycle | Two years, aligned with the licensure date |
| Submission | Up to 3 months before expiry; no carry-over between cycles |
DHP Accreditation Section, CPD Cycle Policy §§2–3, and FAQs for healthcare practitioners. The policy applies to all practitioners; no nurse-specific rule was found.
The rule that catches people is the category split. A nurse with 80 credits from online self-study has the total but not the 40 Category 1 credits from accredited group learning, and the renewal portal “will not allow practitioners to apply for renewal” until the record is compliant. Plan the accredited sessions early in each cycle, and remember that credits do not carry over.
CPD cycle tracker (suggested pacing, not a DHP rule)
The rule is per cycle: 80 credits with at least 40 in Category 1, and at least 40 each year. This tracker spreads that evenly; other splits are compliant too.

| Category | Name in the policy | Minimum per cycle |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Accredited group learning | 40 credits |
| 2 | Self-directed learning | Together with Category 3: 40 credits |
| 3 | Assessment | Together with Category 2: 40 credits |
DHP CPD Cycle Policy §§2–3. Check each activity’s category in the DHP system before relying on it.
A simple way to stay safe is to treat each year as its own target: 20 Category 1 credits and 20 from Categories 2 and 3 every twelve months gives the 40 a year and 80 a cycle the policy asks for, with the split right. Because credits cannot be carried into the next cycle, extra credits earned late in a cycle are wasted rather than banked. This pacing is our suggestion; the policy sets only the minimums.
Renewal
Renewal is filed by the practitioner on DHP’s portal once the CPD record is compliant, with a passport, residence ID (employer-sponsored, or a family residence ID with the employer’s letter of intent), photograph, a medical report under DHP’s health-fitness policy, a CPR course (unless the facility holds a DHP “Code Blue Team” approval) and an employment letter. DHP processes a renewal in seven working days. No exam is needed at renewal. Government-sector licences have been renewed automatically from 1 October 2024 on CPD compliance, with a renewal request at the end of the fourth year.
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Who files | The practitioner (since DHP/2024/22) |
| Blocked until | CPD compliance |
| Documents | Passport, residence ID, photo, medical report, CPR course, employment letter |
| Processing | 7 working days |
| Exam | Not required |

If a licence expires
| Time since expiry | Status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Under 3 months | Inactive (Expired) | Renew directly |
| 3 months to 5 years | Inactive (Automatically Removed) | Apply for restoration and renewal (DHP processing time for restoration: 15 working days) |
| Over 5 years | Inactive (Permanently Removed) | Cannot be restored |
Removal and Restoration policy attached to circular DHP/2024/22; DHP processing times. Practising on an expired licence is “a legal violation”.
My Qatar licence expired — what is its status?
Removal and Restoration policy attached to circular DHP/2024/22: under 3 months — “Inactive (Expired)”, renew directly; 3 months to 5 years — “Inactive (Automatically Removed)”, apply for restoration and renewal; over 5 years — “Inactive (Permanently Removed)”, cannot be restored. Practising on an expired licence is “a legal violation”.
The five-year line matters for nurses who leave Qatar for a while. A licence that can still be restored — within five years — also means no new exam: the exam policy says there is no re-sit if the practitioner left Qatar within five years and the licence can be restored. After five years the licence is gone, and returning means starting again as a new applicant.
Returning to Qatar: which rule applies
| Situation | What applies |
|---|---|
| Left Qatar, licence expired under 3 months ago | Renew directly; no exam |
| Left Qatar, licence expired 3 months to 5 years ago | Restoration and renewal; no exam; break-in-practice rules may apply if you stopped nursing |
| Licence expired more than 5 years ago | Permanently removed; apply as a new applicant |
| Kept nursing abroad after leaving | No break-in-practice requirement for the time you practised |
| Stopped nursing for 2 years or more | Supervised practice by length of the break; over 10 years not eligible |
Our summary combining the Removal/Restoration policy (DHP/2024/22), the exam policy notes and circular 14/2021; the individual rules are cited in the sections above and below.
Working while the licence is lapsed
DHP’s Removal and Restoration policy calls practising on an expired licence “a legal violation”. The practical risk is the gap between expiry and a completed renewal: a licence that expires while CPD credits are still being logged is inactive from the expiry date, whatever the reason. Submitting credits during the three months before expiry — the window the CPD FAQs allow — and filing the renewal as soon as the record is compliant avoids that gap. Renewal itself takes seven working days, so it should not be left to the final week.
Gaps in practice
| Break from practice | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Under 2 years | None |
| 2 to under 4 years | 3 months of full-time supervised practice or clinical attachment |
| 4 to under 7 years | 6 months |
| More than 7 to 10 years | 1 year (exactly 7 years is not covered by the table) |
| More than 10 years | “Not eligible to be registered” |
Circular 14/2021, Break in Practice policy, Table 1 (nurses and midwives). The circular is addressed to the government sector; DHP’s nurse guidelines apply it to all applicants.
Break in practice: what does DHP require?
Circular 14/2021, Break in Practice policy, Table 1 (nurses and midwives): under 2 years — nothing; 2 to under 4 years — 3 months’ full-time supervised practice or clinical attachment; 4 to under 7 years — 6 months; over 7 to 10 years — 1 year; more than 10 years — “Not eligible to be registered”. The circular is addressed to the government sector, and DHP’s nurse guidelines apply it to all applicants. The table leaves exactly 7 years undefined. In practice overseas applicants complete the period before applying (our reading of DHP’s flow chart).
For a nurse applying from abroad, the supervised period in practice has to be completed before applying: DHP’s supervised-training route in Qatar is open only to Qatari nationals and holders of a family residence permit (our reading of the flow chart and circular DHP/2024/20). The table itself leaves a break of exactly seven years undefined; ask DHP in that case. A nurse who stopped working to raise children or care for family, and is approaching two years out, should know that the first threshold is two years — returning to clinical work before then avoids any supervised period.
Practise it, don't just read it
A gap in practice is also a gap in exam readiness. Our Qatar nursing quizzes are a quick way to find the areas that have gone rusty.
The ProSyllabus Qatar nursing library has topic quizzes on fundamentals, medical-surgical, pharmacology, maternal and newborn, paediatric and critical-care nursing, infection control and professional practice — the first quiz is free.
