Alerts and Updates for India Post Inspector of Posts (LDCE)

Updates as of September 21, 2026

The Directorate extended the LDCE IP 2026 schedule by letter F. No. DE-12/5/2026-DE-DOP dated 03.09.2026. Online applications closed 15.09.2026 at 5:30 PM instead of 05.09.2026, verification moved to 16.09.2026 and candidate corrections to 17.09.2026. The exam dates stayed unchanged.

PO Tools Blog

The exam is held offline at Circle Headquarters on 26 and 27 September 2026. Paper-I runs 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM and Paper-II 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM on day one; Paper-III runs 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM on day two.

Admit cards are reported as available from 22 September 2026, after centre allotment was finalised on 18 and 19 September. Download through the departmental portal and check the centre against your circle office rather than waiting, since this is a reported date and not a Directorate notice.

Postalstudy

The notification dated 14.08.2026 puts 27 posts on offer under the 66.66 per cent departmental quota for vacancy year 2026, split UR 21, SC 4 and ST 2, plus one backlog PwBD vacancy. The Directorate states these vacancies are tentative and likely to increase.

PO Tools Blog

The pattern for 2026 is three papers, not the four most guides still print. Paper-I carries 125 objective questions for 250 marks in 2 hours 30 minutes, Paper-II is descriptive noting, drafting and charge sheet for 50 marks in one hour, and Paper-III is 150 objective questions for 300 marks.

Postalstudy

Qualifying standards reported for 2026 are 40 per cent in each paper with a 45 per cent aggregate for general candidates, and 33 per cent per paper with a 38 per cent aggregate for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Eligibility requires eight years of regular qualifying service.

What this means for your preparation

The pattern that applies on 26 and 27 September is the three-paper one introduced by the letter of 22 August 2025, not the four-paper pattern most guides still print. Preparing against the wrong structure costs you the weighting, and the weighting is where the marks are.

Paper-III is half the examination

Paper-III carries 300 of the 600 marks against Paper-I’s 250, and asks 150 objective questions in three hours where Paper-I asks 125 in two and a half. It covers the Constitution, service and administrative law, financial and pension rules and a general section. On marks alone it earns the largest share of your time, and at roughly seventy seconds a question it rewards recall rather than working things out.

Paper-II is the only paper you write

Paper-II is descriptive: noting for 15 marks, drafting for 15 and a draft charge sheet for 20, all inside one hour. Noting, drafting and framing a charge sheet are writing skills rather than reading ones, and they improve by producing drafts and having them corrected. Reading model answers in the last week will not move this paper. Start writing them in longhand against the clock now.

The 31 December cut-off decides what counts

The notification states that circulars, orders and guidelines issued up to 31 December of the year preceding the examination form part of the syllabus, the exception being the Annual Report and Book of Information, where the latest version published on the Department of Posts website is taken. For this September’s papers the line is 31 December 2025, so a circular issued during 2026 is outside the syllabus and reading it displaces something that is inside it.

Without the aid of books means rule numbers from memory

The notification says the examination shall be without aid of books. Nothing can be looked up in the hall, so knowing where a provision sits in a manual is not the same as being able to use it. Build recall of rule numbers alongside the provisions attached to them, because a question that names a rule gives you nothing if you only recognise the subject it belongs to.

One weak paper sinks the whole attempt

General candidates need 40 per cent in each paper and 45 per cent overall; SC, ST and PwBD candidates need 33 per cent and 38 per cent. Both conditions apply together, so a strong Paper-III cannot carry a failed Paper-II. Forty per cent of Paper-II is 20 marks out of 50 — the smallest number on the paper and the one most likely to end an otherwise good attempt.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How many papers does the IP LDCE have now?

Three. The Department of Posts revised the pattern by letter No. 7-14/2011-SPN-II dated 22 August 2025, superseding the pattern circulated on 6 April 2021. Paper-I is 125 objective questions for 250 marks, Paper-II is descriptive for 50 marks and Paper-III is 150 objective questions for 300 marks, totalling 600. Many guides still print the older four-paper pattern.

Are books allowed in the examination hall?

No. The notification states that the examination shall be without aid of books. Rule numbers, time limits and financial powers have to be recalled rather than looked up, which is why these papers reward being able to name the rule that governs a situation, not only understanding the situation itself.

What are the qualifying marks?

General candidates must score 40 per cent in each paper with a 45 per cent overall average. SC, ST and PwBD candidates must score 33 per cent in each paper with a 38 per cent overall average. Both conditions apply together, so clearing every paper individually is not enough if the aggregate falls short.

Which circulars fall inside the syllabus for the 2026 exam?

Circulars, orders and guidelines issued up to 31 December of the year preceding the examination, which for the September 2026 papers means 31 December 2025. The exception is the Annual Report and Book of Information, where the latest version available on the Department of Posts website is taken instead.

Who is eligible to sit the exam?

Officials of the specified grades with eight years of regular qualifying service as on the crucial date. For the 2026 examination the crucial date is 1 January 2026. The notification dated 14 August 2026 also records an age limit of 45 years as on that date, with the usual five-year relaxation for SC and ST candidates.

When are the papers held and when is the admit card issued?

Paper-I and Paper-II are on 26 September 2026 and Paper-III on 27 September 2026, held offline at Circle Headquarters. The extension letter dated 3 September 2026 moved the application and verification deadlines but left the exam dates untouched, and gives 22 September 2026 as the admit card date.
