Checked 25 September 2026. From the unified PQR (3rd version, April 2025), used by DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA. The PQR names no Indian degree; the mapping below is our reading. Confirm with the free Sheryan self-assessment before paying for anything.
Before an exam date, every UAE pharmacy licence starts with a title. The Unified Healthcare Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR) — one rulebook shared by DHA, Abu Dhabi's DOH, MOHAP and Sharjah — sets four pharmacy titles, each with its own qualification and experience rule. The PQR never mentions B.Pharm, D.Pharm or the Pharmacy Council of India, so this guide sets out the PQR's own words and then our reading of where each Indian degree lands.
Unified PQR, April 2025, table 18.27.
The four titles, in the PQR's own words
| Title | Qualification | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Pharmacy Technician | Diploma in Pharmacy programme, minimum two years | Two years after qualifying, in a related field |
| Pharmacist | BSc in Pharmacy, or Doctor of Pharmacy | Two years after qualifying, in a related field |
| Clinical Pharmacist | BSc in Pharmacy + Clinical Pharmacy Residency (minimum two years) | None required (gap-of-practice rules apply) |
| Clinical Pharmacist | PharmD or Doctor of Pharmacy, minimum six-year course; or BSc in Pharmacy + two-year postgraduate PharmD or master's in clinical pharmacy; or a pharmacy degree + a UK postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy (minimum one year) | Two years after qualifying, with at least six months in a hospital setting |
| Specialized Pharmacist | BSc in Pharmacy / PharmD + a one-year postgraduate qualification in a listed specialty | Two years after qualifying, in a related field |
| Specialized Pharmacist | BSc in Pharmacy / PharmD + American Board certification in a listed specialty | None required (gap-of-practice rules apply) |
From PQR table 18.27. The Specialized Pharmacist specialty list is printed as table 18.27.1 (the pharmacy rows refer to it as "18.25.1", an apparent typo) and has sixteen entries, including oncology, cardiology, critical care, infectious diseases, paediatrics, psychiatry, medication safety, drug information, ambulatory care and clinical toxicology.
Where an Indian degree most likely lands
| Indian qualification | Most likely UAE title | Why | Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| D.Pharm (two-year diploma) | Pharmacy Technician | "Diploma in Pharmacy programme, minimum two years" | 2 years |
| B.Pharm (four years) | Pharmacist | "BSc in Pharmacy" | 2 years |
| Pharm.D (six years, including a year of internship) | Pharmacist, or Clinical Pharmacist | "Doctor of Pharmacy"; the Clinical Pharmacist route asks for a PharmD of at least six years | 2 years; for Clinical Pharmacist, 6 months of it in a hospital |
| Pharm.D (Post Baccalaureate) after B.Pharm | Pharmacist; Clinical Pharmacist unconfirmed | The PQR accepts "BSc in Pharmacy and two years postgraduate qualification leading to a PharmD"; the PB course is three academic years (two of study, one of internship), and no authority has said whether it fits that clause | 2 years (6 months in a hospital for Clinical Pharmacist) |
| M.Pharm (two years) | Pharmacist (on the B.Pharm) | An M.Pharm does not by itself meet a Clinical Pharmacist route unless DHA reads it as a "master's in clinical pharmacy" | 2 years (see below) |
Our reading of the PQR, with Indian programme lengths from the Pharmacy Council of India's Pharm.D Regulations 2008 (six academic years; the PB course three, of which one is internship). No UAE authority publishes an equivalence table for Indian degrees. The Sheryan self-assessment is free and is the authoritative first answer.
Which DHA pharmacy title should you apply for?
The experience rules that trip people up
What counts, and what does not
- Hands-on, salaried, licensed. The PQR defines experience as "hands-on clinical experience gained by a licensed healthcare professional during a salaried employment/contractual period". Teaching and non-clinical work do not count.
- Not pharma companies or sales. The pharmacy table says so in a note of its own.
- Part-time counts in proportion: the PQR sets a minimum of 400 hours a year for part-time experience.
- After qualifying. The two years run "post qualification". The PQR does not say how a Pharm.D internship year is treated for pharmacy; our reading is that it is part of the qualification, not the experience. Enter it separately in Sheryan and let DHA decide.
- A licence at home. Applicants must hold a valid licence or registration in their home country or country of last employment — for an Indian pharmacist, State Pharmacy Council registration under the Pharmacy Act, 1948 (our reading).

Common situations
| Your situation | Likely outcome (our reading) |
|---|---|
| B.Pharm, three years in a retail pharmacy chain | Pharmacist — meets the degree and the two years |
| Pharm.D, one year in a hospital then one year in a community pharmacy | Clinical Pharmacist — two years with at least six months in a hospital |
| Pharm.D, internship year only | Not yet — the internship is part of the degree; two years' experience after it are needed |
| B.Pharm, five years as a medical representative | No title yet — that experience is not accepted |
| D.Pharm, two years in a pharmacy | Pharmacy Technician |
| B.Pharm, last worked four years ago | Eligible for Pharmacist, but gap-of-practice rules apply first: 30 CME/CPD credits and eight months' supervised training |
| B.Pharm by distance learning | Not eligible — distance and correspondence qualifications are not counted |
Illustrations of the PQR rules above, not decisions. Your title is decided by the authority after the self-assessment and verification.
What you will need from India
The PQR asks every applicant to hold a valid licence or registration to practise in their home country or country of last employment, and DHA's verification needs a good standing certificate issued within the last six months. For an Indian pharmacist, the natural source of both is the State Pharmacy Council where you are registered — under the Pharmacy Act, 1948, a "registered pharmacist" is one entered in a State register. No DHA document says which Indian body its verifier accepts, so confirm with the verifier before you request a certificate. Your degree, transcripts and each experience letter will also be verified directly with the university and employers, so check that names and dates match your passport before you start.
Qualification rules above the pharmacy table
| Rule (PQR chapter on allied health) | Effect on Indian graduates |
|---|---|
| A required bachelor's degree must be at least three years full-time | A four-year B.Pharm meets it |
| A required master's or postgraduate qualification must be at least two years full-time (one-year programmes only from listed countries such as the UK) | A two-year M.Pharm meets the length rule |
| A master's or PhD in the specialty reduces required experience by one year, if it is not mandatory for the title | May apply to an M.Pharm applying as Pharmacist — not confirmed for pharmacy |
| Qualifications by correspondence, distance learning or honorary award do not count | Distance-mode degrees are excluded |
Specialized Pharmacist: the title above
Specialized Pharmacist is out of reach for most new Indian graduates, but worth knowing about as a career goal. It needs a BSc in Pharmacy or PharmD plus either a one-year postgraduate qualification in one of sixteen listed specialties (with two years' experience) or American Board certification in one of them (no experience required). The specialties include oncology, cardiology, critical care, infectious diseases, paediatrics, psychiatry, nutrition support, medication safety, drug information, ambulatory care and clinical toxicology. The PQR's general rule is that postgraduate qualifications must be at least two years full-time, with one-year programmes accepted only from listed countries such as the UK. Whether an Indian M.Pharm counts depends on whether its specialisation matches one of the listed specialties — something only the authority can confirm.
Before you book the exam
DHA's own process begins with a free self-assessment in Sheryan, which gives a preliminary eligibility result before you upload anything. If it says you are not eligible, DHA offers a paid "Review Eligibility" service. It is worth doing the self-assessment before paying the USD 240 exam fee: passing the exam does not help if the title you sat for is not one your qualification and experience support.
Practise it, don't just read it
Once you know your title, the exam is the next hurdle. Topic quizzes cover the areas the Pharmacist and Clinical Pharmacy exams share.
The ProSyllabus DHA pharmacist library has topic quizzes for Pharmacology and Mechanisms of Action, Pharmaceutics and Dosage Forms, Pharmacy Practice and Dispensing, Clinical Therapeutics, Pharmaceutical Calculations, Drug Interactions and Pharmacovigilance, Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy Basics and UAE Pharmacy Law and Ethics. Each question comes with an explanation.
Can a B.Pharm graduate take the DHA exam?
Yes. The PQR's Pharmacist title accepts a BSc in Pharmacy with two years' experience after qualifying, so a four-year B.Pharm most likely leads to Pharmacist and the PHO5481 exam.
Can a D.Pharm holder work as a pharmacist in Dubai?
Not as a Pharmacist. A two-year Diploma in Pharmacy meets the Pharmacy Technician title, with two years' experience; the exam is PHT5451.
Can a Pharm.D graduate become a Clinical Pharmacist in Dubai?
The PQR accepts a PharmD of at least six years for Clinical Pharmacist, with two years' experience after qualifying including six months in a hospital. Otherwise a Pharm.D qualifies for Pharmacist.
How much experience is needed for the DHA pharmacist licence?
Two years after qualifying, in a related field, for Pharmacist. Pharma-company and sales-rep experience is not accepted.
Does DHA accept experience from a medical representative job?
No. The PQR states that experience with pharmaceutical companies or sales representatives is not accepted.
Does teaching pharmacy count as experience for DHA?
No. The PQR counts hands-on clinical experience in salaried employment as a licensed professional; non-clinical and teaching experience are not considered.
Does part-time pharmacy work count as experience?
Yes, in proportion. The PQR sets a minimum of 400 hours a year for part-time experience, and it must be hands-on, salaried work as a licensed professional.
Does an M.Pharm reduce the experience needed?
Possibly. The PQR says a master's in the specialty reduces required experience by a year when it is not mandatory for the title, but there is no pharmacy-specific confirmation. Check in the Sheryan self-assessment.
