CS Executive Syllabus 2022: The Seven Papers and the Two Groups

Checked 30 September 2026. Paper list from the ICSI student services FAQ and course slides; dates from the December 2026 time table; study material cut-offs from the ICSI notice of 28.07.2026. ICSI can revise the time table, so check it before you travel.

The CS Executive Programme is the middle stage of the Company Secretary course run by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), between the entrance test (CSEET) and the Professional Programme. Since 1 February 2023 it follows Syllabus 2022: seven papers split into Group 1 (four papers) and Group 2 (three papers). You can sit one group or both in a session, and you pass group by group. This guide lists the papers with their codes and December 2026 dates, explains what the group split means in practice, maps the old 2017 papers for students who switched over, and shows which edition of the study material applies. ProSyllabus is an independent study site. We are not affiliated with, or endorsed by, the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI); every rule below is quoted or summarised from ICSI's published documents, and ICSI decides every individual case.

The seven papers, their codes and their December 2026 dates

ICSI numbers the papers 1 to 7 and gives each a paper code (521 to 527). The code is what appears on the admit card and in the exemption documents, so it is worth knowing both.

Source: ICSI student services FAQ (paper names and codes) and the ICSI December 2026 time table (dates). Every paper runs from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM, and the first 15 minutes, 2:00 to 2:15 PM, are reading time. There is no paper on 25 December.

Two things stand out in the calendar. The groups alternate: Group 1 sits on 21, 23, 26 and 28 December and Group 2 on 22, 24 and 27 December. So a student sitting both groups writes on seven of the eight days from 21 to 28 December, with only Christmas Day free, which is a tougher run than either group alone. A student sitting only Group 1 gets at least one free day between papers.

Pick what you enrolled for. The list, the gaps and the countdown come from the ICSI December 2026 time table; the countdown uses this device's clock.

What the group split means

The group is the unit of passing. You pass a group when you score at least 40% in each of its papers and 50% in the aggregate of that group, at one sitting (the full rules, including the two 60% provisos, are in our passing-marks guide). A pass in Group 1 is kept while you attempt Group 2, and the other way round. You complete the Executive stage when both groups are passed.

Sources: ICSI fee schedule and December 2026 important dates (fees); ICSI course slides and 2026 cut-off calendar (registration cut-offs). ICSI does not allow a request to delete a group once you have enrolled, according to the December 2026 announcement.

Which group to take first is a judgement, not a rule. Our reading of the numbers: Group 1 has had the lower pass percentage in every Syllabus 2022 session so far (the full series is in our pass-percentage guide). Group 1 also carries four papers against Group 2's three, and includes both Company Law & Practice and Corporate Accounting & Financial Management. A student who can sit both groups gains the option of the single-sitting pass (40 in each, 50 overall across all seven), but the aggregate is then computed over seven papers, not four or three.

Switching over from Syllabus 2017

The last Executive examination under Syllabus 2017 was held in December 2024. From June 2025 onwards the Executive examination runs under Syllabus 2022 only (ICSI student services FAQ). Students who had passed or been exempted in 2017 papers get corresponding exemptions in the 2022 papers after switching over:

427 Economic, Business and Commercial Laws526 Economic, Commercial and Intellectual Property Laws
428 Financial and Strategic Management524 Corporate Accounting and Financial Management

Three switchover rules that catch people out

  • A switched-over student must pass the online pre-exam test like any Syllabus 2022 student, and the pre-exam test fee after switchover is Rs 1,000 (ICSI student services FAQ).
  • To register for the Professional Programme, both Executive groups must be passed under the same syllabus. ICSI's FAQ says a student who passed Group 1 under 2017 and Group 2 under 2022 is not eligible.
  • The switchover exemptions in the table are paper-for-paper. They are separate from the 60% paper exemption and from the LLB and CMA exemptions described in our exemptions guide.

Where other pages get this wrong

The last Syllabus 2017 Executive examination was December 2024, not June 2024.

Commonly published instead: Some pages, including an earlier version of our own notice board, say the 2017 syllabus was last examined in June 2024.

The ICSI FAQ says "The Last Examinations under the Executive Programme (Old Syllabus 2017) was held in December 2024", and the ICSI press release for December 2024 prints separate pass percentages for the 2017 modules.

Which study material applies to December 2026

ICSI publishes, for each session, the date up to which the study material has been updated. For December 2026 (notice dated 28.07.2026):

PapersStudy material updated till
Papers 1 to 6 (521 to 526)30 November 2025
Paper 7 Tax Laws & Practice (527)31 May 2025

Source: ICSI, Study material applicable for December 2026 examination. ICSI also tells students to read the supplements for the December 2026 examination, published separately on its supplements page.

The ICSI Executive Programme study-material page also lists a separate Tax Laws & Practice book "for June 2027 exam onwards". We found no ICSI notice explaining what changes in that edition or confirming whether it reflects the new Income-tax law. What we can say from the two ICSI documents is only this: December 2026 uses the Tax material updated to 31 May 2025, and a new edition is marked for June 2027. If you will sit Paper 7 in June 2027 or later, follow that edition and ICSI's supplements, not an older book.

What ICSI does not publish about the paper format

You will read on coaching sites that each paper carries 100 marks, that the stage totals 700 marks, and that some papers are part objective. We looked for these in the ICSI documents for Syllabus 2022 (the time table, the qualifying-marks document, the FAQ, the course slides and the study-material notice) and did not find a per-paper maximum or any objective share printed in them. The only ICSI notice we found about OMR (objective) papers at the Executive stage concerns Syllabus 2017. The pass rules themselves are stated in percentages, so nothing on this page depends on the maximum.

Where other pages get this wrong

No ICSI document we found gives an objective or OMR share for any Syllabus 2022 Executive paper.

Commonly published instead: Some pages, including an earlier version of our own notice board citing a coaching site, say Papers 1, 5 and 6 are "20 per cent objective and 80 per cent descriptive" and Paper 4 is fully descriptive.

The only ICSI notice on OMR papers at the Executive stage is for Syllabus 2017. Until ICSI publishes the Syllabus 2022 format, treat any objective share as unconfirmed and check the question paper instructions on the day.

How many papers are there in CS Executive?

Seven under Syllabus 2022: four in Group 1 (papers 521 to 524) and three in Group 2 (papers 525 to 527).

Which papers are in Group 1 of CS Executive?

Jurisprudence, Interpretation & General Laws (521); Company Law & Practice (522); Setting Up of Business, Industrial & Labour Laws (523); and Corporate Accounting & Financial Management (524).

Which papers are in Group 2 of CS Executive?

Capital Market & Securities Laws (525); Economic, Commercial & Intellectual Property Laws (526); and Tax Laws & Practice (527).

When are the CS Executive December 2026 exams?

From 21 to 28 December 2026 with no paper on 25 December. Group 1 is on 21, 23, 26 and 28 December and Group 2 on 22, 24 and 27 December, each from 2:00 to 5:15 PM including 15 minutes of reading time.

Can I write only one group?

Yes. You can enrol for one group or both in a session, and a group once passed stays passed. The registration cut-off for sitting one group in December is 31 July; for both groups it is 31 May.

Is the Syllabus 2017 Executive exam still held?

No. The last 2017-syllabus Executive exam was in December 2024, and from June 2025 the Executive exam is held under Syllabus 2022 only. Old-syllabus students must switch over; passed 2017 papers carry corresponding exemptions.

How many marks is each CS Executive paper?

The ICSI documents we read for Syllabus 2022 do not print a per-paper maximum. Coaching sites say 100 per paper; we have not found that in an ICSI text, and the pass rules are in percentages, so they apply either way.

Which study material should I use for December 2026?

Papers 1 to 6 as updated till 30 November 2025 and Tax Laws & Practice as updated till 31 May 2025, plus ICSI's supplements for the December 2026 session.

Can I pass Group 1 under Syllabus 2017 and Group 2 under Syllabus 2022?

You can hold the passes, but ICSI's FAQ says you cannot then register for the Professional Programme: both groups must be passed under the same syllabus.
