CAT 2026 on 29 November: Sessions, 40-Minute Sections, Timeline

Checked 29 September 2026. From the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin (26.07.2026), the Press Release (26.07.2026), the Media Releases of 15.09.2026, 22.09.2026 and 29.09.2026 and the iimcat.ac.in FAQ. The answer-key, objection and result dates for 2026 have not been announced; the IIMs reserve the right to change the test date and time.

The Common Admission Test 2026 is on Sunday 29 November 2026, in three sessions, conducted by IIM Indore on behalf of the 22 IIMs. Registration is over: it was extended once and closed on 22 September 2026 at 5 PM. From here the calendar is short: the admit-card, mock-test and test-day dates are announced, while the answer-key, objection and result dates are not yet — and most pages still carry the dates from the first press release. This guide puts every official date in one place, sets the bulletin’s promises against what actually happened in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and explains the parts of the paper that are official and the parts that are only coaching estimates.

Where other pages get this wrong

CAT 2026 registration closed on 22 September 2026 at 5 PM, and the admit card opens on 4 November — not on 12 November.

Commonly published instead: Registration “closes on 15 September 2026”, admit card “12 to 29 November 2026”, result “19–28 December 2026”.

The 15.09.2026 media release extended registration to 22 September, 5 PM; a 22.09.2026 release then gave those already registered until 24 September, 5 PM to pay. The bulletin says admit cards can be downloaded from 4 November until 29 November 2026. The 12 November date belongs to the CAT 2025 admit card, and no 2026 result date has been announced — the bulletin only says “likely by the first week of January, 2027”.

CAT 2026: how long until each official date

Dates from the CAT 2026 Information Bulletin (26.07.2026), the FAQ and the 15.09.2026 media release. The bulletin gives no clock time for the admit card or the mock test, so those count to the start of the day (00:00 IST). The test day counts to 08:30 IST, the start of the first session in 2024 and 2025; the 2026 session times will be on the admit card.

What the bulletin promised, and what actually happened

The most useful thing you can know about the CAT calendar is how the last three cycles behaved against their own bulletins. The pattern is consistent: the result came out in the third or fourth week of December, every time, even when the bulletin said early January. The CAT 2025 bulletin also said “first week of January, 2026”; the result was declared on 24 December 2025. And the CAT 2025 admit card, promised “from November 05”, actually opened on 12 November.

CAT 2024 (24 Nov → 19 Dec)25
CAT 2025 (30 Nov → 24 Dec)24

Our arithmetic from the official test and result dates.

What this tells you, and what it does not. It tells you to have your application documents ready in December, not January: IIM shortlists follow the result, and IIM Ahmedabad already says its shortlist is tentatively due in the second week of January 2027. It does not give you a date for 2026. The bulletin’s wording is the only official statement, and we do not replace it with a guess.

The pattern: three sections, fixed order, 40 minutes each

ItemOfficial position
Total time120 minutes (160 for PwBD)
Sections, in orderI: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) → II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) → III: Quantitative Ability (QA)
Time per sectionexactly 40 minutes; no switching between sections
MCQ marking+3 correct, −1 wrong, 0 unattempted
Non-MCQ (typed answer) marking+3 correct, 0 wrong, 0 unattempted
Number of non-MCQs per section“varies and cannot be disclosed”
Syllabusnone defined
Toolson-screen calculator; one scribble pad and pen, collected at the end (PwBD candidates with blindness or low vision get an additional pad on request)

Press Release 26.07.2026 (sections, 40 minutes, no switching) and the CAT 2026 FAQ (marking, non-MCQs, syllabus, calculator, scribble pad, PwBD time).

Two consequences follow. A wrong MCQ costs one mark on top of the three you did not earn, so a blind guess is not free; a non-MCQ has no penalty, so a typed answer is always worth entering if you have one. And the fixed order means that, for standard-time candidates, QA starts 80 minutes into the test (106 minutes 40 seconds in for PwBD candidates with compensatory time) — practise all three sections back to back, not QA fresh.

How many questions? The honest answer

CycleVARCDILRQATotalStatus
CAT 202324202266official (result media release); maximum raw 198 (our arithmetic: 66 × 3)
CAT 2024———68not announced by the IIMs; counted by coaching sites from the papers; a table “out of 204” assumes this (68 × 3)
CAT 2025———68not announced by the IIMs; counted by coaching sites
CAT 2026———not announcedFAQ: the number of non-MCQs cannot be disclosed

Where other pages get this wrong

“CAT 2026 will have 68 questions” is not an official statement.

Commonly published instead: A fixed 68-question pattern (24 VARC, 22 DILR, 22 QA) printed as if announced.

The only section-wise count the IIMs themselves announced in the last three cycles is CAT 2023’s: 24, 20 and 22, total 66, in IIM Lucknow’s result release. For 2024 and 2025 the 68 is a count made by coaching sites from the papers and candidates’ response sheets after the test; no IIM release or bulletin states it. The 2026 bulletin and FAQ give no count at all. A marks total “out of 204” assumes 68 questions; with CAT 2023’s 66 the maximum raw score was 198 (our arithmetic: 66 × 3).

Your section clock

Your section clock on test day

Pick a session and whether you have PwBD compensatory time. The clock shows when each section opens and closes if 2026 keeps the 2024–2025 session times. Sections run in a fixed order and you cannot move to the next one early.

Session times: CAT 2024 and CAT 2025 scaled-score documents (08:30–10:30, 12:30–14:30, 16:30–18:30). Section time: 40 minutes each (Press Release 26.07.2026); PwBD candidates get 20 minutes per hour, 40 minutes in all, divided equally across the three sections (FAQ). Your admit card is the authority for your own reporting and start time.

SessionTest window (2024 and 2025)Standard sectionsPwBD sections (53 min 20 s each)
Morning08:30 – 10:3008:30 / 09:10 / 09:5008:30 / 09:23:20 / 10:16:40, ends 11:10
Afternoon12:30 – 14:3012:30 / 13:10 / 13:5012:30 / 13:23:20 / 14:16:40, ends 15:10
Evening16:30 – 18:3016:30 / 17:10 / 17:5016:30 / 17:23:20 / 18:16:40, ends 19:10

Session times: the CAT 2024 and CAT 2025 Scaled Score Calculation documents, which name the morning (8:30–10:30 AM), afternoon (12:30–2:30 PM) and evening (4:30–6:30 PM) sessions. Section start times are our arithmetic from 40 minutes (or 53 minutes 20 seconds for PwBD) per section. CAT 2023’s release gives the same PwD section time. The 2026 session times will be on the admit card.

Test-day rules that cost people marks

RuleWhat the FAQ says
CalculatorDo not bring one; an on-screen calculator is available throughout
Rough workOne scribble pad and pen only; writing anywhere else, including the admit card, is treated as unfair means; the pad is collected. Exception: PwBD candidates with blindness or low vision get an additional standard-size pad on request
Bio-breakOnly in an emergency; you are re-frisked and the time lost is not compensated
Technical faultTell the invigilator; you move to a new system with the timer paused
SessionAssigned by test-centre availability and city preference; you cannot sit more than one
Section orderFixed and the same for everyone
PwBD time20 minutes per hour, 40 minutes in all, split equally across the three sections

The bio-break rule is the one to plan around: a break inside a 40-minute section comes straight out of that section’s clock. The scribble pad rule matters for DILR — most candidates get one pad for all three sections (only PwBD candidates with blindness or low vision can ask for a second), so keep your set-up tables compact.

What you can still change after registration

Very little, and only for two days. The media release of 29 September 2026 opens a limited edit window from 10:00 AM on 5 October to 5:00 PM on 6 October 2026, for candidates who registered and paid the fee. Only three things can be changed: the photograph, the signature and the test state/city preferences. The release says no further extension will be granted, so if your photo or city choice needs fixing, do it in that window. The bulletin adds that no change of category is entertained after registration, and that the Central Government list on the last date of registration is binding for reservation. If your NC-OBC or EWS certificate was still pending, the bulletin’s undertaking route (the undertaking form, the older certificate and proof of application in one PDF) is the only one; failure to upload the full set “may result in disqualification from the entire admission process”.

For the next eight weeks the useful work is the paper itself. If you want the Quant formulas, DILR methods and VARC rules on a few pages, ProSyllabus has a CAT 2026 revision kit built from the same bulletin and FAQ; page 1 is free to read on that page.
