Checked 29 September 2026. From IIM Calcutta’s Admission Policy for the MBA Programme, Batch 2026-28 (the CAT 2025 cycle), the latest the institute had posted on 29 September 2026. The 2027-29 policy for CAT 2026 may change any number here; the work-experience formula is published as an image and is not reproduced.
IIM Calcutta does not shortlist on percentile alone, and it does not use the percentile at all in its scoring. Its policy runs in three stages: minimum percentiles, then an 85-point composite in which CAT counts through your scaled score, then a 100-point final after the interview. The latest policy IIMC had posted when we checked is for the MBA 2026-28 batch, which used CAT 2025. The CAT 2026 version (batch 2027-29) was not yet out, so read everything here as last cycle’s rules — the best guide available, not a promise.

Where other pages get this wrong
IIM Calcutta’s published minimum for OPEN candidates is 85 overall with 80, 80 and 75 in the sections, and after that it ranks on the scaled score, not the percentile.
Commonly published instead: “IIM C cut-off: 99+ percentile” as a single number, and shortlisting described purely in percentiles.
Table 1 of the MBA 2026-28 policy sets the Stage I minimums and warns that the actual cut-offs “may be much higher” because they depend on how many interview calls are made. Stage II then uses (A/B) × 56, where A is the candidate’s total overall scaled score and B the maximum possible. Two candidates with the same percentile but different scaled scores do not get the same Stage II points.
Stage I: minimum percentiles
| Category | VARC | DILR | QA | Overall |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OPEN | ≥ 80 | ≥ 80 | ≥ 75 | ≥ 85 |
| EWS | ≥ 70 | ≥ 65 | ≥ 65 | ≥ 75 |
| NC-OBC | ≥ 70 | ≥ 65 | ≥ 65 | ≥ 75 |
| SC | ≥ 65 | ≥ 60 | ≥ 60 | ≥ 70 |
| ST | ≥ 55 | ≥ 55 | ≥ 55 | ≥ 65 |
| PwD | ≥ 45 | ≥ 45 | ≥ 45 | ≥ 55 |
IIMC MBA 2026-28, Table 1. Candidates must also have a non-negative raw score in every section of CAT.
Two details are easy to miss. The QA floor for OPEN (75) is lower than VARC and DILR (80), which is the reverse of what many candidates assume. And the non-negative raw score rule means a negative raw score in any section — when the −1 marks from wrong MCQs exceed the +3 marks from correct answers there — disqualifies you at IIMC regardless of your percentile. (Wrong typed-answer questions carry no penalty.)
Stage II: the 85-point shortlist score
| Parameter | Weight | How it is calculated |
|---|---|---|
| CAT score | 56 | (A/B) × 56; A = your total overall scaled score, B = the maximum possible total scaled score |
| Class 10 marks | 10 | Points from the bands below |
| Class 12 marks | 15 | Points from the bands below |
| Gender diversity | 4 | Female and transgender candidates only |
| Total | 85 |
| Marks (%) | Class 10 points | Class 12 points |
|---|---|---|
| ≥ 80 | 10 | 15 |
| ≥ 75 and < 80 | 8 | 12 |
| ≥ 70 and < 75 | 6 | 9 |
| ≥ 65 and < 70 | 4 | 6 |
| ≥ 60 and < 65 | 2 | 3 |
| < 60 | 0 | 0 |
IIMC MBA 2026-28, Tables 2 and 3. Class 10 and 12 percentages use the aggregate of all subjects on the marksheet, whether or not the board counts them. Note the bands here are closed at the bottom (exactly 80% earns full points) — the opposite of IIM Ahmedabad’s.
IIM Calcutta: Stage I check and a Stage II scenario (out of 85)
Uses the published MBA 2026-28 rules (the CAT 2025 cycle). Enter your sectional and overall percentiles, then your total scaled score and Class 10 and 12 marks. IIMC does not publish B, the maximum possible total scaled score, so the Stage II figure is a scenario for the B you enter — not your actual IIMC score.
IIMC MBA 2026-28 policy: Table 1 (Stage I minimums, plus a non-negative raw score in every section), Table 2 (CAT (A/B) × 56, Class 10 up to 10, Class 12 up to 15, gender diversity 4 for female and transgender candidates), Table 3 (Class 10: ≥80 → 10, 75–80 → 8, 70–75 → 6, 65–70 → 4, 60–65 → 2, below 60 → 0; Class 12: 15, 12, 9, 6, 3, 0 on the same bands). IIMC defines B only as the maximum possible total scaled score and does not print it. Each sectional scaled score is capped at 100, so B cannot exceed 300; the tool starts at 300 as a scenario, not a known value (our assumption). The 2027-29 policy for CAT 2026 was not posted when this was checked.
IIMC defines B only as the “maximum possible” total scaled score and does not print the figure. Each sectional scaled score is capped at 100 by the scaling rules, so B can be at most 300 — but that is a ceiling, not a stated value. The calculator starts at 300 as a scenario (our assumption). B is the same for every candidate, so it does not change who is ahead on the CAT component itself; but because the school-marks and gender points are fixed, a different B changes how much CAT weighs against them and can change who is ahead on the 85-point total. Treat every Stage II number on this page as “if B = 300”.
| Profile (illustrative) | CAT points (A/300 × 56) | Class 10 + 12 points | Gender | Stage II total (of 85) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Scaled 210 of 300, Class 10 92%, Class 12 88%, male | 39.20 | 10 + 15 | 0 | 64.20 |
| Scaled 195 of 300, Class 10 86%, Class 12 78%, female | 36.40 | 10 + 12 | 4 | 62.40 |
| Scaled 225 of 300, Class 10 72%, Class 12 66%, male | 42.00 | 6 + 6 | 0 | 54.00 |
| Scaled 180 of 300, Class 10 81%, Class 12 83%, female | 33.60 | 10 + 15 | 4 | 62.60 |
Scenario, not IIMC data: our arithmetic with IIMC’s Tables 2 and 3 and an assumed B = 300. The scaled scores are invented examples; IIMC does not publish B or what Stage II score was needed.
The rows show how the school-marks points trade against CAT under that assumption. With B = 300, one point of Stage II equals about 5.4 scaled marks (300 ÷ 56, our arithmetic). A candidate whose Class 12 is 78% instead of 80% loses 3 points — about 16 scaled marks. The third row has the highest scaled score of the four and still the lowest total, because 72% and 66% in school earn only 6 + 6.
| Trade-off (our arithmetic, B = 300) | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| One Stage II point | 300 ÷ 56 ≈ 5.4 scaled marks |
| Class 12 at 78% instead of 80% (3 points) | about 16 scaled marks |
| One Stage II point if B were 250 instead | 250 ÷ 56 ≈ 4.5 scaled marks |
| Four academic-diversity points at Stage III (does not depend on B) | 4 ÷ 30 × 100 ≈ 13.3% of the 30-point CAT component |
Stage III: the 100-point final score
| Parameter | Weight |
|---|---|
| CAT score (as in Stage II) | 30 |
| Personal interview (PI) | 48 |
| Writing ability test (WAT) | 8 |
| Academic diversity (bachelor’s and master’s) | 6 |
| Work experience | 8 |
| Total | 100 |

| 6 | Dual/integrated degree, non-engineering bachelor’s and master’s | 5 |
| 7 | Dual/integrated degree, engineering bachelor’s and non-engineering master’s | 1 |
| 8 | CA/ICWA/CS or FIAI without a bachelor’s degree | 5 |
| 9 | CA/ICWA/CS or FIAI with a bachelor’s degree | 6 |
| 10 | CA/ICWA/CS or FIAI, with or without a bachelor’s, plus a non-engineering master’s | 6 |
| 11 | Integrated bachelor’s in law + non-engineering master’s | 6 |
IIMC MBA 2026-28, Table 5. Categories 4, 5, 9, 10 and 11 need the relevant marksheet uploaded with the MBA application; 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8 also count for final-year candidates who later submit a completion certificate.
An engineer starts 4 points behind a non-engineering graduate and 6 behind a chartered accountant with a degree. On a 100-point scale that is not small: 4 points is the same as about 13.3% of the 30-point CAT component (4 ÷ 30 × 100, our arithmetic) or about a twelfth of the interview.
Work experience: what we can and cannot tell you
IIMC awards up to 8 points for work experience, measured in completed months as on 31 January 2026 for the last cycle, counting only full-time work after the bachelor’s degree. Internships, articleship, training, project work that was part of a course and unpaid work do not count, Employees must submit a letter from each employer on company letterhead (start and end dates, designation, role) and payslips from each employer; self-employed and family-business candidates furnish proof of company registration, relevant licences or taxes paid where a payslip is not available. The formula that turns months into points is printed on the policy page as an image, which we did not capture, so we do not reproduce it or build it into the calculator. Check it on the IIMC page before you estimate your Stage III score.
How to use this before the CAT 2026 policy appears
If IIMC keeps the structure, three conclusions hold. Your school marks are fixed and worth up to 25 of 85 at the shortlist, so know your number now. Your scaled score, not your percentile, is what earns Stage II points — every extra correct answer counts, even at the top. And no section can be negative, so a reckless guessing strategy in one section can end your IIMC application outright. When the 2027-29 policy is posted, compare its Tables 1 to 5 with the ones above before relying on any number here.
What is the IIM Calcutta minimum percentile for General candidates?
For the 2026-28 batch: VARC 80, DILR 80, QA 75 and overall 85 for OPEN, with a non-negative raw score in every section.
How does IIM Calcutta shortlist for interview?
Stage I minimum percentiles, then a Stage II composite out of 85: CAT (A/B) × 56, Class 10 up to 10, Class 12 up to 15 and gender diversity 4.
Does IIM Calcutta use CAT percentile or scaled score?
Percentiles for the Stage I minimums; the total scaled score for the Stage II and Stage III scores.
How many points do Class 10 and Class 12 marks carry at IIMC?
Up to 10 for Class 10 and 15 for Class 12, both at 80% or above.
What is the IIMC final selection formula?
CAT 30, interview 48, writing test 8, academic diversity 6 and work experience 8, out of 100.
Do engineers get academic diversity points at IIMC?
Not for an engineering degree alone (0). A separate engineering bachelor’s plus a non-engineering master’s earns 2; a dual or integrated engineering-bachelor’s and non-engineering-master’s degree earns 1.
How many points does a CA get at IIM Calcutta?
6 with a bachelor’s degree, 5 without one.
Do women get extra points at IIM Calcutta?
Yes, 4 gender-diversity points at Stage II, for female and transgender candidates.
Is the IIMC 2027-29 admission policy out?
It had not been posted when this was checked on 29 September 2026; the 2026-28 policy is the latest.
Can a negative sectional score stop my IIMC application?
Yes. Stage I requires a non-negative raw score in all sections.
How is work experience counted at IIMC?
Up to 8 points for full-time work after the bachelor’s, in completed months to a cut-off date; employees submit employer letters and payslips, the self-employed proof of registration, licences or taxes paid.
What is B in the IIMC formula?
The maximum possible total scaled score; IIMC does not state the figure. It cannot exceed 300, but that is only a ceiling.
