Minimum CAT Percentiles IIMs Actually Publish, by Category

Checked 29 September 2026. IIM Ahmedabad’s floors are for CAT 2026 (PGP 2027-29); IIM Calcutta’s are its latest posted (MBA 2026-28, CAT 2025); for CAP 2026 (CAT 2025) the official table was provisional and the finalised figures are reported. Each IIM may change its floors and publishes no closing cut-offs.

Search for “IIM cut-off” and you will mostly find one number, usually 99 or higher, sometimes with a category column that shaves a few points off for each reserved group. None of it is in the current IIM admission policies we checked. What the IIMs actually publish are minimum percentiles — floors below which an application is not considered — separately for each category and usually for each section. They are much lower than the folklore, and the real competition happens above them, on each IIM’s own composite score. This guide collects the floors that are officially published for this cycle, shows them side by side, and explains what they do and do not mean.

Where other pages get this wrong

The IIMs publish minimum percentiles, not closing cut-offs — and the published minimums for General candidates are 95 (IIMA) and 85 (IIMC), not 99+.

Commonly published instead: “Top IIMs shortlist General at 99+”, “EWS is 5–7 below General”, “SC ~75–80 and ST ~60–70 at the top IIMs”.

IIMA’s policy for CAT 2026 puts General and EWS on the same floor (95 overall, 85 per section), SC at 85/75 and ST at 75/65. IIMC’s last policy puts EWS and NC-OBC together at 75 overall and SC at 70. The current IIMA and IIMC admission policies cited here do not set 99 as their published minimum; a “99” figure usually describes where some shortlists ended in some year, as reported by candidates.

IIMC MBA 2026-28, Table 1; also requires a non-negative raw score in every section. IIMC adds that actual cut-offs “may be much higher” depending on the number of interview calls.

The sectional floors, side by side

The overall floor gets the attention, but the sectional floors are where applications quietly fail. Both institutes require a minimum in each of VARC, DILR and QA, and a strong overall percentile does not make up for one weak section. The table puts the non-PwD sectional minimums next to each other for the three largest categories.

QA857580657560

IIMA PGP 2027-29 Table 4 (one figure for all three sections); IIMC MBA 2026-28 Table 1 (a figure per section).

Two differences are worth noting. IIMA uses a single sectional floor for all three sections, while IIMC sets VARC higher than DILR and QA for most categories. And IIMC adds a condition IIMA does not print: a raw score of zero or more in every section. A candidate who guesses heavily in one section and ends up negative there fails IIMC’s Stage I even if every percentile clears the table.

The Common Admission Process (CAP 2026, CAT 2025 cycle)

CAP 2026 is the joint interview process of exactly three IIMs — Bodh Gaya, Jammu and Sirmaur — for the MBA 2026-28 batch, which used CAT 2025; it was coordinated by IIM Bodh Gaya. IIM Bodh Gaya’s admission policy prints a cut-off table “for reference only” and says the CAP cut-off “will be finalized after the CAT 2025 result”. The finalised figures that circulated afterwards are lower for General candidates. We print both, because we could not open the final CAP document to confirm the second.

Non-PwD overall floors. IIMA PGP 2027-29 Table 4; IIMC MBA 2026-28 Table 1.

The chart shows the one pattern that holds across both institutes: the floors step down by category, and IIMA’s are set higher than IIMC’s at every level. What it does not show is where each shortlist actually ended. Neither IIM publishes that.

Floors are percentiles of the whole field

A point that often confuses: every percentile, including the SC or ST floor, is computed over everyone who appeared, not within your category. The category only decides which floor applies. So the ST floor of 75 at IIMA still means being ahead of about three-quarters of the entire field. The table turns each floor into an approximate rank, using the CAT 2025 field.

Floor (percentile)Where it appliesApproximate rank at 2.58 lakh (our arithmetic)

Our arithmetic: approximate rank ≈ N × (1 − P/100) with N = 2,58,000, the CAT 2025 appeared count rounded; the number strictly ahead of you is one less. The 2026 field is unknown.

For comparison, the reservation rules printed in the CAT bulletin are 27% NC-OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, up to 10% EWS and 5% PwBD. Each reserved category’s share of candidates is smaller than its share of seats — a descriptive comparison only: the two percentages have different denominators, and neither tells you how many candidates in a category clear a given floor. What the floor does tell you is the hard eligibility line to clear. It is not a target or a prediction of an interview call: plan for a margin above every sectional floor, because the shortlist is decided by each IIM’s scoring after that.

Which published floors do your percentiles clear?

Enter your category and four percentiles (from a mock, or last year’s scorecard). The checker compares them with the floors IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta print, and with the CAP 2026 figures (the official reference table and the reported final General figures). These are floors, not cut-offs: clearing them makes you eligible to be considered, nothing more.

IIM Ahmedabad: PGP 2027-29 Table 4 (for CAT 2026). IIM Calcutta: MBA 2026-28 Table 1 (for CAT 2025; PwD candidates use its PwD row, and a non-negative raw score in every section is also required). CAP 2026 (MBA 2026-28, used CAT 2025): the official reference table in IIM Bodh Gaya’s policy, which says the cut-off “will be finalized after the CAT 2025 result”; and the finalised General figures as reported (90 overall for men, 85 for female and transgender candidates, 65 per section) — the final CAP document itself could not be opened.

What clearing a floor actually gets you

Clearing IIMA’s floor makes your composite eligible for shortlisting; the shortlist then depends on your composite against others in your discipline. Clearing IIMC’s floor moves you to its 85-point Stage II; the Stage II cut-off is then set by how many interviews the institute wants to hold. In both cases your sectional percentiles matter as much as the overall: a 99 overall with 84 in QA fails IIMA’s General floor of 85 in each section. Plan your mocks so no section is your weak link, and read each IIM’s policy for this cycle as it is posted.

The other IIMs publish their own policies on their own websites, at their own times. The bulletin is explicit that each IIM “is independent to mandate their own eligibility criteria (including academic cut-offs and relative weights)”. Where a policy for CAT 2026 is not yet out, last year’s is a guide, not a rule.

What is the minimum CAT percentile for IIM Ahmedabad?

For CAT 2026: 95 overall and 85 in each section for General and EWS; 90/80 NC-OBC; 85/75 SC; 75/65 ST; lower for PwD.

What is the minimum CAT percentile for IIM Calcutta?

For the 2026-28 batch: OPEN 85 overall with VARC 80, DILR 80 and QA 75.

Is the EWS cut-off lower than General?

At IIMA, no — both have 95 overall. At IIMC, EWS had 75 overall against 85 for OPEN.

Do IIMs publish their closing cut-offs?

No. They publish minimum percentiles; the real cut-off depends on the composite scores and number of interview calls.

Are reserved-category percentiles calculated within the category?

No. Every percentile is over all candidates who appeared; the category only decides which minimum applies.

What is the SC cut-off at IIM Ahmedabad?

85 overall and 75 in each section (75 and 65 for SC PwD).

What is the ST cut-off at IIM Ahmedabad?

75 overall and 65 in each section (65 and 55 for ST PwD).

Do sectional percentiles matter?

Yes. Both IIMA and IIMC set a minimum in every section, not only overall.

What are the CAP 2026 cut-offs?

CAP 2026 (IIM Bodh Gaya, Jammu and Sirmaur; CAT 2025) printed a provisional reference table of 95 overall and 75 per section for General. The finalised General figures were reported as 90 overall (85 for female and transgender candidates) with 65 per section; we could not open the final document.

What share of CAT candidates are General category?

65.32% of those who appeared in CAT 2025.

Is 95 percentile enough for IIM Ahmedabad?

It meets the General floor only if every section is 85 or more; the shortlist then depends on the composite score.

Where do I find each IIM’s criteria?

On each IIM’s own admissions page; the CAT bulletin says every IIM sets its own criteria.
