Checked 30 September 2026. Our sums from the CAP portal's public PGCET course data (read 29 Sep 2026) and the booklet V4 tentative seat list. Seats can change between counselling phases; Phase II is not yet announced.
Two official documents describe the 2026 AP PGCET seat pool, and they do not agree. The Instruction Booklet printed a tentative list in the spring; the CAP portal — the system that actually allotted seats on 22 September — carries a later and larger matrix that includes the new private-university seats. This guide prints both, then breaks the CAP matrix down by college type, seat type, test and fee. Every total below is our own sum from the official rows.
Where other pages get this wrong
The 2026 seat total depends on which official file you read: 34,296 in the booklet, 37,475 sanctioned (plus 3,783 EWS) on the CAP portal.
Commonly published instead: most pages quote a single round number with no source, or none at all.
The booklet's tentative list (1,348 rows, 292 colleges) adds up to 30,658 convener seats plus 3,640 EWS seats. The CAP data (1,404 rows, 288 institutions) has 37,475 sanctioned seats, of which 31,663 are convener and 5,795 management, plus 3,783 EWS. The CAP figure is later and includes seven private universities. Neither is wrong; they measure different things at different times.
| Measure | Booklet tentative list | CAP portal data |

Source: APPGCET-2026 Instruction Booklet V4, tentative list of PG courses (official); CAP public PGCET course data read 29 Sep 2026 (official). All totals are our sums. Three booklet rows print totals that do not match their parts (AU PG113B, VSU PG127, AKNU PG054), so the booklet's own row totals and our sum of its parts differ slightly.
CAP data read 29 Sep 2026; qualified count reported by The Hans India, 30 May 2026.
Set the last two tiles side by side. On the reported 2026 figures, there were about two convener seats for every candidate who qualified (31,663 against 15,020 — our arithmetic). For most applicants the real question is not whether a seat exists but which college, which course and which seat type — and that is decided by rank, local status and the options you enter.
Seats by type of institution
The CAP data tags every institution with a type. University colleges and government colleges have no management quota at all; private colleges keep 30% for management, and private universities keep 65%.
| Institution type | Institutions | Sanctioned | Convener | Management | EWS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private College | 185 | 16,061 | 11,246 | 4,802 | 1,615 |
| Private Aided | 16 | 1,836 | 1,286 | 550 | 184 |
| University College | 28 | 13,727 | 13,723 | 0 | 1,467 |
| Government College | 52 | 5,155 | 5,155 | 0 | 517 |
| Private University | 7 | 696 | 253 | 443 | 0 |
Source: CAP public PGCET course data, read 29 Sep 2026 (official); sums are ours. The seven private universities are SRM, VIT-AP, Mohan Babu, Annamacharya, Aditya, Godavari Global and Apollo.
Private colleges hold the most sanctioned seats (16,061) but university colleges hold the most convener seats that carry no management share (13,723). Private universities are new to PGCET counselling in 2026: 696 seats, of which only 253 are convener seats. Their Category A (convener) share is 35% of intake against 70% in private colleges — so for the same sanctioned seat, a private university offers counselling half as much.
Seats per test code
The chart ranks the tests by convener seats. The full list of 31, with the EWS figure, is in the table under it. These figures come from the booklet's tentative list mapped to tests, so they sum to the booklet's pool rather than the CAP one; courses open to several tests are left out.

The courses with the most convener seats in the CAP matrix tell the same story from the other side: M.Sc. Organic Chemistry (PG127) alone has 3,918 convener seats — more than all of Commerce's test pool in the booklet — because nearly every private science college offers it.

What a seat costs: convener fees by seat type
Each CAP row carries a convener fee. The booklet says a candidate pays "the total fees payable per annum as fixed by the APHERMC" (the AP Higher Education Regulatory and Monitoring Commission); the CAP data itself does not say whether a figure is annual. The table groups rows by the college type and seat type the portal records and gives the median and the range. The last column is the number of convener seats and rows behind each median, so you can see how much each figure rests on.
| College type and seat type | Median convener fee (Rs, ours) | Range (Rs) | Convener seats / rows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Government college, Regular (Govt R) | 14,500 | 9,100 – 14,500 | 164 / 7 |
| Government college, Self-Finance (Govt SF) | 30,000 | 13,900 – 77,825 | 4,991 / 155 |
| Private aided college, Self-Finance | 29,500 | 12,000 – 29,500 | 1,286 / 51 |
| Private college, Self-Finance | 29,500 | 12,000 – 29,500 | 11,246 / 435 |
| Private university, Self-Supporting | 47,000 | 29,500 – 73,500 | 253 / 28 |

The pattern is simple. University Regular seats are the cheapest (median Rs 12,915) and private and aided college seats sit at a flat Rs 29,500 for almost every course — that figure is the APHERMC fee most private rows carry. Payment and self-supporting seats in universities cost more, and the spread inside universities is enormous: from Rs 8,000 to Rs 2,34,200 on self-finance seats.
The fee field also moved this year. 397 CAP rows carry an old convener fee that differs from the current one; most are private colleges going from Rs 30,000 to Rs 29,500, and only five rows went up. If a college prospectus quotes Rs 30,000, it may be the old figure.
| Fee (Rs) | Course and institution (seat type) |
|---|---|
| 2,34,200 | PG133 M.Sc. Forensic Sciences, ANU (SF) |
| 1,71,925 | PG066 M.Sc. Biotechnology, SVU (SS) |
| 1,66,200 | PG153 M.Sc. Data Science, SVU (SS) |
| 1,62,625 | PG080 M.Sc. Home Science (MS Food Technology), SVU |

AP PGCET fee estimator by seat type
Choose the seat type you are likely to get and the number of years you expect to pay. The estimator uses the median convener fee for that seat type from the 2026 CAP data, shows the full range, and says whether government schemes apply.
The CAP data does not label the fee period; the booklet says fees are "per annum as fixed by the APHERMC". Multiplying by years is our arithmetic and assumes the fee does not change.
Fee reimbursement: which seats qualify
Seat type decides more than the fee — it decides whether the state pays it. The booklet sets out three rules. Candidates eligible for Reimbursement of Tuition Fee (RTF) admitted to Regular and Self-Finance seats in universities and their constituent or affiliated government colleges are exempted from paying tuition. Separately, under G.O.Ms.No.77 of 25-12-2020, post-matric scholarships for PG are confined to convener Regular seats in state universities and government colleges, so students in private aided or unaided colleges are not eligible for government schemes whatever the category or mode of admission. And self-supporting, payment and special seats are never eligible.
| Seat | Government schemes (2026 booklet) | Note |
|---|---|---|
| University or government college — Regular (R) | Yes, if eligible | Post-matric scholarship G.O. names Regular seats |
| University or government college — Self-Finance (SF) | RTF tuition exemption stated | The scholarship G.O. names Regular only — confirm |
| University — Self-Supporting (SS), Payment (PA), Special | No | Above sanctioned intake, higher fee |
| Private aided or unaided college — Category A or B | No | G.O.Ms.No.77 of 25-12-2020 |
| Any seat, candidate who has crossed 34 years | No fee reimbursement | The 2025 booklet set this at 32 |
Source: APPGCET-2026 Instruction Booklet V4, admission rules (official); the age limit compared with the APPGCET-2025 booklet (official). CAP also asks reimbursement claimants for a parental income certificate issued on or after 01.01.2023, or a white ration card.
The practical point: a cheap-looking private seat at Rs 29,500 can cost a reimbursement-eligible student more than a university Regular seat that costs nothing out of pocket. When you order options, put the seat type next to the fee in your own list.
Where the seats sit: AU area and SVU area
The booklet list also shows where the seats are. Of the booklet's pool, 20,480 seats are in the Andhra University area (the coastal districts), 12,187 in the SV University area (Rayalaseema and Nellore), 1,447 in state-wide institutions shared between the two, and 182 on rows the list gives no area. By seat type the booklet has 23,763 SF, 8,131 R, 1,424 SS and 978 PA seats; by college type 13,342 private, 13,097 university and 7,857 government. Because 85% of each course is reserved for local candidates of its own area, where the seats are matters as much as how many there are.
| Split (booklet list) | Seats (ours) |
|---|---|
| AU area | 20,480 |
| SVU area | 12,187 |
| AU/SVU (state-wide) | 1,447 |
| No area printed | 182 |
| Self-Finance (SF) | 23,763 |
| Regular (R) | 8,131 |
| Self-Supporting (SS) | 1,424 |
| Payment (PA) | 978 |

Practise it, don't just read it
Seats are plentiful, so rank decides the college and the seat type. A few extra marks move you up a long rank list — practise the paper you are writing.
The ProSyllabus AP PGCET library has topic quizzes for English, Commerce, Economics, Chemistry and Computer Science — the five largest tests by seats after Life Sciences and Mathematics.
How many seats are there in AP PGCET 2026?
The CAP portal data has 37,475 sanctioned seats (31,663 convener, 5,795 management) plus 3,783 EWS seats across 288 institutions. The booklet tentative list printed 30,658 convener plus 3,640 EWS, 34,296 in all. Both totals are our sums.
What is the fee for M.Sc. through AP PGCET in a private college?
Most private college convener seats carry Rs 29,500 in the 2026 CAP data, and the median for private self-finance rows is Rs 29,500. The booklet says fees are per annum as fixed by the APHERMC.
Do private university seats come through AP PGCET?
Yes, from 2026. Seven private universities are in the CAP matrix. Only 35% of their intake is convener (Category A) seats; the other 65% is management quota.
Is fee reimbursement available in private colleges for PG?
No. The booklet cites G.O.Ms.No.77, which confines PG post-matric scholarships to convener Regular seats in state universities and government colleges.
What is the highest fee in AP PGCET counselling?
In the 2026 CAP data the highest convener fee is Rs 2,34,200 for M.Sc. Forensic Sciences at ANU on a self-finance seat.
Are there spot admissions after AP PGCET counselling?
Not at state-funded universities and their constituent or affiliated government colleges. Private colleges and private universities may fill vacant convener seats by spot admission after all phases.
