Checked 29 September 2026. The task list is the 2021 public exam guide; the current guide is behind a Workday Community login and may differ. Workday's certification description was checked on 29 September 2026.
The only public Workday Pro HCM Core task list we could verify is more detailed than most course brochures: 3 sections, 22 topics and 78 tasks, with a question split of 30 HCM Fundamentals, 10 Business Process Fundamentals and 10 Report Writer. The catch is its age. It comes from the public HCM Core Exam Guide, a file created in October 2021. Workday has since changed the exam format and the recommended courses, and its current public policy no longer states the old 80% threshold — it reports only Pass or Fail. Workday tells candidates to use the current, certification-specific Exam Guide on its login-only Workday Pro Exam Resources page; we could not read that version. So this guide does two things: it sets out every task exactly as the 2021 guide lists it, and it marks what Workday's current public certification description (updated July 2026) confirms, what it renames, and what the public pages do not state — including whether the 30/10/10 split still holds. There is a 78-task tracker at the end, linked to the ProSyllabus unit quizzes.
Workday Pro HCM Core Exam Guide (2021 edition, the only public version we could find).
The three sections at a glance
| Section | Questions (2021 split) | Share of 50 | Topics | Tasks | Questions per task (our arithmetic) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HCM Fundamentals | 30 | 60% | 7 | 43 | 0.70 |
| Business Process Fundamentals | 10 | 20% | 6 | 13 | 0.77 |
| Report Writer | 10 | 20% | 9 | 22 | 0.45 |
Section, topic and task counts are from the exam guide; the share and questions-per-task columns are our arithmetic. The guide says you "will be tested on some or all of these tasks", so a task may carry no question on your form.
Read the last column carefully. Report Writer has the most tasks per question: 22 tasks for 10 questions, about 0.45 of a question per task. Business Process Fundamentals has the fewest tasks per question: 13 tasks for 10 questions. Those ratios are descriptive only. The 2021 guide gives no task-level weighting — it does not say questions are spread evenly across tasks, or that any section's questions are shallower — so the ratios cannot tell you which section repays study time best.
Where other pages get this wrong
The 30/10/10 split and the course names come from 2021; Workday's current public description uses different course names and states no split.
Commonly published instead: Prep pages that present "HCM Fundamentals, Report Writer and Business Process Fundamentals" as the current recommended training and 30/10/10 as the current exam weightage.
Workday's HCM certification page (updated 31 July 2026) recommends HCM Core for Administrators and HCM Core Supplemental for Administrators, 4 training credits each, and describes the exam by skills, not question counts. The task list below is still the best public map of the content — but treat its weights as a 2021 guide, not a promise about your form.
What the current description says the exam verifies
| Current description (HCM certification page, 31 Jul 2026) | Where it sits in the 2021 task list |
|---|---|
| Navigating Workday using basic search and navigation techniques | Navigation, Finding Data and Business Objects (2 tasks) |
| Supervisory organizations | Organizations (7 tasks) |
| Staffing models | Staffing Models (5) and Jobs and Positions (9) |
| Job profiles | Job Profiles (5 tasks) |
| Compensation | Compensation (8 tasks) |
| Security | Security (7) and Business Process Security (1) |
| Business processes | Business Process Fundamentals, all 6 topics (13 tasks) |
| Reporting configurations and capabilities using Workday Report Writer | Report Writer, all 9 topics (22 tasks) |
Workday's current wording names "the 6 core Workday HCM concepts including supervisory organizations, staffing models, job profiles, compensation, security, and business processes", plus navigation and Report Writer. Every one of those maps onto the 2021 topics, which is why the old task list is still useful. Nothing in the current public description points to integrations: Integration System Users, EIBs and XSLT transformations are not listed in the 2021 HCM Core task list or in Workday's public HCM Core description. That is as far as the public sources go; check the current login-only Exam Guide before treating it as a definitive exclusion. (Workday's integrations certification is itself changing: its page says the Workday Pro Integrations Certification is being retired and replaced by the Workday Pro Workday Orchestrate Developer Certification.)
One reported account complicates the picture. A candidate who passed in January 2025 wrote that the Exam Guide he used from Workday Community listed question percentages per category — roughly equal, in his words — about 25 points, a "Staffing setup" category, and no Compensation. That suggests the login-only guide had already been rewritten, and that its weights may not be 30/10/10. Against that, Workday's July 2026 description names compensation as a core concept. We cannot reconcile the two from public sources, so compensation stays in your plan.
| Source | Status | What it lists |
|---|---|---|
| Public exam guide PDF (2021) | Official, dated | 22 topics, 78 tasks, including 8 Compensation tasks; split 30/10/10 |
| HCM certification page (31 Jul 2026) | Official, current | Navigation, the 6 core concepts including compensation, and Report Writer; no split |
| Login-only exam guide, as described by a candidate (Jan 2025) | Reported | Category question percentages ("roughly equal"), about 25 points, a "Staffing setup" category, no Compensation |

HCM Fundamentals: 7 topics, 43 tasks, 30 questions
This is the heart of the exam and of the recommended course. Organizations (7 tasks) asks you to maintain organization types and subtypes, build a supervisory organization reporting structure, create cost centers, configure company and cost center hierarchies, create locations and location hierarchies, assign leadership and supporting roles, and move workers between organizations. Staffing Models (5) is about telling position management from job management: position restrictions when creating positions, and hiring restrictions set on an organization. Job Profiles (5) covers creating and editing a profile, job families and family groups, job requisitions, and — the task most people underrate — the relationship between job profiles, jobs, positions and workers.
Jobs and Positions is the largest topic at 9 tasks, and it is where the staffing concepts become transactions: create positions, set hiring restrictions, manage filled and unfilled positions, close and freeze them, hire, change jobs, add additional jobs, terminate, and contract and end contingent workers. Compensation (8) runs from the compensation framework and eligibility rules through defaulting, packages, grades with grade profiles, salary and allowance plans, to compensation events. Security (7) is the conceptual core: functional areas versus domains versus business processes, user-based versus role-based versus Workday-assigned security groups, updating and activating security policies, and what organization access options mean. Navigation has 2 tasks: navigation techniques and the purpose of business objects.
Business Process Fundamentals: 6 topics, 13 tasks, 10 questions
The framework topic (3 tasks) asks how organizations, security and business processes relate; the difference between default, organization-specific and rule-based definitions; and the vocabulary of definition, type, event and step. Steps (2) covers actions, subprocesses, approvals and approval chains. Step-level configuration (4) is condition rules, advanced routing, step label overrides with help text, and custom notifications with triggers. Definition-level configuration (2) is ordering and inserting steps by letter and validation conditions. Then one task each for management (mass and individual tasks) and security (how business processes interact with configurable security). A candidate's report that several items showed a screen such as a business process definition fits this section: expect to read a definition, not just recall a term.
Report Writer: 9 topics, 22 tasks, 10 questions
The widest section. It starts with copying a standard report and building a custom report from a delivered one, choosing an indexed versus standard data source, adding fields from related business objects and enabling a report as a web service. Then sorting and filtering (with performance in mind), prompts including built-in prompts, report security and sharing, transferring ownership, scheduling with runtime criteria, and matrix reports and Discovery Boards — the single biggest Report Writer topic at 6 tasks. Calculated fields and report performance close it with 1 task each. If you already build custom reports at work, this section is quick revision; if you do not, the matrix and Discovery Board tasks deserve hands-on time in a tenant.
A study order, in our reading
| Order | Block | Why first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Organizations, Staffing Models, Job Profiles, Jobs and Positions | Everything else — security, business processes, reports — is built on the organization and staffing objects (26 tasks) |
| 2 | Security and Business Process Fundamentals | Business processes plus the security model they depend on (20 tasks) |
| 3 | Compensation | Named in Workday's current description; a separate framework of 8 tasks |
| 4 | Report Writer | The most tasks per question in the 2021 split: 22 tasks for 10 questions |
| 5 | Navigation and business objects | Only 2 tasks, and you use them in every other block anyway |
Our suggested order, not Workday's. Task counts are from the 2021 guide.

The ProSyllabus Workday Pro HCM Core library has 6 quizzes of 10 questions covering six topics from the 2021 public exam guide: Navigation, Finding Data and Business Objects; Organizations; Staffing Models; Job Profiles; Business Process Framework; and Introduction to Matrix Reports. They are written from the task list and public descriptions, audited by two AI reviewers question by question, and are not Workday exam items. There are no quizzes yet for Compensation, Jobs and Positions, Security, or the other Business Process and Report Writer units.
What is the syllabus of Workday Pro HCM Core?
The only public task list we could verify, the 2021 exam guide, has 3 sections (HCM Fundamentals, Business Process Fundamentals, Report Writer), 22 topics and 78 tasks. Workday's current description covers navigation, the six core HCM concepts and Report Writer.
What is the weightage of each section?
The 2021 guide gave 30 questions to HCM Fundamentals, 10 to Business Process Fundamentals and 10 to Report Writer. Workday's public HCM certification page does not state current weights; customers and partners should check the current Exam Guide on the login-only Workday Pro Exam Resources page. We could not verify its latest weights.
Is compensation on the HCM Core exam?
The 2021 task list has 8 compensation tasks and Workday's July 2026 description names compensation as a core concept. One 2025 candidate reported a login-only guide without it, so prepare it anyway.
Are integrations, EIB or XSLT on HCM Core?
They are not listed in the 2021 task list or in Workday's public HCM Core description. Check the current login-only Exam Guide before treating that as a definitive exclusion.
Which topic has the most tasks?
Jobs and Positions, with 9 tasks, followed by Compensation with 8.
Where can I get the current exam guide?
On the Workday Pro Exam Resources page in Workday Community, which needs a customer or partner login.
Which courses does Workday recommend now?
HCM Core for Administrators and HCM Core Supplemental for Administrators, 4 training credits each. They are recommended, not required.
Does ProSyllabus cover every topic?
Not yet. There are 6 unit quizzes: Navigation, Organizations, Staffing Models, Job Profiles, Business Process Framework and Matrix Reports.
