Checked 7 October 2026. Pay levels and initial pay are those printed in CEN 06/2025 and CEN 07/2025. DA is 60% from 1 January 2026 (OM of 22 April 2026); a revision from 1 July 2026 had not been found issued on 7 October 2026. HRA and transport allowance rates are the 2017 central rates; the notifications state none. The 8th Pay Commission has made no recommendation that applies yet.
The ten NTPC posts pay at five levels of the 7th CPC pay matrix, from Level 2 (Rs 19,900) to Level 6 (Rs 35,400), and at today's 60 per cent dearness allowance the entry gross runs from about Rs 35,270 to about Rs 73,020 a month, depending on the posting city. The two notifications print only the level and the initial pay; allowances are central government rates that we apply and label. This guide builds the entry pay for each level in three city classes, shows what changes when DA moves, lists what the notifications say about posting and service, and gives you a calculator with room for your own deductions.
Pay levels and initial pay are printed in the two notifications; DA is the Department of Expenditure order; everything else is our arithmetic.

The pay level of each NTPC post
The detailed notifications print a pay level and an initial pay for every post. Annexure A repeats them with the medical standard. The "initial pay" is the starting basic in the pay matrix; later stages of the matrix and increments are not in the notification.
| Pay level (7th CPC) | Initial basic pay | Posts |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Rs 19,900 | Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk (UG) |
| 3 | Rs 21,700 | Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (UG) |
| 4 | Rs 25,500 | Traffic Assistant (Graduate) |
| 5 | Rs 29,200 | Goods Train Manager, Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist (Graduate) |
| 6 | Rs 35,400 | Station Master, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor (Graduate) |
Printed initial pay of the notifications. Level 6 is 1.78 times Level 2 by our division.
Dearness allowance, HRA and transport allowance
Three allowances add to basic pay at entry. Dearness allowance is a percentage of basic revised twice a year. The Ministry of Finance raised it from 58 per cent to 60 per cent with effect from 1 January 2026 by an office memorandum of 22 April 2026. A revision from 1 July 2026 was not issued when we checked, and press reports of a rise to 63 per cent are expectations only; the tool lets you set any DA to test it.
House rent allowance depends on the class of the city of posting: 30 per cent of basic in X-class cities, 20 per cent in Y-class and 10 per cent in Z-class while DA stands at 50 per cent or more, according to the Department of Expenditure OM of 7 July 2017 as quoted in a CAG circular. Transport allowance comes from a second OM of the same date, read on a mirror and therefore labelled reported: Rs 1,350 (higher TPTA cities) or Rs 900 (other places) at Levels 1 and 2, Rs 3,600 or Rs 1,800 at Levels 3 to 8, plus DA on the amount, and it is not admissible to an employee who is given government transport.
| Element | Rate or rule | Source | Per month at Level 2 | Per month at Level 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dearness allowance | 60% of basic from 01.01.2026 | DoE OM 22 Apr 2026 (official) | Rs 11,940 | Rs 21,240 |
| HRA, X-class city | 30% of basic | DoE OM 7 Jul 2017 (official, via CAG) | Rs 5,970 | Rs 10,620 |
| HRA, Y-class city | 20% of basic | same | Rs 3,980 | Rs 7,080 |
| HRA, Z-class city | 10% of basic | same | Rs 1,990 | Rs 3,540 |
| Transport allowance with DA, higher TPTA city | Rs 1,350 (L1-2) or Rs 3,600 (L3-8), plus DA | DoE OM 7 Jul 2017 (reported) | Rs 2,160 | Rs 5,760 |
| Transport allowance with DA, other places | Rs 900 (L1-2) or Rs 1,800 (L3-8), plus DA | same | Rs 1,440 | Rs 2,880 |
Gross pay at entry for each level, in three kinds of posting
The table sets out basic, DA, HRA and transport allowance with DA for each level and gives the gross. The three columns are our combinations: an X-class city paired with a higher-TPTA transport allowance, a Y-class city and a Z-class city each paired with the lower transport figure. Other combinations fall between them. Gross is before any deduction.
| Level | Basic | DA at 60% | Gross, X-class + higher TPTA | Gross, Y-class + other | Gross, Z-class + other |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Rs 19,900 | Rs 11,940 | Rs 39,970 | Rs 37,260 | Rs 35,270 |
| 3 | Rs 21,700 | Rs 13,020 | Rs 46,990 | Rs 41,940 | Rs 39,770 |
| 4 | Rs 25,500 | Rs 15,300 | Rs 54,210 | Rs 48,780 | Rs 46,230 |
| 5 | Rs 29,200 | Rs 17,520 | Rs 61,240 | Rs 55,440 | Rs 52,520 |
| 6 | Rs 35,400 | Rs 21,240 | Rs 73,020 | Rs 66,600 | Rs 63,060 |
Our arithmetic: basic + DA at 60% + HRA at 30% + transport allowance with DA.
Work through one case to see how the parts add. A Goods Train Manager starts at Level 5, basic Rs 29,200. DA at 60 per cent is Rs 17,520. In an X-class city HRA at 30 per cent is Rs 8,760, and transport allowance of Rs 3,600 plus 60 per cent DA on it is Rs 5,760. The gross is Rs 61,240. In a Z-class city with the lower transport allowance the same post grosses Rs 52,520. The posting city therefore moves the monthly figure by about Rs 8,720 at that level, which is more than most candidates expect when they compare posts.
Monthly salary calculator for an NTPC post
Pick the pay level, the city class that decides house rent allowance and the transport case, set the DA rate and add your own deductions. It adds basic pay, DA, HRA and transport allowance with DA on it, then subtracts what you enter. It uses the central government rates; the NTPC notifications themselves print only the level and the initial pay.
Our arithmetic. DA is 60% from 1 January 2026 (Department of Expenditure OM of 22 April 2026); HRA 30/20/10% of basic while DA is 50% or more (OM of 7 July 2017); transport allowance read on a mirror of the 7 July 2017 OM (reported): Level 1-2 Rs 1,350 or 900, Level 3-8 Rs 3,600 or 1,800, plus DA, not for those with government transport. We do not model minimum-amount rules, night duty, running or other railway allowances, increments or tax. The deductions box is yours: this page does not state the NPS or UPS contribution rate, so check your own scheme.
Segments are rupees a month at entry; our arithmetic.
From gross to in-hand
In-hand pay is gross minus recoveries, and the recoveries depend on you: the pension scheme you are in, group insurance or medical subscriptions, any advance, and income tax, which depends on your whole income. The notifications give no figures for them and we do not print a single "in-hand salary" for a post. The calculator subtracts whatever you enter. As a way to see the effect, a deduction of Rs 4,000 a month on the Level 5 X-class case above leaves Rs 57,240, and a deduction of Rs 8,000 leaves Rs 53,240; the sums are only arithmetic on an assumed deduction.
A pension contribution is likely to be the largest recovery for staff in a contributory scheme. We have not checked the scheme rules or the current employee rate against a primary document for this page, so we ask you to enter your own figure instead of assuming a rate.
What the notifications say about posting and service
Four conditions in the general instructions shape what the pay is like to live on. First, the RRB only recommends candidates; the Railway issues the offer of appointment subject to vacancies and eligibility, and the allotment of category, post and railway is based on merit, post preference, medical fitness and vacancy on the day the panel is prepared. Once the RRB allots a post, the candidate loses the right to be considered for any other post in the same pay level. Second, a railway servant is ordinarily employed throughout service on the railway where first posted, and no request for transfer to another railway is registered until the new appointee has completed at least 5 to 10 years of service, which is why the notifications tell candidates to choose their RRB with care. Third, finally appointed candidates are liable for active service in the Railway Engineers Unit of the Territorial Army, and fourth, they must execute a security or indemnity bond where necessary at joining.
The posting rule has a direct pay effect: because the first zone is largely fixed for years, the HRA class of that zone is the HRA you will draw. Annexure B shows which zones each board fills, for instance Bilaspur's Goods Train Manager posts are almost all in South East Central Railway (800 of 812) and Ranchi's in East Central Railway (575 of 585); the vacancy guide has the table. The notification does not publish the HRA class of each station, so check the class of the stations in the zones you choose in the central city-classification list.
Where other pages get this wrong
Graduate and Under Graduate NTPC are not paid on one scale: the ten posts sit on five different levels, and the Under Graduate posts start at Level 2 or 3.
Commonly published instead: RRB NTPC salary is about Rs 35,400 for every post, or "Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 in hand".
Rs 35,400 is the initial basic pay of the two Level 6 Graduate posts (Station Master and Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor) only. A Goods Train Manager starts at Rs 29,200, a Traffic Assistant at Rs 25,500, a Commercial cum Ticket Clerk at Rs 21,700 and the Level 2 posts at Rs 19,900. A single salary figure for NTPC mixes those.
DA moves, the 8th Pay Commission, and what to expect
DA is revised on the all-India consumer price index twice a year, and with it the allowances that are percentages of basic or DA-linked. Level 5 basic of Rs 29,200 gets Rs 17,520 of DA at 60 per cent; every further point of DA adds Rs 292 a month at that level, and Rs 199 at Level 2. The 8th Central Pay Commission was approved by the Cabinet on 28 October 2025 according to a summary of its terms of reference that we mark as reported; it has made no recommendation that applies to these posts, so everything here is on the 7th CPC matrix.
What is the salary of RRB NTPC?
It depends on the post: the notifications print initial basic pay of Rs 19,900 (Level 2), Rs 21,700 (Level 3), Rs 25,500 (Level 4), Rs 29,200 (Level 5) and Rs 35,400 (Level 6). With DA at 60 per cent, HRA and transport allowance, the entry gross is roughly Rs 35,270 to Rs 73,020 a month by our arithmetic, depending on the post and the city class.
What is the pay level of Station Master and Goods Train Manager?
Station Master is at Level 6 with initial pay Rs 35,400; Goods Train Manager is at Level 5 with initial pay Rs 29,200, according to CEN 06/2025.
What is the pay of Under Graduate NTPC posts?
Commercial cum Ticket Clerk is at Level 3 (Rs 21,700); Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Clerk cum Typist and Trains Clerk are at Level 2 (Rs 19,900), according to CEN 07/2025.
What is the current DA for central government employees?
60 per cent of basic from 1 January 2026, by the Department of Expenditure OM of 22 April 2026. A revision from 1 July 2026 was not found issued on 7 October 2026.
How is HRA decided for railway employees?
The central rates are 30, 20 and 10 per cent of basic for X, Y and Z class cities while DA is 50 per cent or more. The notifications do not print HRA; we apply the central rates and say so.
Can I choose my posting zone and change it later?
You indicate preferences within your chosen RRB at application, and the railway is allotted on merit, preference and vacancy. After joining, the notifications say no transfer request to another railway is registered until at least 5 to 10 years of service.
Is the in-hand salary the same as gross?
No. In-hand pay is gross minus deductions such as pension contribution, subscriptions and tax. The notifications do not state them, so enter your own in the calculator.
