Checked 28 September 2026. From each recruiter’s own advertisement, brochure, notice and result list dated 2024–2026 (sources below); counts of names on lists are ours, and no name is reproduced. Recruitments are announced through the year — check each employer’s careers page.
Most “PSU through GATE Metallurgy” lists on the web name a dozen steel and metals companies. We read the recruiters’ own documents from 2024 to 2026 instead, and the real list is much shorter. Only four employers took a GATE-2024 or later MT score: SAIL (on GATE-2024 only), BARC through OCES/DGFS, DRDO for Scientist ‘B’, and Hindustan Copper — for one post. NALCO’s 2024 advertisement still used GATE-2023, and DRDO has announced a GATE-based 2027 round without naming disciplines. SAIL, which took 63 metallurgists on GATE-2024, ran its 2025 cycle on its own computer-based test. NALCO took 10 Metallurgy trainees on GATE-2023 and left Metallurgy out of its GATE-2025 intake. The companies that do hire metallurgists today — SAIL, BHEL, NMDC Steel, HAL, MOIL, BDL — mostly do it through their own exams. This guide sets out both lists, each recruiter’s terms, and a checker for your own score year, marks and age.
SAIL, BARC, DRDO and Hindustan Copper documents; counts of list entries are ours.
Where other pages get this wrong
SAIL’s 2025 Management Trainee (Technical) cycle, advertisement HR/REC/C-97/MTT/2025, selected through SAIL’s own computer-based test (held 23 Feb 2026), not GATE. Its last GATE-based cycle used GATE-2024. RINL (Vizag Steel)’s own job-advertisements page lists GATE-based MT(Technical) adverts only up to 01/2020.
Commonly published instead: Generic “PSUs through GATE Metallurgy” lists name SAIL, NMDC Steel, BHEL, NALCO, RINL and MIDHANI as GATE-MT recruiters; the MADE EASY blog describes a RINL MT intake through GATE 2026.
SAIL C-96/MTT/2024 and C-97/MTT/2025; BHEL 03/2025 and NMDC Steel EN 05/2026 (own exams); NALCO 10250803 (no Metallurgy); RINL job-ads page.

| NALCO GET, Advt 10240206 | 2023 | 10 (UR 4, EWS 1, OBC 2, SC 2, ST 1) | 65% / see advertisement | 30, as the advertisement defines it | GATE 90 : interview 10; bond ₹3 lakh / 4 years | Completed. NALCO’s GATE-2025 advertisement (10250803) has no Metallurgy |
Recruiters’ own documents (sources below). BARC’s minimum is 60% or CGPA 6.0. DRDO’s upper age is 35 for UR/EWS, 38 for OBC and 40 for SC/ST. Candidate lists were counted by us; no names are reproduced.
Which GATE-MT recruitments fit your score year, marks and age?
Pick the year of your GATE MT score, your category, your degree percentage and your age in years on the recruiter’s cut-off date. Each recruitment is checked against its own document.
From each recruiter’s own document (the table below carries the same terms; sources at the end). Category age relaxation is applied only where our notes record it (DRDO: 35 UR/EWS, 38 OBC, 40 SC/ST); elsewhere the general limit is shown and the relaxation must be read in the advertisement. PwBD, ex-servicemen and departmental relaxations are not modelled. Where a document gives only a general minimum percentage, the reserved-category figure shows as “read the advertisement”. Always read the advertisement itself before applying.
BARC: the steadiest door for a GATE MT score
BARC’s OCES (Orientation Course for Engineering graduates and Science postgraduates) and DGFS (DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme) recruit Scientific Officers for the Department of Atomic Energy, and Nuclear Fuel Complex hires through the same programme. The OCES/DGFS-2026 brochure lists Metallurgical Engineering (MT) as a discipline and accepts a valid GATE score from 2024, 2025 or 2026 as one route to the interview; the other is BARC’s own online test. Eligibility is a Metallurgy or Materials degree with 60% or CGPA 6.0, and a general upper age of 26 on 1 August 2026. In training the stipend is ₹74,000 a month plus a ₹30,000 book allowance; on completion officers join at Level 10 (₹56,100 basic), under a three-year indemnity bond.
BARC does not fix Metallurgy posts in advance, but its lists show the scale. The OCES-2026 Metallurgy interview shortlist (9 April 2026) had 89 candidates and the final selection list (22 June 2026) 24 — about one in four interviewed. BARC does not publish the GATE score of its last shortlisted candidate, so no page can honestly tell you “the BARC cut-off for Metallurgy”. What decides the outcome is the interview.
DRDO Scientist ‘B’: MT or XE, a handful of posts
DRDO’s Recruitment and Assessment Centre (RAC) fills Scientist ‘B’ posts on GATE scores. Advertisement 156 (applications 13 June–8 August 2025) accepted GATE-2023, 2024 or 2025 in “Metallurgical Engineering [Paper code : MT] Or Engineering Sciences [XE]” for its materials posts: four DRDO posts (UR 2, OBC 1, SC 1) and one at ADA (UR). It asked for a first-class BE/BTech in Materials, Materials Science or Metallurgical Engineering, and an upper age of 35 (UR/EWS), 38 (OBC) or 40 (SC/ST). Candidates were shortlisted at 1:10 on GATE, and the final merit is GATE 80 : interview 20, at Level 10 (₹56,100 basic). On 31 August 2026 RAC published a notice saying its 2027 Scientist ‘B’ vacancies will again be filled on the basis of GATE, so candidates should write GATE 2027. The disciplines for 2027 are not named yet.
Hindustan Copper and the SAIL 2024 cycle
Hindustan Copper’s Graduate Engineer Trainee advertisement Estt./1/2026/2025-26 (11 August 2025) took GATE-2023, 2024 or 2025 scores for 27 posts, of which one (UR) was Metallurgy. It asked for GATE “in the same discipline as the qualifying degree” without printing a paper code, and its Metallurgy degree clause also admits Chemical graduates. The document does not say which paper such a candidate should offer; a Metallurgy graduate would ordinarily write MT, but check the advertisement before relying on a score from another paper. Terms: 60% (55% SC/ST), age 28 on 1 August 2025, GATE 70 : interview 30, ₹40,000 basic and a ₹3 lakh, three-year bond. We counted the lists: 11 candidates were called to interview in Metallurgy and one was selected.
SAIL’s GATE-2024 cycle (PER/REC/C-96/MTT/2024, 5 July 2024) was the largest Metallurgy intake of the period: 63 of 249 Management Trainee (Technical) posts — more than Electrical (61) and close to Mechanical (69). It asked for 65% (55% SC/ST/PwBD) and an upper age of 28 on 25 July 2024, and selected on GATE 75 : group discussion 10 : interview 15, shortlisting at 1:12. Pay in training was ₹50,000 basic. The next cycle, C-97/MTT/2025 (12 November 2025), had 20 Metallurgy posts out of 124 and selected through SAIL’s own CBT on 23 February 2026 (63 were called to GD, 20 selected). SAIL has not announced whether its next cycle will return to GATE; that is the single most important thing to watch.
Metallurgy hiring through their own tests
| Employer | Document | Metallurgy posts | Route |
|---|---|---|---|
| SAIL MT(T), 2025 cycle | HR/REC/C-97/MTT/2025 (12.11.2025) | 20 of 124 (63 called to GD, 20 selected) | Own CBT 23.02.2026; 75 : GD 10 : interview 15 |
| BHEL Engineer Trainee | Advt 03/2025 | 5 (UR 2, EWS 1, OBC 1, SC 1) | Own CBE 75 + interview 25; bond ₹5 lakh |
| NMDC Steel Executive Trainee | EN 05/2026 (22.07.2026) | 3 | Own CBT 70 : GD 15 : interview 15 |
| HAL MT / DT | HAL/CHRC-TM/RECT-02/2026 (29.07.2026) | 2 MT (reported); final list 26.09.2026: 2 MT + 1 DT Metallurgy | Own online test + interview |
| MOIL GT / MT | GT/MT-MGR/12/2025 | not found (reported) | CBT + interview |
| BDL Management Trainee | Advt 2025-4 | not found (reported) | Written test + interview |
| Coal India MT | Advt 01/2025 | Coal Preparation discipline accepts Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering | Own CBT |
Official advertisements, except where marked reported (HAL post count, MOIL, BDL — the official MOIL PDF was not served and BDL’s returned 404 on 28 Sep 2026). The HAL final merit list was counted by us; names not reproduced.
For a metallurgy graduate the practical conclusion is that GATE MT is necessary but not sufficient. The score opens BARC, DRDO and Hindustan Copper, and it is the route to IIT and NIT M.Tech seats. SAIL (since its 2025 cycle), BHEL, NMDC Steel and HAL do not use the GATE score at all: they select through their own tests, whose syllabi overlap heavily with MT’s core sections. So the work you do for GATE is reused there too, but the calendar is not: those tests arrive at different times of year, and missing an own-exam notification costs you the chance whatever your GATE score.
Recruiters that do not take Metallurgy through GATE
| Employer | What their documents say |
|---|---|
| GAIL (GATE-2025, 2026, 2027 advertisements) | Chemical, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, Polymer, Computer Science — no MT |
| NTPC, NPCIL, POWERGRID, Grid-India, DVC, NHPC | No Metallurgy discipline |
| NLC India (GATE-2024) | Civil, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical only |
| EIL (GATE-2026, 2025-26/18) | Chemical, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical only |
| NALCO (GATE-2025, 10250803) | Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical only — Metallurgy dropped |
| IOCL, HPCL, ONGC | Own tests; no Metallurgy discipline |
| UPSC Engineering Services | No Metallurgy stream (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, E&T) — reported |
| RINL, NMDC Ltd, MIDHANI, MECON, KIOCL | No 2024–2027 GATE-MT advertisement found. NMDC Ltd’s 29.08.2025 notice says ET (Tech) will come from GATE-2026 candidates, but names no disciplines and no detailed advertisement had appeared by 28.09.2026 |
Checked in each employer’s own advertisements (ESE: reported). ISRO, BEL, Oil India, AWEIL/YIL, HEC and state PSCs were not checked in detail — unknown, not negative.
Two practical notes. First, a GATE score is valid for three years, but each recruiter chooses which GATE years it accepts — BARC took 2024–2026, Hindustan Copper 2023–2025, SAIL only 2024 — so an old score is not automatically usable. Second, the percentage and age rules are strict and are checked on a specific date printed in each advertisement; a candidate one month over the age limit on that date is ineligible regardless of score. Use the checker above, then read the advertisement.
Practise it, don't just read it
Whether you are aiming at BARC’s interview or SAIL’s own CBT, the core is the same: phase diagrams, heat treatment, extraction thermodynamics and mechanical behaviour. Short topic quizzes keep those fast.
The ProSyllabus GATE MT library has topic quizzes on the iron–carbon diagram, crystal structures and defects, diffusion, heat treatment of steels, Ellingham and Pourbaix diagrams, creep, stress–strain behaviour, solidification and casting defects, and rolling — the first one is free.
Which PSUs recruit through GATE Metallurgy in 2027?
In documents dated 2024–2026, BARC (OCES/DGFS), DRDO (Scientist ‘B’) and Hindustan Copper took GATE MT scores, and SAIL did on GATE-2024 only. DRDO has announced its 2027 vacancies will be on the basis of GATE.
Does SAIL recruit through GATE Metallurgy?
It took 63 Metallurgy trainees on GATE-2024, but its 2025 cycle (C-97/MTT/2025) selected through SAIL’s own CBT.
Does NALCO take GATE MT?
It took 10 Metallurgy GETs on GATE-2023; its GATE-2025 advertisement recruits Mechanical, Electrical and Chemical only.
What is the BARC cut-off for GATE Metallurgy?
BARC does not publish one. In OCES-2026, 89 Metallurgy candidates were called to interview and 24 were selected.
Can I apply to DRDO with GATE XE instead of MT?
Advertisement 156 accepted either MT or XE for its Metallurgy/Materials posts.
Does RINL (Vizag Steel) recruit through GATE?
Its own job-advertisements page lists GATE-based MT(Technical) adverts only up to 01/2020; we found no 2024–2027 GATE advertisement.
Which companies hire metallurgists through their own exams?
SAIL (2025 cycle), BHEL, NMDC Steel and HAL in 2025–26 documents; MOIL and BDL also (reported).
