Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2023–2026 statistical and performance reports and cut-off pages, and the GATE 2024, 2025, 2026 and 2027 information brochures. μ+σ, marks-to-score conversions and candidate counts at or above a mark are our arithmetic.
Metallurgical Engineering has one of the highest general-category qualifying marks in GATE. It was 47.5 in 2023, 41 in 2024 and 40 in both 2025 and 2026. The fall does not mean the field got weaker: from GATE 2025 the rule that sets the qualifying mark has a ceiling of 40, and MT’s formula value has been above that ceiling in both years since. This guide explains the rule, lays out four years of official MT numbers — candidates, qualifying marks by category, the top-candidate average that anchors the score, the score-to-rank bands and the marks distribution — and has a calculator that converts your marks to a GATE score and an approximate rank on each year’s field.
GATE 2023–2026 statistical reports and AIR pages.
The rule: max(25, min(40, μ + σ))
For a paper like MT, the general-category qualifying mark is tied to how the whole field performed: μ is the mean of the marks of everyone who appeared, and σ is their standard deviation. Up to GATE 2024 the brochure set the mark at “25 marks (out of 100) or μ + σ, whichever is larger”, with no upper limit. From GATE 2025 the brochure reads max(25, min(40, μ + σ)) — the same rule with a ceiling of 40 — and the GATE 2026 and GATE 2027 brochures repeat it. OBC-NCL and EWS candidates qualify at 90% of the general mark, and SC, ST and PwD candidates at two-thirds of it.
| GATE year | μ (mean) | σ (SD) | μ + σ (ours) | Rule | Official GEN mark |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 29.80 | 17.74 | 47.54 | 25 or μ+σ, no cap | 47.5 |
| 2024 | 23.58 | 17.51 | 41.09 | 25 or μ+σ, no cap | 41 |
| 2025 | 25.44 | 17.81 | 43.25 | max(25, min(40, μ+σ)) | 40 (capped) |
| 2026 | 27.92 | 17.05 | 44.97 | max(25, min(40, μ+σ)) | 40 (capped) |
μ and σ: Table 2 of each GATE statistical report (the 2023 report prints σ before μ; μ + σ = 47.54 confirms which is which). Rules: GATE 2024 brochure (IISc) and GATE 2025, 2026 and 2027 brochures. The 2023 brochure was not retrieved; its 47.5 equals μ + σ, so no cap applied that year.
Where other pages get this wrong
The 40-mark ceiling first appears in the GATE 2025 brochure. MT’s 2025 general qualifying mark was 40, and under the 2025 rule it could not have been higher.
Commonly published instead: Getmyuni’s “GATE MT Expected Cutoff Marks 2025” gave an expected general cut-off of 42–47; some pages describe the cap as part of the GATE 2024 rule.
GATE 2024 brochure: “25 marks … or μ + σ, whichever is larger”; GATE 2025 brochure: “max(25, min(40, μ + σ))”; GATE 2025 MT cut-off: 40.
The cap changes more than the pass mark. The GATE score is 350 + 550 × (M − Mq) ÷ (M̄t − Mq), where Mq is the general qualifying mark and M̄t is the average of the top 0.1% of candidates (or the top 10, whichever is larger). Lowering Mq from about 44.97 to 40 in 2026 raised the score of every qualifier. By our arithmetic, 50 marks in 2026 was a score of 468 under the cap and would have been 416 without it; in 2025 the same 50 marks was 469 instead of 436. That matters wherever the GATE score, not the marks, decides — which is almost everywhere: IIT and CCMT M.Tech admissions and every PSU that recruits through GATE.
| Marks | 2025 capped (Mq 40) | 2025 without cap (Mq 43.25) | 2026 capped (Mq 40) | 2026 without cap (Mq 44.97) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 45 | 409 | 372 | 409 | 350 |
| 50 | 469 | 436 | 468 | 416 |
| 60 | 588 | 564 | 586 | 548 |
| 70 | 707 | 692 | 704 | 680 |
Our arithmetic with the official formula, M̄t (86.23 in 2025, 86.67 in 2026) and the qualifying marks shown. “Without cap” is hypothetical — no such score was ever issued.

GATE 2023–2026 statistical and performance reports; sessions from the session number printed on each final key. *The 2024 report prints 185 as MT’s SC/ST/PwD qualifying score; the official formula with its own figures (27.3, 41, 76.7) gives 139 (our arithmetic). That column of the 2024 table does not match the formula for most papers, while the OBC-EWS column matches for every paper, so we show the formula value. Because MT is a single-session paper, raw marks are the marks used in the score — no normalisation.
From the table above.
Two things are visible. The field is growing — appeared candidates rose by half between 2023 and 2026 — and the share who qualify rose from about a quarter to almost a third, which is what a fixed 40-mark ceiling does when the field’s μ + σ sits above it. The reserved-category qualifiers show the same effect: 2026 qualified 466 OBC-NCL, 222 SC and 74 ST candidates, against 257, 112 and 44 in 2023.

Scores: official formula with each year’s official Mq and M̄t (our arithmetic; a negative score below the qualifying mark is what the formula gives). Candidates at or above a mark: summed by us from the GATE 2026 appeared-marks distribution.
The same marks are worth different scores in different years because M̄t moves. 2024 was a hard paper at the top — the top-0.1% average was 76.7 — so 70 marks was a score of 797; in 2026 the top average was 86.67 and 70 marks was 704. The reverse also holds at the bottom: under the 2023 rule the qualifying mark was 47.5, so 40 marks was a score of about 228 and did not qualify a general candidate, while in 2025 and 2026 the same 40 marks was exactly 350. For 2027, the useful targets on the 2026 field are, by our arithmetic: 40 marks to qualify (GEN), about 50 for a score near 470, about 61.2 for 600, about 69.7 for 700 (73 appeared candidates scored 70 marks or more) and about 78.2 for 800 (18 scored 80 or more).
GATE MT marks → score → rank calculator
Enter your expected marks out of 100 (after negative marking). The calculator applies the official GATE score formula using the real qualifying mark and topper average of the year you pick, and estimates a rank from that year's official mark distribution.
Estimates only. Your real score depends on the 2027 field, which is not known until the result on 19 March 2027. Qualifying marks by category are the official figures for that year. Rank is interpolated between official mark bands and is approximate.
Score bands and ranks: the official tables
GATE does not publish a marks-to-rank table, but each statistical report prints the range of All India Ranks that fell in every 100-point score band. MT’s four tables are below; the tool after them reads your score against all four years at once.
| Score band | 2023 ranks | 2024 ranks | 2025 ranks | 2026 ranks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 901–1000 | 1–4 | 1–4 | 1–3 | 1–2 |
| 801–900 | 5–21 | 5–29 | 4–26 | 3–20 |
| 701–800 | 23–61 | 31–78 | 28–73 | 22–74 |
| 601–700 | 63–128 | 80–154 | 77–167 | 76–190 |
| 501–600 | 132–215 | 159–265 | 176–309 | 192–354 |
| 401–500 | 225–347 | 273–435 | 316–548 | 360–692 |
| 301–400 | 358–539 | 446–651 | 565–848 | 704–1,115 |
| 201–300 | 553–752 | 666–915 | 862–1,303 | 1,133–1,737 |
| 101–200 | 781–1,033 | 942–1,141 | 1,326–1,360 | 1,765–1,785 |
Score-band → rank tables of the GATE 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 statistical reports. Ranks below the 350 general qualifying score belong to reserved-category qualifiers, who are ranked with everyone else.
Your GATE MT score, read against four years of official rank bands
Enter a GATE score out of 1000. The tool finds the 100-point band it falls in and shows the All India Ranks that band covered in each year’s official statistical report.
Score-band → rank tables of the GATE 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 statistical reports, exactly as printed (the table below carries the same numbers). The 2023 report prints its bands top-down (1000–901) and the later reports bottom-up (900–1000), so a score sitting exactly on a boundary may belong to either neighbour. Ranks inside a band are not published.
MT against its neighbouring papers
MT’s 40 is high next to the papers its candidates are most likely to compare it with. In 2026 the general qualifying mark was 25 in Chemical Engineering, 25.2 in Mechanical, 29.5 in Mining, 35.2 in Engineering Sciences (XE) and 36 in Production and Industrial Engineering. That is not evidence that MT is easier — it is evidence that the MT field scores more tightly around a higher mean, so μ + σ lands above the cap. A mark in one paper is not comparable to a mark in another; only the GATE score is designed to be compared, and even that only roughly.
| Paper | 2025 GEN mark | 2026 GEN mark |

| MT | 40 | 40 |
| XE (the only permitted second paper) | 35.4 | 35.2 |
| PI | 35.6 | 36 |
| MN | 30.6 | 29.5 |
| ME | 35.8 | 25.2 |

Practise it, don't just read it
In 2026, 457 of the 3,908 candidates who appeared scored between 40 and 50 marks — the densest stretch above the qualifying mark. Three or four extra correct numericals move you through most of it. Short timed quizzes on single topics are the cheapest way to find which ones.
The ProSyllabus GATE MT library has topic quizzes on the iron–carbon diagram, crystal structures and defects, diffusion, heat treatment of steels, Ellingham and Pourbaix diagrams, creep, stress–strain behaviour, solidification and casting defects, and rolling — the first one is free.
What was the GATE MT cut-off in 2026?
40 marks for General, 36 for OBC-NCL and EWS, and 26.6 for SC, ST and PwD.
Why did the GATE Metallurgy cut-off fall from 47.5 to 40?
From GATE 2025 the general qualifying mark is max(25, min(40, μ + σ)). MT’s μ + σ was 43.25 in 2025 and 44.97 in 2026, so the 40-mark ceiling applied.
What GATE score is 50 marks in MT?
About 468 on the 2026 field and 469 on the 2025 field (our arithmetic with the official formula).
What rank does 60 marks get in GATE MT?
In 2026, 209 candidates who appeared scored 60 or more (our count from the official distribution), so roughly rank 200.
Is GATE MT normalised?
No. MT has been held in a single session every year from 2023 to 2026, so raw marks are used.
How many students write GATE MT?
4,794 registered and 3,908 appeared in 2026.
What did the GATE MT 2026 topper score?
100 out of 100, a GATE score of 1000.
