Checked 28 September 2026. From each institute’s own cut-off documents for 2024–2026 and NIC’s CCMT 2025/2026 round data. Lowest-in-any-round aggregation, group counts and marks equivalents (on the GATE 2026 MT scale) are ours. Admission cycles for 2027 open after the GATE result on 19 March 2027.
A GATE MT score is the entry ticket to M.Tech seats in metallurgy and materials at the IITs, IISc and — through CCMT — the NITs, IIEST, IIST, DIAT and NIAMT. This guide collects every closing score those institutes published for 2024–2026 and converts the key ones into GATE MT marks on the 2026 paper. The headline: on the 2026 scale, a score just above the general qualifying mark cleared the last CCMT round in about half the metallurgy and materials programmes; IIT Kharagpur closed at 433 for general candidates (about 47 marks); and IIT Madras’s teaching-assistantship seats closed at 688 (about 69 marks, just below the 700-score band that 75 candidates reached in 2026). The stipend on an assistantship seat is ₹12,400 a month.

IITs and IISc: closing scores and floors
Institutes publish two different kinds of number, and mixing them up is the most common mistake on cut-off pages. A closing score is the score of the last candidate offered or admitted. A floor is the minimum needed just to apply or be shortlisted — IIT Bombay says its figures are “merely for applying”. IIT Roorkee publishes a third kind, normalised marks out of 100, which is not a GATE score at all. The table labels every row.

Institutes’ own documents (sources below). Marks equivalents are ours, using the GATE 2026 MT scale (qualifying mark 40, M̄t 86.67); on a different year’s paper the same score needs different marks.
Three readings stand out. IIT Madras’s assistantship seats have become very competitive: the general close rose from 473 in 2024 to 528 in 2025 and 688 in 2026, while the same programme without an assistantship closed at 476 — the stipend is what the extra 200 points buys. IIT Kharagpur is the most reachable of the older IITs, at 358–433 for general candidates over three years. And IIT (ISM) Dhanbad’s last rounds fall below 350 — 146 to 231 — and ISM prints one figure in every category column, including UR. A score under 350 is below the general qualifying score, so such a seat can only have gone to a reserved-category candidate; a general candidate still needs at least 350. Round 1 at ISM in 2026 still needed 488.
IIT Bombay: eligibility for a GATE MT candidate
IIT Bombay’s M.Tech brochure for 2026-27 accepts MT in every specialisation of the Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science department (MEMS) — Ceramics and Composites, Corrosion, Materials Science, Process Metallurgy, Steel Technology — and in the separate MMM programme. Candidates need a BE/BTech/BS in a recognised engineering branch (or an MSc with Bachelor-level mathematics) with 60%, first class or CPI 6.0 (55% or CPI 5.5 for SC, ST and PwD). The GATE floor is 400 for GEN and EWS, 360 for OBC and 267 for SC, ST and PwD — and it is set higher for candidates from other papers: 550 for ME, EE and EC (600 for ME in MMM). XE counts only when the degree discipline is on IIT Bombay’s list. MT is also accepted outside MEMS: Solid State Devices (EE7) at 510, Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at 650, Energy Science at 600 and Climate Studies at 500. MMM waives GATE for employer-sponsored candidates with two years’ experience.
Two other IITs have eligibility quirks. IIT Kanpur’s MSE department takes MT, XE-C (Materials Science), CY or PH with 60% or CPI 6.0 but publishes no cut-off numbers. IIT Guwahati has no metallurgy M.Tech; its Materials Science and Technology programme is in the Chemical Engineering department and takes CH only.
CCMT: NITs, IIEST, IIST, DIAT and NIAMT
In CCMT 2026, 138 programme groups list GATE paper MT; 40 of them are metallurgy or materials programmes (our keyword count on programme names). Across all 28 domain groups that admitted OPEN candidates (the table below shows 15 of them), the lowest OPEN closing score in any round ranged from 350 to 455 with a median of 356. Round-1 closings were higher — median 376, maximum 544. 350 is the floor because it is the general qualifying score; 356 is about 40.5 marks on the 2026 paper.

The closing-score rows the checker below uses: institutes’ own files and NIC CCMT 2026 data (lowest in any round, our aggregation). “–” means no seat was allotted in that category, or no figure was published.
Which metallurgy M.Tech closing scores does your GATE MT score clear?
Enter your GATE score and category. The check runs against the 28 closing-score rows in the table below (13 IIT and 15 CCMT).
Institutes’ own cut-off files and NIC’s CCMT round data (sources below). CCMT figures are the lowest closing score in any round (our aggregation); late rounds cover only candidates still in the process. Cut-offs mix every GATE paper a programme admits — they are not MT-only. A blank means no seat was allotted in that category. Floors (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IISc research) and IIT Roorkee’s normalised marks are not closing scores and are left out. 2027 figures will differ.
From the table above. 350 is the general qualifying score.
What a score is worth in marks
Institutes admit on the GATE score, but you prepare in marks. On the 2026 MT scale, by our arithmetic: 350 = 40 marks, 400 ≈ 44, 433 ≈ 47, 476 ≈ 51, 528 ≈ 55, 600 ≈ 61, 650 ≈ 65.5 and 688 ≈ 69. Put against the 2026 distribution, 461 of the 3,908 candidates who appeared scored 50 marks or more and 73 scored 70 marks or more. So a realistic target for most metallurgy M.Tech seats is the high 40s; IISc and IIT Madras’s assistantship seats need the top hundred or so.
Stipend and assistantship
| Institute | Assistantship |
|---|---|
| IIT Bombay | Half-Time Teaching Assistantship ₹12,400 a month, up to 24 months, 8 hours a week; Research Assistantship ₹13,400, up to 36 months |
| IIT Madras | HTTA ₹12,400, up to 22 months; “without assistantship” seats pay nothing and close lower (476 vs 688 GEN, 2026) |
| IIT Kharagpur | HTTA ₹12,400 (JMP brochure 2026-27) |
| IIT Roorkee, IIT (ISM) | “As per MoE norms” — no figure printed |

Practise it, don't just read it
M.Tech closing scores move with the paper. The cheapest way to add 50 points is to stop losing marks on topics you already know — Ellingham readings, diffusion, heat treatment, phase diagrams.
The ProSyllabus GATE MT library has topic quizzes on the iron–carbon diagram, crystal structures and defects, diffusion, heat treatment of steels, Ellingham and Pourbaix diagrams, creep, stress–strain behaviour, solidification and casting defects, and rolling — the first one is free.
What GATE MT score is needed for IIT Madras M.Tech?
The MM1 teaching-assistantship seats closed at 688 for general candidates in 2026 (473 in 2024, 528 in 2025). The same programme without an assistantship closed at 476.
