Checked 28 September 2026. From the GATE 2027 brochure and important-dates page, the 2026 and 2027 MT syllabi and the 2023–2026 official papers and keys. Weights, week counts and targets are our arithmetic; MT’s own 2027 date is not published yet.
From 28 September 2026 to 6 February 2027, the first GATE 2027 exam day, is 131 days — about 18 weeks and 5 days. MT’s own date inside the six exam days (6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February) is not published yet; in 2026 it was Saturday 14 February, in the afternoon. This plan is built from three pieces of data rather than habit: the marks each section actually carried in the last four papers, the 2027 syllabus changes, and the marks each target — qualifying, a 500 score, a 700 score — needed on the 2026 paper. Registration closes on 5 October 2026 (12 October with a late fee), so that comes first.

Where the marks are
MT is a flat paper. On our count of 2023–2026, no core section averaged more than 14 marks or fewer than 9.5, so the plan gives every section time rather than betting on two or three. The shares below follow those averages, with a separate slice for the new Section 8 (whose non-metallic half is new study for most people) and a slightly smaller one for Transport, the lowest-scoring section.
| Block | Marks (2023–26 average) | Plan share (ours) | Priority in 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Aptitude | 15 | 15% | Fixed 15 marks; practise weekly, not in one block |
| Engineering Mathematics | 13 (fixed) | 13% | Trimmed syllabus: drop Laplace transforms, Stokes/Green, Simpson |
| Physical Metallurgy (incl. characterisation) | 14 | 12% | Add optical microscopy and SEM; drop spinodal, erf solutions |
| Section 8 — Materials Science, Non-Metallic | ≈3.25 (already inside other sections) | 6% | New: polymers, ceramics, composites, electronic, magnetic |
| Metallurgical Thermodynamics | 12.25 | 12% | Ellingham, solutions, phase rule; drop defect/interface thermodynamics |
| Mechanical Behaviour of Materials | 12.25 | 12% | Add Tresca/von Mises, ceramics and polymers; creep, fatigue stay |
| Manufacturing Processes | 12.25 | 11% | Unchanged: casting, gating, rolling, welding, NDT, powder metallurgy |
| Mineral Processing and Extractive | 11.75 | 11% | Add zinc, BF thermodynamics, coke testing, thin-slab casting |
| Transport Phenomena | 9.5 | 8% | Correlations and dimensionless numbers; drop Buckingham Pi |

GATE MT 2027 revision planner
Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.
The 18-week plan
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (28 Sep–4 Oct) | Register by 5 Oct. Solve the 2026 paper cold in three hours to find your baseline. | A score and a list of every topic you lost marks on |
| 2–5 (5 Oct–1 Nov) | New 2027 material first: Section 8 (polymers, ceramics, composites, electronic, magnetic), characterisation, Tresca/von Mises, zinc and BF thermodynamics. Engineering Mathematics on the trimmed syllabus. | The new-topic checklist in the syllabus guide fully ticked |
| 6–9 (2–29 Nov) | Numerical core: Metallurgical Thermodynamics and Transport Phenomena — free energy, Ellingham, solutions, heat and mass transfer with correlations. | 15 two-mark NAT-style numericals a week, timed |
| 10–12 (30 Nov–20 Dec) | Extractive balances and Mechanical Behaviour — charge and heat balances, blast furnace, Hall–Héroult; creep, fatigue and Paris law, Schmid, Hall–Petch, fracture. | The 2023 and 2024 papers solved, timed |
| 13–15 (21 Dec–10 Jan) | Physical Metallurgy and Manufacturing — phase diagrams, diffusion, precipitation, heat treatment; casting and gating, rolling, welding, NDT, powder metallurgy. | The 2025 paper solved, timed; error log by section |
| 16–18 (11 Jan–31 Jan) | Full mocks twice a week; revise the repeat-topic list; General Aptitude daily. Resolve the error log. | Three full mocks; every repeat topic re-solved once |
| Final days (1 Feb to your exam) | Light: formula sheet, the 2026 paper re-solved, sleep and exam-day logistics. | Nothing new learned |
Our plan; the dates are Monday-to-Sunday weeks. If MT falls later than 6 February, keep the mock cycle going — one timed paper and its review a week — and start the light block about five days before your own exam day.
The order is deliberate. New 2027 topics go first, while you have time to absorb them properly; leaving Section 8 to January is how candidates end up guessing on polymer crystallinity. The numerical sections come next, because in 2026 NAT questions carried 48 of the 85 subject marks and 22 of them were two-mark numericals — speed on calculations is the single biggest lever. Physical Metallurgy and Manufacturing, where most candidates are strongest, come last and double as revision.
Targets in marks
| Target | Marks on the 2026 paper | What it opens |
|---|---|---|
| Qualify (GEN) | 40 (OBC-NCL/EWS 36; SC/ST/PwD 26.6) | A valid score; most CCMT domain programmes’ last rounds closed near 350 |
| Score ≈ 470 | ≈ 50 | IIT Kharagpur (433 in 2026), IIT Madras non-HTTA (476), most NIT first rounds |
| Score 600 | ≈ 61 | About the top 200 (209 appeared candidates scored 60+ in 2026) |
| Score 700 | ≈ 70 | About the top 75 (73 appeared candidates scored 70+ in 2026); IIT Madras HTTA (688), IISc range |
| Score 800 | ≈ 78 | About the top 20 (18 scored 80+ in 2026) |
“Score” is the GATE score out of 1,000; “marks” are raw marks out of 100 on the 2026 MT paper (one session, so no normalisation). Our arithmetic from the official 2026 statistical report (qualifying marks and M̄t p.6, marks distribution) and the closing-score PDFs cited in the M.Tech guide. Question-type counts behind the plan are tabulated in our previous-papers guide.
How to review a paper, not just solve it
Solving a previous paper is half the value; the other half is the review. After each timed paper, mark it against the official final key and sort every lost mark into one of three bins: did not know the topic, knew it but made a calculation or unit error, and ran out of time. The three bins need different fixes. A knowledge gap goes back into the weekly plan. A calculation error needs more timed two-mark numericals of that type — a slipped unit on a two-mark NAT costs both marks, with no options to catch it. Running out of time usually means you spent too long on MCQs you were unsure of; in a paper where only 33 of 85 subject marks carry negative marking, it is often better to leave a doubtful one-mark MCQ and move to a NAT you can finish.
Two habits pay off in the exam hall. Read every MSQ as if it might have only one correct option, because every paper from 2023 to 2026 had at least one such key (2023 Q53, 2024 Q48, 2025 Q30 and Q45, 2026 Q31). And enter NAT answers to the precision the question asks for, since the official keys give answer ranges and a value outside the range scores zero. The checker below shows what your current guessing pattern costs.
MT is now a numerical paper: what are your MCQ guesses costing?
Enter your mock-test numbers. MCQs carry negative marks; NAT and MSQ answers do not — and there is no partial credit.
GATE 2027 brochure: MCQ penalty −1/3 (1-mark) and −2/3 (2-mark); no negative and no partial marks for MSQ and NAT. MCQ counts include General Aptitude. Qualifying marks are the official GEN figures (47.5 in 2023, 41 in 2024, 40 in 2025 and 2026, when the new 40-mark cap applied). Our arithmetic.

Practise it, don't just read it
Topic quizzes fit the middle weeks of this plan: one short quiz per topic after you finish it, and again two weeks later.
The ProSyllabus GATE MT library has topic quizzes on the iron–carbon diagram, crystal structures and defects, diffusion, heat treatment of steels, Ellingham and Pourbaix diagrams, creep, stress–strain behaviour, solidification and casting defects, and rolling — the first one is free.
When is the GATE MT 2027 exam?
GATE 2027 runs on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027. MT’s own date is not published yet; in 2026 it was 14 February, afternoon session.
Is four months enough for GATE MT?
About 18 weeks is enough if the time goes where the marks are: new 2027 topics early, numerical sections next, and full timed papers in the last month.
What is the last date to apply for GATE 2027?
5 October 2026 with the regular fee, or 12 October 2026 with the late fee.
Which topics are most important for GATE MT 2027?
Every core section averaged 9.5–14 marks in 2023–2026. Repeat topics include Ellingham diagrams, XRD, rolling, creep, fatigue, the blast furnace, solutions, welding and NDT; Section 8 is new.
How many marks are needed to qualify in GATE MT?
40 for general candidates in 2025 and 2026 (36 OBC-NCL/EWS, 26.6 SC/ST/PwD); from 2025 the general mark cannot exceed 40.
When is the GATE 2027 result?
19 March 2027.
