Checked 29 September 2026. From PIB releases (2018, 2020), archived Study in India pages (2020–2025) and the live Study in India site checked on 29 Sep 2026. If the Ministry of Education announces a new sitting, this page is out of date the same day.
Short answer: no PRAGATII has been held since 31 July 2022. The test — launched as the Indian Scholastic Assessment Test (Ind-SAT) in 2020 and renamed PRAGATII for 2021 — was the merit test for the Study in India scholarship, a government award for foreign students admitted to Indian universities through the Study in India portal. It ran three times. After the third sitting, the official exam page kept showing the same 2022 schedule for almost three years, and on the redesigned Study in India site of 2026 the page no longer exists: its address sends you to the home page. The clearest official statement came in November 2022, on the Study in India scholarship page: the scholarship "will be awarded only for AY 2022-23 and no scholarship shall be granted from next year". PRAGATII existed only to rank candidates for that scholarship — in May 2022 the same site had said that without the scholarship there would be no PRAGATII — and no sitting has been announced since. This guide lays out the full record so you can see it for yourself, and then says what a student who was hoping to sit PRAGATII in 2026 can do instead.
Status on 29 September 2026
No PRAGATII (Ind-SAT) has been held since 31 July 2022, and no official page has announced another. The official PRAGATII exam page now redirects to the Study in India home page. Nothing in this guide describes a 2026 sitting; where we give current information, it is about the routes that still exist.

The three sittings on record
| Year | Name used | Date held | Mode | Who could sit | Published numbers |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | Ind-SAT | 22 Jul 2020 (the June page had planned the "first week of July 2020") | Proctored internet test from home (Mettl Secure Browser) | Candidates from 13 countries, including India, who had applied on the SII portal by 30 Apr 2020 (SII page); PIB later reported that candidates from 12 foreign countries appeared | About 5,000 candidates; about top 2000 to get scholarships; 116 institutes |
| 2021 | PRAGATII | 25 Jul 2021 (mock tests 15 and 17 Jul) | NTA remote-proctored online test (Safe Exam Browser) | "The students from all countries can take" | No candidate count published |
| 2022 | PRAGATII | 31 Jul 2022, three sessions (10:00, 15:00 and 20:15 IST) | "Conducted Online" | No country list published | No candidate count published |
Sources: PIB release of 23 July 2020 for the 2020 figures; the archived Ind-SAT 2020, PRAGATII 2021 and PRAGATII 2022 pages for the rest. The name PRAGATII stands for Performance Rating of Applicants through Global Aptitude Test for Indian Institutes. The test was set by the National Testing Agency (NTA); EdCIL (India) Ltd ran the Study in India programme for the Ministry of Education.
Two things stand out. First, it was always an online test taken at home under remote proctoring, never a paper test in exam centres. Second, only the first year has published numbers: PIB reported that about 5,000 candidates from 12 countries appeared, with about the top 2000 to receive scholarships and 116 institutes taking part. For 2021 and 2022 we found no official count of candidates, scholarships awarded or cut-off scores.

| Oct 2025 | Programme page repeats USD 3200 "on the basis of scores of PRAGATII Exam" | SII programme page (archived Oct 2025) |
| Sep 2026 | Redesigned site: the PRAGATII page redirects to the home page; the FAQ describes institute fee waivers of 10% to 100% and no test | Live SII site, checked 29 Sep 2026 |
Read the 2024 and 2025 rows carefully. They still mention PRAGATII and USD 3200, but they sit beside an exam page that had not changed since 2022. Our reading is that these were leftover text rather than new announcements: none of them gives a date, a registration window or an admit-card schedule, which every real sitting had.
| 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A sitting was held | 22 Jul | 25 Jul | 31 Jul | none | none | none | none |
| Exam page showed a current date | yes | yes | yes | frozen | frozen | frozen | removed |
| Test-based scholarship on SII pages | USD 3500 | USD 3500 | USD 3200 | waivers only | FAQ text | old text | absent |
Darkest green = current and active; pale = leftover text or a page frozen at 2022; blank-looking = nothing.
Our summary of the rows in the table above. "Frozen" means the page still showed the 31 July 2022 schedule.
The 2022 U-turn, in the ministry's own words
The 2022 cycle is the reason many pages online still disagree about whether PRAGATII exists. In May 2022 the Study in India site said plainly that there would be no scholarship for 2022-23 and therefore no PRAGATII. By July the home page said the scholarship was back, the application deadline was extended to 30 June 2022, and the exam was held on 31 July 2022 in three online sessions. Both statements were official; they were simply made two months apart. Four months later the scholarship page closed the door from its side: the award was for 2022-23 only, with none from the next year. Since that sitting, nothing comparable has appeared: no deadline, no admit card, no mock test, no result.
| Date | Page | Statement |
|---|---|---|
| 20 May 2022 | Partner institute scholarship | No Study in India Scholarship for 2022-23, so no PRAGATII; students pointed to institute scholarships at 164 institutes |
| Jul 2022 | Home page banner | Scholarship back for 2022-23; last date to apply extended to 30 Jun 2022, 11:59 PM IST |
| 11 Jul 2022 | PRAGATII exam page | Admit cards released; webinars on 12 and 16 Jul |
| 31 Jul 2022 | PRAGATII exam page | Exam day: sessions 10:00–11:30, 15:00–16:30 and 20:15–21:45 IST |
| Nov 2022 | Scholarship and fee waivers | USD 3200 scholarship "awarded only for AY 2022-23 and no scholarship shall be granted from next year" |
What the Study in India site says now
| Page or claim | Status on 29 Sep 2026 |
|---|---|
| studyinindia.gov.in/pragatii-exam-page | Redirects to the home page |
| Old fee-waiver page (FeeWaiversandConcessions) | Returns "404 Page Not Found" |
| FAQ: scholarships | Institute-driven tuition waivers or scholarships "can range from 10% to 100%", decided by each institute on previous academic scores; no test named |
| FAQ: NRIs | NRIs can apply to the programme but are not eligible for the SII Scholarship — wording that still names a scholarship |
| About Us: financial assistance | "Study in India doesn't offer any scholarship"; institute-driven scholarships and fee waivers of 10% to 100% instead |
| Scholarships & Fellowships page | Lists ICCR, ASEAN PhD fellowships, COMPEX, SPDC and ITEC; no PRAGATII |
| Circulars page | The circulars table was empty when we checked |
The live site is not fully consistent with itself: the FAQ's NRI answer still mentions an "SII Scholarship", while the About Us page says plainly that Study in India does not offer any scholarship. We read the NRI sentence as leftover wording, not as proof that a Study in India scholarship still exists. Either way, the live site describes a different mechanism from the one PRAGATII served. In 2020–2022 a single national test ranked applicants for a government-funded scholarship. In 2026 the site describes fee waivers that each partner institute grants on its own reading of your previous marks. The companion guide on scholarships and fee waivers in this series sets the two side by side.
Claims you may still see online
Where other pages get this wrong
There is no PRAGATII in 2025 or 2026, and there were never exam centres.
Commonly published instead: pages giving a registration deadline of 15 January 2025, a March 2025 exam "confirmed by NTA", new exam centres in Indian cities, a changed pattern with fewer questions, official 2024 past papers, or scholarships for scorers above the 90th percentile.
None of these appears on any official page. Every sitting was an online test taken from home, the pattern stayed at 90 questions from 2020 to 2022, the only official practice material was mock tests, and the 2020 awards were about the top 2000 by country-wise quota — not a percentile cut.
| Claim seen online | What the official record shows |
|---|---|
| Registration deadline 15 Jan 2025 and a 2025 exam | No sitting after 31 Jul 2022; the exam page stayed frozen at that date into May 2025 |
| New PRAGATII exam centres in Indian cities | All three sittings were remote-proctored online tests taken from home |
| Pattern changed to fewer questions | 90 questions in 90 minutes in 2020, 2021 and 2022 |
| Official past papers released for 2024 | No 2024 exam; the SII site published mock tests, not past papers |
| "Remains the active, current name" in 2026 | The official exam page no longer exists |
If you were planning to sit PRAGATII in 2026
What you can actually do
- Apply through the Study in India portal anyway. Admission and any institute fee waiver do not depend on PRAGATII. See the portal guide in this series for the steps and the 2026-27 institute dates.
- Check ICCR scholarships in your country. ICCR has 4541 scholarship slots across 18 schemes for 2026-27, applied for through the Indian mission in your country. Benefits differ by scheme, and airfare is included only where the scheme provides it.
- For engineering at NITs and IIITs, look at DASA. Undergraduate DASA 2026 used JEE (Main) ranks; postgraduate DASA used GRE for M.Tech, M.Arch, M.Plan, M.Des and MURP, and GMAT for MBA.
- Keep your aptitude practice. Several Indian universities use their own verbal, quantitative and reasoning tests; the three PRAGATII sections are ordinary aptitude areas.
ICCR figures from the ICCR scheme allocation page for 2026-27; DASA from the DASA 2026 documents. Details and sources in the comparison guide.
| Route | Test needed in 2026 | Funding and key fees |
|---|---|---|
| Study in India portal | None named on the SII site | Institute fee waiver of 10% to 100% at the institute's discretion; institute fees otherwise |
| ICCR scholarship (more than 4500 slots, 18 schemes, 2026-27) | Selection by the Indian mission on merit; universities decide admission | Tuition, stipend and allowances; airfare only where the scheme provides it; hostel, mess and deposits paid by the student |
| DASA UG 2026 | JEE (Main) 2026 rank | No scholarship; DASA (Non-SAARC) initial fee US$4300 (CSAB Q&A), which includes the US$300 non-refundable registration fee |
| DASA PG 2026 | M.Tech, M.Arch, M.Plan, M.Des, MURP: GRE (Verbal + Quantitative) at least 280. MBA: GMAT at least 480 | No scholarship; US$300 registration + US$4,000 first-semester tuition (US$2,000 for eligible SAARC nationals); later semesters and institute charges extra |
Practise it, don't just read it
Want to keep the aptitude skills sharp? Our quizzes practise the same three areas PRAGATII tested — useful for any university aptitude test, not preparation for a scheduled PRAGATII.
The ProSyllabus PRAGATII library has ten topic quizzes across the three old sections: Verbal (sentence correction, reading-comprehension inference), Quantitative (percentages, averages, time-speed-distance, simple and compound interest, number series) and Logical (syllogisms, coding-decoding, blood relations).
Is PRAGATII 2026 being held?
No official page announces it. The last sitting was on 31 July 2022, and the official exam page now redirects to the Study in India home page.
Has PRAGATII been officially discontinued?
No notice abolishes the test by name. But the official scholarship page of November 2022 said the SII Scholarship would be awarded only for 2022-23 and not from the next year, and PRAGATII existed only to award that scholarship. No sitting has been announced since.
Are Ind-SAT and PRAGATII the same exam?
Yes. The 2020 test was called Ind-SAT; from 2021 the same test, with the same three sections and 90 questions, was called PRAGATII.
When was the last PRAGATII exam?
On 31 July 2022, in three online sessions starting at 10:00, 15:00 and 20:15 India time.
Who conducted PRAGATII?
The National Testing Agency set and ran the test for the Study in India programme of the Ministry of Education, with EdCIL as the implementing agency.
Did PRAGATII have exam centres in India?
No. It was a remote-proctored online test taken on your own computer at home in every year it was held.
Can I still get a Study in India scholarship without PRAGATII?
The live About Us page says Study in India does not offer any scholarship itself; it describes institute-driven scholarships and fee waivers of 10% to 100%, decided by each institute on your previous marks. The live FAQ still says NRIs are not eligible for the "SII Scholarship", which looks like leftover wording.
What should I do if a website says PRAGATII registration is open?
Check it against the official Study in India site. If the notice is not there, do not pay anyone and do not share passport details on an unofficial page.
