Checked 25 September 2026. From Pearson VUE's OMSB page, OMSB's April 2026 booklets and the MOH private-sector SOP (Nov 2025). Where a rule is not published, we say so.
On the private-sector route, Oman's nursing licence involves two tests with two different attempt rules, and most confusion online comes from mixing them. The OMSB written exam — taken at OMSB's Muscat centre or at Pearson VUE centres worldwide — currently has no maximum number of attempts. The MOH viva for private-sector licences allows three; MOH publishes no viva rule for government-sector hiring. This guide sets both out, explains the booking and result rules, and checks a dozen common claims against the official documents.

Attempts: two tests, two rules
| Test | Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| OMSB written exam (Pearson VUE) | "There is currently no maximum number of exam attempts." Each attempt is a new booking and payment | Pearson VUE OMSB page |
| OMSB written exam | Waiting period between attempts: not published | — |
| MOH viva (private sector) | "If the applicant failed, he/she is allowed 2 more attempts" — three in all | MOH SOP v3 (Nov 2025) |
| MOH viva, older rule | The 2021 SOP said "3 other attempts"; superseded | MOH SOP v2 (Dec 2021) |
Pearson VUE OMSB page; MOH SOP v3. The first bar is drawn long only to show "no maximum".
Where other pages get this wrong
The three-attempt rule belongs to the MOH viva, not the OMSB exam.
Commonly published instead: "You can attempt the OMSB exam three times a year" or "four times a year".
Pearson VUE's OMSB page says there is currently no maximum number of exam attempts, subject to OMSB policy. The "1 + 2 attempts" rule is in the Ministry of Health's private-sector SOP and applies to the viva interview.
Why two tests
The split reflects who does what in Oman. OMSB, the specialty board, sets and runs occupational-classification exams for many health professions; Pearson VUE delivers them worldwide. The Ministry of Health licenses practitioners, and its private-sector directorate adds an interview of its own before a licence is issued to a nurse in a private hospital or clinic. So a nurse can pass OMSB's paper on the first try and still meet a viva months later, after the employer has filed. Preparing for one does not replace preparing for the other: the written paper tests knowledge across the blueprint, while the viva is a conversation with MOH assessors about practice.
Results and score validity
The score report is emailed within 24 hours of the exam. Pearson VUE says lost score reports cannot be re-issued and refers candidates to OMSB, which has a request-for-certification-letter form. How long a score stays valid in the Pearson VUE era is not published. The only figure on record is from the Prometric period: OMSB's December 2022 FAQ said a score report was "only valid for one year from the date of exam". Neither the April 2026 booklets nor Pearson VUE's page repeats it, so plan to use your result within a year to be safe, and ask your employer what it accepts.

Planning your attempts
No attempt limit does not mean attempts are free. Each one costs USD 200, a private-sector file needs both the result and a DataFlow report, and an employer waiting to file your licence will not wait indefinitely. Treat the first sitting as the one that counts: sit it once your timed mocks clear the pass mark with a margin, not when they first touch it. If you fail, go back to your own mock records to see which domains cost you marks — there is no published minimum gap, but rebooking without changing anything rarely changes the result.
The MOH viva
The viva is MOH's own interview for private-sector nurses, held after the employer submits your file and before the Ministry of Labour letter and licence. Its form — reference MoH/DGPHE/SOP No.09/F/001 — records your qualification category (MScN/BScN, PBScN or Diploma), your written-exam result and date, the RO 50 fee, and boxes for attempts 1, 2 and 3. MOH does not publish the viva's content or pass criteria. Expect questions on clinical practice in your area, and treat it as a professional interview rather than a second written exam.
| If you fail | What happens |
|---|---|
| The written OMSB exam | Rebook and pay again; no published maximum or waiting period |
| The MOH viva, first time | Two more attempts allowed |
| The MOH viva, third time | Not stated in the SOP; the "reapply after one year" claim has no official source |
From Pearson VUE's OMSB page and MOH's SOP v3.
Twelve claims checked

Most of these errors have the same origin: Oman changed vendor in 2023 and published new booklets in 2026, and a great deal of advice online was written before either. Anything that mentions Prometric, 70 questions or an unpublished pass mark predates the current rules. When in doubt, the April 2026 booklets on OMSB's testing page and MOH's November 2025 SOP are the two documents that settle almost every question.
Practise it, don't just read it
With no attempt limit, the cost of an unprepared sitting is the fee and the delay. Practise until your timed scores clear the pass mark comfortably.
The ProSyllabus Oman nursing library has topic quizzes for Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing: Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Medical-Surgical Nursing: Renal, Endocrine and Gastrointestinal, Pharmacology for Nurses, Maternal and Child Health Nursing, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing, Infection Prevention and Control and Professional Practice, Ethics and Oman Health Regulations. Each question comes with an explanation.
How many times can I take the OMSB nursing exam?
Pearson VUE's OMSB page says there is currently no maximum number of attempts; each attempt is a new booking and payment.
How many attempts are allowed for the Oman nursing viva?
Three: MOH's private-sector SOP allows two more attempts after a failed first viva.
How long is an OMSB score valid?
Not published for the Pearson VUE era. The Prometric-era FAQ (2022) said one year; plan on using your result within a year and check with your employer.
Is there a waiting period between OMSB attempts?
No waiting period is published.
Can I take the OMSB exam in India?
Yes. Candidates outside Oman book any Pearson VUE centre worldwide through pearsonvue.com/omsb, and online payment is available in India.
Does passing OMSB mean I have an Oman licence?
No. The OMSB pass is one document; the licence is issued by MOH after verification, registration and — in the private sector — the viva.
What is asked in the Oman nursing viva?
MOH does not publish the viva's content or pass criteria. Its form records your qualification, written-exam result, fee and attempt number; treat it as a professional interview on clinical practice.
Do I pay again for each OMSB attempt?
Yes. Pearson VUE says every booking needs a new payment; the fee is USD 200.
What if I lose my OMSB score report?
Pearson VUE says score reports cannot be re-issued and refers candidates to OMSB, which offers a request-for-certification-letter form.
Is the Oman nursing exam still on Prometric?
No. OMSB moved to Pearson VUE exclusively under an agreement announced in February 2023; book at pearsonvue.com/omsb.
Can I reschedule my OMSB exam?
Yes, free of charge at least 48 hours before the appointment, and a cancellation 48 hours or more ahead is fully refunded.
