Checked 25 September 2026. Blueprints, timing and books from OMSB's April 2026 booklets. The week plan and hour split are our suggestion.
OMSB's nursing papers are shorter than most Gulf licensing exams — 100 questions in two and a half hours — and their blueprints are published as nominal percentages, each allowed to vary by five points. That makes a focused six-week plan realistic for a working nurse. This one is built on the BSN blueprint, with the changes a Diploma candidate should make, and keeps two timed mocks.
OMSB booklets (April 2026); our plan.
How the hours are split (BSN)
Our split: each domain at nine-tenths of its blueprint weight, with a tenth kept for timed mocks.
OMSB nursing hours planner
Choose your likely exam day and how many hours a week you can study. The planner counts the weeks left from today and splits your total hours across the paper.
The exam is booked through Pearson VUE rather than in windows — candidates living in Oman sit at OMSB's centre in Muscat, others at Pearson VUE centres — so these dates are examples. Diploma candidates: move the Principles of Care hours to Fundamental of Nursing, drop evidence-based practice, and add its hours to Adult Health (35% of your paper).
The six weeks
| Week | BSN focus | Diploma change |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Timed 50-question baseline; Adult Health — cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine | Same |
| 2 | Adult Health — renal, neurological, surgical and critical care | Same, with extra critical-care practice |
| 3 | Principles of Care: standards, legal and ethical practice, leadership and management; first full 100-question mock | Fundamental of Nursing: basic care, assessment, medication safety |
| 4 | Maternal Health and Child Health | Same |
| 5 | Mental Health; Community Health & Gerontology; evidence-based practice and epidemiology | Mental Health; Community Health (no gerontology or research domain) |
| 6 | Second full mock; revise the weakest domain; logistics | Same |
Our plan. With more time, stretch weeks 1–2 and 4 — the clinical domains are where most marks sit.

Domains and weights from the April 2026 booklets, which allow each domain to vary by up to five percentage points. Use the tracker for your own paper. Both booklets also list cross-cutting competencies — among them infection prevention and control, patient safety, health promotion, communication and critical thinking — that run through every domain.
High-yield topics by domain
| Domain | Topics to know well (our list) |
|---|---|
| Adult Health | Heart failure and MI, COPD and asthma, diabetes and its emergencies, renal failure, stroke, post-operative care, shock |
| Principles of Care | Standards of care, consent and confidentiality, delegation, documentation, ethical dilemmas |
| Community & Gerontology | Immunisation, screening, communicable-disease control, occupational health, falls and polypharmacy in older adults |
| Maternal Health | Antenatal care and common complaints, labour, postpartum haemorrhage, pre-eclampsia |
| Child Health | Growth and development, dehydration, congenital conditions, respiratory infections, safe positioning |
| Mental Health | Suicide risk, involuntary admission, therapeutic communication, common psychiatric drugs |
Domains are OMSB's; the topic lists are our suggestion from standard curricula and the booklet's sample questions, not an official breakdown.
Diploma candidates: what changes
| BSN plan item | Diploma replacement |
|---|---|
| Principles of Care (20%) | Fundamental of Nursing (20%): basic care, vital signs, medication administration, hygiene and comfort |
| Evidence-based practice (5%) | Not examined — move the hours to Adult Health |
| Adult Health (30%) | Adult Health (35%) — the largest block |
| Community Health & Gerontology (15%) | Community Health (15%), without the gerontology label |
From the two April 2026 booklets. The Diploma pass mark is 50% rather than 60%, but the paper is more concentrated on adult clinical care.
If you are working shifts
Six weeks at 20 hours is about three hours on each of four days off plus short sessions after day shifts. Nights are fine for flashcards and reviewing wrong answers, poor for new material. Use your ward: read up the same day on conditions you nursed, and turn each into two or three practice questions. If your weeks stretch, keep the order — Adult Health first — and keep both mocks.
Which book for which domain
| Domain | Start with (OMSB list) | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Adult Health | Brunner & Suddarth's Medical-Surgical Nursing (14th) | Sole, Introduction to Critical Care Nursing (BSN list) |
| Principles of Care / Fundamentals | Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals (10th); Weber, Health Assessment | Marquis & Huston for leadership (BSN) |
| Maternal and Child Health | Pillitteri, Maternal and Child Health Nursing (7th) | Wong's Essentials of Pediatric Nursing |
| Mental Health | Townsend & Morgan, Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (9th) | Gorman & Sultan, Psychosocial Nursing |
| Community & Gerontology | Allender, Community & Public Health Nursing (8th) | Eliopoulos, Gerontological Nursing (BSN) |
| Evidence-based practice (BSN) | Polit & Beck, Nursing Research | Webb & Bain, Essential Epidemiology |
Titles from OMSB's booklets; the order is our suggestion. One core book per domain plus practice questions is enough for most candidates.
Using the book list without buying it all
OMSB lists sixteen titles for BSN and nine for Diploma, and nobody needs all of them. Brunner & Suddarth covers Adult Health, the largest domain in both papers; Kozier & Erb and Weber cover fundamentals and assessment; Pillitteri covers maternal and child health in one volume; and one psychiatric and one community text finish the set. BSN candidates add Marquis & Huston for leadership and a short epidemiology or research text for the 5% evidence-based-practice domain. Most Indian nursing libraries hold these, often in earlier editions, which are fine for the core concepts. Spend the money saved on a good bank of timed practice questions instead, since practice under time is what the plan relies on.
Pacing and mocks
| Checkpoint | Target time |
|---|---|
| Question 25 | About 37 min |
| Question 50 | About 75 min |
| Question 75 | About 112 min |
| Question 100 | 150 min |
At 90 seconds a question the OMSB papers are not a race, which makes careless reading the main risk. Sit each mock as the real thing — 100 questions, 150 minutes — and sort every wrong answer: not known, misread, or two plausible options. The BSN booklet's seven sample questions, with their answer key, are a good first check of the style; the Diploma booklet has none.
In the final week, add nothing new. Re-read your mock error list, do one or two timed 50-question sets, and check the practical rules: your passport names must match your Pearson VUE profile exactly, arrive 30 minutes early, and more than 15 minutes late may cost the fee. Diploma candidates should not relax because the pass mark is 50%: the paper puts 35% on Adult Health, and a weak week there is hard to make up elsewhere.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Preparing for a 70-question Prometric paper. The current exam is 100 questions on Pearson VUE.
- Studying pharmacology as a separate domain. There is none; medication questions are spread across the clinical domains and principles or fundamentals of care.
- Skipping community health. It is 15% of both papers — Community Health & Gerontology in BSN, Community Health in Diploma.
- BSN candidates skipping Principles of Care. Legal, ethical and leadership questions are a fifth of the paper.
Practise it, don't just read it
Weeks 1–2 are Adult Health. The medical-surgical quizzes are the quickest check that it has stuck.
The ProSyllabus Oman nursing library has topic quizzes for Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical-Surgical Nursing: Cardiovascular and Respiratory, Medical-Surgical Nursing: Renal, Endocrine and Gastrointestinal, Pharmacology for Nurses, Maternal and Child Health Nursing, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing, Infection Prevention and Control and Professional Practice, Ethics and Oman Health Regulations. Each question comes with an explanation.
How should I prepare for the OMSB nursing exam?
Follow the blueprint for your paper — BSN: Adult 30%, Principles of Care 20%, Community & Gerontology 15%, Maternal, Child and Mental 10% each, EBP 5% — with one listed book per domain and two timed 100-question mocks.
Which books are recommended for the Oman nursing exam?
OMSB lists Kozier & Erb, Weber's Health Assessment, Brunner & Suddarth, Pillitteri, Wong's Essentials, Townsend, Gorman & Sultan, Allender and Savage for both papers, plus leadership, research, epidemiology, critical-care and gerontology texts for BSN.
How long should I prepare for the OMSB nursing exam?
OMSB gives no figure. Six weeks at 20 hours a week covers the blueprint for a working nurse; allow longer if you have been away from practice.
When should I book the OMSB exam?
When your second timed mock clears your paper's pass mark with a margin. There is no attempt limit, but each sitting costs USD 200 and delays the licence file.
How many mock tests should I take for the OMSB exam?
At least two full-length timed mocks of 100 questions in 150 minutes — in this plan at weeks 3 and 6 — with as long spent reviewing as sitting.
Is the Diploma paper easier than the BSN paper?
Its pass mark is lower (50% against 60%) and it drops the research and leadership domains, but it puts 35% on Adult Health, so it is more concentrated rather than simply easier.
Are there official OMSB sample questions?
The BSN booklet has seven sample questions with an answer key. The Diploma booklet has none.
What should a Diploma candidate study differently?
Replace Principles of Care with Fundamental of Nursing, drop evidence-based practice, and give Adult Health more time — it is 35% of the Diploma paper.
How much time do I get per question?
150 minutes for 100 questions — 90 seconds each.
