Checked 25 September 2026. From the NVS prospectus for JNVST 2027 (clauses 4.1–4.7 and the documents list). Registration closed on 10 August 2026; eligibility is checked again at admission.
Registration for JNVST 2027 closed on 10 August 2026 — but eligibility is not settled by the form. NVS verifies “residence of district, age, eligibility including district of residence/study, category … etc.” for every provisionally selected child after the result, and a child found ineligible then loses the seat. So the eligibility rules matter twice: before the test, to be sure the effort is worth it, and after it, when the documents are checked. This guide sets out each rule from the JNVST 2027 prospectus, what changed from last year, and the documents that prove each one.

Where other pages get this wrong
A child is eligible only if born between 1 May 2015 and 31 July 2017, both dates inclusive, with no relaxation for any category.
Commonly published instead: Wording such as “born before May 1, 2015 and after July 31, 2017” — which drops the “not” and reverses the rule — or age relaxations for reserved categories.
NVS prospectus JNVST 2027, clause 4.2: “must not have been born before 01-05-2015 and after 31-07-2017 (Both dates are inclusive)”, applying to SC, ST, OBC and Divyang candidates too.

Is my child eligible for JNVST 2027?
Answer each question as it applies to your child. The checker applies the eligibility clauses of the NVS prospectus for JNVST 2027.
Clauses 4.1–4.6 of the JNVST 2027 prospectus: born 01.05.2015 to 31.07.2017 (both inclusive, all categories, no relaxation); studying Class V for the whole of 2026-27 in a Government, Government-aided or recognised school (or NIOS ‘B’ certificate by 31.05.2027); full sessions of Classes III, IV and V; one attempt only; apply only to the JNV of the district of residence. Registration for JNVST 2027 closed on 10.08.2026 — this checker cannot reopen it.
Date of birth: a 27-month window
The window runs from 1 May 2015 to 31 July 2017, and both end dates count. It moved forward exactly one year from JNVST 2026, whose window was 1 May 2014 to 31 July 2016. There is no relaxation for SC, ST, OBC or Divyang candidates. At admission the parent produces a birth certificate issued by the Government authority before the date of registration or the test; a certificate issued afterwards does not satisfy the rule. In “doubtful cases of overage” NVS may refer a child to a medical board, whose decision is final — the prospectus says this is for rare cases only.
| Test | Born on or after | Born on or before |
|---|---|---|
| JNVST 2026 (session 2026-27) | 1 May 2014 | 31 July 2016 |
| JNVST 2027 (session 2027-28) | 1 May 2015 | 31 July 2017 |
Class V, and the classes before it
The child must be studying Class V for the whole of 2026-27 and must have been promoted and admitted to Class V before 31 July 2026. A child who has already passed or studied Class V in an earlier year — including one who is repeating it — is “not eligible to apply & appear in the selection test under any circumstances”, and NVS says it compares previous years’ application data to find repeaters.
New wording in 2027 goes further back: the child must have studied and passed Classes III, IV and V, each for a full academic session, in a Government, Government-aided or recognised school, and “candidates who have skipped classes (III/IV) will be treated as ineligible”. A double promotion that skipped a class — common enough in some private schools — rules a child out.
Which district, and the new 10 km rule
Admission is “strictly district-specific”. A child applies only to the JNV of the district where the family is a bona fide resident and where the child studies Class V; a provisionally selected child is admitted only to that JNV, and no transfer is allowed later for any reason, including the parents moving. Where a district has two JNVs (Dahod, Jhabua, Gaya, Sitapur, Banswara and East Khasi Hills, among others), the block the family lives in decides which one, per the block list in Annexure-II.
For 2027 NVS added a rule for families living near a district border. A child who lives in one district but studies Class V in a recognised school in a neighbouring district remains eligible — for the home-district JNV only — provided the school is within 10 km radial distance of the family’s actual home. NVS will verify and certify that distance. A child who applied to the wrong district’s JNV will have the candidature “rejected summarily even after provisional selection”. If a district has been bifurcated and the new district has no JNV yet, the old district boundaries apply.
One attempt only
“No candidate is eligible to apply for the selection test for the second time, if he/she has already appeared in the selection test earlier for whatsoever reasons.” Because the age window and the Class V rule both move with the calendar, most children are only ever eligible for one test anyway; this clause catches the rest. The consequence for families is simple: there is no “trial run” — the one sitting is the attempt.
NIOS candidates
A child studying through the National Institute of Open Schooling can apply with the NIOS ‘B’ certificate competency course, passed on or before 31 May 2027, provided the age window is met and the child is a bona fide resident of the district. For NIOS children, rural or urban status is decided by the location of the family’s residence rather than a school, and urban NIOS candidates cannot take rural seats; a selected NIOS child submits a rural-area certificate from the District Magistrate, Tehsildar or BDO.

What a mismatch costs
The prospectus is unusually blunt about data. Data submitted in the form “shall constitute a locked and binding official record”, there is “no administrative provision for the post-submission correction” beyond the correction window, and “any submission of fraudulent information … shall constitute grounds for immediate cancellation of candidature, without intimation, at any stage”. Aadhaar details are validated against Government records, and “all personal details submitted by the candidate/parents should match with particulars of Aadhaar”. If anything in the form differs from the documents, find out now how to correct the document itself — the application can no longer be changed.
Practise it, don't just read it
Eligibility is settled; the test is not. The question types that most reward practice in the weeks before 28 November are mirror and water images, figure series and reading passages.
The ProSyllabus JNVST library has topic quizzes on mirror and water images, figure series, arithmetic and reading-comprehension passages — the first quiz is free.
What is the age limit for JNVST 2027?

Is there age relaxation for SC/ST in Navodaya?

Can a child who skipped Class III or IV apply for JNVST?
No — the 2027 prospectus treats such candidates as ineligible.
Can a child apply for Navodaya from another district?
Only to the JNV of the district of residence; a Class V school in a neighbouring district counts only within 10 km of home.

Can NIOS students apply for JNVST 2027?
Yes, with the NIOS ‘B’ certificate passed by 31 May 2027 and within the age window.
Is Aadhaar compulsory for the Navodaya test?
Yes; a child without it could register provisionally with the parent’s residence certificate and must produce Aadhaar at the test and admission.
Which OBC certificate is valid for Navodaya?
A Central-list OBC certificate issued before the registration or test date; State-list OBC candidates apply as General.
When are documents checked?
After the result, for every provisionally selected child, before admission.
Are transgender candidates eligible?
Yes; there is no separate reservation and they are counted under boys’ seats.
Can the application be corrected now?
No — the correction window was 11–12 August 2026 and the data is now locked.
